A Comparison of the Points of Concern in the Equity of College Admission Examinations in China and America

Abstract:Through discussing differences in points of concern related to the equity of college admission examinations between China and United States of America by comparing reports in China Daily and The New York Times,it is showed that both of these major newspapers evinced concern by carrying about 90 relevant reports in the past decade.However, there appeared to be significant differences in points of concern between the two countries.The focus in the United States was on aspects of the contents of the examination(SAT),the disabled,ethnic minorities,gender,and differences in family backgrounds,with an emphasis on the college entrance examination and equity of educational process and outcomes.In China,attention was concentrated on the examination qualifications of migrant workers' children,regional differences,the allocation of college admission quotas,and cheating on examinations,with an emphasis on the national college entrance examination and equal educational opportunities.However,in terms of the expectations of entrance examination reform,the two countries have a high degree of agreement,and both are tending to reduce the importance of the examination scores in the admission process.The findings not only highlight different concerns regarding educational equality because of their different backgrounds and different levels of development,but also reveal a shared concern about entrance examination reform in the two countries.
