Abstract:Based on the analysis of"ceramic tubes"using for bronze casting,this paper argues that the tombs of craft producers at the Zhouyuan site during the Western Zhou period were buried in the workshop area.It corrects our previous error view about the characteristic of settlement structure at the Zhouyuan site,and further discusses the role of the artifacts with special function played in the study of settlement structure.

Abstract:Piece mould casting technology, as a hall mark of the central plains of China during the Bronze Age, has attracted scholars' interest globally. Bronze ritual vessels found in this area were produced in large quantities and generally cast with the moulds composed of three or more sections. This enormous industry certainly required workers to have had professional knowledge to ensure the success of every single cast. Mould making technology was one of its most important parts. This research looks into the microstructure of bronze casting moulds of the Eastern Zhou period, which was a rarely studied topic in previous research. Through comparison with local pottery, it is shown that casting moulds in this period were produced with quite specialized sand-rich material, and clay was only a minor component. It is then discussed how this unique material can be beneficial to the bronze casting process and how this technology was integrated as a crucial part of the Chinese bronze casting system. These analyses might be able to portray mould makers in the ancient bronze foundries as a group of specialized people with their own traditions and professional knowledge.

Abstract:Abstract This paper puts forward a new interpretation about the casting techniques of Western Zhou bronze inscriptions, especially those cast in raised grids. In fuller consideration of the various phenomena seen on the bronzes, this paper suggests a nine-step workflow in which transitional molds were employed to produce the real casting core with raised texts to be used for final casting. This new theory not only fully explains the production of long inscriptions with sunken texts and raised grids, but also explains the technical details behind a number of recently discovered special inscriptions.

Abstract:This article presents a technological analysis of the bronze artifacts excavated from the Western Zhou Dynasty cemetery at Beiyao, Luoyang. The results show that the tin content in the Western Zhou bronze artifacts from the Beiyao cemetery is comparable to that of the bronze artifacts from the Yinxu Phase II, indicating that the Western Zhou nobles were able to control and use stable tin sources in the early Western Zhou period. The lead isotope ratios of the artifacts are mostly within the range of ordinary lead, and some overlap with the lead isotope ratios of some bronze artifacts from Yinxu, suggesting that some of the minerals exploited by the late Shang people were also exploited on a large scale in the early Western Zhou period. The study also shows that the circulation of metal minerals was a common and normalized social behavior during the Western Zhou period and was the most important logistical entity in social production at that time.

Abstract:A new generation of scholars has called into question the homogeneous nature of Western Zhou culture and the sweeping imposition of this culture over a large region that covers much of present-day China. Our study contributes to this debate by focusing on a coherent group of bronze vessels dated to the end of the Western Zhou and beginning of the Spring and Autumn periods. He (盉) vessels with drum-shaped bodies, bird-like lids, and human-like legs are among the most unique and artistically innovative artifacts of this period. While these unique artifacts have been found in and near the center of the Western Zhou polity, they are not associated with the rituals of the royal house, but rather with those of other aristocratic lineages. We argue that the artistic style of the vessels was part of the culture developed around the royal Zhou house and in areas close to it, although it is not strictly representative of the royal culture of the Western Zhou, being instead associated with minor lineages. A multi-dimensional analysis of this group of vessels, addressing their geographical distribution, location within their archaeological context, and social associations, combined with an analysis of their decorative scheme and the inscriptions cast inside them, enables us to better understand the socio-cultural landscape of this period. Our study suggests that diversity existed not only in remote border areas or among the lower strata of society, but also within the cultural core of the Western Zhou polity and among the highest echelons of the aristocracy. Such processes of diversification are associated with the development of local and regional identities and with the growth of the political independence of aristocratic lineages during the final years of the transition from the Western Zhou to the Spring and Autumn periods. Abstract:Casting had symbolic significance and was strictly controlled in the Shang dynasty of ancient China. Vessel casting was mainly distributed around the Shang capital, Yin Ruins, which indicates a rigorous centralization of authority. Thus, for a casting mold to be excavated far from the capital region is rare. In addition to some bronze vessel molds excavated at the Buyao Village site, another key discovery of a bronze vessel mold occurred at Daxinzhuang. The Daxinzhuang site was a core area in the east of Shang state and is an important site to study the eastward expansion of the Shang. Here, combining synchrotron X-rays and other physicochemical analysis methods, nondestructive three-dimensional structure imaging and different elemental analyses were conducted on this mold sherd. Through high penetration X-ray tomography, we obtained insights on the internal structure and discovered some pores. We infer that the generation of pores inside the casting mold sherd was used to enhance air permeability during casting. Furthermore, we suppose that the decorative patterns on the surface were carved and not pasted onto it. Considering the previous compositional studies of bronze vessels, the copper and iron elements were analyzed by different methods. Unexpectedly, a larger amount of iron than of copper was detected on the surface. According to the data analysis and archaeological context, the source of iron on the casting mold sherd could be attributed to local soil contamination. A refined compositional analysis confirms that this casting mold was fabricated locally and used for bronze casting.

Abstract:The production and circulation of bronzes among the regional states of the Western Zhou Dynasty are an important way of understanding the political and ritual systems of the dynasty. This paper studies the production and circulation of bronzes from three points of view: the cultural background, techniques, and raw materials of bronzes. First, the authors classified the bronzes excavated from the Zhouyuan Site, Yejiashan Cemetery, the Cemetery of the Lords of Jin, and Yu State Cemetery based on shapes and techniques. On this basis, a trace element analysis and lead isotope analysis were conducted to investigate the quality of the raw materials. The three aspects used for classification-cultural background, technologies and raw materials-complement each other during the discussion of the issues of interest. The authors conclude that high-quality bronzes from Ji-surnamed regional states represented by those excavated from Yejiashan Cemetery and the Cemetery of the Lords of Jin show consistency with Zhouyuan bronzes in the royal court in terms of raw materials, shapes, and techniques, therefore indicating their origin from unified workshops. However, low-quality bronzes produced in these places, and also bronzes from non-Ji-surnamed regional states, represented by those excavated in Yu State and Peng State, possess unique shape and technique characteristics, and included different copper materials and partly the same lead materials, reflecting the degree of independence that regional states enjoyed in terms of bronze production. The imperial court uniformly made high-quality bronzes, and distributed them to all regional states, while the regional states independently produced some low-quality bronzes; this system probably came into being during the early Western Zhou Dynasty. However, from the middle period of the Western Zhou Dynasty, some regional states increased their independence in the production of bronzes, and the distribution system of the imperial court began to collapse gradually.

Abstract:The School of History, Zhengzhou University et al. excavated two bronze foundry zones in the northern part of the larger city at the Guanzhuang site in the summer of 2016 and the autumn of 2017. Archaeological features related to bronze casting were revealed, such as ash pits, wells, and sacrificial pits. A large number of casting artifacts were also retrieved, including clay molds, models, cores, furnace fragments, tuyeres, bronze knives, and whetstones. Judging from the characteristics of the clay molds and co-existing pottery artifacts, the bronze foundries dates to the early- and mid-Spring and Autumn period. A great variety of unearthed artifacts from the Guanzhuang bronze foundries, as well as the material repertoire for casting large bronze ritual vessels and coins, testify that the owner of the workshop could have enjoyed a high social status and possessed great wealth. This is of great importance for the understanding of the nature and function of the Guanzhuang site during the early- and mid-Spring and Autumn period.

Abstract:The collection of twelve bronze artifacts discovered in Xichuan provides invaluable historical insights into the Warring States period (476 BC to 221 BC) of ancient China. To investigate their fabrication techniques and current state of preservation, a comprehensive analysis was conducted using a metallographic microscope, a scanning electron microscope, and an electron spectrometer to examine the microstructure and elemental composition of the artifacts. The findings revealed that the copper content in these bronze artifacts varied between 41.82% and 87.95%, the tin content ranged from 6.79% to 46.88%, and the lead content was less than 28.96%. The microstructure exhibited an α-solid-solution dendritic-crystal-segregation structure, with a substantial amount of (α + δ) eutectic distributed in an island-like pattern. Lead was dispersed unevenly, appearing as small granules and large ellipsoids. The composition of these weapons aligned with their intended use, adhering to the manufacturing standards of traditional Chinese bronzes. However, their state of preservation was suboptimal, necessitating immediate protective measures. This study contributes physical evidence to the research on early Chinese bronze production and offers scientific guidance for the conservation and restoration of these bronze artifacts.

Bronze Production in the Ancient Chengdu Plains: A Diachronic Metallurgical Perspective on a Separate Cultural Region

Abstract:As one of the most important separate cultural regions in ancient China, the Chengdu Plains provide a unique example to explore the development of bronze production. We analysed 37 bronze objects from the Western Zhou period to the Tang Dynasty in the Chengdu Plains for elemental compositions, microstructure, and lead isotope ratios. We referred to bronze data from the Sanxingdui sacrificial pits to compare results that demonstrated that most samples from the Chengdu Plains were Cu-Pb-Sn alloys with variable tin and lead content. The alloy technique used in the Warring States period bronzes, which were uncovered in the Baishoulu cemetery, differed from the techniques used in other samples. Casting is the major technique used for all types of objects in different periods. The only cold-worked and annealed sample found so far was a Chu-style vessel. Different lead sources and a possible single copper source were constantly used in local bronze production from the Western Zhou Dynasty to the Warring States period (more than 600 years). Some coins in Han and Tang Dynasty potentially also used these same lead sources. Comparison with Sanxingdui bronze suggests that both lead and copper sources of Sanxingdui bronzes are different from the later metal sources. We therefore propose that the Sanxingdui bronze might not have been locally made or was made with outside materials. Our study suggests that diachronic study on bronze production could provide clues to solve more archaeological questions other than the development of bronze production.
Cultural exchange and integration: archaeometallurgical case study on underneath-blade bronze dagger-axes from Shuangyuan Village Site in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty

Abstract:As typical artifacts of the Ba-Shu culture, bronze dagger-axes have always been highly valued by academia. Underneath-blade bronze dagger-axes were utilized widely in both the Central Plains and southwest China. However, opinions differ on whether these underneath-blade bronze dagger-axes which excavated from Ba-Shu culture were produced locally. Combined with archaeological typology study, p-XRF and MC-ICP-MS were used to analyze 12 underneath-blade bronze dagger-axes unearthed from Shuangyuan Village Site, an Eastern Zhou cemetery in Chengdu city, Sichuan Province, Southwest China in order to investigate the cultural exchange and integration centered on the Shu culture. The composition results show that the majority of samples were made from copper, tin, and lead ternary alloy. The data on lead isotopes indicate that underneath-blade bronze dagger-axes have different mineral sources. The lead isotope ratio 206 Pb/ 204 Pb of 18.3 can draw the conclusion to be used as one of the bases for judging that underneath-blade bronze dagger-axes originated in the Chengdu Plain or the Central Plains which was consistent with the typology. The southern China lead materials of underneath-blade bronze dagger-axes in the Ba-Shu and Central Plains style probably came from southern Sichuan; while the rest of underneath-blade bronze dagger-axes in the Central Plains style might use lead materials in the western Hunan-western Hubei area. The Shu culture which was represented by Shuangyuan Village Site in Chengdu Plain during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty had close cultural communication with the Central Plains and Chu cultures. This study reveals that Ba-Shu had a direct exchange of minerals or metal products with the Central Plains and Chu, as well as an imitation based on the identification of the foreign culture and the belief in the local Shu cultural traditions.

Abstract:An ancient and well-developed late Shu culture was discovered in the Sichuan Basin in southwest China. For a long time, the evolution of the resource utilization of the late Shu culture has been shrouded in mystery, and it is under considerable controversy when it comes to the relationship between the late Shu culture and the Chu culture of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Therefore, in this paper, bronze poleaxes with characteristics of different periods, which were excavated from the Shuangyuan cemetery of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty in the Chengdu Plain, were studied by archaeological typology, portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (pXRF), and multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). In contrast to previous studies, this paper achieves a further distinction among the mineral sources of a very short historical period within the long history of the late Shu culture by analyzing the local bronze poleaxes. The results show that the Shu ancestors used the same kind of lead material from the early Warring States Period to the early stage of the middle Warring States Period. However, the mineral sources of the late Shu culture underwent a significant shift in the late stage of middle Warring States Period, which was closely related to the historical background of cultural exchanges between Chu culture and Shu culture. This work indicates that the exchange between Shu and Chu gradually deepened over time during the Warring States Period.

Abstract:This paper probes into the provenance of material for the bronze vessels in Shang and Zhou Dynasties from some areas in China using Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer(ICP-AES)to analyze trace elements.The trace elements from bronze vessels were compared with those from ingot and copper pieces from Pre-Qin Dynastiy's mining and smelting sites such as Tonglüshan,Tongling,Nanling,Zhongtiaoshan and Zhaobishan.Our results reveal that the copper of the bronze vessels in Anhui Province came from ancient copper ores of the Middle and Lower reaches of Yangtze River and the copper of bronze vessels found in Western Liaoning Province and Houma came from the Dajing copper ores.Meanwhile,this research indicates trace elements Au,Ag,As,Sb,Bi,Se,Te,Co,Ni,Mo and Zn,etc.in copper ores are indicative of the provenance of material of the bronze vessels.It is feasible to determine the possible provenance of the bronze vessels on the basis of analysis of trace element in bronze vessels.

Abstract:Ouerping site, an important excavation archaeological site unearthed in 2017 in Jinzhong city, Shanxi province, China, dates back to the Warring States period. Metallographic, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy and energy dispersion-type X-ray fluorescence spectrometer analysis of the site’s iron artefacts revealed that they were made of two types of materials: hypereutectic white iron and cast iron annealed products. Among them, the cast iron is hypereutectic white iron, and the annealed products include decarburized cast iron, cast iron decarburized steel (wrought iron) and ductile cast iron. For the first time, ductile cast iron products were discovered in Shanxi. According to the age of each layer of the site, the craftsman has mastered the cast iron annealed and decarbonization technology since the middle of the Warring States period, and applied it to tools and weapons. Combined with the iron artefacts storage of the site and the construction of building foundations, the iron solid-decarburised production has reached a certain scale, played an important role in social and economic development. The site is rich in solid-decarburised products and has strong time continuity, and the study of them not only reveals the technical connotation of iron production in this area, but also provides important materials for studying the development of cast iron Processing technology and social development in Shanxi and even in ancient China.

Abstract:We herein report on an examination of the compositions of copper relics unearthed from the Guangfentou site in Jiangchuan, Yunnan, China. Scanning electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SED-EDS), metallographic microscopy, and lead isotope ratio analysis were used to analyze 20 metallurgical relics. The results indicated that the relics were either copper metal or copper slag. The copper metal was composed of either metallic copper or tin bronze, while the copper slags were either smelting slag or melting slag, with the melting slags being composed of refining or alloying slag. The Guangfentou site in the Jiangchuan county contains an extraordinarily complete set of bronze metallurgical relics from the Bronze Age of Yunnan. The processes involved in this site include smelting of sulfidic ores, refining of primary raw copper, bronze alloying, and bronze casting. This was an important metallurgical site in the ancient Dian Kingdom and has provided clues that will aid in efforts to reveal the origins of bronze smelting technologies and the sources of the copper ores used by the ancient Dian civilization.

Abstract:Six thin Chinese bronze chariot accessory sheets from Songjia cemetery in Shaanxi province were dated to the late Western Zhou dynasty (ninth to eighth centuries bce) and analysed for their elemental composition and motif techniques. The objects were cold worked and annealed with embossed motifs and carved lines. This is the only case of cold working and annealing with embossed motifs and carved lines in China; these techniques may have come from or been influenced by other cultures. These findings are important for revealing the development of the cold‐working, annealing techniques and relevant motif techniques in China.
