Abstract:Whereas chain aggregation commonly quenches light emission of conjugated polymers, we here report a phenomenon of aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE): luminescence of polyacetylenes is dramatically boosted by aggregate formation. Upon photoexcitation, poly(1-phenyl-1-alkyne)s and poly(diphenylacetylene)s emit blue and green lights, respectively, in dilute THF solutions. The polymers become more emissive when their chains are induced to aggregate by adding water into their THF solutions. The polymer emissions are also enhanced by increasing concentration and decreasing temperature. Lifetime measurements reveal that the excited species of the polymers become longer-lived in the aggregates. Conformational simulations suggest that the polymer chains contain n = 3 repeat units that facilitate the formation of intramolecular excimers. The AIEE effects of the polymers are rationalized to be caused by the restrictions of their intramolecular rotations by the aggregate formation.

Abstract:We report the photophysics and fluorescence quenching of a series of monodisperse, anionic pi-conjugated oligomers that are molecularly dissolved in aqueous solution. These structurally well-defined oligomers feature oligo(phenylene ethynylene) backbones with two -CH2COO- units on each repeat unit, with overall lengths of 5, 7, and 9 repeats. The ionic oligomers display a structured fluorescence band with high quantum efficiency in water, in contrast to the low fluorescence quantum efficiency and pronounced aggregation displayed by structurally, similar oligomeric and polymeric (phenylene ethynylene) conjugated polyelectrolytes studied previously. Stern-Volmer (SV) fluorescence quenching studies using cationic charge- and energy-transfer quenchers reveal that all of the oligomers give rise to SV quenching constants (K-sv) in excess of 10(6) M-1, with values increasing with oligomer length, consistent with the amplified quenching effect The amplified quenching effect is proposed to occur due to the formation of comparatively small oligomer aggregates. Abstract:Three novel fluorene-containing poly(arylene ethynylene)s with amino-functionalized side groups were synthesized through the Sonogashira reaction. They were poly {9,9-bis[6'-(NN-diethylamino)hexyl]-2,7-fluorenylene ethynylene}-alt-co-{2,5-bis[3'-(N,N-diethylamino)-1'-oxapropyl]-1,4-phenylene} (P1), poly{9,9-bis[6'-(NN-diethylamino)hexyl]-2,7-fluorenylene ethynylene} (P2), and poly({9,9-bis[6'-(N,N-diethylamino) hexyl]-2,7-fluorenylene ethynylene}-alt-co-(1,4-phenylene)) (P3). Through the post-quaternization treatment of P1-P3 with methyl iodide, we obtained their cationic water-soluble conjugated polyelectrolytes (WSCPs): P1'-P3'. The water solubility was gradually improved from P3' to P1' with increasing contents of hydrophilic side chains. After examining the ultraviolet-visible absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra, fluorescence lifetimes, and dynamic light scattering data, we propose that with the reduction of the water solubility from P1' to P3', they exhibited a gradually increased degree of aggregation in H2O. The PL quantum yields of P1'-P3' in H2O displayed a decreasing tendency consistent with the increased degree of aggregation, suggesting that the pronounced degree of aggregation was an important reason for the low PL quantum yields of WSCPs in H2O. Two structurally analogous water-soluble trimers of P2' and P3', model compounds 2,7-bis(9",9"-bis{6"'-[(N,N-diethyl)-N-methylammonium] hexyl}-2"-fluorenylethynyl)-9,9-bis{(6'-[(N,N-diethyl)-N-methylammonium]hexyl}fluorene hexaiodide and 1,4-bis(9',9'-bis{(6"-[(NN-diethyl)-N-methylammonium]hexyl}-2'-fluorenylethynyl)benzene tetraiodide, were synthesized. The amplified fluorescence quenching of these WSCPs by Fe(CN)(6)(4-) in H2O was studied by comparison with a corresponding analogous trimer. Conjugated polyelectrolytes: Amplified quenching, self -assembly and sensor applications

Abstract:The research presented in this dissertation is focused on the photophysical characterization of several conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs), including a cationic poly(para-phenylene) (PPP-NEt3 +) which has alkyl ammonium side chains, anionic poly(phenylene ethynylene) sulfonate PPE-SO3 poly(meta-para-phenylene ethynylene) sulfonate mPPE-SO3 and poly(meta-phenylene ethynylene) carboxylate mPPE-CO2 Extensive studies were conducted on the fluorescence quenching behavior of these CPEs by different mechanisms. All of these CPEs show amplified quenching behavior compared to corresponding small model molecules, and the amplification is usually about 103 to 104-fold. It was found that polymer concentration, solvent, surfactant, and quencher property, all affect the quenching efficiency. PPP-NEt3+ was applied as a potential fluorescence sensor to detect biological molecule avidin using the Quencher-tether-ligand method and nM protein was successfully detected using this strategy. Steady state and ultrafast time resolved fluorescence were carried out to study the energy transfer quenching between PPE-SO3 and a cyanine dye. PPE-SO3 induced cyanine dyes aggregation was observed. PPE-SO3 forms a face-to-face inter-molecular pi-stacking, while both mPPE-SO3 and mPPE-CO2 show a solvent-driven intra-molecular pi-stacking to form a helical conformation, which is further confirmed by circular dichroism spectroscopy. Helical polymer mPPE-SO3 and mPPECO2 have the similar properties with DNA polymer, specifically, they are all polyanions and they all form a helical conformation in aqueous solution. The interaction between some well-known DNA intercalators and helical polymers was investigated. Hypochromic effect is seen for different intercalators, such as aminomethyl anthracene and Ru(bpy) 2(dppz)2+, where dppz = dipyridophenazine. In addition, the fluorescence "turn-on" effect was observed when Ru(bpy) 2(dppz)2+ interacts with helical polymers in aqueous solution, resulting from the protection of dppz ligand in pi-pi stacking of helical polymers. Helical polymer mediated photo-induced electron transfer quenching of Ru complexes was studied and compared to DNA and micelle. The synthetic polymer behaves in the similar way as DNA, characterized by a static quenching when the quencher intercalates binding to the helical polymer. Abstract:A study of the synthesis. photophysical behavior and self-assembly of a series of symmetrical cationic oligophenylene ethynylenes is reported. Aqueous solutions of all these compounds exhibit strong and structured absorption in the ultraviolet (maxima near 305 nm and 355 nm) with a broad fluorescence in the range 370-600 nm. While all of these compounds show strong fluorescence in methanol, the fluorescence yields in water are variable and substituent dependent. Transient absorption, presumably attributable to a triplet is found for all of the oligomers studied thus far. All of the compounds having a net positive charge exhibit strong complex formation when they are added to aqueous solutions containing the anionic biopolymer carboxymethylcellulose. The complexes are characterized by a pronounced red shift in the oligomer absorption spectrum and a red shifted and generally intense fluorescence. We attribute the spectral shifts due to the formation of "J-dimers" in each case. The results of this preliminary study suggest that these compounds may be useful in sensing due to their strong tendency to associate with anionic biomacromolecules. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Two tetraphenylethene (TPE) modified perylenebisimides (PBIs) were synthesized through linking the TPE moieties to the PBI core at the imide positions. Theoretical calculations predict that, in both of the mono-TPE and di-TPE substituted derivatives (i.e. TPE-N-PBI and DTPE-N-PBI), the TPE and PBI units are orthogonal to each other, and thus have no electronic conjugation. Thus the two compounds are TPE-PBI dyads rather than TPE-PBI conjugates. This property is supported by absorption and emission spectral features. In solution, aggregate and solid film, the fluorescence from both TPE and PBI subunits is evidently quenched. The underlying mechanism is the photo-induced charge transfer between the electron donor TPE and electron acceptor PBI subunits. In a highly polar tetrahydrofuran-water mixture with a large fraction of water, TPE-N-PBI can form H-aggregates. In low polar hydrophobic dichloromethane-hexane mixtures, due to the bulky size and rigidity of the TPE subunit, the dyad molecules cannot take a parallel alignment to form classical J- or H-aggregates, but have to exist in a large offset angle. Consequently, X-aggregates are formed, which was confirmed by the absorption features, morphological observations and comparative investigation of the reference compound.

Abstract:Three series of cationic oligo p-phenyleneethynylenes (OPEs) have been synthesized to study their structure-property relationships and gain insights into the transition from molecular to macromolecular properties. The; absorbance maxima and molar extinction coefficients in all three sets increase with increasing number of repeat units; however, the increase in lambda(max) between the oligomers having 2 and 3 repeat units is very small, and the oligomer having 3 repeat units shows virtually the same spectra as a p-phenyleneethynylene polymer having 49 repeat units. A computational study of the oligomers using density functional theory calculations indicates that while the simplest oligomers (OPE-1) are fully conjugated, the larger oligomers are nonplanar and the limiting "segment chromophore may be confined to a near-planar segment extending over three or four phenyl rings. Several of the OPEs self-assemble on anionic "scaffolds", with pronounced changes in absorption and fluorescence. Both experimental and computational results suggest that the planarization of discrete conjugated segments along the phenylene-ethynylene backbone is predominantly responsible for the photophysical characteristics of the assemblies formed from the larger oligomers. The striking differences in fluorescence between methanol and water are attributed to reversible nucleophilic attack of structured interfacial water on the excited singlet state.

Abstract:Phenylacetylene and 1-pentyne derivates containing aminated tetraphenylethene (TPE) units 1 and 2 are synthesized. The TPE-functionalized luminogens are nonemissive in dilute solutions but luminescent as solid aggregates, Showing H novel behavior of aggregation-induced emission (AIE). The monomers are polymerized to their corresponding polymers P1 and P2 with an E conformation by organorhodium catalysts, although Rh-catalyzed polymerizations normally yield Z-rich polyacetylenes. Whereas P1 fluoresces faintly in THF, its light emission is enhanced by aggregation inaqueous media, exhibiting an aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) effect. Oil the other hand, P2 is AIE active: the emission of its nanoaggregates Suspended in 90% aqueous mixture is similar to 57-fold stronger than that Of its Solution in THF. A novel superamplification effect is observed in the emission quenching of P2 nanoaggregates by picric acid (PA): the quenching constant (K-SV) is nonlinearly increased with the quencher concentration and reaches a very high value in the high [PA] region (K-SV similar to 350000 M-1). P1 and P2 are transformed to conjugated polyelectrolytes P1(+) and P2+ via ionization by hydrochloric acid. P1+ readily hybridizes with carbon nanotubes, affording functionalized P1+/nanotube hybrids with good water miscibility. Emission of P2+ in aqueous buffer is boosted when it binds to bovine serum albumin (BSA), allowing the polymer to work as a sensitive bioprobe for BSA quantitation at ultralow protein concentration (0-0.6 ppm).

Abstract:A water-soluble conjugated polymer was developed that displays significant fluorescence quenching (25% quenching of polymer's fluorescence at quencher concentrations of 500 nM) and forms well-defined multilayer structures via electrostatic deposition. The polymer contains alternating 2,5-thienyl- and 2,5-bis[2-(N,N-diethylamine)-1-oxapropyl]-substituted 1,4-phenylene units formed by a Stille reaction protocol. Poly({2,5-bis[2-(N,N-diethylamino)-1-oxapropyl]-1,4-phenylene}-alt-2,5-thienylene) (PPT-NEt2) was synthesized in 80% yield from 2,5-bis(trimethylstannyl)thiophene and the reactive diiodinated species 2,5-bis(3-[N,N-diethylamino]-1-oxapropyl)-1,4-diiodobenzene. The neutral polymer was soluble in THF, chloroform, and 1 M HCl (aq). A number-average molecular weight of 5300 g mol-1 (ca. 40 rings) was measured by GPC (relative to polystyrene standards). PPT-NEt2 is easily converted to the water-soluble polymer, poly{2,5-bis[2-(N,N,N-triethylammonium)-1-oxapropyl]-1,4-phenylene-alt-2,5-thienylene} dibromide (PPT-NEt3+), by quaternization with bromoethane. The polymer's electronic absorption is dependent on quaternization with absorption/emission wavelength maxima (λmax) corresponding to 460/519 nm for the neutral polymer and 411/495 nm for the quaternized version in the appropriate solvent. Well-defined, thin multilayer films of PPT-NEt3+, alternating with poly(acrylic acid)[PAA] or poly(styrene sulfonic acid)[PSS], were deposited via electrostatic deposition onto indium tin oxide coated glass. Polymer light-emitting diodes prepared from PPT-NEt3+/PSS exhibited the best results with a λmax of absorption and emission equal to 450 and 558 nm, respectively, external quantum efficiency of 0.017%, and light output of 110 nW.

Abstract:AbstractA meta-linked anionic conjugated polyelectrolyte m-PPYPE-SO3Na was synthesized and characterized by UV-vis, FT-IR, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. It is brown solid readily soluble in water and methanol. The UV-vis absorption spectra of the polymer show strong absorption bands, which correspond to the π-π* transition of π-conjugated segments. Fluorescence spectra in different solvents show that this kind of polymer has solvent-dependency. It was found that the existence of polymer-type surfactant significantly increased the intensity of fluorescence of the polymer. The fluorescence of the polymer in water solution could be effectively quenched by methyl viologen. Linear fit of the quenching plots affords Stern-Volmer constants (Ksv) of 5.65×105M-1 for intrinsic fluorescence emission of the polymer m-PPYPE-SO3Na and this revealed its good fluorescence sensitivity.

Abstract:We report the optical properties of tetraphenylethene (TPE) and other TPE derivatives functionalised with an octyl group (TPE-OCT) and polyethyleneglycol group (TPE-PEG) in the side chain. We compared TPE-OCT and TPE-PEG with TPE in both organic solvents and under aqueous conditions. All materials exhibit aggregation-induced emission, however, uncommonly, TPE-PEG seems to aggregate in aqueous solution with enhanced photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE) relative to that in organic solvents. All three materials can be photo-oxidised in solution to their diphenylphenanthrene derivative by irradiation with UV light (at both approximate to 1 and approximate to 5 mW?cm-2), with a subsequent enhancement in PL efficiency. The electron-donating ether group increases the rate of oxidation relative to bare TPE and also photo-oxidation was shown to be solvent and concentration dependent. Finally, photo-oxidation was also demonstrated in the aggregate state.

Abstract:A new series of poly(p-phenylenebutadiynylene)s has been synthesized with unique polymer structural features. In these systems each of the p-phenylene units in the conjugated backbone is the core of a rigid three-dimensional iptycene scaffold. The fluorescence quenching properties of these polymers in response to a series of electron-deficient aromatic compounds have been investigated in both solution and the solid state. It was found that in solution these polymers displayed higher quenching sensitivity toward studied quenchers compared to a more open-structure iptycene-containing poly(p-phenyleneethynylene). The quenching behaviors of the conjugated polymer were shown to be strongly influenced by the configuration of the incorporated iptycences. The thin films investigations revealed differences in both the fluorescence quenching and the recovery processes. Distinct behaviors indicated that the fluorescence quenching in the solid state is dictated by different factors than those in solution. Our results further suggest that poly(p-phenylenebutadiynylene)s containing large iptycene scaffolds that introduce porosity have the ability to efficiently sequester the quencher molecules within thin films as these materials display slow fluorescence recoveries.

Abstract:Three cationic PPEs P1 '-P3 ' were obtained through quaternization of their neutral polymers, of which all side chains were respectively featured with a tertiary amino group (P1), an alternative tertiary amino and tri(ethylene glycol)methyl ether group (P2), and an alternative tertiary amino and dodecyloxy group (P3). P1 ' showed intrinsic water-solubility although its quaternization degree was only 45%. Slightly blue-shifted UV-vis absorption maxima in an acidic environment (maximal Delta lambda(max) approximate to 3 nm) and obvious red-shifted absorption (maximal Delta lambda(max) approximate to 30 nm) and emission maxima (maximal Delta lambda(max) approximate to 20 nm) in an alkaline environment at pH < 13 are explained in terms of pH-induced planarization of the conjugated backbone. After the pH was increased to 14, a new absorption (lambda(max) approximate to 478 nm) and emission (lambda(max) approximate to 495 nm) peak appeared in the redder region and the fluorescence intensity further dramatically decreased, implying the occurrence of the conformational change from the planarization of conjugated backbone to the interchain aggregation. The fluorescence enhancement of P1 ' in an acidic environment and the fluorescence decrease of P1 ' in an alkaline environment are attributed to the pH-influenced quenching ability of the nonbonding electron pair on the nitrogen atom, which belongs to the unquaternized tertiary amino group on the side chain, and the interchain aggregation. Such pH-influenced fluorescence intensity can be efficiently buffered by adding salts at pH < 10. Although adding salts in a neutral environment only creates the planarization of PPE conjugated backbone, adding salts in an alkaline environment significantly promotes the formation of interchain aggregation. Amplified quenching of P1 ' by anionic quencher Fe(CN)(6)(4-) was observed and its K-sv increased significantly after adding salts or increasing pH to 14, for example from K-sv = 9.6 x 10(5) M-1 at pH = 7 to 7.7 x 10(6) M-1 at pH = 10 when [NaCl] = 0.1 M, due to the formation of elongated pi-conjugation.

Green light-emitting cationic polymers, poly{2,5-bis(4'-decyloxyphenyl)-1,4-phenylenevinylene-alt-2,5-bis[4'-2-(N,N,N-triethylammonium)ethoxyphenyl]-1,4-phenylenevinylene} dibromide (P2') and poly(2,5-bis{4'-2-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxylethoxyphenyl}-1,4-phenylenevinylene-alt-2,5-bis[4'-2-(N,N,N-triethylammonium)ethoxyphenyl]-1,4-phen-ylenevinylene) dibromide (PT), were prepared from the neutral polymers P2 and P3, respectively. Water solubility was achieved on P3' through increase of the hydrophilicity of the side chains. The acid-assistant reversible solubility of P1 makes it promising in preparing light-emitting multilayer devices. On the basis of FT-IR and H-1 NMR spectra, it was found that P1 is primarily of trans-vinyl while P2 and P3 are of 80% and 81% cis-vinyl, respectively, which depends on the polymerization method employed. The bulky phenyl substituents successfully impeded the interchain interaction which led to quantum efficiency as films comparable to that of solutions. Quaternization also resulted in more twisted conformation of the polymer main chain which was supported by both blue-shifted absorption and reduced quantum efficiency of P2' and P3' in solutions and as films than that of the neutral polymers. The fluorescence of PT was efficiently quenched by an anionic quencher Fe(CN)(6)(4-), K-SV of which is 3.3 x 10(6) M-1. However, a modified Stern-Volmer plot showed that 9% of the fluophores could not be accessible to the quencher, which may result from the twisted conformation or intermolecular aggregation.

Abstract:Four novel poly(aryl ether)s consisting of alternate isolated hole-transporting carbazole and electron-transporting 1,3,4-oxadiazole segments were synthesized from the nucleophilic displacement reaction of bis(fluoride) monomers with bis(phenol) monomers. These poly(aryl ether)s are soluble in common organic solvents and exhibit good thermal stability with 5% weight loss temperature above 400 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere. The photoluminescent (PL) spectra and quantum yields of these polymers are dependent on the composition of the two isolated fluorophores. The formation of exciplex in P3 was observed in the film and solution state and resulted in the lower quantum yield. The quantum yields of P4 in solutions can increase from 0.04 of P3 to 0.36, due to the dilute effect, by introducing the inert bisphenol A segments. Abstract:A pair of cationic phenylene ethynylene oligomers (OPEs) have been synthesized, and their optical properties have been studied in solution with and without added scaffold materials, including carboxymethylcellulose, carboxymethylamylose, and Laponite. The OPEs are strongly fluorescent in methanol solution, but in water, the fluorescence yield is suppressed. The addition of scaffolds to aqueous solutions of OPEs leads to a red shift in the absorption and in most cases a significant increase in the fluorescence quantum yield. The effects most likely arise because of template-induced formation of linear J-dimers or possibly because of planarization, which give rise to an effective increase in the conjugation length of OPEs.

Abstract:A series of diphenylamino-substituted phenylene-(poly)ethynylenes were successfully synthesized by a combination of Sonogashira coupling and double elimination protocol of β-substituted sulfones. When UV-light was irradiated, the amino-substituted phenylene-(poly)ethynylene emitted strong luminescence. The emission underwent a large bathochromic shift in polar solvent because of stabilization of their charge-separated excited states. Analyses of fluorescence life times of aminoacetylenes revealed that radiationless process was suppressed in the polar solvent CH2Cl2, resulting in high quantum yields.
Monomer and Dimer Emissions in the Solutions of a Monosubstituted Polyacetylene

Abstract:Photoluminescence (PL) of tetrahydrofuran solutions of a monosubstituted polyacetylene with liquid crystalline pendants, poly(11-{[4′-heptoxy-4-biphenylyl)carbonyl]oxy}-1-undecyne) (1), has been investigated. Intense ultraviolet emission (∼370 nm) has been detected in its dilute solution (2.5 μM). As the solution becomes concentrated (up to 39 mM), the emission color changes to deep blue and finally to blue (∼430 nm). In addition to the large-scale red shift in PL peak, its luminescent intensity changes about two orders of magnitude. Based on the extended Hückel tight-binding calculations, the 370 nm peak is assigned to monomer emission, which originates from the biphenyl mesogen in the pendants, and the peak at 430 nm corresponds to dimer emission, which is related to the aggregates formed in concentrated solutions. Lyotropic mesophase was observed as 1 dissolves in tetrahydrofuran.

Abstract:We have investigated the photophysics of the luminescent polymer poly(1,3-phenylenevinylene-alt-2,5-dioctyloxy-1,4-phenylenevinylene) by a variety of optical spectroscopies. The incorporation of alternating meta-phenylene and para-phenylene rings restricts conjugation with respect to poly(para-phenylenevinylene) derivatives. As a consequence, excited states are blueshifted and the nonlinear susceptibility is reduced. Absorption by aggregates, which can be obscured by scattering and interference, is clearly revealed by electroabsorption spectroscopy. The reduced symmetry of 1,3-PPV modifies optical selection rules, resulting in strong overlap of the fluorescence spectrum with excited state absorption by charged polarons.
