Abstract:Detecting and reminding of crosswalks at urban intersections is one of the most important demands for people with visual impairments. A real-time crosswalk detection algorithm, adaptive extraction and consistency analysis (AECA), is proposed. Compared with existing algorithms, which detect crosswalks in ideal scenarios, the AECA algorithm performs better in challenging scenarios, such as crosswalks at far distances, lowcontrast crosswalks, pedestrian occlusion, various illuminances, and the limited resources of portable PCs. Bright stripes of crosswalks are extracted by adaptive thresholding, and are gathered to form crosswalks by consistency analysis. On the testing dataset, the proposed algorithm achieves a precision of 84.6% and a recall of 60.1%, which are higher than the bipolarity-based algorithm. The position and orientation of crosswalks are conveyed to users by voice prompts so as to align themselves with crosswalks and walk along crosswalks. The field tests carried out in various practical scenarios prove the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed navigation approach. (C) 2017 SPIE and IS&T
Inter-green interval calculation for signalized intersections

Abstract:To ensure the safety and to improve the efficiency of the traffic, as well as avoiding the jam during the transition of conflict phase, a calculate method of inter-green interval has been proposed. Then based on the joint knowledge of the traffic control theory and the traffic conflict principles, with the centering on the security transition function, the implication of amber interval and whole-red time has been clarified and then confirmed. After that, the safety conditions for the drivers which should be satisfied in the condition of parking choice and acrossing the intersections security are also suggested. As the research progresses, the possibility of causing the dilemma zone emerged in the different critical stopping distances and the limitation clearance distances has been discussed, further calculating method of minimum inter-green interval which could eliminate the dilemma zone is finally determined to distribute the amber interval and the whole-red time. With the example of the real intersections in the city of Changchun, the rationality and practicability of the method is well proved.
Effect of Technological Distractions on Pedestrian Safe-Crossing Performance During Mixed Pedestrian–Bicycle Flow Overlapping with Turning Vehicles: A Case Study of Hangzhou, China

Abstract:Crashes involving pedestrians are most likely to occur when the pedestrian is crossing the road. In the particular context of road traffic systems in China, with frequent on-crosswalk cycling and pedestrian green signals overlapping with vehicle right- and left-turn green signals, walking on a signalized intersection crosswalk seems much more challenging. As such, pedestrians need to be more cautious and perform properly. The present study designed tasks for safe crossing at this form of intersection and, using video cameras, explored the performance of pedestrians. Taking smartphones as source of distraction, comparisons were made between distracted and nondistracted pedestrians. Of the phone use rate of 20.3% while crossing, 13.4% were visual-manual interactions, 3.5% were hand-free phones, and 3.4% were hand-held phones. For both genders, pedestrians who crossed while visually-manually interacting with a mobile or talking/listening on a mobile were less likely to glance before initiating crossing, less likely to look at traffic while crossing, less likely to avoid on-crosswalk opposite pedestrians and bicycles, and less likely to make eye contact with right/left-turning drivers. Surprisingly, female pedestrians who were texting took longer to react to the pedestrian green signal than males who were texting. Findings of this study suggest that distraction while crossing roads exposes pedestrians to a high risk of accident. Hence, to improve pedestrian safety, the authors advise relevant actions such as unsafe-crossing warning technologies; pedestrian, bicyclist, and driver education; and law enforcement. Study on the risk assessment of Pedestrian-Vehicle conflicts in channelized Right-Turn lanes based on the Hierarchical-Grey Entropy-Cloud model

Abstract:Channelized right-turn lanes (CRTLs) in urban areas have been effective in improving the efficiency of right-turning vehicles but have also presented negative impacts on pedestrian movement. Pedestrians experience confusion regarding the allocation of road space when crossing crosswalks within these areas, leading to frequent conflicts between pedestrians and motor vehicles. In this paper, considering the characteristics of pedestrian-vehicle conflicts at channelized right-turn lanes as well as the ambiguity and uncertainty of the causes, a comprehensive assignment combined with a cloud model is proposed as a risk evaluation model for pedestrian-vehicle conflicts. The study established a risk indicator system based on three aspects of the transportation system: pedestrians, motor vehicles, and the road environment. Combining the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), grey relational analysis (GRA), and entropy weighting method (EWM) to get the weights of indicator combinations, and then using the cloud model to realize quantitative and qualitative language transformation to complete the risk evaluation. This study employs specific road segments in Qingdao as a validation case for model analysis. The results indicate that the model's evaluation outcomes exhibited a significant level of agreement with the findings from field investigations during both peak and off-peak periods. It is demonstrated that the model has good performance for the safety assessment of pedestrian-vehicle conflicts at CRTL, and it also reflects the ability of the model to assess fuzzy randomness problems. It provides participation value for urban pedestrian-vehicle safety problems as well as applications in other fields.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to investigate the unsafe conditions of pedestrian crossings at signalized intersections under the mixed traffic environment in Changsha, China. For this purpose, based really pedestrian-related crash data of Changsha city and visualized crash geographic information, six typical urban signalized intersections were selected. The peak and off-peak surveillance videos of six signalized intersections were collected via field surveys, 1,070 conflicts were extracted through using professional trajectory tracking software Traker to track pedestrian and vehicle trajectories. PSMT (Pedestrian Safety Margin Time) was used as an indicator to identify the severity of conflicts, and manually recorded the characteristics of pedestrian crossing behavior, vehicles and roads during the conflict. An Ordered Probit model was established to analyze the risk factors that led to different severities of the conflict between pedestrians and vehicles. The model outcome indicates a significant relationship between the severity level and characteristics of pedestrian behavior, vehicles and conflict. Moreover, it was identified that, in addition to the above characteristics, roadway characteristics significantly influenced likelihood of severe pedestrian-vehicle conflict. Finally, these factors are discussed, and suggestions for improving the pedestrian traffic environment are proposed from different perspectives.

Grey evaluation model of highway emergency lane location

Abstract:In order to improve the precision of emergency lane location,this paper thoroughly analyzed influence factors of the emergency lane location from the view of traffic accident statistical data,road conditions and vehicle status,expounded the theory of center-point triangular whitenization weight function,and put forward the grey evaluation model of the emergency lane location.The running safety of the unit section on the long-steep downgrade was evaluated with the model.The unit section of "poor" class was used as the candidate section for setting emergency lane.The accurate positions of the emergency lanes at the end of section 9 and section 20 were determined based on comparison with the gray comprehensive clustering coefficients of adjacent candidate sections.Setting effect of emergency lanes shows that the emergency lane positions determined by the model are scientific and rational.

The safety margin and perceived safety of pedestrians at unmarked roadway

Abstract:Many pedestrians cross out of crosswalks (i.e., unmarked roadway) in developing countries, but researches about their safety are under reported. This study explored safety related factors and their casual relations at unmarked roadway. Videos of 254 pedestrians' crossing process were analyzed objectively on safety and evaluated subjectively on perceived safety. The two safety indexes are consistent on important factors, with higher running frequency reduce safety while bigger group size increase safety. The two factors had contrary effect on pedestrian speed, which is positively related with safety. Higher looking frequency before crossing also enhance safety, partly by reducing running frequency and increasing going backwards with its planning nature. Longer waiting time before crossing can facilitate this planning behavior while at the same time leads to bigger group size. Buses are safer than cars, but they are not perceived as safer. In situations where only some vehicles yield, yielding ones bring danger due to sight blocking of unyielding ones in adjacent lanes. These findings can be applied to the design of intelligent transportation systems and the education of drivers and pedestrians to improve safety. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The escalating urbanisation fuelled by population growth and economic expansion has triggered a notable surge in vehicular and pedestrian traffic, amplifying their interaction. Nonetheless, inadequate research, investment, and prioritisation have engendered inefficient pedestrian crossing infrastructures. This study endeavours to bridge this gap by crafting tailored warrants suited to Indian traffic dynamics, facilitating the implementation of pedestrian crossing facilities. Employing PV2 threshold value analysis, this study scrutinises pedestrian behavioural traits, such as gap acceptance and waiting time. Additionally, K-means clustering analysis delineates distinct levels of severity (LOSe), grounded in variables encompassing vehicular and pedestrian flow, gap acceptance, and waiting time. By establishing the nexus between vehicular volume and gap acceptance and vehicular volume and waiting time, a spectrum of PV2 threshold values is delineated. These LOS categories guide the selection of pedestrian facilities, ensuring secure pedestrian–vehicle interactions. Leveraging PV2 charts and vehicular volume assessments, our research identifies fitting pedestrian crossing infrastructures, thereby bolstering road safety for pedestrians and vehicles, underpinning sustainable urban mobility.

Safety Evaluation for Expressways: A Comparative Study for Macroscopic and Microscopic Indicators

Abstract:Objective: This article is to assess the performance of 3 macroscopic safety indicators (speed, speed dispersion, and volume) and two microscopic potential crash risks (time to collision and deceleration rate to avoid crash) on safety evaluation for expressways.Methods: Field data were collected at 3 locations for 4 different time periods on an expressway in Beijing, China. The speed of each vehicle, headway time, and vehicle length were recorded by a traffic management system. The 5 safety indicators were thus calibrated on the basis of the collected data. Further, consistency and comparative analyses were applied to assess the performance of indicators.Results: According to the analyses, speed dispersion was a better predictor of the two microscopic potential risks compared to the two macroscopic indicators.Conclusions: Speed dispersion is recommended to proactively assess road safety because (1) it provides consistent risk evaluation with microscopic potential risks and (2) it makes data collection easier.
Analysis of the safety trend of metro operation based on grey cluster method

Abstract:In order to estimate the safety level of the metro operation and obtain the risk trend of the metro,this paper performed the safety grading evaluation of a subway line for one year operation by the gray cluster method.Five critical equipment failures which have significant impact on the operation are selected as the evaluation indexes.On basis of the historical data,the grey cluster evaluation contributes to decrease subjective and in which the time characters of the equipment failures are reflected.The safety level of the metro operation is divided into five grades,which corresponds to the threshold points of 15% 、35% 、50% 、65% 、85% in the cumulative frequency curves.The whiten functions are constructed to get the grey values for each evaluation index.Combine the weight of the evaluation indexes,the safety grade for each month is calculated.The grey cluster method can provide reference for the analysis of the safety trend of the metro operation.
Traffic Safety Assessment and Injury Severity Analysis for Undivided Two-Way Highway–Rail Grade Crossings

Abstract:The safety and reliability of undivided two-way highway–rail grade crossings (HRGCs) are of paramount importance in transportation systems. Utilizing crash data from the Federal Railroad Administration between 2020 and 2021, this study aims to predict crash injury severity outcomes and investigate various factors influencing injury severities. The χ2 test was first used to select variables that were significantly associated with injury outcomes. By employing the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model and interpretable SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP), a cross-category safety assessment that offers an evidence-based hierarchy and statistical inference of risk factors associated with crashes, crossings, vehicles, drivers, and environment was provided for killed, injured, and uninjured outcomes. Some significant predictors overlapped between the killed and injured models, such as old driver, driver was in vehicle, main track, went around the gate, adverse crossing surface, and truck, while the other different significant factors revealed that the model could distinguish between different severity levels. Additionally, the results suggested that the model has varying performances in predicting different injury severities, with the killed model having the highest accuracy of 93.36%. The SHAP dependency plots for the top three features also ensure reliable predictions and inform potential interventions aimed at strengthening traffic safety and risk management practices, such as enhanced warning systems and targeted educational campaigns for older drivers.

Cross or wait? Pedestrian decision making during clearance phase at signalized intersections.

Abstract:Pedestrians arriving at clearance phase (Flashing Don't Walk) face different levels of risk depending on behavioral choice afterwards. However, few studies have focused on the choices pedestrians make during this phase. This field study analyzed pedestrian choices after arrival, evaluated safety of the choices, and built a model to identify the predictors of pedestrian choices. It was found that pedestrians arriving during clearance phase made dynamic decisions based on the changing contexts. Specifically, the majority made the decision to "cross" as opposed to "wait" (85.2% vs. 14.8% respectively), although only the latter choice is legal. Seventy-nine percent of the pedestrians did not finish crossing the intersection before the traffic light turned red, and they walked 41% of the road width during a red light. For those waited, roughly half of them waited until green or crossed at an intersecting crosswalk, while others finally started on red light. Nevertheless, the waited pedestrians still faced lower risk than those crossed prematurely in terms of running behaviors, and conflicts with vehicles. Pedestrians are more likely to cross immediately after arrival when they are younger, are not engaged in secondary tasks, arrived at a position farther from approaching vehicles at the near side of the road, or arrived at a time when there are more pedestrians crossing the road. Although fewer pedestrians choose to cross when the required speed is higher (due to a wider road or less remaining time), the required speed they choose to cross at is far higher than their actual speed. These findings are essential for realistic pedestrian simulations and targeted safety countermeasures. They also imply the need for changes to certain traffic regulations and signal design to facilitate safe decision making at clearance phase.
Conflict-Based safety evaluations at unsignalized intersections using surrogate safety measures

Abstract:Conflict-based road safety assessments may provide a deeper insight into the processes leading to crashes compared to assessments solely based on field crash data. The evaluation of road safety is conducted on specific road segments using different surrogate measure of safety indicators, such as temporal, spatial, and kinematic proximity measures, depending on the relevant context and applicability of these measures. Therefore, this study endeavored to develop a methodology by adopting safety measures such as post encroachment time (PET) and conflicting speeds of through vehicles for crossing maneuvers and time to collision (TTC) for rear-end collisions at five unsignalized intersections in urban mixed traffic conditions. Critical conflicts are calculated by calculating a speed variable known as the critical speed, which is based on the braking distance. A study found that the motorized two wheeler (MTW) categories involve the highest proportion of critical conflict with right-turning vehicles, followed by cars, autos, and light commercial vehicle (LCVs). Furthermore, crossing conflicts were modeled as a function using the generalized linear regression approach. The findings revealed that the most significant factors were traffic volume and vehicular composition in a conflicting stream. The unsupervised classification technique k-mean clustering was used to determine the defined severity level threshold for rear-end maneuvers. The result observed was that a TTC threshold of less than 1.15 s was identified as high-risk vehicular interaction. Additional investigation indicated that presence of certain moving vehicle categories, including MTWs and cars, led to a higher proportion of critical crossing conflicts. The conceptualized safety framework can be applied to evaluate safety at unsignalized intersections in the mixed traffic scenarios.
Pedestrian crossing behaviors at uncontrolled multi-lane mid-block crosswalks in developing world

Abstract:Introduction: The gap acceptance theory was primarily used to study pedestrian crossing behaviors, in accordance to static gaps that are calculated in the light of the cross section of crosswalk. However, pedestrians will face a series of dynamic gaps (especially at any uncontrolled multi-lane crosswalk) when they decide to cross the street, thus, pedestrians' decisions are made based on the dynamic gaps of each lane. Method: Pedestrians' crossing behaviors at uncontrolled multi-lane mid-block crosswalk were investigated in this study. The lane-based gap (LGAP) was defined and five mid-block crosswalks were selected for observation in Wuhan, China. Pedestrians' behaviors and the corresponding traffic statuses were videoed as collected data, whose statistical analysis indicates that most pedestrians choose the rolling gap crossing strategy, which is different from existing research. Moreover, a logistic regression model was established to evaluate various influencing parameters (such as gender, age, waiting time and traffic volume) on the pedestrians' crossing strategy, whose accuracy is not satisfying. Therefore, the pedestrian dynamic gap acceptance (PDGA) model was put forward to describe pedestrians' crossing behaviors at any multi-lane crosswalk based on detailed analysis of the pedestrians' decision procedure. Results: The corresponding results show that its accuracy may be up to 88.6% to well describe pedestrians' crossing behaviors. Conclusions: The PDGA model is appropriate to analyze pedestrians' dynamic decision procedures at multi-lane mid-block crosswalks. Practical application: The findings of this study can be used for safety and performance evaluation of crosswalks at mid-block locations in developing countries like China and India.

Abstract:Conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles are one of the common safety issues at signalized intersections. Pedestrian Flashing GREEN (FG), a time interval for pedestrians on crosswalks to safely finish crossing before the next phase occurs, may fail to clear the crosswalk in the allotted time, due to significant pedestrian non-compliant behavior. In this manner, probability of pedestrian-vehicle exposures increases when non-compatible vehicle flows are released at the next immediate phase. This paper seeks to address this issue by presenting a traffic signal control strategy for urban traffic networks that aims to minimize vehicle traveling delay (increase efficiency) as well as pedestrian crossing risk (increase safety). First, a macroscopic model for pedestrian-vehicle mixed-flow networks is proposed. Considering the high-incidence rate of pedestrian violations during FG, an additional Dynamic All RED (DAR) phase is introduced at the end of each FG period, whose duration is adaptively adjusted according to the number of non-compliant pedestrians. With computational complexity being a concern for our model, an evolutionary algorithm with repairing mechanism (EARM), is proposed to solve our problem. Case studies are provided to illustrate the potential impact of the pedestrian movement to the vehicle traffic networks when pedestrian safety is considered in the system, as well as the efficacy of our traffic light control strategy for pedestrians and vehicles on risk reduction.
Evaluating current and future pedestrian mid-block crossing safety treatments using virtual reality simulation

Abstract:Virtual reality (VR) simulation offers a proactive, cost effective, immersive, and low risk platform for studying pedestrian safety. Within immersive virtual environments (IVEs), existing and alternative design conditions and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technologies can be directly compared, prior to real-world implementation, to assess the impacts alternatives may have on pedestrian safety, perception, and behavior. Environmental factors can be controlled within IVEs so that test trials are replicable and directly comparable. Coupled with stated preference feedback, participants' observed preferences and behavior provide a comprehensive understanding of the impacts of proposed design alternatives. This research presents a case study of pedestrian behavior with three different mid-block crossing safety treatments modeled within a one-to-one scale IVE replication of a real-world location in Charlottesville, Virginia. The three safety treatments consider both passive and active collision avoidance designs and technologies, including (1) the existing painted crosswalk, (2) the addition of rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs), and (3) a pedestrian to everything (P2X) ITS phone application. Additionally, this paper demonstrates a VR simulation experimental design and framework for testing pedestrian safety treatments within naturalistic and replicable IVEs to assess both stated and observed preferences and behaviors of pedestrians. Repeated measures ANOVA indicated changes in both accepted gap size (p = 0.001) and crossing speed (p < 0.001) with alternative safety treatments. Generalized mixed models showed that pedestrians waited for statistically larger gap sizes (p = 0.02) without the assistance of alternative safety technologies (RRFBs and P2X application) and pedestrians crossed the street significantly faster (p = 0.001) without the alternative safety technologies, leading to unsafe dashing behavior. Through post-experiment surveys, it was found that participants perceived the As Built environment to be the least safe of the three treatments and that their sense of risk within the IVE was realistic. Considering both the observed crossing behavior and stated feedback, pedestrians exhibited intentionally unsafe darting behavior without assistive safety technology. This study demonstrates how VR simulation may be leveraged to study both stated preferences and observed behavior for understanding the safety implications of alternative roadway designs, providing a proactive approach for assessing and designing for pedestrian safety.

Abstract:Traffic accidents are a threat to human lives, particularly pedestrians causing premature deaths. Therefore, it is necessary to devise systems to prevent accidents in advance and respond proactively, using potential risky situations as one of the surrogate safety measurements. This study introduces a new concept of a pedestrian safety system that combines the field and the centralized processes. The system can warn of upcoming risks immediately in the field and improve the safety of risk frequent areas by assessing the safety levels of roads without actual collisions. In particular, this study focuses on the latter by introducing a new analytical framework for a crosswalk safety assessment with behaviors of vehicle/pedestrian and environmental features. We obtain these behavioral features from actual traffic video footage in the city with complete automatic processing. The proposed framework mainly analyzes these behaviors in multidimensional perspectives by constructing a data cube structure, which combines the LSTM based predictive collision risk estimation model and the on line analytical processing operations. From the PCR estimation model, we categorize the severity of risks as four levels and apply the proposed framework to assess the crosswalk safety with behavioral features. Our analytic experiments are based on two scenarios, and the various descriptive results are harvested the movement patterns of vehicles and pedestrians by road environment and the relationships between risk levels and car speeds. Thus, the proposed framework can support decision makers by providing valuable information to improve pedestrian safety for future accidents, and it can help us better understand their behaviors near crosswalks proactively. In order to confirm the feasibility and applicability of the proposed framework, we implement and apply it to actual operating CCTVs in Osan City, Korea.
