Abstract:Disks originating from supernova fallback have been suggested to surround young neutron stars. Interaction between the disk and the magnetic field of the neutron star may considerably influence the evolution of the star through the so called propeller effect. There are many controversies about the efficiency of the propeller mechanism proposed in the literature. We investigate the fallback disk-involved spin-down of young pulsars. By comparing the simulated and measured results of pulsar evolution, we present some possible constraints on the propeller torques exerted by the disks on neutron stars.

Abstract:We have calculated the evolution of neutron stars surrounded by a supernova fallback disk, with an improved estimate of the torque exerted by the disk and the time dependence of the mass transfer rate. We show that, for reasonable distributions of its free parameters, the disk model is unable to produce any anomalous X-ray pulsars as observed-the influence of the fallback disk on neutron star evolution was overestimated. Based on the calculated results, we also critically comment on the fossil disk model proposed recently for young radio pulsars.

Abstract:The spin evolution of isolated neutron stars (NSs) is dominated by their magnetic fields. The measured braking indices of young NSs show that the spin-down mechanism due to magnetic dipole radiation with constant magnetic fields is inadequate. Assuming that the NS magnetic field is buried by supernova fallback matter and re-emerges after accretion stops, we carry out a Monte Carlo simulation of the evolution of young NSs, and show that most of the pulsars have braking indices ranging from -1 to 3. The results are compatible with the observational data of NSs associated with supernova remnants. They also suggest that the initial spin periods of NSs might occupy a relatively wide range.

Abstract:We employ the supernova fallback disk model to simulate the spin evolution of isolated young neutron stars (NSs). We consider the submergence of the NS magnetic fields during the supercritical accretion stage and its succeeding reemergence. It is shown that the evolution of the spin periods and the magnetic fields in this model is able to account for the relatively weak magnetic fields of central compact objects and the measured braking indices of young pulsars. For a range of initial parameters, evolutionary links can be established among various kinds of NS sub-populations including magnetars, central compact objects and young pulsars. Thus, the diversity of young NSs could be unified in the framework of the supernova fallback accretion model.
Does Pulsar B1757--24 Have a Fallback Disk?

Abstract:Radio pulsars are thought to spin-down primarily due to torque from magnetic dipole radiation (MDR) emitted by the time-varying stellar magnetic field as the star rotates. This assumption yields a `characteristic age' for a pulsar which has generally been assumed to be comparable to the actual age. Recent observational limits on the proper motion of pulsar B1757-24, however, revealed that the actual age (>39 kyr) of this pulsar is much greater than its MDR characteristic age (16 kyr) - calling into question the assumption of pure MDR spin-down for this and other pulsars. To explore the possible cause of this discrepancy, we consider a scenario in which the pulsar acquired an accretion disk from supernova ejecta, and the subsequent spin-down occurred under the combined action of MDR and accretion torques. A simplified model of the accretion torque involving a constant mass inflow rate at the pulsar magnetosphere can explain the age and period derivative of the pulsar for reasonable values of the pulsar magnetic field and inflow rate. We discuss testable predictions of this model.

On the Interacting/Active Lifetime of Supernova Fallback Disks around Isolated Neutron Stars

Abstract:The fallback disk model is widely accepted to explain long-period neutron stars (NSs) that cannot be simulated by magnetic dipole radiation. However, there was no confirmed detection of disks from the newly discovered long-period pulsars GLEAM-X 162759.5-523504.3 and GPM J1839-10 and the slowest known isolated NS 1E 161348-5055. This might be because the disks have either been in a noninteracting/inactive state where their emission is too weak to be detected or have been disrupted. In this work, we conduct simulations to examine the lifetime of supernova fallback disks around isolated NSs. We assume that the disks' mass varies in a self-similar way, and their interaction with the NS occurs only in an interacting/active state. Our results reveal that nearly all the interacting lifetimes for the disks are shorter than 10 5 yr, while the existence lifetimes are considerably longer.

Abstract:Several pulsars with unusually long periods were discovered recently, comprising a potential population of ultralong period pulsars (ULPPs). The origin of their long periodicity is not well understood, but may be related to magnetars spun down by surrounding fallback disks. While there are few systematic investigations on the fallback-disk-assisted evolution of magnetars, instability in the disk has received little attention, which determines the lifetime of the disk. In this work we simulate the evolution of the magnetic field, spin period, and magnetic inclination angle of magnetars with a supernova fallback disk. We find that a thermal viscous instability in the disk could significantly affect the formation of ULPPs. Our simulation results also reveal that a large fraction of ULPPs seem to be nearly aligned and orthogonal rotators. This might help place ULPPs above the death line in the pulse period–period derivative plane. However, some extra mechanisms seem to be required to account for the radio emission of ULPPs.

Braking Psr J1734-3333 with A Possible Fall-Back Disk

Abstract:The very small braking index of PSR J1734-3333, n = 0.9 +/- 0.2, challenges the current theories of braking mechanisms in pulsars. We present a possible interpretation that this pulsar is surrounded by a fall-back disk and braked by it. A modified braking torque is proposed based on the competition between the magnetic energy density of the pulsar and the kinetic energy density of the fall-back disk. With this torque, a self-similar disk can fit all the observed parameters of PSR J1734-3333 with natural initial values of parameters. In this regime, the star will evolve to the region having anomalous X-ray pulsars and soft gamma repeaters in the P-(P) over dot diagram in about 20 000 years and stay there for a very long time. The mass of the disk around PSR J1734-3333 in our model is about 10M(circle plus), similar to the observed mass of the disk around AXP 4U 0142+61.

Abstract:The interaction of a rotating star’s magnetic field with a surrounding plasma disk lies at the heart of many questions posed by neutron stars in X-ray binaries. We consider the opening of stellar magnetic flux due to differential rotation along field lines coupling the star and disk, using a simple model for the disk-opened flux, the torques exerted on the star by the magnetosphere, and the power extracted by the electromagnetic wind. We examine the conditions under which the system enters an equilibrium spin state, in which the accretion torque is instantaneously balanced by the pulsar wind torque alone. For magnetic moments, spin frequencies, and accretion rates relevant to accreting millisecond pulsars, the spin-down torque from this enhanced pulsar wind can be substantially larger than that predicted by existing models of the disk–magnetosphere interaction, and is in principle capable of maintaining spin equilibrium at frequencies less than 1 kHz. We speculate that this mechanism may account for the non-detection of frequency increases during outbursts of SAX J1808.4-3658 and XTE J1814-338, and may be generally responsible for preventing spin-up to sub-millisecond periods. If the pulsar wind is collimated by the surrounding environment, the resulting jet can satisfy the power requirements of the highly relativistic outflows from Cir X-1 and Sco X-1. In this framework, the jet power scales relatively weakly with accretion rate, , and would be suppressed at high accretion rates only if the stellar magnetic moment is sufficiently low.
Low Braking Index of PSR J1734−3333: an Interaction Between Fall-Back Disc and Magnetic Field?

Abstract:Recent timing observation reported that the radio pulsar PSR J1734-3333 with a rotating period P = 1.17 s is slowing down with a period derivative. P = 2.28 x 10(-12) s s(-1). Its derived braking index n = 0.9 +/- 0.2 is the lowest value among young radio pulsars with the measured braking indices. In this Letter, we attempt to investigate the influence of the braking torque caused by the interaction between the fall-back disc and the strong magnetic field of the pulsar on the spin evolution of PSR J1734-3333. Analytical result show that this braking torque is obviously far more than that by magnetic dipole radiation for pulsars with spin period of >0.1 s, and play an important role during the spin-down of the pulsars. Our simulated results indicate that, for some typical neutron star parameters, the braking index and the period derivative approximately in agreement with the measured value of PSR J1734-3333 if the material inflow rate in the fall-back disc is 2 x 10(17) g s-1. In addition, our scenario can account for the measured braking indices of four young pulsars. However, our predicted X-ray luminosity are one to two order of magnitude higher than the observation. Abstract:The central compact object 1E 161348−5055 in the supernova remnant RCW 103 has a spin period ∼6.67 hr, making it the slowest isolated pulsar. It is believed that a supernova fallback disk is required to spin down the neutron star (NS) to the current spin period within a few thousand years. The mass of the fallback disk around newborn NSs can provide useful information on the supernova processes and the possible detection limit with optical/infrared observations. However, it is controversial how massive the disk is in the case of 1E 161348−5055. In this work we simulate the spin evolution of a magnetar that is driven by an interaction between the disk and the star’s magnetic field. Compared with previous studies, we take into account various critical conditions that affect the formation and evolution of the fallback disk. Our calculation shows that we can reproduce the extremely slow spin of 1E 161348−5055 when taking the initial disk mass Md ∼ 10−7 M⊙ and the NS magnetic field B ≥ 5 × 1015 G. This implies that 1E 161348−5055 may be a magnetar with very special initial parameters. However, if future observations reveal more objects like 1E 161348−5055, then stringent constraints can be placed on the supernova fallback.

Abstract:In light of the discovery of the long-period radio pulsar PSR J0901-4046, it is interesting to revisit a question about how the magnetized neutron star slows down its rotation. In the case of a weak or liquid outer crust, the mechanism of spin-down becomes unclear because the braking stress cannot then be transmitted from the surface to the main bulk of the star. We show that even if the outer crust does not withstand the surface electromagnetic forces creating the braking torque, the stellar spin-down does not stop, and the matter rearranges so that the necessary electromagnetic forces form in more deep and rigid layers capable of withstanding these forces. The spin-down rate remains the same and corresponds to the transformation of the rotational energy of the neutron star into the energy of the generated relativistic electron-positron plasma. The solid iron surface of ultrastrongly magnetized PSR J0901-4046 appears not to be yielding and withstands the braking stress without breaking.

The spin-down accretion regime of Galactic ultra-luminous X-ray pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124

Abstract:The relative high fluxes of the Galactic ultra-luminous X-ray pulsar Swift J0243 allow a detailed study of its spin-down regime in quiescence state, for a first time. After the 2017 giant outburst, its spin frequencies show a linear decreasing trend with some variations due to minor outbursts. The linear spin-down rate is $\sim-1.9\times10^{-12}$ Hz/s during the period of lowest luminosity, from which one can infer a dipole field $\sim1.75\times10^{13}$ G. The $\dot{\nu}-L$ relation during the spin-down regime is complex, and the $\dot{\nu}$ is close to 0 when the luminosity reaches both the high end ($L_{38}\sim0.3$) and the lowest value ($L_{38}\sim0.03$). The luminosity of zero-torque is different for the giant outburst and other minor outbursts. It is likely due to different accretion flows for different types of outburst, as evidenced by the differences of the spectra and pulse profiles at a similar luminosity for different types of outburst (giant or not). The pulse profile changes from double peaks in the spin-up state to a single broad peak in the low spin-down regime, indicating the emission beam/region is larger in the low spin-down regime. These results show that accretion is still ongoing in the low spin-down regime for which the neutron star is supposed to be in a propeller state.

Abstract:Several X-ray pulsars have been observed to experience torque reversals, which provide important observational clues to the interaction between the neutron star magnetic field and the accretion disk. We review the current models proposed for the torque reversals and discuss their viability based on the observations of the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in 4U 1626-67. Most of these models seem to be incompatible with the evolution of the QPO frequencies if they are interpreted in terms of the beat frequency model. We suggest that winds or outflows from the neutron star and the accretion disk may play an important role in accounting for the spin-down in disk-fed neutron stars.
A Fallback Disk Accretion-Involved Formation Channel to PSR J1903+0327

Abstract:The discovery of the eccentric binary and millisecond pulsar J1903+03273 has raised interesting questions about the formation mechanisms of this peculiar system. Here we present a born-fast scenario for PSR J1903+03273. We assume that during the supernova (SN) explosion that produced the pulsar, a fallback disk was formed around and accreted onto the newborn neutron star. Mass accretion could accelerate the neutron star's spin to milliseconds, and decrease its magnetic field to similar to 10(8)-10(9) G, provided that there was sufficient mass (similar to 0.1 M circle dot) in the fallback disk. The neutron star became a millisecond pulsar after mass accretion terminated. In the meanwhile the binary orbit has kept to be eccentric (due to the SN explosion) for similar to 10(9) yr. We have performed population synthesis calculations of the evolutions of neutron stars with a fallback disk, and found that there might be tens to hundreds of PSR J1903+03273 like systems in the Galaxy. This scenario also suggests that some fraction of isolated millisecond pulsars in the Galactic disk could be formed through the same channel.
Exploration of Spin-Down Rate of Neutron Stars in High-Mass X-ray Binaries

Abstract:We use the evolutionary population synthesis method to investigate the statistical properties of the wind-fed neutron-star (NS) compact (P-orb < 10 d) high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) in our Galaxy, based on different spin-down models. Model 1 assumes that the surrounding material is treated as forming a quasi-static atmosphere. Model 2 assumes that the characteristic velocity of matter and the typical Alfven velocity of material in the magnetospheric boundary layer are comparable to the sound speed in the external medium. We find that the spin-down rate in the supersonic propeller phase in either model 1 or model 2 is too low to produce the observed number of compact HMXBs. Model 3 assumes that the infalling material is ejected with the corotation velocity at the magnetospheric radius when the magnetospheric radius is larger than the corotation radius. Model 4 uses simple integration of the magnetic torque over the magnetosphere. Both models 3 and 4 have a larger spin down rate than that given by model 1 or 2. We also find that models 3 and 4 can predict a reasonable number of observed wind-fed NS compact HMXBs. By comparing our calculated results with the observed particular distributions of wind-fed NS compact HMXBs in a P-s versus P-orb diagram, we find that the subsonic propeller phase may not exist at all. However, the spin-down rates in models 3 and 4 both seem reasonable to produce the observed distribution of wind-fed NS compact HMXBs in the P-s versus P-orb diagram. We cannot find which spin-down rate seems more reasonable from our calculations.
Spindown of Pulsars Interacting with Companion Winds: Impact of Magnetospheric Compression

Abstract:The presence of a companion wind in neutron star binary systems can form a contact discontinuity well within the pulsar's light cylinder, effectively creating a waveguide that confines the pulsar's electromagnetic fields and significantly alters its spindown. We parametrize this confinement as the ratio between the equatorial position of the contact discontinuity (or standoff distance) $R_\mathrm{m}$ and the pulsar's light cylinder $R_\mathrm{LC}$. We quantify the pulsar spindown for relativistic wind envelopes with $R_\mathrm{m}/R_\mathrm{LC} = 1/3...1$ and varying inclination angles $\chi$ between magnetic and rotation axes using particle-in-cell simulations. Our strongly confined models ($R_\mathrm{m}/R_\mathrm{LC} = 1/3$) identify two distinct limits. For $\chi=0^\circ$, the spindown induced by the compressed pulsar magnetosphere is enhanced by approximately three times compared to an isolated pulsar due to an increased number of open magnetic field lines. Conversely, for $\chi=90^\circ$, the compressed system spins down at less than $40\%$ of the rate of an isolated reference pulsar due to the mismatch between the pulsar wind stripe wavelength and the waveguide size. We directly apply our analysis to the 2.77-second period oblique rotator ($\chi=60^\circ$) in the double pulsar system PSR J0737-3039. With the numerically derived spindown estimate, we constrain its surface magnetic field to $B_* \approx (7.3 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{11}$ G. We discuss the time modulation of its period derivative, the effects of compression on its braking index, and implications for the radio eclipse in PSR J0737-3039.
