Abstract:The anionic monocarborane alkyne [12-(HC?C)-CB11H11](-) was employed as a ligand towards Cu(i) to form terminal alkyne complexes. Spectroscopic methods and X-ray crystallography allowed for a detailed structural analysis of complexes with nitrogen ligands, which are the first examples featuring carborane-C?CH -> metal pi coordination. Addition of phosphines to compound 2 afforded homoleptic Cu(i) complexes [Cu(PR3)(n)](+) (4), in which case the carborane becomes a non-coordinating anion. Polymeric acetylide 5 was obtained in almost quantitative yield from 2 and proved to be a suitable precursor to heterobimetallic Cu(i)/M(ii) (M = Pd, Pt) alkynide complexes with side-on and end-on coordination to the metal centers.

Abstract:The prototype hetero-binuclear complexes containing metal-metal bonds, {CpRh[E2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (Cp = Cp* = eta 5-Me5C5, E = S(5a), Se(5b); Cp = Cp = eta 5-1,3-tBu2C5H3, E = S(6a), Se(6b)) and {CpCo[E2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (Cp = Cp* = eta 5-Me5C5, E = S(7a), Se(7b); Cp = Cp = eta 5-C5H5, E = S(8a), Se(8b)) were obtained from the reactions of 16-electron complexes CpRh[E2C2(B10H10)] (Cp = Cp*, E = S(1a), Se(1b); Cp = Cp, E = S(2a), Se(2b)), CpCo[E2C2(B10H10)] (Cp = Cp*, E = S(3a), Se(3b); Cp = Cp, E = S(4a), Se(4b)) with Fe(CO)5 in the presence of Me3NO. The molecular structures of {Cp*Rh[E2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (E = S(5a), Se(5b)), {CpRh[S2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (6a) {Cp*Co[S2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (7a) and {CpCo[S2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (8a) have been determined by X-ray crystallography. All these complexes were characterized by elemental analysis and IR and NMR spectra.

Abstract:Dichalcogenolato-functionalized nido-carborane ((NMe4)[7,8-(HS)2-7,8-C2B9H10]) L was developed for the formation of reactive 16-electron Ir and Rh complexes. The mono-nuclear 16-electron complex (NMe4)[Cp*Ir(7,8-(S)2-7,8-C2B9H10)] (1) and bi-nuclear 16-electron neutral metallacarborane (Cp*Ir)[1,2-(S)2-3-(η5-Cp*)-3,1,2-IrC2B9H9] (2) were synthesized step by step from the reactions of L with half-sandwich metal compounds. In the presence of NaH, the reaction of L with [Cp*RhCl2]2 afforded bi-nuclear complex (Cp*Rh)2(μ-H)[7,8-(S)2-7,8-C2B9H10] (3) in good yield. Additionally, [1-S-2-O-1,2-C2B10H10]2− was employed in the construction of M–M bonds, and the bi-nuclear complex (Cp*Ir)2[1-S-2-O-1,2-C2B10H9] (4) was synthesized through the reaction of [1-S-2-O-1,2-C2B10H10]2− with [Cp*IrCl2]2. All complexes were characterized by spectroscopic and crystallographic analysis.
Synthesis and Characterization of Mono- and Dinuclear Nickel Complexes with Dichalcogenolate O-Carboranyl Ligands

Abstract:Three mono- and dinuclear nickel complexes with dichalcogenolate o-carboranyl ligands were synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography. The reactions of Ni(COD)2(COD=1,5-octadiene) with [(THF)3LiE2C2B10H10Li(THF)]2 (E=S, Se) in THF in the presence of air in different ratios afforded the mono- and dinuclear nickel complexes of formulae Li(THF)4]2[Ni(E2C2B10H10)2] (E=S, 1a; E=Se, 1b) and [Li(THF)4]2[Ni2(E2C2B10H10)3] (E=S, 2a; E=Se, 2b). In 2a, two nickel atoms are connected by one chalcogen (η1,η2-S2C2B10H10) bridging ligand with strong metal-metal interaction. Complex of formula (PPh3)2Ni(S2C2B10H10)·0.5THF (3a) was also obtained from the reaction of (PPh3)2NiCl2 and [(THF)3LiS2C2B10H10Li(THF)]2.
Isolation of an Eleven‐Atom Polydentate Carbon‐Chain Chelate Obtained by Cycloaddition of a Cyclic Osmium Carbyne with an Alkyne

Abstract:Carbon ligands have long played an important role in organometallic chemistry. However, previous examples of all-carbon chelating ligands are limited. Herein, we present a novel complex with an eleven-atom carbon chain as a polydentate chelating ligand. This species was formed by the [2+2+2] cycloaddition reaction of two equivalents of an alkyne with an osmapentalyne that contains the smallest carbyne bond angle (127.9°) ever observed. Density functional calculations revealed that electron-donating groups play a key role in the stabilization of this polydentate carbon-chain chelate. This process is also the first [2+2+2] cycloaddition reaction of an alkyne with a late-transition-metal carbyne complex. This study not only enriches the chemistry of polydentate carbon-chain chelates, but also deepens our understanding of the chelating ability of carbon ligands.

Abstract:A series of carboranylamidinate-based 3d metal complexes are reported. Treatments of 3d metal dichlorides (CoCl2, NiCl2(DME), CuCl2) with the lithium salts of carboranylamidines (Cab(N)H) generate the mononuclear C,N-coordinated complexes [(RN=C(closo-1,2-C2B10H10)-(NHR)](2)M (1-6; M = Co, Ni, Cu; R = iPr, Cy) in moderate yields, respectively. These complexes have similar structures in the solid state, in which the metal atom is coordinated to two nitrogen atoms and bonded to two cage carbon atoms in a distorted-tetrahedral geometry. As a noninnocent ligand, Cab(N)H can be modified to produce carboranylamidinate thiol (Cab(N)SH) and nido derivatives Dcab(N)H (9, 10), respectively. Reaction of cupric acetate with 1 equiv of CabNSH gave the binuclear complexes {[RN=C(closo-1,2-C2B10H10)(NHR)]SCu}(2) (R = iPr (7), Cy (8)) in 66 and 63% yields, respectively. The structure of 7 shows the formation of a Cu-Cu bond, and the geometry of the Cu2S2 core is planar. The zwitterionic nickel dicarbollide complexes (Dcab(N))Ni(PPh3)Cl (11, 12) were prepared by reactions of the lithium salts of Dcab(N)H (9, 10) with NiCl2(PPh3)(2) in THF. All complexes were characterized by elemental analysis and IR and NMR spectroscopy. The structures of 1, 3-5, 7, and 9-11 were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract:Sulfur and oxygen functionalized cyclopentandienyl half-sandwich cobalt dicarbonyl complexes [η5-C5H4(CH2)2SCH2CH3]Co(CO)2 (3) and [η5-C5H4(CH2)2OCH3]Co(CO)2 (7) were prepared. Oxidation of 3 or 7 with I2 led to formation of 18-electron complexes [η5-C5H4(CH2)2SCH2CH3]CoI2 (4) and [η5-C5H4(CH2)2OCH3]Co(CO)I2 (8). The reactions of diiodide complex (4) with dilithium 1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane(12)-1,2-dichalcogenolates [(THF)3LiE2C2B10H10Li(THF)]2 [E=S (1a), Se (1b)] afforded 18-electron mononuclear complexes [η5-C5H4(CH2)2SCH2CH3]Co(E2C2B10H10) [E=S (5a), Se (5b)] in which sulfur atoms of side-chain were attached via an intramolecular coordination. Complex 7 reacted with 1a and 1b to give the binuclear complexes {[η5-C5H4(CH2)2OCH3]Co(E2C2B10H10)}2 [E=S (10a), Se (10b)]. The molecular structures of 5a and 10b were determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis. According to the X-ray structure analyses, 10b contains two o-carborane diselenolate bridges, and each Cp′Co fragment is attached to one terminal and two bridging selenolato ligands. The central Co2Se2 four-membered ring is planar, and the direct metal–metal interaction is absent.

Abstract:A series of chalcogen-containing carborane derivatives were synthesized through a one-pot reaction. The nonconjugated six-membered ring of carborane-fused disulfide (1) can be electrochemically reduced to a dithiolate derivative. The five-membered ring of carborane-fused chalcogenophenes (2−4) showed aromaticity and considerable σ−π conjugation. The dicarborane chalcogenides (5−7) showed intramolecular charge-transfer-induced emission. These chalcogen-containing carborane derivatives provided a useful platform to study the electron interaction systematically and shed some light on the design of carborane-based optoelectronic materials.

Abstract:Metallocene complex (Cp2ZrCl2)-Zr-tt (Cp-tt = eta(5)-1,3-(Bu2C5H3)-Bu-t) (1) has been prepared from the reaction of LiCptt with ZrCl4 in good yield. Reactions of 1 with dilithium dichalcogenolate o-carboranes afforded new type of half-sandwich compounds with dichalcogenolate o-carboranyl ligands [Li(THF)(4)][(CpZr)-Zr-tt(E2C2B10H10)(2)] (E = S, 2a; E = Se, 2b) in which only one cyclopentadienyl ring ligand existed. Complexes 1 and 2a were structurally characterized by X-ray analyses. In complex 2a, the Zr(IV) ion is eta(5)-bound to one 1,3-di-tert-cyclopentadienyl ring and a-bound to four mu(2)-sulfur atoms of two dithio-carboranes. The zirconium atom and four sulfur atoms form a distorted pyramid. The coordination sphere around the zirconium atom resembles in a piano stool structure with four legs of sulfur atoms and the fulcrum at the zirconium atom.

Abstract:1, 1 '-( 3- Oxapentamethylene) dicyclopentadiene [ O( CH2CH2C5H5)(2)] ( 1), containing a flexible chain- bridged group, was synthesized by the reaction of sodium cyclopentadienide with bis( 2- chloroethyl) ether through a slightly modified literature procedure. Furthermore, the binuclear cobalt( III) complex O[CH2CH2(eta(5)- C5H4) Co(CO) I-2] (2) ( 3) and insoluble polynuclear rhodium( III) complex {O[CH2CH2(eta(5)- C5H4) RhI2](2)} (n) ( 8) were obtained from reactions of 1 with the corresponding metal fragments and they react easily with PPh3 to give binuclear metal complexes, O[CH2CH2(eta(C5H4)-C-5) Co(PPh3)I-2](2) ( 4) and O[CH2CH2(eta(5)- C5H4) Rh( PPh3)I-2] (2) ( 9), respectively. Complexes 3, 4 and 9 react with bidentate dilithium dichalcogenolato ortho- carborane to give eight binuclear half- sandwich ortho-carboranedichalcogenolato cobalt( III) and rhodium( III) complexes O[CH2CH2(eta(C5H4)-C-5) Co(PPh3)(E2C2B10H10)](2) ( E = S ( 5a) and Se ( 5b)), O[CH2CH2(eta(5)- C5H4)](2)Co-2(E2C2B10H10) ( E = S ( 6a) and Se ( 6b)), O[CH2CH2(eta(5)- C5H4) Co(E2C2B10H10)](2) ( E = S ( 7a) and Se ( 7b)) and O[CH2CH2(eta(5)- C5H4) Rh(PPh3)( E2C2B10H10)] (2) ( E = S ( 10a) and Se ( 10b)). All complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, NMR spectra (H-1, C-13, P-31 and B-11 NMR) and IR spectroscopy. The molecular structures of 3, 5a, 6a, 6b, 9 and 10b were determined by X- ray diffractometry.

Abstract:The synthesis of half-sandwich transition metal complexes containing both 1,2-dichalcogenolato-1,2-dicarba-closo-docecaborane (Cab(E,E)) [Cab(E,E)=E(2)C(2)(B(10)H(10)); E = S, Se] and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands is described. Addition of mono-NHC ligand to the 16e half-sandwich dichalcogenolato carborane complexes [Cp*Rh(Cab(E,E))], [Cp*Ir(Cab(S,S))], [(p-cymene)Ru(Cab(S,S))] (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) gives corresponding mononuclear 18e dithiolate complexes of the type [LM(Cab(E,E))(NHC)]: [Cp*M(Cab(S,S))(1-ethenyl-3-methylimidazolin-2-ylidene)] (M = Ir (2), Rh (3)), [Cp*Rh(Cab(E,E))(3-methyl-1-picolyimidazolin-2-ylidene)] [E = S (6), Se (7)], [(p-cymene)Ru(Cab(S,S))(NHC)] [NHC = 1-ethenyl-3-methylimidazolin-2-ylidene (4), 3-methyl-1-picolyimidazolin-2-ylidene (8)], whereas bis-NHC give centrosymmetric binuclear complexes [{Cp*M(Cab(S,S))}(2)(1,1'-dimethyl-3,3'-methylene(imidazolin-2-ylidene))] [M = Rh (10), Ir (11)]. The complexes were characterized by IR, NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. In addition, X-ray structure analyses were performed on complexes 2-4, 6, 8, 10 and 11.

Abstract:Metalladichalcogenolate cluster complexes [Cp'Co{E(2)C(2)(B(10)H(10))}]{Co2(CO)5} [Cp' = eta5-C5H5, E = S(3a), E = Se(3b); Cp' = eta5-C5(CH3)5, E = S(4a), E = Se(4b)], {CpCo[E(2)C(2)(B(10)H(10))]}(2)Mo(CO)2] [E = S(5a), Se(5b)], Cp*Co(micro2-CO)Mo(CO)(py)2[E(2)C(2)(B(10)H(10))] [E = S(6a), Se(6b)], Cp*Co[E(2)C(2)(B(10)H(10))]Mo(CO)2[E(2)C(2)(B(10)H(10))] [E = S(7a), Se(7b)], (Cp'Co[E(2)C(2)(B(10)H(10))]W(CO)2 [E(2)C(2)(B(10)H(10))] [Cp' = eta5-C5H5, E = S(8a), E = Se(8b); Cp' = eta5-C5(CH3)5, E = S(9a), E = Se(9b)], {CpCo[E(2)C(2)(B(10)H(10))]}(2)Ni [E = S(10a), Se(10b)] and 3,4-(PhCN(4)S)-3,1,2-[PhCN(4)SCo(Cp)S(2)]-3,1,2-CoC(2)B(9)H(8) 12 were synthesized by the reaction of [Cp'CoE(2)C(2)(B(10)H(10))] [Cp' = eta5-C5H5, E = S(1a), E = Se(1b); Cp' = eta5-C5(CH3)5, E = S(2a), E = Se(2b)] with Co2(CO)8, M(CO)3(py)3 (M = Mo, W), Ni(COD)2, [Rh(COD)Cl]2, and LiSCN4Ph respectively. Their spectrum analyses and crystal structures were investigated. In this series of multinuclear complexes, 3a,b and 4a,b contain a closed Co3 triangular geometry, while in complexes 5a-7b three different structures were obtained, the tungsten-cobalt mixed-metal complexes have only the binuclear structure, and the nickel-cobalt complexes were obtained in the trinuclear form. A novel structure was found in metallacarborane complex 12, with a B-S bond formed at the B(7) site. The molecular structures of 4a, 5a, 6a, 7b, 9a, 9b, 10a and 12 have been determined by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract:Both dinuclear [3] ferrocenophane derivatives of the type Fe(C5H4E)(2)[MLn] [E = S,Se; MLn = Cp* - Cr(NO) (1), Cp* Mo(NO) (2a,2b), CpMo(NO) (3), Cp* W(NO) (4a,4b), Ca2Mo (6b), Cp2W (7a)] and trinuclear 1,1' - ferrocene dichalcogenato complexes Fe(C5H4E)(2)[MLn](2)[MLn = Cp* Cr(NO)(2), E = S(8a), Se(8b)] were synthesized and characterized by their IR, H-1 MMR and EI - MS spectra as well as their elemental analyses.

Abstract:The 16-electron half-sandwich complexes Cp*Rh[E2C2(B10H10)] (E = S, 1a; Se, 1b) react with [Ru(COD)Cl-2](x) under different conditions to give different types of heterometallic complexes. When the reactions were carried out in THF for 24 h, the binuclear Rh/Ru complexes [Cp*Rh(mu-Cl)(2)(COD) Ru][E2C2(B10H10)] (E = S, 2a; Se, 2b) bridged by two Cl atoms and the binuclear Rh/Rh complexes (Cp*Rh)(2)[E2C2(B10H10)] (E = S, 3a; Se, 3b) with direct Rh-Rh bond can be isolated in moderate yields. [Ru(COD)Cl-2] fragments in 2a and 2b have inserted into the Rh-E bond. If the [Ru(COD) Cl2] x was reacted with 1a in the presence of K2CO3 in methanol solution, the product [Cp*Rh(COD)]Ru[S2C2(B10H10]] (4a), K[(mu-Cl)(mu-OCH3) Ru(COD)](4) (5a) and 3a were obtained. The B(3)-H activation in complex 4a was found. However, when the reaction between 1b and [Ru(COD)Cl-2](x) was carried out in excessive NaHCO3, the carborane cage opened products {Cp*Rh[S2C2(B9H10)]}Ru(COD) (6b), {Cp*Rh[S2C2(B9H9)]}Ru(COD)(OCH3) (7b) and 3b were obtained. All complexes were fully characterized by their IR, H-1 NMR and elemental analyses. The molecular structures of 2a, 2b, 3b, 4a, 5a, and 7b have been determined by X-ray crystallography. Abstract:Reactions of dilithium salt of 1,1-bis-o-carborane with half-sandwich transition metal complexes [Cp*MCl2]2 (M = Ir, Rh) in THF at room temperature afforded the C,C-chelated mononuclear metal complexes Cp*M(C2B10H10)2 (M = Ir (1), Rh (2), Cp* = η5−C5Me5) in moderate yields, respectively. They represent the first examples of a new type of 16-electron “pseudo-aromatic” bis-o-carborane iridium and rhodium complexes. All products were fully characterized by elemental analysis and IR and NMR spectroscopy. The structure of complex 1 was further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract:The assembly of soluble, air- stable, supramolecular structures {( Zn- TPyP)[Cp* Ir{S2C2(B10H10)}](4)(THF)(2)}(+)(+) (2), {(Cu-TPyP)-[Cp*Ir{S2C2(B10H10)}](4)(THF)(2)} (3) and {(Zn-TPyP)[Cp*Ir-{S2C2(B10H10)}](2)(.)6(CHCl3)}(n) (4), based on metal-containing moieties [Cp* Ir{S2C2(B10H10)}] (1) bridged by nitrogen-based organic spacers, are described.
