Exploring the impact of Fe3+ ions on TiO2 nanostructures to enhance photocatalytic efficiency

Abstract:In this study, TiO 2 nanoparticles were synthesized with varying Fe dopant concentrations using the solvothermal method. The impact of Fe 3+ dopant concentration on structural stability, optical properties, and photocatalytic activity was investigated. X-ray diffraction confirmed Fe 3+ ion doping without altering the TiO 2 crystal structure, with a decrease in crystallite size. FTIR analysis was used to verify the characteristic functional groups of Fe and TiO 2 phases. The average grain size ranged from 20 to 30 nm, and the homogeneous distribution of iron atoms in the TiO 2 matrix was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Optical studies showed an increased absorption peak, redshift, and a reduced energy gap from 3.2 to 2.9 eV with Fe addition, indicating bandgap narrowing. Saturation magnetization increased with Fe doping, attributed to the presence of Fe in the TiO 2 host lattice matrix. UV–Vis spectroscopy revealed enhanced dye degradation with increasing Fe dopant concentration, indicating improved photocatalytic activity due to reduced electron–hole pair recombination. These findings emphasize the significant influence of Fe 3+ ions on TiO 2 nanostructures, enhancing their photocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution.
