Abstract:The light curve and images of comet Hale-Bopp (C/1995 OI) in September 1996 are studied. It is found that an outburst happened on 10-11 September 1996. The magnitude of the inner coma region increased by 2.1 and 1.4 mag on these two days, respectively. Two globular ejecta were found near the nucleus of the comet on 10-11 September 1996. By extrapolating backward from the ejecta, it is found that the initial time of the outburst was on 9 September 1996 (9.5 +/- 0.2 UT). The physical reason for this outburst is still uncertain. Abstract:This paper reports on the eruption of comet Hale-Bopp in September 1996. Two globular ejecta are observed near the nucleus of the comet on Sept. 10 and 11, 1996. We measured the projected velocity to be some 100 m/s. Subsequently the ejecta evolved into a pair of huge jets.

Abstract:Conventional narrowband photoelectric photometry of Comet Hale-Bopp (1995 O1) was obtained on 99 nights from mid-1995 to early-2000, yielding gas and dust production rates over an unprecedented range of time and distance. The appearance of Hale-Bopp presented a prime opportunity for active comet studies and its inherent brightness and orbital geometry allowed the characterization of its long-term activity. Throughout the apparition Hale-Bopp released, by far, more gas and dust than any other comet ever measured. As a very high dust-to-gas ratio object, dust production was successfully measured throughout the apparition, with dust consistently slightly red in color. All five gas species including OH and NH were detected just inside of 5 AU inbound, while C2 and C3 were detected to just past 5 AU outbound and CN was followed until nearly 7.7 AU. Heliocentric distance dependencies ranged between -1.2 to -2.7 in log-log space, with the extremes magnified by the large extrapolations in Haser model parameters at large distances. Hale-Bopp's enormous size and associated extremely high outgassing resulted in a much larger collisional zone, which in turn yielded outflow velocities more than 2x higher than ever previously measured at comparable distances. Even so, volatile composition remained within the "typical" classification, consistent with most Oort Cloud comets, and water production follows the expected curve based on a standard water vaporization model. However, seasonal effects provided evidence for inhomogeneities among the major source regions on the surface of the nucleus. Preliminary modeling of the nucleus and coma successfully matches this seasonal behavior.

Determination of the Ejection Velocities of Comet Hale-Bopp S Jets

Abstract:The wavelet analysis method is brought into use to process the charge coupled device (CCD) images of Comet Hale-Bopp, which were obtained with the 1.56 m telescope of Shanghai Astronomical Observatory. This method can eliminate the coma and show the features of jets. It is possible to measure the ejection velocities (EV) of the jets by comparing the distances between the cometary nucleus and the brightness center of the jets on different days. According to the reported rotation period of Comet Hale-Bopp, which is about 12 h, the average EV of the jets is determined to be (599 +/- 34) m/s based on 27 measurements. In addition, it is discovered that the velocity is different for each jet and for each different day, with a variation ranging from 200 to 900 m/s.
Continuous Monitoring of Comet Holmes from Before the 2007 Outburst

Abstract:The outburst and subsequent brightness evolution of Comet 17P/Holmes has been observed using the MMT Observatory's All-Sky Camera (Pickering 2006) on Mt. Hopkins near Tucson, Arizona, USA. The comet was picked up at the limiting visual magnitude of 5.5 on October 24.38 and tracked by the camera continuously until sunrise four hours later. During this time the comet brightened to visual magnitude 3.5. Comet Holmes was next observed just after sunset on October 25.23 at visual magnitude 2.5 where it remained approximately constant over the next three days. The comet then began to dim slowly and was followed into the early months of 2008 with periods of dense time coverage.

Abstract:Aims. We present secular multiwavelength broadband photometry, spanning over 93 days, performed at the Yaoan High Precision Telescope on comet 64P/Swift-Gehrels in its 2018–2019 apparition. Our aim is to study its dust activity, coma properties, and the accidentally discovered mini-outburst. Methods. We used aperture photometry to measure the Afρ value and correct the back-scattering effect based on phase angle. We deployed azimuthally averaged image enhancement methods to identify the coma morphology and the outburst. Secular color measurement was also conducted on the comet. Results. We identified a −0.5 mag mini-outburst around January 3, 2019, with coma morphology study showing an obvious dust jet feature strengthened during the outburst. The maximum A(0)fρ value of 64P/Swift-Gehrels recorded is 313 cm at the top of the fitted curve and 334 cm at the outburst event. Both volatile-driven pressure mechanisms and nonvolatile-driven mechanisms could be the major explanation for the outburst. We obtain a mean color B − V = 0.68 ± 0.03 and V − R = 0.08 ± 0.01. The B − V color is similar to the mean value for Jupiter Family comets, but the V − R color turns out to be bluest among all the recorded short-period comets. The cause of this anomaly remains unknown.
Narrowband Observations of Comet 46P/Wirtanen During Its Exceptional Apparition of 2018/19 I: Apparent Rotation Period and Outbursts

Abstract:We obtained broadband and narrowband images of the hyperactive comet 46P/Wirtanen on 33~nights during its 2018/2019 apparition, when the comet made an historic close approach to the Earth. With our extensive coverage, we investigated the temporal behavior of the comet on both seasonal and rotational timescales. CN observations were used to explore the coma morphology, revealing that there are two primary active areas that produce spiral structures. The direction of rotation of these structures changes from pre- to post-perihelion, indicating that the Earth crossed the comet's equatorial plane sometime around perihelion. We also used the CN images to create photometric lightcurves that consistently show two peaks in the activity, confirming the two source regions. We measured the nucleus' apparent rotation period at a number of epochs using both the morphology and the lightcurves. These results all show that the rotation period is continuously changing throughout our observation window, increasing from 8.98~hr in early November to 9.14~hr around perihelion and then decreasing again to 8.94~hr in February. Although the geometry changes rapidly around perihelion, the period changes cannot primarily be due to synodic effects. The repetition of structures in the coma, both within a night and from night-to-night, strongly suggests the nucleus is in a near-simple rotation state. We also detected two outbursts, one on December~12 and the other on January~28. Using apparent velocities of the ejecta in these events, 68$\pm$5~m~s$^{-1}$ and 162$\pm$15~m~s$^{-1}$, respectively, we derived start times of 2018~December~12 at 00:13~UT~$\pm$7~min and 2019~January~27 at 20:01~UT~$\pm$30~min.

Abstract:On 30.14 March 1997 we observed the EUV spectrum of the bright comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) at the time of its perihelion, using our EUVS sounding rocket telescope/spectrometer. The spectra reveal the presence H Ly beta, O+, and, most notably, Argon. Modelling of the retrieved Ar production rates indicates that comet Hale-Bopp is enriched in Ar relative to cosmogonic expectations. This in turn indicates that Hale-Bopp's deep interior has never been exposed to the 35-40 K temperatures necessary to deplete the comet's primordial argon supply.

The Highly Unusual Outgassing of Comet 103P/Hartley 2 from Narrowband Photometry and Imaging of the Coma

Abstract:We report on photometry and imaging of Comet 103P/Hartley 2 obtained at Lowell Observatory from 1991 through 2011. We acquired photoelectric photometry on two nights in 1991, four nights in 1997/98, and 13 nights in 2010/11. We observed a strong secular decrease in water and all other observed species production in 2010/11 from the 1991 and 1997/98 levels. We see evidence for a strong asymmetry with respect to perihelion in the production rates of our usual bandpasses, with peak production occurring ~10 days post-perihelion and production rates considerably higher post-perihelion. The composition was "typical", in agreement with the findings of other investigators. We obtained imaging on 39 nights from 2010 July until 2011 January. We find that, after accounting for their varying parentage and lifetimes, the C2 and C3 coma morphology resemble the CN morphology we reported previously. These species exhibited an hourglass shape in October and November, and the morphology changed with rotation and evolved over time. The OH and NH coma morphology showed hints of an hourglass shape near the nucleus, but was also enhanced in the anti-sunward hemisphere. This tailward brightness enhancement did not vary significantly with rotation and evolved with the viewing geometry. We conclude that all five gas species likely originate from the same source regions on the nucleus, but that OH and NH were derived from small grains of water and ammonia ice that survived long enough to be affected by radiation pressure and driven in the anti-sunward direction. We detected the faint, sunward facing dust jet reported by other authors, and did not detect a corresponding gas feature. This jet varied little during a night but exhibited some variations from night to night, suggesting it is located near the total angular momentum vector.

Major Outburst and Splitting of Long-Period Comet C/2015 ER61 (Pan-STARRS)

Abstract:In early April 2017, five weeks before passing through perihelion, the dust-poor comet C/2015 ER61 was observed to undergo a major outburst, during which its intrinsic brightness increased briefly by about 2 mag. Evidence is presented in this paper to suggest that the flare-up was in all likelihood a product of an event of nuclear fragmentation that gave birth to a companion nucleus, which was first detected more than nine weeks later, on June 11, and remained under observation for 19 days. The companion is found to have separated from the parent nucleus with a velocity of less than 1 m/s; subsequently it was subjected to a nongravitational deceleration of 14 units of 10^{-5} the Sun's gravitational acceleration. The companion's overall dimensions can from this value be estimated al less than one hundred meters across. Unlike the primary nucleus, the companion displayed considerable fluctuations in brightness on time scales spanning at least three orders of magnitude, from a fraction of one hour to weeks. The long temporal gap between the companion's birth and first detection appears to be a corollary of the brightness variability. Evidence from the light curve suggests that the companion became detectable only because of large amounts of debris that it started shedding as well as increased activity from area newly exposed by progressive fragmentation, the same process that also resulted in the companion's impending disintegration by the end of June of in early July.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The activity of Jupiter family comets, 60P/Tsuchinshan 2 and 62P/Tsuchinshan 1, is analysed by creating their Secular light curves (SLCs). We collected 850 observations in apparitions 1995, 2005, 2012, and 2018 for 60P/Tsuchinshan 2 and 471 observations in apparitions 1998, 2004, and 2017 for 62P/Tsuchinshan 1. We obtained the main activity parameters: turn-on distance (RON) and time (TON), turn-off distance (ROFF) and time (TOFF), photometric age (P-AGE), and time age (T-AGE). The results show that both comets could be classified as middle-age comets in early apparitions, due to P-AGE ≳30 comet yr, and their activity lasting for more than 300 d similar to those of comets 32P/Comas-Sola and 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. The orbital changes (decrease of perihelion distance) of comets 60P/Tsuchinshan 2 and 62P/Tsuchinshan 1 in recent apparitions enhanced their activity with different characteristics, which was proved by the increased brightness amplitude or space range of activity and the decreased P-AGE; meanwhile, they are entering the range of young comets, and are classified as Lazarus comets.
Interferometric mapping of the 3.3-mm continuum emission of comet 17P/Holmes after its 2007 outburst

Abstract:Context. Comet 17P/Holmes underwent a dramatic outburst in October 2007, caused by the sudden fragmentation of its nucleus and the production of a large quantity of grains scattering sunlight. Aims. We report on 90 GHz continuum observations carried out with the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer on 27.1 and 28.2 October 2007 UT, i.e., 4−5 days after the outburst. These observations probed the thermal radiation of large dust particles, and therefore provide the best constraints on the mass in the ejecta debris. Methods. The thermal emission of the debris was modelled and coupled to a time-dependent description of their expansion after the outburst. The analysis was performed in the Fourier plane. Visibilities were computed for the two observing dates and compared to the data to measure their velocity and mass. Optical data and 250-GHz continuum measurements published in the literature were used to further constrain the dust kinematics and size distribution. Results. Two distinct dust components in terms of kinematic properties are identified in the data. The large-velocity component, with typical velocities V0 of 50−100 m s-1 for 1 mm particles, displays a steep size distribution with a size index estimated to q = −3.7 (±0.1), assuming a minimum grain size of 0.1 μm. It corresponds to the fast expanding shell observed in optical images. The slowly-moving “core” component (V0 = 7−9 m s-1) detected near the nucleus has a size index |q| < 3.4 and contains a higher proportion of large particles than the shell. The dust mass in the core is in the range 0.1−1 that of the shell. Using optical constants pertaining to porous grains (50% porosity) made of astronomical silicates mixed with water ice (48% in mass), the total dust mass Mdust injected by the outburst is estimated to 4−14 × 1011 kg, corresponding to 3−9% the nucleus mass.

Abstract:Typical coma spectra of Comet Halley were obtained on 1985 December 25 and 1986 January 13 using the 1 metre telescope of the Yunnan Observatory. The nitrogen-baked Kodak plates showed a continuum with strong molecular bands in emission. The intensity ratios are found to be CN(4216A)C3(4052A) = 1.03, CN(4216A)C2(4365A) = 1.00.

Abstract:Comet Hale-Bopp was observed five times with ISOPHOT, the photometer on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). Each time broadband photometry was performed using 4 different detectors, 5 apertures and, 10 filters covering the range between 3.6 to 175 $\mu$m. Calibration measurements using the internal Fine Calibration Source were done together with each individual measurement. Background observations were performed with identical instrument settings at the same positions on the sky several days after the comet observations. The observation strategy and the initial data reduction steps are described in some detail and the resulting in-band power values of the Hale-Bopp observations and their uncertainties are derived. Initial reduction of these measurements was performed in 3 steps: (1) processing of raw data by removing instrumental and energetic particle effects, (2) averaging of the individual signals, and (3) determination of the detector responsivities and their uncertainties. The detector signal is determined by two different methods and the best value is chosen. At the present level of processing uncertainties range from 10% to a factor of 3 for the low power levels at short wavelengths. The in-band power levels at different wavelengths varied over 3 orders of magnitude.

Electromagnetic radiation outbursts from the collision of P/Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet with Jupiter

Abstract:The forthcoming collision by debris of P/Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet with Jupiter during the week of July 18, 1994 has generated considerable scientific and public interest. This collision may release an amount of energy ranging from 1025-1031 ergs in the Jovian atmosphere. Two possible phenomena associated with this event are described in this Letter to the Editor. The first one is the likely display of deformed Jovian magnetic field lines as the comet interacts with the Jovian magnetosphere. The second one is electromagnetic radiation outbursts during comet explosions over a wide frequency range from radio up to gamma ray emissions. If relativistic electrons with energies up to ~ 1000 MeV could be produced during comet explosions, then synchrotron radiations with frequencies from radio up to infrared range could be detectable. Hard X-rays and gamma rays could be produced by bremsstrahlung and inverse Compton processes. Since one cannot exclude the possible transient presence of relativistic electrons with Lorentz? factor ? 2 × 106, synchrotron radiation component might even be extended into gamma ray frequency range during intermittent short time intervals.
The composition and size distribution of the dust in the coma of comet Hale-Bopp

Abstract:We discuss the composition and size distribution of the dust in the coma of comet Hale-Bopp. We do this by fitting simultaneously the infrared emission spectrum measured by the infrared space observatory (ISO) and the measured degree of linear polarization of scattered light at various phase angles and 12 different wavelengths. The effects of particle shape on the modeled optical properties of the dust grains are taken into account. We constrain our fit by forcing the abundances of the major rock forming chemical elements to be solar. The infrared spectrum at long wavelengths reveals that large grains are needed in order to fit the spectral slope. The size and shape distribution we employ allows us to estimate the sizes of the crystalline silicates. The ratios of the strength of various forsterite features show that the crystalline silicate grains in Hale-Bopp must be submicron sized. We exclude the presence of large crystalline silicate grains in the coma. Because of this lack of large crystalline grains combined with the fact that we do need large amorphous grains to fit the emission spectrum at long wavelengths, we need only approximately 4% of crystalline silicates by mass. After correcting for possible hidden crystalline material included in large amorphous grains, our best estimate of the total mass fraction of crystalline material is approximately 7.5%, significantly lower than deduced in previous studies in which the typical derived crystallinity is 20-30%. The implications of this on the possible origin and evolution of the comet are discussed. The crystallinity we observe in Hale-Bopp is consistent with the production of crystalline silicates in the inner solar system by thermal annealing and subsequent radial mixing to the comet forming region.

The Unusual Apparition of Comet 252P/2000 G1 (LINEAR) and Comparison with Comet P/2016 BA14 (PanSTARRS)

Abstract:We imaged Comet 252P/2000 G1 (LINEAR) (hereafter 252P) with the Hubble Space Telescope and both 252P and P/2016 BA$_{14}$ (PanSTARRS) (hereafter BA$_{14}$) with the Discovery Channel Telescope in March and April 2016, surrounding its close encounter to Earth. The r'-band $Af\rho$ of 252P in a 0.2"-radius aperture were $16.8\pm0.3$ and $57\pm1$ cm on March 14 and April 4, respectively, and its gas production rates were: $Q$(OH) = $(5.8\pm0.1)\times10^{27}$ s$^{-1}$, and $Q$(CN) = $(1.25\pm0.01)\times10^{25}$ s$^{-1}$ on April 17. The r'-band upper limit $Af\rho$ of BA1$_{14}$ was $0.19\pm0.01$ cm in a 19.2"-radius aperture, and $Q$(CN) = $(1.4\pm0.1)10^{22}$ s$^{-1}$ on April 17, 2017. 252P shows a bright and narrow jet of a few hundred kilometers long in the sunward direction, changing its projected position angle in the sky with a periodicity consistent with 7.24 hours. However, its photometric lightcurve is consistent with a periodicity of 5.41 hours. We suggest that the nucleus of 252P is likely in a non-principal axis rotation. The nucleus radius of 252P is estimated to be about $0.3\pm0.03$ km, indicating an active fraction of 40% to >100% in its 2016 apparition. Evidence implies a possible cloud of slow-moving grains surrounding the nucleus. The activity level of 252P in the 2016 apparition increased by two orders of magnitude from its previous apparitions, making this apparition unusual. On the other hand, the activity level of BA14 appears to be at least three orders of magnitude lower than that of 252P, despite its ten times or larger surface area.

Secular Light Curve of 2P/Encke: A Comet Active At Aphelion

Abstract:We present the secular light curve of comet 2P/Encke in two phase spaces, the log plot, and the time plot. The main conclusions of this work are: a) The comet shows activity at perihelion and aphelion, caused by two different active areas: Source 1, close to the South pole, active at perihelion, and Source 2, at the North pole, centered at aphelion. b) More than 18 physical parameters are measured from the secular light curves, many of them new, and are listed in the individual plots of the comet. Specifically we find for Source 1 the location of the turn on and turn off points of activity, RON= -1.63+-0.03 AU, ROFF= +1.49+-0.20 AU, TON= -87+-5 d, TOFF= +94+-15 d, the time lag, LAG(q)= 6+-1 d, the total active time, TACTIVITY= 181+-16 d, and the amplitude of the secular light curve, ASEC(1,1) = 4.8+-0.1 mag. c) From this information the photometric age and the time-age defined in Ferrin (Icarus 178, 493-516, 2005a, and Icarus, 185, 523-543, 2006), can be calculated, and we find P-AGE=97+-8 comet years and T-AGE= 103+-9 comet years (cy). Thus comet 2P/Encke is an old comet entering the methuselah stage (100 cy < age). d) The activity at aphelion (Source 2), extends for TACTIVITY = 815+-30 d and the amplitude of the secular light curve is ASEC (1,Q) = 3.0+-0.2 mag. e) From a new phase diagram an absolute magnitude and phase coefficient for the nucleus are determined, and we find RNUC(1,1,0)= 15.05+-0.14, and betha= 0.066+-0.003. From this data we find a nucleus effective diameter DEFFE = 5.12(+2.5;-1.7) km. These values are not much different from previous determinations but exhibit smaller errors. Ice Chemistry Modeling of Active Phase Comets: Hale-Bopp

Abstract:We present a chemical kinetics model of the solid-phase chemical evolution of a comet, beginning with a long period of cold-storage in the Oort Cloud, followed by five orbits that bring the comet close to the Sun. The chemical model is based on an earlier treatment that considered only the cold-storage phase, and which was based on the interstellar ice chemical kinetics model MAGICKAL. The comet is treated as 25 chemically distinct layers. Updates to the previous model includes: (i) Time- and depth-dependent temperature profiles according to heliocentric distance; (ii) a rigorous treatment of back-diffusion for species capable of diffusing through the bulk-ice layers; (iii) adoption of recent improvements in the kinetic treatment of nondiffusive chemical reaction rates. Starting from an initially simple ice composition, interstellar UV photons drive a rapid chemistry in the upper micron of material, but diminished by absorption of the UV by the dust component. Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) drive a much slower chemistry in the deeper ices over the long cold-storage period down to 10 m. The first solar approach drives off the upper layers of ice material via thermal desorption and/or dissociation, bringing closer to the surface the deeper material that previously underwent long-term processing by GCRs. Subsequent orbits are more uniform in their chemical behavior. Loss of molecular material leads to concentration of the dust in the upper layers. Substantial quantities of complex organic molecules are formed in the upper 10 m during the cold storage phase, with some of this material released during solar approach; however, their abundances with respect to water appear too low to account for the observed gas-phase values for comet Hale-Bopp, indicating that the majority of complex molecular material observed, at least in comet Hale-Bopp, is an inheritance of primordial material.
