Abstract:The single-crystalline Se nanotubes were synthesized on the surface of Au sheet electrode by cyclic voltammetry. In synthesis process, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) was used as soft-template. The formation mechanism of Se nanotubes was discussed. Furthermore, the deposits with other morphologies were also obtained by modulating parameters in the synthesis process. The products as-prepared were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and laser Raman spectrograph (LRS). The electrochemical behavior of the Se nanotubes was studied by the linear scan voltammetry.

Abstract:In this communication, we demonstrate a new approach to well-controlled growth of Se nanowires and nanotubes, which comprises a hydrothermal process and a following sonication. The hydrothermal process was used to derive Se particles of trigonal phase. In the subsequent sonication, if the Se particles were large enough, they were first broken, and then aggregated along the circumferential edge of the gap thus forming Se nanotubes; conversely, the Se particles were not broken and then aligned into nanowires. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) proved that both the Se nanotubes and nanowires were single crystalline in nature and <100> oriented. Based on a series of the TEM observation, a phenomenological mechanism for the elucidation of the controllable growth of Se nanowires and nanotubes is presented.

Abstract:Selenium (Se) nanotubes and nanowires have been controllably prepared by a solution-phase approach consisting of hydrothermal process and subsequent sonochemical process in different solvent including methanol, ethanol, acetone, dimethyl formamide, water, isopropanol and ethylene glycol. It is revealed that the formation of the Se nanotubes or nanowires is dependent on the breakage or not of the in-situ generated Se nanoparticles. The effects of the solvents on the morphology of Se nanostructures have been preliminarily discussed. Finally, Se nanotubes and nanowires have been characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scan electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:PbSe nanotubes were successfully synthesized by a reactive template approach via solvothermal transformation of trigonal selenium (t-Se) nanotubes in ethylene glycol. It was revealed that a relatively high reaction temperature (e. g., 200 degrees C), adequate ascorbic acid, and proper lead source were crucial for preparing PbSe nanotubes through shape-preserved transformation of t-Se nanotubes. Moreover, novel Se@ PbSe composite nanotubes consisting of Se nanotubes covered with a PbSe sheath were obtained by shortening the reaction time and subsequent removal of the inner Se nanotubes resulted in the formation of thin-walled PbSe nanotubes (less than 20 nm in wall thickness). On the basis of the experimental observations, a plausible mechanism for the formation of PbSe nanotubes as well as Se@ PbSe composite nanotubes was proposed. Furthermore, preliminary electrochemical measurements showed that the prepared PbSe nanotubes exhibited a good electrochemical activity.
Microfluidic System for Synthesis of Trigonal Selenium Nanowires

Abstract:A microfluidic system was developed for the synthesis of trigonal selenium(t-Se) nanowires, which was composed of a glass microchip coupled with a poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) microchip. In the glass microchip, amorphous selenium(a-Se) colloid was prepared by reducing selenious acid with an excess amount of hydrazine at a temperature of 100 C. In the coupled PMMA microchip, a-Se was transformed into more stable t-Se seeds via sonication at room temperature. The residence time of the reactants in both microchips was optimized by varying the dimension and length of the microchannel each. The t-Se nanowires were formed by anisotropic growth of selenium crystallite during sonication and aging under the assistance of beta-cyclodextrin(beta-CD). Various stages of the nanowires' growth were investigated. The as-synthesized products were characterized by powder X-Ray diffraction(XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and selected-area electron diffraction(SAED).

Abstract:A microwave-assisted solvothermal method was used for the synthesis of selenium nanorods. The obtained selenium nanorods have axis ratios higher than 100 with their diameters in the range of 30–150 nm. This method is quite simple, rapid, adjustable, and general. Besides the effects of the experimental parameters on the synthesis of the selenium nanorods, the generality of this method has also been investigated, by which other one-dimensional nanostructures, metal lead and semiconductor cadmium sulfide nanorods, were also successfully synthesized.

Abstract:This article describes a rapid, solution-phase approach to the large-scale synthesis of faceted single-crystalline Se nanotubes, in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, laser Raman spectrography, differential scanning calorimetry analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. The growth mechanism of the Se nanotubes was investigated by a series of experiments, and the rationality of the faceted morphology model for the Se nanotubes was demonstrated from the energetics and geometry. Furthermore, the electrochemical behavior of the Se nanotubes was studied by voltammetric techniques.

Abstract:Elemental selenium nanobelts have been synthesized for the first time by a novel and mild solution method. The synthetic reaction was carried out with cellulose as both reducing and morphology-directing agents in solution under simple hydrothermal conditions at low temperature, which is quite different from the thermal evaporation/reaction process for nanobelts at high temperature. Some other mild biopolyhydric chemicals such as sorbitol and polygalacturonic acid, which are related to cellulose, have also been investigated under our synthetic conditions. When sorbitol and polygalacturonic acid were used as reducing agents, different one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures, simple cylindrical nanowires, and centipede-shaped ID structures could be obtained. This method might bring a new, mild, and economical concept for the synthesis and construction of nanobelts, nanowires, and other kinds of 1D nanostructures.
Solution-phase synthesis and electrochemical hydrogen storage of ultra-long single-crystal selenium submicrotubes.

Abstract:Ultra-long single-crystalline trigonal selenium submicrotubes were synthesized using a facile one-step solution-phase approach with the assistance of nonionic surfactant Polyoxyethylene(20)sorbitan monolaurate (Tween-20), which turned out to be significant for the formation of ultra-long Se submicrotubes. XRD, Raman, SEM, and TEM were adopted to characterize the morphology, structure and phase composition of the as-prepared Se products. It was found that the length of the obtained Se submicrotubes was over 100 pm. By variation of the experimental parameters, the t-Se spheres, nanowires, and broken microtubes can be prepared. The possible growth mechanism of the ultra-long selenium submicrotubes was explained. In addition, we have also demonstrated that the synthesized Ultra-long t-Se submicrotubes using the Tween-20-assisted approach can electrochemically charge and discharge with the high capacity of 265 mAh/g (corresponding to 0.97 wt % hydrogen in SWNTs) under normal atmosphere at room temperature. Cyclic voltammetry was adopted to investigate the adsorption-ox idation behavior of ultra-long selenium submicrotubes. It was observed that the morphology of the synthesized selenium products had a remarkable influence on their capacity of electrochemical hydrogen storage. These differences in hydrogen storage capacity are likely due to the size and density of tubes as well as the microcosmic morphology of different Se samples. The as-obtained ultralong Se submicrotubes are expected to find wide applications in hydrogen storage, high-energy batteries, and optoelectronic, biologic, and catalytic fields as well as in the studies of structure-property relationships. This simple Tween-assisted approach might be extended to the preparations of one-dimensional nanostructures of tellurium and other anisotropic materials.

Abstract:Multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/CdS core/shell heterostructures have been successfully synthesized via a simple solution-phase method. The thickness of CdS shells can be facilely tuned by either the reaction temperature or time. The CdS nanoparticles are first formed directly on the surface of MWCNT, and then a uniform CdS sheath is yielded via orientated aggregation processes. The present work provides a simple route to obtain MWCNT-based core/shell heterostructures and thus is of wide interest for the studies of nanomaterials and nanodevices.

Abstract:High quality PbSe and PbTe nanocrystals were synthesized with non-injection one-pot method which could be scale up easily. The use of traditional dangerous pyrophoric trioctylphosphine (TOP) and tributylphosphine (TBP) reagents was avoided. The crystal size was controlled by the reaction time and temperature, and the shape (sphere and cube) was controlled by the use of different combinations of surfactants. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selective area electron diffraction (SAED) characterizations demonstrated the rock salt cubic structures; the transition electron microscopy (TEM) images show narrow size distributions of as-synthesized PbSe and PbTe nanocrystals. The uniform size of as-synthesized nanocrystals promoted the self-assemble of PbSe and PbTe nanocrystals into ordered superstructures.

Abstract:Single-crystalline nanobelts and nanowires of trigonal selenium (t-Se) have been selectively synthesized in micellar solutions of nonionic surfactants. In particular, t-Se nanobelts about 30 nm in thickness were obtained in micellar solutions of poly(oxyethylene(20)) octadecyl ether (C18EO20), whereas t-Se nanowires were obtained in micellar solutions of poly(oxyethylene(10)) dodecyl ether (C12EO10). The obtained t-Se nanobelts exhibit a low-energy absorption peak that is considerably red shifted from that for t-Se nanowires, which has been presumably attributed to the lower degree of crystal perfection for the t-Se nanobelts with rectangular cross sections.

Abstract:We have developed a robust method for the synthesis of silica nanotubes with controlled aspect ratios on a large scale by templating against rod-like nanocrystals. Crystalline nanorods of a nickel-hydrazine complex are first formed in reverse micelles by surfactant capping on side facets, and subsequent silica coating and selective etching give rise to silica nanotubes of high uniformity and yield. The length of the silica nanotubes is tunable in the range 37-340 nm and can reach as long as micrometers. Control of the length is conveniently achieved by tuning the hydrazine/nickel ratio, which affects the growth kinetics of the nanocrystal templates. The inner diameter of the silica nanotubes can be adjusted in the range 10-20 nm by choosing different surfactants. This method is unique in utilizing reverse micelles as discrete nanoscale reactors for the growth of nanocrystals, allowing for precise control of the features of the nanotubes and opening up new opportunities in the synthesis of novel anisotropic nanomaterials, construction of nanodevices, and potential drug delivery applications.

Abstract:Air-stable single-source molecular precursor is applied for controlled size and morphology synthesis of one-dimensional and quasi-one-dimensional CdSe nanostructures. Two different growth approaches are compared to control the growth of nanostructures. When combined with well-defined Au colloidal catalysts, the use of single-source molecular precursor allows diameter control synthesis of monodispersed CdSe nanowires from 10-30 nm via a vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. In addition, a variety of CdSe nanostructures with different morphologies can be achieved and tuned without assistance of metallic catalysts by carefully manipulating dynamic thermal decomposition process of single-source molecular precursor. The new level of synthetic control afforded by our present work opens up new opportunities for using as-synthesized CdSe nanostructures as model systems for fundamental studies as well as building blocks for larger scale functional device assembly. Importantly, we demonstrate that a single CdSe tripod can be natively configured as a nanoscale phototransistor in which photocurrent created between two tripod arms can be efficiently modulated by applying a gate voltage through the third arm.

Abstract:Single crystalline SnS nanowires with an average diameter of 30 nm and lengths of up to hundreds of micrometers were synthesized by using cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), together with SnCl2, oxalic acid (H2C2O4), and sodium sulfide (Na2S). Surfactant-Controlled Growth of Selenium Nanowires at Room Temperature

Abstract:The Na2Se was oxidized to grow spontaneously into selenium nanowires in aqueous solution using sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) as the morphology directing agent at room temperature. These selenium products were characterized by TEM, SEM, EDX, HRTEM, SEAD. The results indicate that selenium nanowires synthesized have a good crystal structure and grow along the [001] direction to form the faceted ID structure with hexagonal cross sections. The growth evolution of Se nanowires with aging time was observed by TEM. The TEM images reveal that the formation of Se nanowires is governed by a solid-solution-solid growth mechanism. Three kinds of surfactant with diferent functional groups (such as -OH, -COOH, -CONH2) were used as a ligand for the growth of Se nanocrystals in aqueous solution. It has been found that only sodium dodecylsulfate(SDS) plays an important role in directing the selenium nanocrystals to grow along designated orientation. High quality selenium nanowires can be synthesized in the presence of SDS aqueous solution at room temperature.
Topology selectivity of a conformationally flexible precursor through selenium doping

Abstract:Conformational arrangements within nanostructures play a crucial role in shaping the overall configuration and determining the properties, for example in covalent/metal organic frameworks. In on-surface synthesis, conformational diversity often leads to uncontrollable or disordered structures. Therefore, the exploration of controlling and directing the conformational arrangements is significant in achieving desired nanoarchitectures. Herein, a conformationally flexible precursor 2,4,6-tris(3-bromophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine is employed, and a random phase consisting of C3h and Cs conformers is firstly obtained after deposition of the precursor on Cu(111) at room temperature to 365 K. At low coverage (0.01 ML) selenium doping, we achieve the selectivity of the C3h conformer and improve the nanopore structural homogeneity. The ordered two-dimensional metal organic nanostructure can be fulfilled by selenium doping from room temperature to 365 K. The formation of the conformationally flexible precursor on Cu(111) is explored through the combination of high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and non-contact atomic force microscopy. The regulation of energy diagrams in the absence or presence of the Se atom is revealed by density functional theory calculations. These results can enrich the on-surface synthesis toolbox of conformationally flexible precursors, for the design of complex nanoarchitectures, and for future development of engineered nanomaterials.

Abstract:Two types of mercury selenide nanostructures, nanotowers and nanoscale dendrites, have been created with good control and high yield by a solution-liquid-solid process. Alternating twinned structures have been achieved in both the nanotowers and the nanodendrites, which originate from self-oscillations of local reaction variables sustained by the competition between the rates of supply and deposition of HgSe in the liquid mercury droplets.

Abstract:In this paper, an interesting strategy has been described for the direct synthesis of parallel aligned metal-boron alloy nanotubes on silicon substrates, involving the use of lyotropic liquid crystal of non-ionic-anionic mixed surfactants. In particular, super-long, up to the scale of millimetres, nanotubes with well-controlled inner and outer diameters can be obtained. The current lyotropic liquid crystal template method could be used as an effective strategy for the in situ synthesis of aligned one-dimensional nanostructures with the wet chemical method. The results further prove the rolling-up mechanism for the formation of noncrystal metal-boron alloy nanotubes with a layered lyotropic liquid crystal precursor.
