Abstract:Dynamic epicardial mapping is an important tool in cardiac electrophysiology. This article brings forward a method for 3D dynamic modeling used in epicardial mapping system. Firstly, 3DMAX was used to create a 3D heart model and an .ase file was stored. Secondly, OpenGL was applied to display this model in user’s window interface. When electrodes and amplifiers sampled new data, the electrode which had the minimum euler distance to each vertex of 3D model was calculated, thus an interpolate triangle was formed by combining another two adjacent electrodes. The voltage value of each vertex was obtained by using a new linear interpolation based on grads calculation. This method was proved to be feasible in animal experiments. Electrical activity could be investigated directly in a cardiac cycle through this 3D model. This model can also reflect the conduction process of depolarization in complex arrhythmia such as atrial fibrillation. This method is appropriate for any real-time 3D dynamic field modeling, which has an array of regular measure points.

Abstract:Since present display technology is projecting 3D to 2D, people ' s eyes are deceived by the loss of spatial data. So it's a revolution for human vision to develop a real 3D display device. The monitor is based on emissive pad with 64*256 LED array. When rotated at a frequency of 10 Hertz, it shows real 3D images with pixels at their exact positions. The article presents a procedure that the software possesses 3D object and converts to volumetric 3D formatted data for this system. For simulating the phenomenon on PC, it also presents a program remodels the object based on OpenGL. An algorithm for faster processing and optimizing rendering speed is also given. The monitor provides real 3D scenes with free visual angle. It can be expected that the revolution will bring a strike on modern monitors and will lead to a new world for display technology.
Registering Myocardial Fiber Orientations with Heart Geometry Using Iterative Closest Points Algorithms

Abstract:Myocardial electrical excitation propagation is anisotropic, with the most rapid spread of current along the direction of the long axis of the fiber. Fiber orientation is also an important determinant of myocardial mechanics. So myocardial fiber orientations are very important to heart modeling and simulation. Accurately construction of myocardial fiber orientations, however, is still a challenge. The purpose of this paper is to construct a heart geometrical model with myocardial fiber orientations based on CT and 3D laser scanned pictures. The iterative closest points (ICP) algorithms were used to register the fiber orientations with the heart geometry.

Abstract:Cardiomechanics deals with the motion and functioning of the heart. How the heart performs as a pump depends largely on the contractile activity of its wall muscle, the myocardium. The mechanical properties of myocardial fibers depend highly on their fibrous structures and activity status. Considered the myocardial fiber orientation, a three-dimensional finite element mechanical model of human left ventricle is constructed based on composite theory and an electrical model of heart, and the computing issues of the active force and after-load are discussed. Finally the mechanical response of the left ventricle subjected to the normal active force is simulated, and the results are compared with solutions obtained from MR tagging images and those from other models. It proves that the given model can be used to study the mechanical function of the left ventricle, and it lays a good foundation for construction of virtual heart with electro-physiological and mechanical properties.

Abstract:This paper presents an algorithm for data interpolation and approximation used in the whole atria mapping. Multilevel B-splines are introduced to compute the whole atria surface through a set of irregularly spaced points and to draw the 3D isopotential map, which can reflect the conduction process of depolarization in complex arrhythmia such as atrial fibrillation.

Abstract:Based on our previous electrical heart model, an electromechanical biventricular model was constructed by means of composite material theory and the finite element method. And the 3-D motion of the right ventricular wall was simulated based on this model. The orientation of cardiac fibers and myocardial contractility were taken into consideration during simulation modeling. The propagation of electrical excitation was simulated using an electrical heart model, and the resulting active forces was used to calculate the ventricular wall motion. Regional deformation and Lagrangian strain tensors were calculated during systole. Displacements, minimum principal strains were used to describe the motion of the right ventricle. The simulation results are in good accordance with results obtained from MR tagging images reported in literatures. In addition, the results also show that although the maximum displacement occurs in the base of the heart, however, the maximum contraction occurs in the apex of the heart. Such result is very difficult to be obtained by means of animal experiment or human experiment. This study suggests that such electrophysiologic-mechanical biventricular models have the important significance to be used to assess the mechanical functions of the two ventricles.

Abstract:This paper describes an electrical model of the ventricles incorporating real geometry and motion. Cardiac geometry and motion is obtained from segmentations of multiple-slice MRI time sequences. A static heart model developed previously is deformed to match the observed geometry using a novel shape registration algorithm. The resulting electrocardiograms and body surface potential maps are compared to a static simulation in the resting heart. These results demonstrate that introducing motion into the cardiac model modifies the ECG during the T wave at peak contraction of the ventricles

Abstract:Dynamic epicardial mapping system is a useful instrument for studying electrophysiological characteristics of atrial fibrillation (AF). It is important to develop an optimal therapy for AF. The purpose of this research is to show the electrical activity on the epicardial surface of atrium and therefore find the appropriate technique or ablation procedures to prevent AF. It emphasizes on dynamic three-dimensional (3D) holograph based on whole-atrial epicardial mapping. A system was designed to display successively either sampling waveform or the pattern of depolarization distribution. 64 unipolar electrodes arranged in eight flexible patches were adopted to detect signals. They can be located respectively on the surface of posterior and anterior LA or RA, and pulmonary veins (4 patches). Each electrode patch was designed to adaptable to the corresponding epicardial surface of canine atrium. Animal tests were operated on ten dogs in which chronic AF had been induced. Each 20-second sampling data during sinus or AF rhythm were recorded and stored for analysis. Multilevel B-splines were applied to compute the whole atria surface through a set of irregularly spaced point. Thus the 3D isopotential map was drawn to reflect the conduction of depolarization wave dynamically during AF. The propagation of electrical activity was different during sinus and AF rhythm. The results demonstrate that the system could find the pathway of AF through 3D dynamic exhibition. Nevertheless, 64 sites are not enough to detect the electrical activity thoroughly. A multi-site epicardial mapping system more than 128 channels is being developed for more exact mapping.
Three-dimensional Motion Analysis of the Right Ventricle Using an Electromechanical Biventricular Model

Abstract:Previous mechanical heart models were mainly constructed for analysis of the left ventricle behavior, and the right ventricle was almost not included because of its complex geometry structure. The motion of the healthy right ventricle and its alteration due to disease are not currently well understood. In this paper, a 3-D finite element biventricular model with real geometric shape and fiber structure has been constructed and the right ventricular wall motion and deformation during systole phase have been simulated. The results show that: 1) The right ventricular free wall moves towards the septum, and at the same time, the base and middle of the free wall move towards the apex, which reduce the volume of right ventricle; 2) The minimum principal strain is largest at the apex, then at the middle of free wall, and its direction is in the approximate direction of the epicardial muscle fibers. The results are in good accordance with solutions obtained from MR tagging images.
Implementation of real-time isopotential map in epicardial mapping system

Abstract:Isopotential map of cardiac are commonly used to study the spread of excitation in the heart. In this study, we propose a method for isopotential map construction used in realtime epicardial mapping. Firstly, heart contour was extracted from canine CT images and reconstructed to a three-dimensional mesh model of the heart. Secondly, OpenGL and MFC were used to display the 3D model. Then the positions of electrodes on the model were calculated semi-automatically using a central angle dividing method. When new data sampled by Epicardial Mapping System was transferred to the computer and filtered by an adaptive least mean square filter, Kriging interpolation was employed to calculate potentials at unmeasured region. The method was theoretical feasible in animal experiments. Results indicated that isopotential maps in this paper could specifically reflect the propagation process of excitement during both sinus rhythm and complex arrhythmia for instance atrial fibrillation.

Abstract:In order to have an intuitive grasp of atrial fibrillation model using ECG mapping technique, we started from animals' CT images, extracted contours of torso surface and epicardium with Snake model, reconstructed three-dimensional models of torso surface and epicardium with triangular patches. Using interpolation based on Delaunay triangulation, signals (acquired from animal experiments) of normal sinus rhythm (NSR) and atrial fibrillation (AF) were displayed in 3D perspective. And the important process in cardiac electrical activity, such as the start and ending parts of spontaneous AF, could be clearly observed.

Abstract:Many heart anatomy models have been developed to study the electrophysiological properties of the human heart. However, none of them includes the geometry of the whole human heart. In this study, an anatomically detailed mathematical model of the human heart was firstly reconstructed from the computed tomography images. In the reconstructed model, the atria consisted of atrial muscles, sinoatrial node, crista terminalis, pectinate muscles, Bachmann’s bundle, intercaval bundles, and limbus of the fossa ovalis. The atrioventricular junction included the atrioventricular node and atrioventricular ring, and the ventricles had ventricular muscles, His bundle, bundle branches, and Purkinje network. The epicardial and endocardial myofiber orientations of the ventricles and one layer of atrial myofiber orientation were then measured. They were calculated using linear interpolation technique and minimum distance algorithm, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first anatomically-detailed human heart model with corresponding experimentally measured fibers orientation. In addition, the whole heart excitation propagation was simulated using a monodomain model. The simulated normal activation sequence agreed well with the published experimental findings.

Abstract:This paper refers to a new design to show epicardial electrical activity visually and comprehensively. With emulation modeling technology and linear interpolation, electrical activity on the epicardial surface can be displayed directly, precisely and continuously. Simulation tests and animal tests proved that the system could describe the cardiac activation vividly, just like weather nephogram. The proposed method may make this epicardial mapping system an important tool in studying cardiac electrophysiology. © 2008 IEEE.

Abstract:Isopleth graphic is a denotation of discrete data, widely used in many fields of engineering and technology such as water conservancy, civil engineering, geological engineering, petroleum reconnaissance etc. Epicardial mapping is a method of observing, detecting and analyzing cardiac electropotential signals with precision. Doctors can clearly acquire information of blood-supply in the ischemia myocardium through real-time potential map or activation map during the bridging operation of coronary artery. In this paper, we describe the design of Graphic-display software based on VC + + 64 epicardial mapping system, which includes the algorithm for keypoint-distilling, multi-channel ECG signals detecting, drawing of the isoline etc; and the two methods of the isoline' s drawing are introduced emphatically: one is based on grid data and contour line tracing is necessary, then join each separate point and mark the data; the other is also based on grid data but contour line tracing is unnecessary, which just needs partiting the filed and filling the small blocks with diverse colors.
[3D Virtual Endoscopy of Heart].

Abstract:In this paper, we present a virtual endoscopy (VE) for diagnosis of heart diseases, which is proved efficient and affordable, easy to popularize for viewing the interior of the heart. The dual source CT (DSCT) data were used as primary data in our system. The 3D structure of virtual heart was reconstructed with 3D texture mapping technology based on graphics processing unit (GPU), and could be displayed dynamically in real time. When we displayed it in real time, we could not only observe the inside of the chambers of heart but also examine from the new angle of view by the 3D data which were already clipped according to doctor's desire. In the pattern of observation, we used both mutual interactive mode and auto mode. In the auto mode, we used Dijkstra Algorithm which treated the 3D Euler distance as weighting factor to find out the view path quickly, and, used view path to calculate the four chamber plane.

Abstract:Although 3D heart and torso model with realistic geometry are basis of simulation computation in LFX virtual cardiac model, the simulation results are mostly output in 2D format. To solve such a problem and enhance the virtual reality of LFX virtual cardiac model, the methods of voxel mapping and vertex project mapping were presented. With these methods, Excitation Isochrone Map (EIM) was mapped from heart model with realistic geometry to real Visible Man heart model, and Body Surface Potential Map (BSPM) was mapped from torso model with realistic geometry to real Visible Man body surface. By visualizing in the 4Dview, which is a real-time 3D medical image visualization platform, the visualization results of EIM and BSPM simulation data before and after mapping were also provided. According to the visualization results, the output format of EIM and BSPM simulation data of LFX Virtual Cardiac Model were extended from 2D to 4D (spatio-temporal) and from cardiac model with realistic geometry to real cardiac model, and more realistic and effective simulation was achieved.

Abstract:Congenital heart defect is a leading cause of children mortality. Two-dimensional echocardiography is a safe and noninvasive diagnostic tool and two-dimensional images can be reconstructed to a three-dimensional model. However, for some complex congenital heart diseases, the visualization of three-dimensional cardiac tissue structure alone is not enough.Visualization of Wood flow patterns in a human heart is important to evaluate cardiac disease of patients. Color flow imaging is a well-established ultrasound mode and very valuable for visualizing the distribution of blood flow in a specific region of interest. However, blood flow patterns in a human heart have three-dimensional complex structure and change dynamically, but the output of color flow imaging is usually presented as a two-dimensional image on a cross section of a heart. The authors make use of an echocardiography system to acquire the data which include cardiac tissue structure and blood flow patterns, and construct an interactive visualization system for the three-dimensional heart and blood flow. With the visualization system, which possesses interactivity and a changeable view, users can easily understand the inner cardiac structure and blood flow in the heart.The images that we use are not only from actual patient data, but also from isolated porcine hearts and hearts of living dogs.

Abstract:Although 3D heart and torso model with realistic geometry are the basis of simulation computation in LFX Virtual Cardiac Model, the simulation results are mostly output in 2D format. Voxel mapping method is presented to solve this problem and extend the function of LFX Virtual Cardiac Model. Excitation Isochrone Map (EIM), one of the most important simulation results, was mapped from cardiac model with realistic geometry to real Visible Man cardiac model, then the EIM simulation data before and after mapping were visualized in the 4DView which is a real-time 3D medical image visualization platform. With this method, the output format of EIM simulation data of LFX Virtual Cardiac Model was extended from 2D to 4D (time is the 4th dimension) and from cardiac model with realistic geometry to real cardiac model. According to the EIM simulation data visualization results before and after mapping, the LFX virtual cardiac model shows its characteristics with more realistic and effective simulation.

Abstract:The cardiac physiome model has been proven to be useful for cardiac simulation, and has been more recently utilized to medical image analysis. To perform individualized analysis, structural images are necessary to provide subject-specific cardiac geometries. Although finite element methods have been extensively used for the spatial discretization of the myocardium, their complicated meshing procedures and element-based interpolation functions often result in algorithms which are either easy to implement but numerically inaccurate, or accurate but labor-intensive. In consequence, we have adopted the meshfree platform which provides element-free approximations for computational cardiology. Complicated volume meshing procedures are excluded, and no re-meshing is needed for improving spatial accuracy when deformation occurs. Furthermore, the polynomial bases for spatial approximation are not limited by the element structure. As a result, the meshfree platform is more adaptive to different cardiac geometries and thus beneficial to individualized analysis. In this paper, the cardiac physiome model tailored for medical image analysis is presented with its detailed 3D implementation using the meshfree methods. Experiments were performed to compare the meshfree methods with the finite element methods, and simulations were done on a cubical object to investigate the local behaviors of the cardiac physiome model, and on a human heart geometry extracted from a magnetic resonance image to verify its physiological plausibility.

Abstract:While finite element methods have been extensively used for computational cardiology, the complicated and computationally expensive meshing procedures largely increase the difficulties of improving numerical accuracy. Furthermore, as the complexity of the element structure increases with the order of polynomial can be handled, the finite element procedures are either simple but numerically inaccurate or accurate but labor intensive. In view of these problems, we adopt the meshfree methods for computational cardiology. Using the meshfree methods, the heart is represented by a set of nodes distributed in the myocardium without any mesh, thus spatial refinements only involve distribution of extra nodes to the area of interest. Furthermore, as the order of polynomial is not limited by elements, it can be increased with relatively ease. These are desirable features as they provide the flexibility for improving numerical accuracies. In this paper, the simulation of the cardiac electromechanical dynamics using the meshfree methods will be introduced. Experiments have been done on a cubical object to provide an insight into the electromechanical dynamics, and also on a canine heart model to show the physiological plausibility of the simulation.
