Abstract:Abstract Background: In the context of implementing the "Three-Child" policy and promoting urban-rural integration, has the fertility intentions of women of childbearing age in Liaoning Province changed? What are the main influencing factors impacting their fertility choices? Are there more people who "don't want to have children" or "are afraid to have children"? Under the multiple push and pull forces of policy intervention, cultural change, and rational choice, which side are their fertility intentions more inclined towards? Methods: Through a sample survey of 1,104 urban women of childbearing age in four cities in Liaoning province (Shenyang, Dalian, Fuxin, and Fushun), the fertility intentions and influencing factors of this group were statistically described using cross-tabulation and multiple regression models, and in-depth interviews were conducted with 24 typical cases. Results: About 10% of urban women of childbearing age shifted from "never considering having a third child" to "considering having a third child"; less than 10% of urban women of childbearing age explicitly stated "they would definitely have a third child"; more than 70% of urban women of childbearing age explicitly stated, "they would not consider having a third child". The factors that significantly influence fertility intentions are subjective, such as the level of concern regarding children’s impact on freedom and quality of life, opinion of three child policy, and level of traditional values regarding childbirth; the less obvious factors are objective, such as average monthly income, years of education, migration experience. Conclusions: First, the number intentions from strong to weak, are 2 children, 1 child, and 3 children. Second, the gender intention from strong to weak is: having both a boy and a girl, only a boy, and only a girl. Third, in terms of the combination of quantity and gender, the intention from strong to weak is 1 boy and 1 girl, 1 boy, and 2 girls, …and 0 girl and 3 boys. Fourth, in terms of the length of the birth interval, the intention from strong to weak is 3 to 4 years, 5 to 6 years, 1 to 2 years, and over 6 years.
