Prevalence and Characteristics of Anxiety Disorder in Children with Epilepsy

Abstract:Objective To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of anxiety disorder in children with epilepsy.Methods Screen for child anxiety related emotional disorders(SCARED)was used,and 165 children with epilepsy in Department of Pediatrics,Peking University First Hospital from Dec.2009 to Apr.2010,aged 7-16 years old,were enrolled for screening.A positive result was defined as SCARED≥23 scores,and anxiety co-morbidity was considered.SPSS 14.0 software was used to conduct chi square test on different gender,different age groups suffering from anxiety disorders in children with epilepsy and the corresponding values were statistically analyzed by using rank sum test.Results 1.The total anxiety disorder co-morbidity rate in this group was 27.3%(n=45),with a much higher rate in girls(n=25,37.3%)than that in boys(n=20,20.4%)(χ2=5.734,P0.05).The total anxiety disorder comorbidity rate in children aged 7-12 years old(27.5%)and that in aged 13-16 years old(25.9%)had no significant differences(χ2=0.000,P0.05).2.SCARED scores(including total scores,those of all items and 5 factors)were higher in girls than that in boys,and those of 7 items(3,4,10,26,32,35,39)and 2 factors(generalized anxiety,social phobia)(Pa0.05).3.No significant differences of anxiety comorbidity rates were demonstrated between the children aged 7-12 years old and those aged 13-16 years old,some differences existed in a few single items though.For example,in the 13rd item(I am always worried obout sleeping alone)(P0.01).Conclusions The preliminary data of the present study indicated that children,particularly the girls with epilepsy,are at a higher risk of anxiety disorder.Particular attention should be paid to anxiety problems in the clinical practice of pediatric epileptology.
