Abstract:"Pure poetry" theory is the core category of Western symbolic poetics, representing artists’ pursuit in perfect art. In the forming-process of Western "pure poetry" theory, Valery stands unique as a representative with his whole and systematic interpretations of "pure poetry" theory. In the 1920s and 1930s, Valery’s "pure poetry" theory received unusual attention from Chinese scholars, Liang Zongdai, Li Jianwu, Cao Baohua, Dai Wangshu introduced and translated his "pure poetry" theory to China, expecting with his "pure poetry" theory as reference to explore Chinese new poetry’s aim and destination, thus realizing Chinese new poetry’s return to art itself. However, during their absorption of "pure poetry" theory, they also manifested subject consciousness, giving obvious national characteristics to "pure poetry" theory and promoting its localization in China.
