Abstract:A mixed hardware/software architecture for CABAC decoding in H.264/AVC is proposed in this paper. For the purpose of flexibility, ctxldx calculation process is implemented by software, while others are implemented by hardware. An optimized parallel decoding architecture that allows decoding two binary symbols at one clock cycle is designed to enhance overall decoding performance. An efficient scheme of accessing context models is presented. Experimental results show that the proposed architecture improves the decoding performance by 20% compared to conventional scheme. The proposed design can achieve HDTV 1080i video processing requirement when operated at 140 MHz.
VLSI Decoding Design of Low-Density Parity-Check Codes Based on Circulant Matrices

Abstract:In order to resolve the problems of large area,complicated routing and high power in decoding low-density parity-check codes(LDPC),this work presented a LDPC decoding approach,which is specified with parity check matrices based on circulant matrices,with structured memory and a corresponding partial parallel decoding architecture.By studying the structured parity matrix,the characteristic of the message passing between bit nodes and check nodes was indicated,and then a predetermined scheme of message storing with high flexibility and efficiency was proposed.Based on this scheme,a partial parallel decoding architecture was provided which significantly reduced the power and critical paths.Simulation of the LDPC in Chinese digital terrestrial television broadcasting standard on FPGA platform showed that the proposed decoding approach over AWGN channel achieved good performance,and suffered negligible performance loss compared with the double precision while effectively reducing the operation complexity.

Abstract:Variable length code is an integral component of many international standards on image and video compression. Recently, context-based adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC) is adopted by the emerging JVT (also called H.264 in ITU, and AVC in MPEG-4). In this paper, we describe a novel architecture for CAVLC decoder, including a coeff_token decoder, level decoder, total_zeros decoder and run_before decoder. Together with a barrel shifter and controller, the pipeline architecture can decode every syntax element in one clock cycle. Therefore, it is very suitable for video applications that require high throughput.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a high speed and efficient architecture of Variable Length Decoder for AVS video standard targeted for all-hardware implementation. Besides the regular operations of decoding Fixed Length Code, unsigned or signed k-th Exp-Golomb Code and 2D Variable Length Code, the proposed design provides other functions such as de-stuffing or pre-fetching the Bitstream. It can perform decoding syntax elements of sequence, frame, slice, and macro block. The complete architecture has been described in Verilog HDL, simulated with Modelsim SE 6.3c simulator, implemented using FPGA of Xinlinx Vertex5 VLX330. Without any strict constraint, the design can achieve a working frequency at 190 MHz after synthesis with Synplify_pro9.4, and the critical path is less than 6.5ns after place & route. The throughput of the design is 1 codeword per clock. In all, the architecture fully meets the demands of AVS HD decoder. It can support real-time decoding for 1080P @ 30 frame/s or 1080i @ 60 field/s videos. Inevitably, the cost for such a high speed design is consuming more hardware resources. Report of Place & Route shows about 9.1K LUTs (4% of the total LUTs in FPGA chip) are consumed by our design. Although the VLD architecture was originally designed for AVS video standard, the idea of the design can be easily adapted to other video standards.

Abstract:Trellis Code Modulation (TCM) has been widely used because it can obtain 2.55∼7.37 dB coding gain without bandwidth expansion or reduction of the effective information rates. Since Viterbi decoder plays an important role in the realization of HDTV system, we conduct the research and development on integration of Viterbi decoder. This paper proposes a new VLSI design of Viterbi decoder using ASIPs based on hardware/software co-design idea. It reduces the total design time and enhances the reliability of VLSI. We have successfully used this method for the design of Viterbi decoder in the ASTC-HDTV receiver chip.

Abstract:A memory and speed efficient CAVLC (context adaptive variable length coding) decoder for H.264/AVC baseline profile is proposed. Because the CAVLC consists of a kind of bit-level operations, general processor (like RISC or MIPS) and DSP incorporating multiple parallel arithmetic units (like SIMD or VLIW) are ineffective to decode it. Though the dedicated hardwires are very effective to decode the CAVLC, they are expensive and not programmable. Also, the size of the CAVLC lookup table is more than 400 bytes. Demand for highly flexible and fast implementations and lower memory size for CAVLC decoding is rising nowadays. The four instructions--ShowBits, GetBits, FlushBits and LeadingBits, are designed after the exploiting of the functions coverage. In order to reduce the codewords matching miss and the lookup table size, a new grouping, remainder generation method and a merged lookup table (LUT) are used; and the specific group decoding instruction GroupDecoding is also presented. In summary, a based instruction set level acceleration with the codewords group partition hardware architecture is proposed to speed up the CAVLC decoding. Based on those instructions and the hardware platform, the CAVLC decoding can be significantly accelerated compared with the method in H.264 reference software. Simulation results show that the architecture is sufficient for the CAVLC decoding of 30 frames HDTV (1902 x 1080 pixels) per second.

Abstract:Viterbi algorithm is applicable to decoding of convolutional codes. The hardware consumption of parallel Viterbi decoding shows exponential increase with the increase of constraint length of convolutional codes, which limits its hardware implementation. In this paper, the FPGA implementation of a serial Viterbi decoding architecture is presented. Suitable for decoding convolutional codes with long constraint length, this architecture saves hardware resource without performance deterioration.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a VLSI design of variable length code decoder for AVS video standard. As a co-processor of a RISC CPU, the design can decode fixed length code, unsigned or signed k-th Exp-Golomb code, and AVS 2-D variable length code. Furthermore, it has a pre-processing submodule, which can perform start code detection and de-stuffing for the input bitstream. The proposed architecture has been described in Verilog HDL, simulated with VCS digital simulator, and implemented using 0.18 /spl mu/ Artisan CMOS cells library by synopsys design compiler. The circuit costs about 15k equivalent logic gates (not including 4 kb on-chip SRAM). And the critical path is less than 6 ns in the worst case. This design has been implemented in a single chip AVS HDTV decoder, AVS101, which can support real-time decoding for NTSC, PAL, 720p 60 frames/s or 1080i 60 fields/s programs. Although the architecture was originally designed for AVS video standard, it can be easily adapted to other coding standards.
High-Performance Architecture of Deblocking Filter for AVS Video Coding

Abstract:In the video decoder for AVS, deblocking filter becomes one of the bottom necks for real-time processing. An implement architecture for deblocking filter is proposed in this paper. With a novel filtering order, the unfiltered data storage is reduced to a 16 × 8 block instead of whole 16 × 16 macroblock. With data reuse strategy, the intermediate data storage is also reduced efficiently. The experiment shows the proposed design can achieve 50 MHz with only gate count of 9.2k by using 0.18μm CMOS technology. When clocked at 50MHz, the proposed design can support real-time deblocking of HD1080 (1980 × 1088@30Hz) video application.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel cost-effective and programmable architecture of CAVLC decoder for H.264/AVC, including decoders for Coeff_token, T1_sign, Level, Total_zeros and Run_before. To simplify the hardware architecture and provide programmability, we propose four new techniques: a new group-based VLD with efficient memory (NG–VLDEM) for Coeff_token decoder, a novel combined architecture (NCA) for level decoder, a new group-based VLD with memory access once (GMAO) for Total_zeros decoder and a new VLD architecture based on multiplexers instead of searching memory (MISM) for Run_before decoder. With the above four techniques, the proposed CAVLC decoder can decode every syntax element within one clock cycle. Synthesis result shows that the hardware cost is 3,310 gates with 0.18 μm CMOS technology at a clock constrain of 125 MHz. Therefore, the proposed design is satisfied for real-time applications, such as H.264/AVC HD1080i video decoding.

Abstract:Variable Length Coding is one of the key technologies in video coding with large computation requirement.A high speed and efficient VLSI architecture for H.264/AVC CAVLC is proposed.A new look-up table algorithm based on the pre-processing greatly optimizes look-up table structure.An arithmetic compute method is exploited to replace look-up table,and the arithmetic expression is optimized with technology of unfolding and share.Some area optimization is done in the other part.Experimental result shows that for logic synthesis,the hardware cost of the proposed design is 8 723 logic gates by using SMIC 0.18 μm CMOS technology at the clock frequency constraint of 133 MHz.The new architecture can meet the requirement for the real-time processing for High-definition 1 920×1 088-30 fps video with less hardware cost.So it has practical application value.

Abstract:A new context-based adaptive 2D-VLC (CA-2D-VLC) is adopted by AVS. This paper proposes a simple and memory efficient VLSI architecture of CA-2D-VLC decoder for AVS. In order to reduce the lookup table size, two new merged lookup tables are used and a new architecture is used to replace the small lookup table. The proposed CA-2D-VLC decoder can decode every symbol per clock cycle. Synthesis result shows that the hardware cost is about 2776 gates with 0.18μm CMOS technology at a clock constrain of 125MHz. Therefore, the proposed design is suitable for real-time application for AVS HD1080i format video.

Abstract:The very-long-instruction-word architecture is widely used for DSP. In AVS coding process, the prediction residual and integer DCT are frequently called and the methods of optimizing the loops are significant for reducing coding time. Based on the VLIW character, the paper analyzes the optimization methods to accelerate the speed of prediction residual and integer DCT. The AVS prediction residual and integer DCT modules are optimized and simulated on the platform of TMS320DM6446. The experiments show that the instruction cycles are reduced by about 71% and 60% for prediction residual and 8 Ã 8 integer DCT separately.

Abstract:Modern digital communication systems usually employ convolutional codes with large constraint length for good decoding performance, which leads to large complexity and power consumption in Viterbi decoders. It is essential to use T-algorithm in Viterbi decoders to prune significant portions of the trellis states to dramatically reduce power consumption. However, the operation of searching for the best path metrics in the add-compare-select loop in T-algorithm significantly limits the clock speed. In this paper, we propose an efficient architecture based on pre-computation for Viterbi decoders incorporating T-algorithm. Through optimization at both algorithm level and architecture level, the new architecture greatly shortens the long critical path introduced by the conventional T-algorithm. The design example provided in this work demonstrates more than twice improvement in clock speed with negligible computation overhead while maintaining decoding performance.

Abstract:Context-based Binary Arithmetic Coding (CBAC) is a normative part of the newest X Profile of Advanced Audio Video coding Standard (AVS). This paper presents an efficient VLSI architecture for CBAC decoding in AVS. Compared with CBAC in H.264/AVC, the simpler binarization methods and context selection schemes are adopted in AVS. In order to avoid the slow multiplications, the traditional arithmetic calculation is transformed to the logarithm domain. Although these features can obtain better balance between the compression gain and implementation cost, it still brings huge challenge for high-throughput implementation. The fact that current bin decoding depends on previous bin results in long latency and limits overall system performance. In this paper, we present a software-hardware co-design by using bin distribution feature. A novel pipeline-based architecture is proposed where the arithmetic decoding engine works in parallel with the context maintainer. A finite state machine (FSM) is used to control the decoding procedure flexibly and the context scheduling is organized carefully to minimize the access times of context RAMs. In addition, the critical path is optimized for the timing. The proposed implementation can work at 150MHz and achieve the real-time AVS CBAC decoding for 1080i HDTV video.

Abstract:Context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC) is the major entropy-coding algorithm employed in H.264/AVC. In this paper, we present a new VLSI architecture design for an H.264/AVC CABAC decoder, which optimizes both decode decision and decode bypass engines for high throughput, and improves context model allocation for efficient external memory access. Based on the fact that the most possible symbol (MPS) branch is much simpler than the least possible symbol (LPS) branch, a newly organized decode decision engine consisting of two serially concatenated MPS branches and one LPS branch is proposed to achieve better parallelism at lower timing path cost. A look-ahead context index (ctxIdx) calculation mechanism is designed to provide the context model for the second MPS branch. A head-zero detector is proposed to improve the performance of the decode bypass engine according to UEGk encoding features. In addition, to lower the frequency of memory access, we reorganize the context models in external memory and use three circular buffers to cache the context models, neighboring information, and bit stream, respectively. A pre-fetching mechanism with a prediction scheme is adopted to load the corresponding content to a circular buffer to hide external memory latency. Experimental results show that our design can operate at 250 MHz with a 20.71k gate count in SMIC18 silicon technology, and that it achieves an average data decoding rate of 1.5 bins/cycle.

High-Speed Parallel BCH Decoder Circuit in VLSI

Abstract:A high speed VLSI decoder architecture is proposed for a standard forward error correction(FEC) in optical network. In the proposed parallel decoder architecture,a novel parallel computation of syndrome is presented to reduce the hardware complexity. A method is introduced to derive an inversion-free algorithm from the decision tree algorithm with the number of correctable errors less than 5. Area and timing estimates obtained by logic synthesis with 0.18 CMOS technology show that the implementation of (4359,4320)BCH (Bose-Chaud huri-Hocquenheim) decoder can achieve 248 MB/s with an estimated area of 0.31 mm2 including the embedded memory to store the received words. Compared with serial decoder,the proposed parallel architecture can achieve 8 times throughput with less than 2 times area.
A Cost-Effective VLSI Architecture of VLD for MPEG-2 and AVS

Abstract:In this paper, a cost-effective architecture of variable length decoder (VLD) for MPEG-2 and AVS (Advanced Audio Video Coding Standard established in China, Part two, Ji Zhun Profile) is proposed. Inverse scan (IScan) and inverse quantisation (IQ) are also merged into this design for cost-effective implementation. A novel group-based architecture with efficient symbol generation scheme is presented for MPEG-2 and a new memory-efficient architecture with mixed memory organization is presented for AVS. Furthermore, we analyze the algorithms of the two standards and propose a merged IQ scheme and a merged RAMs scheme. The proposed design consumes about 13.5K gates at a clock constrain of 166 MHz with 0.18μm CMOS technology. The simulation results show that it can achieve real-time decoding, such as HD1O8Oi(1920x1088@30 MHz) format video of AVS and MPEG-2.

Abstract:This paper presents a memory-efficient CAVLC decoding architecture for H.264/AVC. In the proposed architecture, not only the memory space is reduced for decoding the syntax elements such as coeff token, total zero, and run before, but also the decode efficiency is improved. After the analysis of the decoding principle of the CAVLC, we simplify the coeff-token VLD table and propose a new coeff-token VLD based on arithmetic operation and the look-up table combination architecture. The run-before VLD can used the same principle as the proposed coeff-token VLD. Otherwise, the proposed scheme also adope the zero block skipping technique and multiple symbols decoding scheme when decoding SignTrail. The simulation results show that our system can run at I68MHz clock frequency and the average cycles for decoding one macro-block is 136 cycles. The proposed architecture can achieves an approximate 39-53% savings in memory access without video quality degrading.
