Abstract:We propose an appearance-based face recognition method called the Laplacianface approach. By using Locality Preserving Projections (LPP), the face images are mapped into a face subspace for analysis. Different from Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) which effectively see only the Euclidean structure of face space, LPP finds an embedding that preserves local information, and obtains a face subspace that best detects the essential face manifold structure. The Laplacianfaces are the optimal linear approximations to the eigenfunctions of the Laplace Beltrami operator on the face manifold. In this way, the unwanted variations resulting from changes in lighting, facial expression, and pose may be eliminated or reduced. Theoretical analysis shows that PCA, LDA, and LPP can be obtained from different graph models. We compare the proposed Laplacianface approach with Eigenface and Fisherface methods on three different face data sets. Experimental results suggest that the proposed Laplacianface approach provides a better representation and achieves lower error rates in face recognition.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel and powerful pattern recognition method named symmetrical singular value decomposition representation (SSVDR) and presents its application to face recognition. The SSVDR method is based on singular value decomposition (SVD) and symmetry prior. In this method, the given image is firstly decomposed into a composition of a set of base images by the singular value decomposition technique. Then, the first few base images (which can be proved to be the low-frequency asymmetrical base images) are turned into symmetrical base images according to facial symmetry. Finally, a new representation of the original image is reestablished for the final recognition. For evaluating the performance of the SSVDR method, some experiments are conducted in two famous face databases: extended Yale B and CMU-PIE database. The experiment results show the proposed SSVDR method can reestablish a new homogeneous representation of the original image and has an encouraging performance on face recognition compared with the current state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:We report the results of a comparative study on subspace analysis methods for face recognition. In particular, we have studied four different subspace representations and their 'kernelized' versions if available. They include both unsupervised methods such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Independent Component Analysis (ICA), and supervised methods such as Fisher Discriminant Analysis (FDA) and probabilistic PCA (PPCA) used in a discriminative manner. The 'kernelized' versions of these methods provide subspaces of high-dimensional feature spaces induced by non-linear mappings. To test the effectiveness of these subspace representations, we experiment on two databases with three typical variations of face images, i.e, pose, illumination and facial expression changes. The comparison of these methods applied to different variations in face images offers a comprehensive view of all the subspace methods currently used in face recognition.

Abstract:The technology of face recognition has made some progress in recent years. After studying the PCA, 2DPCA, R1-PCA, L1-PCA, KPCA and KECA algorithms, in this paper ECA (2DECA) is proposed by extracting features in PCA (2DPCA) based on Renyi entropy contribution. And then we conduct a study on the 2DL1-PCA and 2DR1-PCA algorithms. On the basis of the experiments, this paper compares the difference of the recognition accuracy and operational efficiency between the above algorithms.

Abstract:A novel data driven face descriptor based on point-to-subspace metric is proposed for subspace classifiers. Unlike conventional feature descriptors which are carefully designed by hand, the newly proposed method uses supervised learning to derive more robust and more discriminative descriptors. During the feature extraction process, the point-to-subspace distance is used as the inner mechanism to train parameters including filters and weights of different pixels. Experimental results on FERET and Extended Yale B database show that when using subspace classifiers, the proposed feature descriptor is more discriminative and yields higher recognition rate over other features.

Abstract:Many facial recognition algorithms, as well as their adaptations, have previously been devised during the last decades. A number is indicated for standard algorithms. They are divided into two categories: appearance-based and model-based. Three distinct linear subspace analysis strategies for appearance-based processes are presented, along with a brief examination of numerous non-linear manifold analysis approaches for face recognition. Elastic Bunch Graph matching, Active Appearance Model, and 3D Model processes are discussed. A vast variety of publicly available face datasets and performance evaluation ratings are examined. Based on previous recognition outcomes, more study areas are recommended. Face recognition has piqued the interest of academics in biometrics, pattern recognition, and computer vision. Previous research in this field had a basic fault in that it was designed to recognize just single faces, resulting in a long detection time and additional time for annotation. The goal of this study is to create a face recognition system that makes use of a machine learning algorithm and principal component analysis (PCA). The study makes use of linear discriminant analysis, multilayer perceptrons, Naive Bayes, and support vector machines. Furthermore, it obtained 97% and 100% identification accuracy, respectively, using PCA and linear discriminant analysis. The extensive comprehension CNNs are the most frequent form of machine learning algorithm used for facial recognition. CNNs are a sort of artificial neural network that performs exceptionally well at image categorization. Face recognition is a popular topic in artificial intelligence. This program was widely used in our daily life. Several face recognition devices were installed on phones to protect private information and utilized on Facebook to quickly recognize when Facebook users appeared in photographs. Several face recognition algorithms have previously been developed; yet, it remains incredibly difficult in real-world situations. A basic technique for differentiating people is influenced by factors such as partial facial occlusion, illumination, and posture variance.

Abstract:In this article, we present an individual appearance model based method, named face‐specific subspace (FSS), for recognizing human faces under variation in lighting, expression, and viewpoint. This method derives from the traditional Eigenface but differs from it in essence. In Eigenface, each face image is represented as a point in a low‐dimensional face subspace shared by all faces; however, the experiments conducted show one of the demerits of such a strategy: it fails to accurately represent the most discriminanting features of a specific face. Therefore, we propose to model each face with one individual face subspace, named Face‐Specific Subspace. Distance from the face‐specific subspace, that is, the reconstruction error, is then exploited as the similarity measurement for identification. Furthermore, to enable the proposed approach to solve the single example problem, a technique to derive multisamples from one single example is further developed. Extensive experiments on several academic databases show that our method significantly outperforms Eigenface and template matching, which intensively indicates its robustness under variation in illumination, expression, and viewpoint. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:The last few decades have witnessed a great success of subspace learning for face recognition. From principal component analysis (PCA) [43] and Fisher’s linear discriminant analysis [1], a dozen of dimension reduction algorithms have been developed to select effective subspaces for the representation and discrimination of face images [17, 21, 45, 46, 51]. It has demonstrated that human faces, although usually represented by thousands of pixels encoded in high-dimensional arrays, they are intrinsically embedded in a vary low dimensional subspace [37]. The using of subspace for face representation helps to reduce “the curse of dimensionality” in subsequent classification, and suppress variations of lighting conditions and facial expressions. In this chapter, we first briefly review conventional dimension reduction algorithms and then present the trend of recent dimension reduction algorithms for face recognition. The earliest subspace method for face recognition is Eigenface [43], which uses PCA [23] to select the most representative subspace for representing a set of face images. It extracts the principal eigenspace associated with a set of training face images. Mathematically, PCA maximizes the variance in the projected subspace for a given dimensionality, decorrelates the training face images in the projected subspace, and maximizes the mutual information between appearance (training face images) and identity (the corresponding labels) by assuming that face images are Gaussian distributed. Abstract:Face recognition is one of the biometric identification methods with the highest potential. The existing face recognition algorithms relying on the texture information of face images are affected greatly by the variation of expression, scale and illumination. Whereas the algorithms based on the shape topology weaken the influence of illumination to some extent, but the impact of expression, scale and illumination on face recognition is still unsolved. To this end, we propose a new method for face recognition by integrating texture information with shape information, called biview face recognition algorithm. The texture models are constructed by using subspace learning methods and shape topologies are formed by building graphs for face images. The proposed biview face recognition method is compared with recognition algorithms merely based on texture or shape information. Experimental results of recognizing faces under the variation of illumination, expression and scale demonstrate that the performance of the proposed biview face recognition outperforms texture-based and shape-based algorithms.

Abstract:AbstractThis paper develops a novel framework that is capable of dealing with small sample size problem posed to subspace analysis methods for face representation and recognition. In the proposed framework, three aspects are presented. The first is the proposal of an iterative sampling technique. The second is adopting divide-conquer-merge strategy to incorporate the iterative sampling technique and subspace analysis method. The third is that the essence of 2D PCA is further explored. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the traditional algorithms.

Abstract:We propose subspace distance measures to analyze the similarity between intrapersonal face subspaces, which characterize the variations between face images of the same individual. We call the conventional intrapersonal subspace average intrapersonal subspace (AIS) because the image differences often come from a large number of persons. An intrapersonal subspace is referred to as specific intrapersonal subspace (SIS) if the image differences are from just one person. We demonstrate that SIS varies significantly from person to person, and most SISs are not similar to AIS. Based on these observations, we introduce the maximum a posteriori (MAP) adaptation to the problem of SIS estimation, and apply it to the Bayesian face recognition algorithm. Experimental results show that the adaptive Bayesian algorithm outperforms the non-adaptive Bayesian algorithm as well as Eigenface and Fisherface methods if a small number of adaptation images are available.

Abstract:Automatic facial expression analysis is a vital component of intelligent Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). In this paper, we present a extensive empirical study on linear subspace methods for facial expression analysis. Locality Preserving Projections (LPP) and Orthogonal Neighborhood Preserving Projections (ONPP) are first time applied to facial expression analysis. We systematically examine a number of linear subspace methods, and show that, in our comparative studies, the Supervised LPP (SLPP) is superior in supervised methods, while ONPP performs best in unsupervised learning.

Abstract:We propose in this paper a doubly weighted subspace learning approach for face representation and recognition. Motivated by the fact that some face samples and parts are more effectual in characterizing and recognizing faces, we construct two weighting matrices based on pairwise similarity of face samples within a same class and discriminant score of each pixel within a face sample to duly emphasize both the between-sample and within-sample features. We then incorporate these two weighting matrices into three popular subspace learning methods, namely principal component analysis, linear discriminant analysis, and nonnegative matrix factorization, to obtain the discriminative features of faces for recognition. Moreover, the proposed doubly weighted technique can be readily extended to other newly proposed subspace learning algorithms to improve their performance. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can effectively enhance the discriminant power of the extracted face features and outperform existing, nonweighted subspace learning algorithms. The performance gain is even more apparent for cases with imbalanced training samples.
A Survey of 3D Face Recognition

Abstract:The image-based face recognition has made great progress over the past decade, with good performance achieved under certain constrained conditions. However, the solution is still challenged by variations in illumination, facial pose and expression. Here the main reason is that the 2D image is essentially a projection of the 3D object onto 2D space. Due to the explicit representation of facial surface, exploiting 3D shape information for face recognition is attracting more and more attention in recent years, to cope with the challenges. This paper surveys the state of the art of 3D face recognition. Firstly, the background, conception and basic procedure of 3D face recognition are introduced. Then, 3D face recognition approaches, categorized into three main groups: spatial matching methods, local feature based methods, and global feature based methods, are reviewed respectively. Besides, face recognition using bi-modal of 2D+3D is introduced briefly. Several typical 3D face databases are listed, and four typical methods are implemented for comparison. Finally, the paper summarizes the advantages, discusses the current challenges, and outlines the future development trend.

Abstract:Some of face recognition methods based on Principal Component Analysis(PCA),Two-dimensional Principal Component Analysis(2DPCA) and Fisher's Linear Discriminant Analysis(FLDA) are comparatively studied in this paper.On the basis of the analysis of characteristics,application occasion and limitations,a new method of face recognition based on combining 2DPCA and FLDA is proposed.Finally,comparison simulations are performed with the methods and their combined methods by means of ATT face database.The results show that the methods based on 2DPCA can have better recognition precision than the ones based on PCA;the method based on 2DPCA and FLDA improves the real-time characteristics in the condition of keeping the recognition precision and has the best performance.

Abstract:On the subject of optimal subspaces for appearance-based object recognition, it is generally believed that algorithms based on LDA (linear discriminant analysis) are superior to those based on PCA (principal components analysis), provided that relatively large training data sets are available. In this paper, we show that while this is generally true for classification with the nearest-neighbor classifier, it is not always the case with a maximum-likelihood classifier. We support our claim by presenting both intuitively plausible arguments and actual results on a large data set of human chromosomes. Our conjecture is that perhaps only when the underlying object classes are linearly separable would LDA be truly superior to other known subspaces of equal dimensionality.

Abstract:Subspace learning based face recognition methods have attracted considerable interests in recently years, including principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), locality preserving projection (LPP), neighborhood preserving embedding (NPE), marginal fisher analysis (MFA) and local discriminant embedding (LDE). These methods consider an n1timesn2 image as a vector in Rn 1 timesn 2 and the pixels of each image are considered as independent. While an image represented in the plane is intrinsically a matrix. The pixels spatially close to each other may be correlated. Even though we have n1xn2 pixels per image, this spatial correlation suggests the real number of freedom is far less. In this paper, we introduce a regularized subspace learning model using a Laplacian penalty to constrain the coefficients to be spatially smooth. All these existing subspace learning algorithms can fit into this model and produce a spatially smooth subspace which is better for image representation than their original version. Recognition, clustering and retrieval can be then performed in the image subspace. Experimental results on face recognition demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.
