Abstract:The smart grid vision is to revitalize the electric power network by leveraging the proven sensing, communication, control, and machine learning technologies to address pressing issues related to security, stability, environmental impact, market diversity, and novel power technologies. Significant effort and investment have been committed to architect the necessary infrastructure by installing advanced metering systems and establishing data communication networks throughout the grid. Signal processing methodologies are expected to play a major role in this context by providing intelligent algorithms that fully exploit such pervasive sensing and control capabilities to realize the vision and manifold anticipated benefits of the smart grid. In this feature article, analytical background and relevance of signal processing tools to power systems are delineated, while introducing major challenges and opportunities for the future grid engineering. From grid informatics to inference for monitoring and optimization tools, energy-related issues are shown to offer a fertile ground for signal processing growth whose time has come.

Abstract:The aim of this special issue was to collect from academic and industrial players, tutorials and surveys related to the latest smart grid and energy related technologies and architectures. Contributions on major developments and updates on smart grid systems are considered. We received a total of 15 submissions from which five were finally accepted for this special issue. The papers span from smart grid communications to building energy efficiency, smart metering, information management, and co-simulation of power and communication systems. Each of the five article is briefly summarized.

Abstract:C ITIES and urban regions are becoming smarter thanks to the recent developments of digital technologies, smart control, data analytics, and optimization concepts. A smart city is equipped with different electronic elements employed by several applications. The utilization of the aforementioned technologies and approaches can furnish intelligent management of energy distribution and consumption in heterogeneous circumstances. Intelligent nodes have some abilities, such as sensing and networking, which raise the possibility of optimal scheduling of energy suppliers. Digitalization can result in the generation of some services that have an interaction with the environment. Hence, it could introduce some opportunities for contextualization and geoawareness. Furthermore, collective intelligence will improve the processes of decision making and empower the citizens. One of the main features of a smart city is due to its ability of favoring customers’ responsiveness and efficiency decisions. A broad range of challenging problems and issues related to the area of smart energy cities and regions is, therefore, being addressed within this Special Section on “Methods and Systems for a Smart Energy City” of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS. Recent research and technology development trends, methods, and corresponding results are being covered by the included contributions of this Special Section, which is technically supported by the Technical Committee on Smart Grids (TC-SG) of the IEEE INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS SOCIETY. In a strict peer-review process supported by highly reputed international experts from the domain, finally, 27 excellent contributions out of around 60 submissions have been selected for publication in this Special Section. They address a wide range of challenging and interesting topics in the domain of smart energy cities, which can be mainly grouped into six clusters related to the following: 1) energy management and optimization problems; 2) demand response approaches; 3) energy market concepts; 4) microgrid control; 5) energy storage systems applications; 6) metering and sensor technology. Table I provides a brief overview of the assignment of the papers to the aforementioned clusters. In the following, the main content and contributions of these papers are briefly summarized in order to give the readers guidance through the content of this Special Issue. Abstract:The integration of distributed energy resources (DER) into the smart grid through digitalization has transformed the power grid into a more decentralized system, enhancing energy efficiency and resilience during significant catastrophes. However, the integration of a large number of DERs into the transmission and distribution networks poses reliability challenges due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. To tackle this, smart grids have been using advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and Internet of Things (IoT) devices for over two decades to improve grid observability and enable near-real-time forecasting of continent-wide anomalies. Cloud-edge-end orchestrated computing can achieve hierarchical management and innovative operational strategies, such as multi-level control and optimization of all-grid-level DERs, voltage and frequency regulation using phasor measurement units (PMU), and special protection schemes (SPS) to detect and prevent potential faults or large-scale cyber-attacks.

Abstract:The overall objective of this IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) Special Issue on high-frequency-link power-conversion systems is, therefore, to bring out the highlights of the ongoing world-wide activities in this area of advanced research to expose, analyze, and resolve the critical research and developmental challenges. Abstract:Smart grids (SGs) are reforming towards utilizing massive data for operations and services. During this reform, the information and communication technologies (ICTs) play a critical role, especially for the computing model, which determines how data analytics in SG can be executed. Edge computing (EC), a novel computing paradigm innovation, has high potential to help with the digitization of SG. This paper seeks to provide a comprehensive review of interdisciplinary research on EC applications in SG. First, an in-depth analysis of EC, including the definition, architectures, characteristics, and key enabling technologies is conducted from the perspective of SG application requirements. Afterward, this paper systematically explores application scenarios of EC in SG based on its characteristics. Beyond that, the synergistic effect of the integration of EC and SG is also assessed: SG not only benefits from EC but also supports EC to become sustainable. Challenges and open questions are then investigated.

Abstract:Optimization of energy consumption in future intelligent energy networks (or Smart Grids) will be based on grid-integrated near-real-time communications between various grid elements in generation, transmission, distribution and loads. This paper discusses some of the challenges and opportunities of communications research in the areas of smart grid and smart metering. In particular, we focus on some of the key communications challenges for realizing interoperable and future-proof smart grid/metering networks, smart grid security and privacy, and how some of the existing networking technologies can be applied to energy management. Finally, we also discuss the coordinated standardization efforts in Europe to harmonize communications standards and protocols.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for electrical data analysis, close proximity of computational resources to the terminal side has become a priority in modern power systems considering extant weaknesses with regard to operational efficiency, data security and the increasing burden of the cloud. Nevertheless, smart meters lacks local resources as modern terminals of smart grids. On the other hand, the alternative solutions based on edge computing may be inadequate in flexibility. To this end, a device aiming to enable terminal-side intelligence for smart meters is proposed in this work. First the functional design of the device is elaborated and a prototype of it is then introduced. Finally, two typical applications of this device are illustrated respectively. In addition to the traditional functions of smart meters, the proposed device is endowed with the capability of local computing whereby it has broad application prospects in the future.

Abstract:Electric power networks are experiencing significant changes as a result of widespread adoption of power electronics (PE)-based apparatuses. Power electronics converters are substantially different from synchronous machines which have been used during decades. The different nature of power electronics converters includes some limitations (like very limited overload capability and available inertia) and also some important advantages (like total controllability) which require to completely revise and restructure the way we address the design and analysis of power systems. PE-based converters are present at the generation, transmission, and distribution levels. In the field of power transmission and distribution, HVDC and FACTS technologies have helped to expand network power transfer capability and to increase operation flexibilities over the past 30 plus years. In recent years, more creative (or impactful) innovations in power electronics based T&D apparatus have been emerging. Examples are VSC based HVDC links, PE-based fault current limiters, and solid state transformers. In parallel, various novel PE-application concepts have been proposed and some have found commercial applications. They include, for example, smart wires, electric springs, ground fault neutralizers, soft-open switches, PE-assisted transformers, grid edge PE devices and PE-enabled active protection schemes. As the future power systems will be increasingly populated by power electronics, there is also a need to develop new knowledge on how to understand, analyze and engineer modern and future power systems.

Abstract:The genesis of early power systems and electric power grids during the past 130 years was enabled by automation and control of electromechanical machinery and power delivery networks. Today's end-to-end power and energy systems (from fuel source to end use) fundamentally depend on embedded and often an overlaid systems of sensors, computation, communication, control and optimization. There are even more opportunities and challenges in today's devices and systems, as well as in the emerging modern power systems – ranging from dollars, watts, emissions, standards, and more – at nearly every scale of sensing and control. Recent policies combined with potential for technological innovations and business opportunities, have attracted a high level of interest in smart grids. The potential for a highly distributed system with a high penetration of intermittent sources poses opportunities and challenges. Any complex dynamic infrastructure network typically has many layers, decision-making units and is vulnerable to various types of disturbances. Effective, intelligent, distributed control is required that would enable parts of the networks to remain operational and even automatically reconfigure in the event of local failures or threats of failure.This presentation provides an overview of smart grids and recent advances in distributed sensing, modeling, and control, particularly at both the high-voltage power grid and at consumer level. Such advances may contribute toward the development of an effective, intelligent, distributed control of power system networks with a focus on addressing distributed sensing, computation, estimation, controls and dynamical systems challenges and opportunities ahead.

Abstract:The future smart grid is envisioned as a large-scale cyber-physical system encompassing advanced power, communications, control, and computing technologies. In order to accommodate these technologies, it will have to build on solid mathematical tools that can ensure an efficient and robust operation of such heterogeneous and large-scale cyber-physical systems. In this context, this paper is an overview on the potential of applying game theory for addressing relevant and timely open problems in three emerging areas that pertain to the smart grid: micro-grid systems, demand-side management, and communications. In each area, the state-of-the-art contributions are gathered and a systematic treatment, using game theory, of some of the most relevant problems for future power systems is provided. Future opportunities for adopting game theoretic methodologies in the transition from legacy systems toward smart and intelligent grids are also discussed. In a nutshell, this article provides a comprehensive account of the application of game theory in smart grid systems tailored to the interdisciplinary characteristics of these systems that integrate components from power systems, networking, communications, and control.

Abstract:Abstract: Power grid is one of the most important manifestations of the modern civilization and the engine of it where it is described as a digestive system of the civil life. It is a structure has three main functions: generation, transmission lines, distribution. This concept was appropriate for a century. However, the beginning of the twenty-first century brought dramatic changes on different domains: media, human growth, economic, environmental, political, and technical etc. Smart grid is a sophisticated structure including cyber and physical bodies hence it reinforces the sustainability, the energy management, the capability of integration with microgrids, and exploiting the renewable energy resources. The quantum leap of smart grid is related to the advanced communication networks that deal with the cyber part. Moreover, the communication networks of smart grid offer attractive capabilities such as monitoring, control, and protection at the level of real time. The wireless communication techniques in integration frame are promised solution to compensate the requirements of smart grid designing such as wireless local area networks, worldwide interoperability for microwave access, long term evolution, and narrowband- internet of things. These technologies could provide high capacity, flexibility, low-cost maintenance for smart grid. However, the multi-interfaces in smart grid may exploit by persons or agencies to implement different types of cyber-attacks may lead to dangerous damage. This research paper reviews the up-to-date researches in the field of smart grid to handle the new trends and topics in one frame in order to offer integration vision in this vital section. It concentrates on the section of communication networks the mainstay of smart grid. This paper discusses the challenging and requirements of adopting the wireless communication technologies and delves deeply into literature review to devise and suggest solutions to compensate the impairments efficiently. Moreover, it explores the cyber security that representing the real defiant to implement the concept of smart grid safely.

Abstract:Nowadays, the main grid is facing several challenges related to the integration of renewable energy resources, deployment of grid-level energy storage devices, deployment of new usages such as the electric vehicle, massive usage of power electronic devices at different electric grid stages and the inter-connection with microgrids and prosumers. To deal with these challenges, the concept of a smart, fault-tolerant, and self-healing power grid has emerged in the last few decades to move towards a more resilient and efficient global electrical network. The smart grid concept implies a bi-directional flow of power and information between all key energy players and requires smart information technologies, smart sensors, and low-latency communication devices. Moreover, with the increasing constraints, the power grid is subjected to several disturbances, which can evolve to a fault and, in some rare circumstances, to catastrophic failure. These disturbances include wiring issues, grounding, switching transients, load variations, and harmonics generation. These aspects justify the need for real-time condition monitoring of the power grid and its subsystems and the implementation of predictive maintenance tools. Hence, researchers in industry and academia are developing and implementing power systems monitoring approaches allowing pervasive and effective communication, fault diagnosis, disturbance classification and root cause identification. Specifically, a focus is placed on power quality monitoring using advanced signal processing and machine learning approaches for disturbances characterization. Even though this review paper is not exhaustive, it can be considered as a valuable guide for researchers and engineers who are interested in signal processing approaches and machine learning techniques for power system monitoring and grid-disturbance classification purposes.
