Abstract:Objective:To study the the safety and efficacy of high-power greenlight photoselective vaporization prostatectomy(PVP)in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH).Methods:A total of 156 patients with BPH underwent PVP,aged from 62 to 94 years(of them 32 being older than 80 years).Mean prostate volume was 72ml(range 40-148 ml).The operating time, blood loss, indwelling catheterization and operative complications were observed.IPSS,QOL,uroflowmetry, postvoid residual urine volume(RUV)were recorded before and after operation. Results:The procedure has been successful in all the patients. The mean operating time was(44.5±23.8)min,intraoperative blood loss was(43.2±16.4)ml,no patients required blood transfusion. No postoperative catheterization was needed in 32 patients. The mean catheterization time was(25.2±17.6)h(range 12-72h)in 124 patients. All patients were followed up for 4 to 14 months after treatment.IPSS decreased from preoperative(28.6±2.4)to postoperative(6.4±0.6).Qmax increased from(5.3±0.5)ml/s to(19.1±1.8)ml/s.QOL scores and RUV decreased from preoperative(5.4±0.6)and(254.6±69.7)ml to postoperative(1.2±0.7)and(20.5±4.6)ml,respectively.The differences were of significance(P<0.05).Conclusions:The PVP is safe and efficacious with low complication. It is believed to be the ideal choice for treating BPH.
