Abstract:This paper makes an empirical analysis with The 2009 World Development Report's 3D framework which is defined by Density,Distance,Division, measured by economic density, the distance from the coast, the distance from provincial capital and domestic market integration, for the explanation of spatial labor productivity disparities in a panel of 2004-2009 Chinese cities.Control the variables of capital stock per capita and human capital,we build the random effect panel data models, and use IV and GMM estimation techniques, thus offering an alternative methodological treatment of the inherent endogeneity problem. The result presents evidence of a significant positive role for economic density in determining spatial labor productivity disparities, while a negative role for the distance from the coast and provincial capital. The evidence of a role for domestic market division is more complicated. We also find the difference of 3D's effects on labor productivity among east, central and west.
