Abstract:To achieve the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality under the backgrounds of poor resource endowments, weak theoretical basis and other factors, the development of the coalbed methane industry of China faces many bottlenecks and challenges. This paper systematically analyzes the coalbed methane resources, key technologies and progress, exploration effect and production performance in China and abroad. The main problems are summarized as low exploration degree, low technical adaptability, low return on investment and small development scale. This study suggests that the coalbed methane industry in China should follow the "two-step" (short-term and long-term) development strategy. The short-term action before 2030, can be divided into two stages: (1) From the present to 2025, to achieve new breakthroughs in theory and technology, and accomplish the target of annual production of 10 billion cubic meters; (2) From 2025 to 2030, to form the technologies suitable for most geological conditions, further expand the industry scale, and achieve an annual output of 30 billion cubic meters, improving the proportion of coalbed methane in the total natural gas production. The long-term action after 2030 is to gradually realize an annual production of 100 billion cubic meters. The strategic countermeasure to achieve the above goals is to adhere to "technology+management dual wheel drive", realize the synchronous progress of technology and management, and promote the high-quality development of the coalbed methane industry. Technically, the efforts will focus on fine and effective development of coalbed methane in the medium to shallow layers of mature fields, effective development of coalbed methane in new fields, extensive and beneficial development of deep coalbed methane, three-dimensional comingled development of coalbed methane, applying new technologies such as coalbed methane displacement by carbon dioxide, microwave heating and stimulation technology, ultrasonic stimulation, high-temperature heat injection stimulation, rock breaking by high-energy laser. In terms of management, the efforts will focus on coordinative innovation of resource, technology, talent, policy and investment, with technological innovation as the core, to realize an all-round and integrated management and promote the development of coalbed methane industry at a high level.

Abstract:With the development of economy and society and the enhancement of public awareness of environmental protection,the traditional energy structure based on coal is difficult to adapt to the development of the times.The proportion of clean energy consumption will being creased,so the unconventional natural gas dominated by coal-bed methane will be faced with very important opportunities for development.This paper analyzes a large number of industry data and evolution of relevant state policies,and compares the stages of American industry development.On this basis,it analyzes the current situation of coalbed methane industry in China,judges the future development trend,and summarizes the main problems faced by the industry.It is found that coalbed methane is the most potential unconventional natural gas resource in China.At present,China's coalbed methane industry is in the beginning of rapid development.At tlast,the paper points out the main problems of coal mining industry in China,such as overlapping of mining rights,improvement of exploration and development technology,improvement of investment environment,and improvement of service system in industry.

Abstract:It is of an important strategic meaning of coalbed methane industry for energy development in China. Exploration and exploitation of coalbed methane of China can be divided into 4 stages, namely, pump drainage and usage of mine gas; introduction, development, and successful application of modern coalbed methane theory and technology; commercial development stage; and industrialization development stage. Because of the development, innovation, and systematic integration of basic geological theories, ex-ploration technical methods, exploitation technology, gathering and transportation, and management sys-tem, coalbed methane industry can develop in large scale in China. This is a rare historical development opportunity for energy development strategy for China. In order to accelerate the development of coalbed methane, it is necessary to strengthen overall planning to bring the initiative into play; to strengthen geo-logical research of coalbed methane to improve levels of guidance and target evaluation for regional explora-tion; to do research of high efficiency and low cost development technology; to develop gathering and pro-cessing of coalbed methane product; and to continue to track current theories and technologies of foreign countries and strength communication and cooperation of research.

Abstract:Coal bed methane(CBM) as an unconventional natural gas is a valuable energy resources;meanwhile the main content of CBM,methane,is also one of the most important gases that contribute towards inducing the greenhouse effect.The mitigation and utilization of coal bed methane,by reducing methane emissions and producing energy from recovered methane,can offer both opportunities to mitigate global climate change and to generate new sources of clean energy,which is therefore of great significance in both economic and environmental aspects and has received extensive attentions in recent years.In this paper,we attempt to make a review on the recent progresses of research and development in the mitigation and utilization of CBM.We focused mainly on the application of catalytic combustion in CBM mitigation and utilization,especially the deoxygenation of oxygen-bearing CBM,which is the key issue for methane concentration through pressure swing adsorption,as well as the mitigation and heat recovery of ventilation air methane(VAM) by using catalytic flow reversal reactor.Lastly,we would have an outlook on the possible technologies for the integrated utilization of CBM.
Challenges and Opportunities of Coalbed Methane Development in China

Abstract:Coalbed methane (CBM) resources in China have been estimated to exceed 36 Tcm. As of 2014, there were ∼9300 producing CBM wells in China with an annual production of ∼4.4 Bcm. To satisfy its need for energy and to transition to a low-carbon economy, China has a big need to accelerate CBM development. This paper gives an overview of the status of CBM development in China, identifies key technical challenges, and proposes solutions to overcome them. Our review of the literature has revealed that current CBM development in China faces several technical challenges. Current projects are focused on high-rank coals in the Qinshui and Ordos basins, which have major geological and engineering challenges. The former includes low permeability, subhydrostatic reservoir pressure, and a lack of understanding of the connectivity of coal seams, which leads to difficulty in sweet spot indication. The latter includes difficulty in hydraulic fracturing in vertical wells, because of the ductile nature of the coal seams in the Qinshui basin, bore hole instability and formation damage during drilling of horizontal wells. To remedy this situation, we propose a refocus on the more-abundant high-permeability low-rank coals in China and detailed coal seam characterization using current industry best practices of static and dynamic modeling of CBM reservoirs. This refocus on low-rank coal may lessen the need for hydraulic fracturing in vertical wells. For horizontal wells, research should focus on non-formation-damaging drilling fluids, incorporating geomechanics studies to reduce the risk of borehole collapse during drilling and production, and new horizontal well designs, which minimize the risk of collapse of the mother bore.

Abstract:<p>China is vigorously promoting the development of coalbed methane (CBM) resources because CBM is cleaner than coal and a hazardous gas in coal mining. However, the CBM production in China is significantly lower than that in other coal‐rich countries, such as Australia and the United States. In this paper, the main problems hindering CBM development in China are discussed to provide management suggestions for the government. These key problems include exploration and development techniques, the overlap of mining rights, management, financial supporting policy, investment environment, regulations, and market conditions. The results of this study indicate that to improve the development of the CBM industry in China, national and local governments must enact specific and exercisable regulations to increase financial support, improve technology, increase investment in CBM exploration, strengthen public project establishment, and improve the reform of CBM exploration and development policies.</p>

Abstract:As an essential unconventional natural gas resource, China’s coalbed methane resources are only commercially exploited in a few areas, such as the Qinshui Basin and the Ordos. The rise of coalbed methane bioengineering makes it possible to realize the conversion and utilization of carbon dioxide through microbial action and the carbon cycle. According to the metabolic behavior of the underground microbial community, if the coal reservoir is modified, it may stimulate the microorganism to continuously produce biomethane to prolong the production life of depleted coalbed methane wells. This paper systematically discusses the microbial response to promoting microbial metabolism by nutrients (microbial stimulation), introducing exogenous microorganisms or domestication of in situ microorganisms (microbial enhancement), pretreating coal to change its physical or chemical properties to improve bioavailability, and improving environmental conditions. However, many problems must be solved before commercialization. The whole coal reservoir is regarded as a giant anaerobic fermentation system. Some issues still need to be solved during the implementation of coalbed methane bioengineering. Firstly, the metabolic mechanism of methanogenic microorganisms should be clarified. Secondly, it is urgent to study the optimization of high-efficiency hydrolysis bacteria and nutrient solutions in coal seams. Finally, the research on the underground microbial community ecosystem and biogeochemical cycle mechanism must be improved. The study provides a unique theory for the sustainable development of unconventional natural gas resources. Furthermore, it provides a scientific basis for realizing the carbon dioxide reuse and carbon element cycle in coalbed methane reservoirs.

Abstract:To accelerate exploration and development of coalbed methane resources,this paper applies economic methods to study the costs and comprehensive benefits of developing CBM in southern China in the future 30 years.The results show that the CMB production in 2015 will be 1×108 m3 and then enters a fast growing stage,in 2040 will be 45×108 m3.The comprehensive benefits are estimated to be far more than developing costs.The CBM is an alternative resources for natural gas in southern China.
Overview and Outlook on Utilization Technologies of Low-Concentration Coal Mine Methane

Abstract:Coal mine methane (CMM) with the worldwide reserves of 2.6 × 1014 m3 is one of the important unconventional natural gases. However, most of the low-concentration coal mine methane (LC-CMM, cCH4 < 30 vol %) is not utilized and directly emitted to the atmosphere, producing up to about 28 billion m3 CH4 emissions annually and causing a serious greenhouse effect and energy loss. Evidently, resource utilization of LC-CMM is of vital significance to achieve energy transition and carbon neutrality. Herein, we review the recent advances of LC-CMM utilization technologies in terms of low-concentration drainage gas (1 vol % < cCH4 < 30 vol %) and ventilation air methane (VAM, cCH4 < 0.75 vol %). Especially, the great progresses of LC-CMM utilization in China are extensively introduced. A large amount of the low-concentration drainage gas with cCH4 > 6 vol % has been utilized in China due to the wide application of specially designed internal combustion engines (ICEs) and safe pipeline transport technologies. To avoid the shortages of low efficiency and high pollution of ICEs, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) fueled by LC-CMM were recently proposed and modified for improving safety, efficiency, and stability. Also, methane enrichment such as pressure swing adsorption (PSA) and direct burning are key technologies to improve the utilization ratio of the drainage gas with cCH4 < 6 vol %. The modifications to improve the safety and efficiency of the PSA process and the new metal fiber combustion have been developed and applied in China. Furthermore, the recent advances of VAM utilization technologies are introduced. A thermal flow reverse reactor (TFRR) for VAM utilization has been applied in some coal mines. VAM enrichment and a catalytic flow reverse reactor (CFRR) create opportunities to efficiently use VAM with much lower CH4 concentration. Finally, the technical and economic challenges as well as the coping strategies of LC-CMM utilization are described. It is believed that LC-CMM with all various CH4 concentrations can be effectively and cleanly utilized in the near future, contributing to the new energy structure establishment and environment protection.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Over the past decade, the exploration and development of deep coalbed methane (CBM) resources in China have attracted significant attention for their immense potential. Typically found in geological conditions marked by high formation temperature, reservoir pressure, and in-situ stress, exploring and developing these resources present a multitude of challenges. As the coal seams extend to greater depths, adsorption behavior, pore-fracture structure, and mechanical properties of deep coal seams become increasingly intricate, impacting properties such as gas content, permeability, and fracability. Despite the presence of significant free gas in deep CBM reservoirs, production remains challenging due to the extremely low permeability of coal seams. Additionally, high in-situ stress and complex mechanical parameters of deep coal seams can significantly reduce hydraulic fracturing performance, further complicating the development of deep CBM. This comprehensive review provides a detailed analysis of the geological conditions and formation property variations at different depths for CBM reservoirs, illuminating the distinctions between deep and shallow CBM reservoirs. Furthermore, this review summarizes the pilot tests and research perspectives in China to address the challenges associated with exploring and developing deep CBM resources. By raising awareness of the particularities of deep CBM and offering practical and accessible references, this review aims to contribute to the better exploration and development of these valuable resources.

Analysis of coal bed methane enrichment and liquefaction processes in China

Abstract:Recovery coal bed methane is vital for energy utilization and for safety and environment protection. At coal mines that are not close to natural gas networks and the coal bed methane production is not very large, liquefaction of coal bed methane is a good option for recovery. For coal bed methane with high nitrogen content, enrichment of coal bed methane is needed. The processes of coal bed methane enrichment and liquefaction suitable for China are examined. The coal bed methane is enriched via pressure swing adsorption (PSA). A model is developed to simulate the PSA process. The separation of CH 4/N 2 mixture is studied using an activated carbon as adsorbent. Simulation and experiments show that activated carbon can be used in the PSA separation process. The optimum liquefaction process of these small-scale plants is analyzed wherein three types of liquefaction cycles are evaluated, i.e., a C3IMRC process, an MRC process, and a nitrogen-methane expander process. C3/MRC process is suitable for coal mines with large and sustainable CBM production, where efficiency is the most important factor. Abstract:The projects of exploiting coal-bed methane belong not only to the project of resource exploitation and utilization, but social public project. A series of economic policies have been put forward to encourage coal-bed methane exploitation in China, but there are still some issues which requires urgent solution during the process of its industrialization. The paper introduces some foreign governments' inspiring policies of exploiting coal-mine methane and puts forward some proposals in the light of the practice in China for promoting coal-bed methane exploitation and utilization.

Abstract:As the most effective supplement of conventional fossil fuels,unconventional natural gas has been given wide attention in the world due to a huge amount of resources.U.S.,with its advanced technology and more mature geological theory,has achieved a commercial exploitation of coalbed methane and shale gas,and walks in today's world.The concepts,characteristics,status and development conditions,assessment contents of this two kinds of unconventional natural gas in the United States are reviewed.By this analysis and research,it is suggested that our country should pay attention on coalbed methane and shale gas to the following three areas.Firstly,we should fully understand the strategic position and major research significance; secondly,we should resolve the current key geological and technical issues; finally,we should study the development and management policies in today's China.

Abstract:Coalbed methane is released externally due to coal mining activities. Given its low concentration, which renders utilization challenging, China annually vents approximately 285 billion cubic meters of coalbed methane into the atmosphere, leading to significant energy waste and greenhouse gas emissions. To enhance the utilization rate of coalbed methane, mitigate these emissions, and promote a "green and low-carbon" energy supply, this article investigates pressure swing adsorption technology for purifying coalbed methane and analyzes the advantages, disadvantages, and application scopes of three processes: separation based on equilibrium effects, kinetic effects, and steric hindrance effects. The research findings reveal that equilibrium effect-based adsorption is particularly advantageous for purifying low-concentration coalbed methane, effectively capturing methane (CH4). Conversely, when dealing with medium- to high-concentration coalbed methane, methods leveraging kinetic effects prove more favorable. Within the context of equilibrium effects, activated carbon serves as a suitable adsorbent; however, achieving high-purity products entails substantial energy consumption. The methane saturation adsorption capacity of novel activated carbons has reached 2.57 mol/kg. Kinetic effect-based adsorbents, primarily carbon molecular sieves and zeolite molecular sieves, are characterized by lower energy demands. Currently, coal-based molecular sieves have achieved a CH4/N2 equilibrium separation factor of 4.21, and the amount of raw coal required to produce one ton of carbon molecular sieve has decreased to 2.63 tons. In light of the rapid advancement of intensive coal mining operations and the swift implementation of smart mine construction, there is an urgent need to intensify research on large-scale purification technologies for low-concentration coalbed methane. This will provide the technical foundation necessary for achieving "near-zero emission" of mine gas and facilitate the achievement of the goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality.

Abstract:Coalbed gas is clean energy, commercial development of which has good economic and social benefits. The Lianghuai area in Anhui is rich in coalbed gas, the latest estimate of which is put at 515.547 billion m3 for the horizon from surface to 2000m below, consisting of 361.407 m3 from the Huainan coalfield and 154.14 m3 from the Huaibei coalfield (excluding the Sui-Xiao coal mine). Limited by geological conditions, currently, the Lianghuai coalfields mainly employ underground gas extraction other than commercial borehole extraction of coalbed gas, which has not yet succeeded. Based on systematic summary and analysis of present situation of coalbed gas exploration and development in the Lianghuai area, this paper puts forward suggestions and countermeasures for the coalbed gas industry development from the perspective of industry planning, fundamental geology study, development technology tackling and policy support.

Abstract:Due to the energy characteristic of rich coal and less gas in China, developing coal to gas (CTG) was one of the important ways to obtain the natural gas resources and to alleviate the contradiction between supply and demand of natural gas. Developing CTG projects could not only utilize inferior coal resources in China reasonably and adjust the structure of coal consumption, but could also realize the clean utilization of coal and relieve the tense gas supply, as well as ensure the energy security. The industrial process, governmental policy and current status of the CTG industry in China were presented. Besides, the necessity and economy of domestic development of CTG as well as the main problems in the development process of CTG were analyzed. Finally, feasible suggestions for healthy development of CTG industry were put forward.

Abstract:The resource endowment characteristics of "abundant coal, scarce oil, limited methane" in China determine that coal will remain the fundamental energy source, maintaining its predominant position. Realizing the green and low-carbon operation of the precise methane extraction technology system in the entire life cycle of coal mining is one of the key tasks for the sustainable development of the coal industry. In response to the new situation requirements of the "carbon peak and carbon neutrality" background and the technical challenges of carbon emission reduction at the source of methane in coal mines, with "quality improvement and efficiency enhancement, carbon emission reduction" as the core, and "precise methane extraction, green and low-carbon" dual objectives as the guide. With "process technology and equipment intelligent innovation" as the main line, based on the technical aspects of the complete process of coal mine methane extraction, the technology system of precise methane extraction in the entire life cycle of coal mining has been actively explored and constructed. It has realized the coordinated coupling of precise methane extraction, and green and low-carbon. A carbon emission reduction technology system has been formed at the source of coal mine methane with reliable technology - low-consumption equipment - safety and intelligence. Subsequently, five key technical issues were investigated: precise prediction of methane content - methane emission volume - methane "sweet spot" resource areas, precise pre-extraction of methane in the mining coal seam by the "time-sharing + partitioning" method, precise extraction of pressure relief methane from mining by the "regional segmentation + directional" method, precise extraction of methane from the "sweet spot" resource areas in abandoned mine, and "dynamic + intelligent" precise control of coal seam methane extraction. Finally, the future development directions of the precise methane extraction technology system for coal mining throughout its life cycle under the goal of "carbon peak and carbon neutrality" are elaborated, including the deep integration of "dynamic - transparent" coal geology and "intelligent - precise" methane pre-extraction, the deep integration of "dynamic - transparent" transport and storage area of pressure relief methane and "precise - regional segmentation" directional extraction, enhanced methane extraction technology of the methane "sweet spot" resource area through CO2 absorption and storage in abandoned mine, the integrated platform of "precise prediction - intelligent design, precise monitoring - intelligent assessment, precise diagnosis - intelligent regulation", and "Smart+" technology combining precise methane extraction - energy saving and emission reduction for equipment - green and low-carbon for mines. By implementing the precise methane extraction technology system for the entire life cycle of coal mining under the goal of "carbon peak and carbon neutrality", new ideas are provided for achieving methane precise extraction, green and low-carbon goals in China's coal industry.

Abstract:Coalbed methane embedded in coal seams, is an unconventional energy resource as well as a hazardous gas existing in mining industries, which attracts lots of global attention. As the largest coal producer, the mining industry in China had to deal with many hazards induced by methane for decades. To solve this issue, underground methane extraction is commonly used in underground coal mines. However, underground methane extraction is hampered by low production rate and low efficiency because of slow gas emission from coal primarily controlled by gas desorption and permeability. It is well known that temperature has a great impact on gas sorption. The higher the temperature the larger the desorption rate. As the depth of coal mines increases beyond 1000m coal mines suffer elevated air temperatures caused by the natural geothermal gradient. The elevated temperature in such mines provides a potential economical way for geothermal energy extraction and utilization in deep coal mines which can largely cut the expenses of installation and operation maintenance. Therefore, a novel method is proposed to enhance underground methane extraction by deep heat stimulation. This paper mainly presents an assessment of previous and ongoing research in the related field and provides a first feasibility analysis of this method applied in the underground environment. The technique proposed in this early appraisal is deemed significant for coalbed methane drainage enhancing the productivity of deep coal mines by geothermal technology and can also be extended for many applications in relevant areas such as shale gas, and tight oil.
