Abstract:A crossed-beam facility for electron impact ionization of ions was constructed. The absolute cross sections for single ionization of Ar+ &nd Cl+ ions at electron energies ranging from 30 to 500 eV were measured. The uncertainty is about +/- 13%.

Abstract:Single ionization of argon by 195-eV electron impact is studied in an experiment, where the absolute triple-differential cross sections are presented as three-dimensional electron emission images for a series of kinematic conditions. Thereby a comprehensive set of experimental data for electron-impact ionization of a many-electron system is produced to provide a benchmark for comparison with theoretical predictions. Theoretical models using a hybrid first-order and second-order distorted-wave Born plus $R$-matrix approach are employed to compare their predictions with the experimental data. While the relative shape of the calculated cross section is generally in reasonable agreement with experiment, the magnitude appears to be the most significant problem with the theoretical treatment for the conditions studied in the present work. This suggests that the most significant challenge in the further development of theory for this process may lie in the reproduction of the absolute scale rather than the angular dependence of the cross section.

Abstract:The single-electron and double-electron detachment cross sections of Cl- in collision with inert gas atoms (He-Xe) have been measured by the growth rate method. The incident negative ions' energies are from 5 to 30 keV. It is found that the single-electron detachment cross sections become greater and greater when the target atoms change from helium to xenon. However, double-electron detachment cross sections show a more complicated relationship with the target atom changing. The results of this work have been compared with the previous data, and a model based on energy division is used to interpret the trends of cross sections.

Abstract:Low-energy (${E}_{0}$ $=$ 70.8 eV) electron-impact single ionization of a 3$p$ electron in argon has been studied experimentally and theoretically. Our measurements are performed using the so-called reaction microscope technique, which can cover nearly a full 4\ensuremath{\pi} solid angle for the emission of a secondary electron with energy below 15 eV and projectile scattering angles ranging from \ensuremath{-}8\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} to \ensuremath{-}30\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}. The measured cross sections are internormalized across all scattering angles and ejected energies. Several theoretical models were employed to predict the triple-differential cross sections (TDCSs). They include a standard distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA), a modified version to account for the effects of postcollision interaction (DWBA-PCI), a hybrid second-order distorted-wave plus $R$-matrix (DWB2-RM) method, and the recently developed $B$-spline $R$-matrix with pseudostates (BSR) approach. The relative angular dependence of the BSR cross sections is generally found to be in reasonable agreement with experiment, and the importance of the PCI effect is clearly visible in this low-energy electron-impact ionization process. However, there remain significant differences in the magnitude of the calculated and the measured TDCSs.

Abstract:As a further test of advanced theoretical methods to describe electron-impact single-ionization processes in complex atomic targets, we extended our recent work on $\mathrm{Ne}(2p$) ionization [X. Ren, S. Amami, O. Zatsarinny, T. Pfl\"uger, M. Weyland, W. Y. Baek, H. Rabus, K. Bartschat, D. Madison, and A. Dorn, Phys. Rev. A 91, 032707 (2015)] to $\mathrm{Ar}(3p$) ionization at the relatively low incident energy of ${E}_{0}=66$ eV. The experimental data were obtained with a reaction microscope, which can cover nearly the entire $4\ensuremath{\pi}$ solid angle for the secondary electron emission. We present experimental data for detection angles of 10, 15, and ${20}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ for the faster of the two outgoing electrons as a function of the detection angle of the secondary electron with energies of 3, 5, and 10 eV, respectively. Comparison with theoretical predictions from a $B$-spline $R$-matrix (BSR) with pseudostates approach and a three-body distorted-wave (3DW) approach, for detection of the secondary electron in three orthogonal planes as well as the entire solid angle, shows overall satisfactory agreement between experiment and the BSR results, whereas the 3DW approach faces difficulties in predicting some of the details of the angular distributions. These findings are different from our earlier work on $\mathrm{Ne}(2p$), where both the BSR and 3DW approaches yielded comparable levels of agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:The single electron impact ionization cross sections of Ar+, Kr+, In+ and Ge+ were measured on the improved electron-ion impact apparatus at Fudan University. The Ar+, Kr+ and In+ experimental results are in good agreement with data from other laboratories. The cross section of Ge+ was measured for the first time. The experimental results indicate that the indirect ionization process gives a larger contribution to the total ionization cross section of In+, as compared to the other three targets. The experimental data were compared with our Distorted-Wave-Born-Exchange-Approximation (DWBEA) calculation, the Lotz formula, and Configuration-Averaged-Distorted-Wave (CADW) calculations.

Abstract:We present new experimental and theoretical cross sections for electron-impact single ionization of Xe and Xe ions, and double ionization of Xe , Xe and Xe ions for collision energies from the respective ionization thresholds up to 3500 eV. The calculations use the fully relativistic subconfiguration-averaged distorted-wave approach and, partly, the more detailed level-to-level distorted wave method. We find that, unlike in previous work, our theoretical cross sections agree with our experimental ones within the experimental uncertainties, except for the near-threshold double-ionization cross sections. We attribute this remaining discrepancy to the neglect of direct-double ionization in the present theoretical treatment.

Abstract:Electron-impact excitation integral cross sections play an important role in understanding the energy transfer processes in many applied physics. Practical applications require integral cross sections in a wide collision energy range from the excitation threshold to several keV. The recently developed BE-scaling method is able to meet the demands of integral cross sections for dipole-allowed transitions while the prerequisite relies on the accurate generalized oscillator strengths. Fast electron and x-ray scatterings are the conventional experimental techniques to approach the generalized oscillator strengths, and the joint study by both methods can provide credible cross-checks. The validated generalized oscillator strengths can then be used to extrapolate optical oscillator strengths by fitting the data with the Lassettre formula. The fitted curve also enables the integration of generalized oscillator strengths over the whole momentum transfer region to obtain the BE-scaled integral excitation cross sections. Here, experimental measurements by both fast electron and x-ray scattering of argon and carbon dioxide are reviewed. The integral cross sections for some low-lying states are derived from the cross-checked generalized oscillator strengths for the first time. Abstract:Electron Capture and transfer ionization by Ar(8–12)+ in collisions with argon atoms were studied by using the position sensitive and time-of-flight techniques. Some of the measured projectile charge changing cross sections (σq,q−k) and phenomenological cross sections (σrq,q−k) are reported in this paper. The measured cross sections are compared with the predictions of the molecular Coulombic overbarrier model by considering the autoionization decay and electron evaporation of multiply excited states in projectiles and recoil ions respectively.

Abstract:We present the absolute triple differential cross section (TDCS) for single ionization of Ne(2p) at an impact energy of 599.6 eV and Ar(3p) at 195 eV. The role of the postcollision interaction (PCI) is studied using a high-order distorted-wave Born approximation model with a continuum distorted-waves expansion. Both the second-and third-order effects are considered in the present calculations, and the third-order distorted wave Born approximation model is reported in the (e,2e) reaction. The calculated results show satisfactory agreement with experimental data. The magnitude of the absolute TDCS is enhanced by a factor 2-3 when the strength factor y of the PCI amplitude is summarized just from 0 to 2. This proves that the PCI plays an important role in the absolute TDCS of the (e,2e) reaction in the intermediate-energy region.

Abstract:Charge transfer processes for Ar~3+ on Ar collisions at 27 keV,45 keV and 66 keV have been studied,and absolute cross sections for each channel have been obtained by normalizing to the cross sections reported by Bliman,Dousson,et al.Experiment shows that electron capture is the dominant process;transfer ionization contributions,however,can not be neglected.Further more,the cross sections for each channel found to be independent on projectile energy.The experimental results have also been compared with theoretical calculations,which are based on the MCBM(Molecular Coulombic overBarrier Model) considering auto-ionization.The model calculations predict there are no transfer ionization contributions,but experiments found that transfer ionization contributions are not negligible.For single-and double-electron capture,the experimental results are in reasonable agreement with the MCBM calculations,but MCBM predicts larger cross sections,and for triple-electron capture,the result of MCBM is one order bigger than the measured value.
Effects of Environment on the Electron-Impact Ionization Dynamics of Argon Clusters

Abstract:Ionization of the 3p orbital of argon (Ar) monomers, dimers (Ar2), and small-size Ar clusters (Arn, (n) ti 15) is investigated for 90-eV electron impact. Experimentally, the three-dimensional momentum vectors of the two outgoing electrons and the residual ion are measured in triple coincidence, as is the mass-over-charge ratio of the ion, using a reaction microscope that covers a large part of the final-state phase space. The triple-differential cross sections (TDCS) are obtained for almost the full solid angle of the ejected electron, in which the data for Ar monomers are well reproduced by B-spline R-matrix calculations for ejected electron energies of 3 eV, 5 eV, and 10 eV, and projectile scattering angles of 10 degrees and 20 degrees. Compared to the Ar monomer, the cross sections for Ar2 and Arn exhibit effects due to the neighboring atoms by the suppression of binary and recoil lobes and the enhanced electron emission out of the projectile scattering plane. These environmental effects are further investigated using a multicenter three-distorted-wave theory, which can generate the TDCSs for electron-impact ionization of Ar2. These studies reveal an important role of multicenter scattering reactions on the ionization dynamics of Ar clusters. Moreover, a two-center interference is not found in the TDCS of Ar2. This is interpreted as due to the involvement of orbitals with both gerade and ungerade symmetries in the ionization process.

Electron-impact multiple ionization of Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe

Abstract:This work describes the multiple ionization cross sections of rare gases by electron-impact. We pay special attention to the high energy region (0.1–10 keV) where the direct ionization is a minor contribution and the post-collisional electron emission dominates the final target charge state. We report here electron-impact single to sextuple ionization cross sections and total ionization cross sections including direct and post-collisional processes, even in the total values. We use the continuum distorted wave and the first Born approximations adapted to describe light-particle impact, i.e. energy, mass and trajectory corrections are incorporated, the latter by considering the electron-target potential and by using the Abel transformation. Auger-type post-collisional contributions are included in the multinomial expansion through experimental branching ratios after single ionization events. Tabulations of these experimental branching ratios for all the orbitals of the four targets are included. Present results are compared with the large amount of electron-impact experimental data available. We have obtained a good description of the multiple-ionization measurements at high energies, where the post-collisional ionization dominates. At intermediate energies, our theoretical results show the correct tendency, with the electron-impact ionization cross sections being far below the proton-impact ones.

Abstract:An experimental procedure is reported, which provides the absolute triple differential cross sections (ATDCSs) for electron-impact ionization of large (bio)molecules. This type of measurements represents the most stringent tests for new or existing theoretical models. We will use this procedure to test the accuracy of the best currently available theoretical models for the problems of electron-impact (65 eV) ionization of the molecules water $({\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O})$, tetrahydrofuran $({\mathrm{C}}_{4}{\mathrm{H}}_{8}\mathrm{O})$, and their hydrogen-bonded dimer ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}{\mathrm{C}}_{4}{\mathrm{H}}_{8}\mathrm{O}$. The cross sections were calculated using the molecular three-body distorted-wave (M3DW) model, the multicenter three-distorted-wave (MCTDW) approach, and the multicenter three-distorted-wave using the Ward-Macek approximation (MCTDW-WM). When compared to the new experimental ATDCS results which cover almost the full solid angle of the ejected electron and a broad range of ejected electron energies and projectile scattering angles, it is found that the data for water are generally well reproduced by the M3DW model, while strong deviations in the absolute magnitude of the cross sections are found for the MCTDW. The MCTDW-WM model provides improved agreement over the MCTDW. These theoretical models, however, become less adequate for the ATDCS of ${\mathrm{C}}_{4}{\mathrm{H}}_{8}\mathrm{O}$, in particular concerning the absolute magnitude. Furthermore, we find that a water environment can play a noticeable role for the ionization dynamics in the case of hydrated molecules.

Abstract:We report an experimental and theoretical investigation of electron-impact single ionization of the highest occupied molecular orbital 1t2 and the next highest occupied molecular orbital 2a1 states of CH4 at an incident electron energy of 250 eV. Triple differential cross sections measured in two different laboratories were compared with results calculated within the molecular 3-body distorted wave and generalized Sturmian function theoretical models. For ionization of the 1t2 state, the binary peak was observed to have a single maximum near the momentum transfer direction that evolved into a double peak for increasing projectile scattering angles, as has been seen for ionization of atomic p-states. A detailed investigation of this evolution was performed. As expected because of its s-type character, for ionization of the 2a1 state, only a single binary peak was observed. Overall, good agreement was found between experiment and theory.

Abstract:The cross sections of ultra-soft x-ray bremsstrahlung in at electron scattering by Ar, Kr and Xe are theoretically calculated. The results are consistent with the absolute values of the differential cross sections measured by Gnatchenko et al [Phys. Rev. A 80, 022707 (2009)] for scattering electrons with an energy of 600 eV on these atoms.
