Abstract:The complex [Cu-2(mu -cis-oxpn)(phen)(NO3)(2)], where oxpn = N,N ' -bis(3-aminopropyl) oxamidato and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, has been synthesized and its crystal structure determined by X-ray methods. The structure consists of binuclear copper (II) molecules in which the Cu (II) atoms are bridged by oxamidato group in the cis conformation, the Cu-Cu distance being 5.205(10) Angstrom. The coordination geometry around Cu (II) atoms is square pyramidal; the apex is occupied by a more weakly bonded O atom from a nitrate group. Electron delocalization is observed in the bridging oxamide moiety. The co-planarity of bridge ligand and basal plane around Cu (II) atoms may benefit spin super-exchange between two Cu (II) atoms. IR spectra of the binuclear complex are discussed.

Abstract:The title complex, Cu-2(C10H2O8)(C3H4N2)(6)(H2O)(4) . 4H(2)O, consists of polymeric copper(II) complex anions and discrete copper(II) complex cations. Benzenetetracarboxyl anions bridge copper(II) atoms coordinated to water and imidazole groups to form the anionic polymeric chains along the a axis, while discrete copper(II) complex cations involving four imidazole and two water ligands are packed between parallel polymeric anionic chains, an extensive H-bonding network linking complex cations and anions.

Abstract:A series of five-coordinated 2,6-bis(imino)pyridyl Cu(II) complexes, [2,6-(ArN=CMe)(2)C(5)H(3)N-CuCl(2)center dot nCH(3)CN] (Ar = 4-MeC(6)H(4), n = 0.5, Cu1; Ar = 2,6-Et(2)C(6)H(3), n = 1, Cu2; Ar = 2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2), n = 1, Cu3; Ar = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3), n = 0, Cu4; Ar = 2-MeC(6)H(4), n = 1, Cu5), were synthesized in acetonitrile by reactions of the corresponding bis(imino)pyridine ligands with CuCl(2)center dot 2H(2)O, respectively. The structures of five complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In all complexes, the metal center is tridentately chelated by ligand and further coordinated by two chlorine atoms, resulting in distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry for Cu1, Cu3, Cu4, and Cu5, respectively, and approximately square-pyramidal geometry for Cu2. At 298 K in dichloromethane solution, all complexes exhibit blue-green luminescent emissions at about 478-499 nm, which could be attributed to ligand-centered pi* -> pi transitions. However, fluorescent emission of complexes Cu1-Cu5 is significantly weaker than those of ligands, which could be attributed to fluorophore-quencher interactions via paramagnetic Cu(II) center. Abstract:A new asymmetrical Schiff base ligand, (E)-4-chloro-2-{[(2,6-dimethylphenyl)amino] methyl}phenol(HL), and its mononuclear Cu(II) complex have been synthesized. The molecular structures and spectroscopic properties of the ligand and its complex were experimentally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, FT-IR, NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques. The analysis confirmed that the Cu atom in complex is generally four-coordinated by one imino N and one phenolic O atoms of a Schiff-base ligand adopting a trans-configuration of N2O2 donor atoms around the metal ion, forming a tetrahedral geometry. Density functional calculation is being carried out on both HL and copper(II) complex to investigate changes in structural parameters, energies of the HOMO and LUMO. The results demonstrated that the HOMO and LUMO were effectively separated with the benzene ring of 2,6-dimethylbenzenamine as a donor unit and the benzene ring of 5-chlorosalicylaldehyde as an acceptor unit. The effective HOMO-LUMO separation helps to induce intramolecular charge transfer from the HOMO to the LUMO. The HOMO-LUMO energy gap become smaller when the Schiff base ligand coordinated with Cu(II) ion, most likely due to the interaction of the d-orbitals of copper(II) with the HOMO and/or LUMO of the ligand. These theoretical calculations supported the experimentally observed results.The biological assay revealed that both Schiff base and the complex have different antimicrobial activity. The complex has the MIC value of 0.0781 mmol·L-1 against Escherichia coli.

Abstract:Four novel Cu(I) complexes, [Cu(o-PYO)(PPh3)(2)]BF4 (1), [Cu(o-PYO)(DPEphos)]BF4 (2), [Cu-2(o-PYO)(PPh3)(3)(CH3CN)](BF4)(2) (3) and [Cu-2(o-PYO)(DPEphos)2](BF4)(2) (4) (o-PYO = 2,5-bis(pyridy1)-1,3,4-oxadiazole, PPh3 = triphenylphosphine, DPEphos = bis(2-(diphenylphosphanyl)phenyl)ether), have been synthesized and characterized by H-1 NMR, elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The central cuprous ions in all complexes are surrounded by N and P atoms to form a distorted tetrahedral geometry, although one of the cuprous ions in complex 3 is coordinated by a PPh3 and an acetonitrile molecule due to the steric hindrance and weak coordination ability from monodentate PPh3 ligand. The UV-vis absorption spectra in CH2Cl2 show the characteristic metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorption bands in the region of 360-480 nm. Four Cu(I) complexes exhibit yellow to orange-red phosphorescence with the emission maximum at 572, 577, 562 and 597 nm, respectively in the solid state.

Abstract:The Cu(II) complex with the ligand 2,9-bis(n-2',5'-diazaheptanyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (L) has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n with a = 12.549(4), b = 13.544(4), c = 16.767(5) Angstrom, beta = 107.179(5)degrees, C22H32Cl2N6CuO8, M-r = 642.98, V = 2722.5(13) Angstrom(3), Z = 4, D-c = 1.569 g/cm(3), mu = 1.056 mm(-1), F(000) = 1332, the final R = 0.0733 and wR = 0.1581. The X-ray analysis revealed that the Cu(II) ion is coordinated by six nitrogen atoms of the ligand, in which two nitrogen from phenanthroline and another two from the imine groups near phenanthroline are in the equatorial plane while the two from imine groups at the end of both arms in the axial positions. The coordination geometry can be described as a compressed octahedron.

Abstract:AbstractA new complex, [Cu2(μ2-Cl)2(IP)2Cl2] · 4H2O (IP = imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenathroline), was synthesised and characterised by elemental analysis, thermal analysis, IR spectra, and X-ray crystallography. The results showed that the complex crystallises in the monoclinic space group P$$\bar 1$$; a = 7.880 (2) Å, b = 9.227(2) Å, c = 10.694(2) Å; α = 97.788(4)°, β = 100.637(4)°, γ = 95.841(3)°; V = 750.7(3) Å3, and Z = 1. The complex is further stabilised by H-bonds and a π-π stacking interaction between the pyridine and benzene rings of two neighbouring molecules with the centroid.centroid distance of 3.498(3) Å, leading to a 3D supramolecular architecture. Thermal decomposition procedure of the complex explored by TG-DTG has three stages, and the final product is Cu in residual rate of 16.18 % (calculated to be 16.26 %).

Abstract:A series of cobalt complexes bearing 2,6-bis (imino) phenoxy ligands, LCoCl2 [L = 2,6-(ArNCH)(2)CH3C6H2OH] was synthesized by the reaction of the ligand 2,6-bis(imino) phenol with the equivalent mole of cobalt dichloride, and these complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, H-1 NMR, MS and ER spectra. The structure of one complex was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract:N,N'-bis(L-phenylalanyl)ethane-1,2-diamine was prepared by using L-phenylalanine and ethanediamine. The synthetic process was improved. The ligand reacted with copper dichloride to form the chiral coordination compound. The single crystal was obtained in methanol solution. It is shown by X-ray structural studies that the crystal belongs to the tetragonal system and the space group is I4. The lattice parameters are as follows: a = 2.5044(4) nm, b = 2.5044(4) nm, c = 0.8707(3) nm, V=5. 461(2) nm(3), D-c = 1.365 g/ cm(3), Z = 8. In the structure of the complex, the Cu(II) cation is coordinated by two nitrogen atoms, two oxygen atoms and one chlorine atom.

Abstract:Two new copper(I) complexes [Cu(L1)2]PF6 (L1=4-diphenylphosphino-1,5-naphthyridine, 1) and [Cu(L2)2]PF6 (L2=4-diphenylphosphino-8-methyl-1,5-naphthyridine, 2), have been prepared and characterized. In each of them, the coordinate geometry of Cu atom is a distorted square planar configuration with bond distances and angles in the normal range. Moreover, compound 2 features one-dimensional zigzag chains which are cross-linked by the metal complex cations and PF6− anions through hydrogen bonding interactions. The HOMO–LUMO energy gaps of 1–2 estimated by the cyclic voltammetry (CV) show values in the order of 1>2. Both 1 and 2 show low-energy bands ranging from 360 to 430nm and available florescence in the solid state at room temperature with λmax=532–541nm. The UV–vis absorption spectra of 1–2 show obvious red-shifts compared with those of the corresponding quinoline containing Cu(I) complexes [Cu(QN)2]PF6 (QN=8-diphenylphosphino quinoline), exhibiting the HOMO–LUMO energy gaps of 1–2 should be narrower than that of [Cu(QN)2]PF6.

Abstract:Two copper(II) complexes of the tridentate Schiff-base ligands (L-1)(-) and (L-2)(-), [CuL1(mu-Br)](infinity) (1) and [CuL2(mu(1,3)-N-3)](infinity) (2), have been synthesized and characterized. The ligands [(L-1)(-) and (L-2)(-) are the deprotonated forms of 2-[(2-morpholin-4-ylethylimino)methyl]phenol (HL1) and 2-[(2-piperidin-1-ylethylimino)methyl]phenol (HL2), respectively]. X-Ray structure determinations carried out on complexes 1 and 2 reveal that both complexes are mono(mu-bromo)-bridged (for 1) or mono(mu(1,3)-azido)-bridged (for 2) square pyramidal copper(II) one-dimensional chain polymeric complexes.

Abstract:The five-coordinate copper(II) complex [(3,3'-trimethylenedinitrilo)bis(2-butanone oximato)]copper(II) bromide (CuHLBr) has been prepared and its crystal structure has been determined. The complex has a square-pyramidal structure with the copper displaced 0.43 angstrom out of the basal nitrogen plane. The Cu-Br distance is 2.955 angstrom. The differences in the structures of the copper(II) and copper(I) complexes is discussed. Covalency of the coordinate bond for the title complex is also discussed based on ESR spectra.

Abstract:A new binuclear copper(II) complex, [Cu2Phen2Cl4] (Phen=1,10-phenanthroline), has been synthesized and characterized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction results suggest that this complex structure belongs to monoclinic crystal system, Cc (no. 9) with the cell dimensions: a=9.849(2)Å, b=17.833(4)Å, c=13.374(3)Å, β=106.61(3)°, V=2251.0(8)Å3, Dc=1.8569 Mgm−3, F(000)=1256.0, Z=4. One Cu(II) central atom situated in a distorted square planar geometry is four-coordinated. The other situated in a distorted square pyramidal geometry is five-coordinated. Only one bridging Cl atom exists in the complex. Spectroscopic studies, including electronic absorption and fluorescence spectra, conductivity measurements and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) of fluorescence excitation–emission three-way data array, were carried out on the DNA binding behavior of the complex. All the results suggested that the breakage of DNA secondary structure took place at low molar ratio of complex to DNA (0.3 at most) and intercalation into the base pair of DNA took place at high molar ratio. Additionally, the equilibrium concentration of EB–DNA and EB (EB: ethidium bromide) could be directly obtained by PARAFAC algorithm, proved to be a convincing method for studying the interaction of complexes with DNA.

Abstract:An antiferromagnetic complex based on coppe(II) and chiral Schiff-base ligand (R)-1-((1-hydroxybutan-2-ylimino)methyl)naphthalen-2-ol (H2L) with formula of (Cu4L4) (CH3CN) was synthesized and structurally characterized. Single-crystal structure shows that the complex consists of an inorganic core formed by four Cu(II) ions and four oxygen atoms from four ligands respectively. Magnetic measurements show that a weak antiferromagnetic coupling occurs in the complex.

Abstract:A new mononuclear Cu(II) complex, [Cu(L)] (H2L = 4,4',6,6'-tetrabromo-2,2'-[ethylenedioxybis(nitrilomethylidyne)]diphenol), has been synthesized and structurally characterized. X-ray crystal structure of the complex reveals that the Cu(II) ion is four-coordinated by two oxygen atoms and two nitrogen atoms from L2- unit. Crystallographic data: monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n with a = 14.076(2), b = 6.9801(14), c = 19.858 (2) angstrom, beta = 107.613(2)degrees, C16H10Br4CuN2O4, M-r = 677.44, V = 1859.6(5) angstrom(3), D-c = 2.420 g/cm(3), mu = 9.796 mm(-1), F(000) = 1284, Z = 4, the final R = 0.0516 and wR = 0.0938 for 1879 observed reflections with I > 2 sigma(I). The dihedral angel between the two coordination planes of Cu(1)-N(2)-O(4) and Cu(1)-N(1)-O(3)) is 30.08(6)degrees.

Abstract:A novel linear trinuclear copper(II) complex bridged by phenoxy and benzyloxy oxygen atoms ([Cu3L2](ClO4)2 · (CH3CN)2, L = C11H13BrN2O2 2−) was synthesized and the crystal structure of the complex was determined by X-ray diffraction technique. The crystal structure of the complex contains a linear trinuclear array of copper(II) ions in which the central copper(II) ion is in an octahedron coordination sphere and lies on an inversion center of the molecule, the terminal ones are in an identical square pyramid structure. Variable-temperature magnetic data indicate that the complex displays a strong antiferromagnetic coupling with J = −270(8) cm−1 between the metal ions.

Abstract:A mixed-ligand copper(II) complex [Cu-2 (phen)(2) (HL1)(2)](ClO4)(2) (1) was synthesized. X-ray analyses reveal that I has a bis (mu(2)-phenoxo) -bridged dicopper (II) structure. 2D hydrogen-bonded network is formed utilizing the N-H, O-H and C-H groups of the (HL1)- ligands (H2L1 = N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)ethanolamine), the C-H groups of the phenanthrolines and the perchlorate anions. Variable temperature magnetic properties of I have shown comparatively weak antiferromagnetic interactions with respect to the bridge angles, which have been ascribed to the unfavorable overlaps of the magnetic orbitals for the highly distorted copper coordination polyhedra and the pyramidal distortions at the phenoxo oxygen atoms.
