Process of Institutionalization of History of Education in the United States:Roles of Paul Monroe and Columbia Teachers College

Abstract:In the United States,the institutionalized discipline of educational research can be traced back to the late 19th century.In the early development process,the history of education and educational theory,educational psychology together constitute the backbone of the discipline,so the history of education was one of the earliest sub-disciplines which completed the institutionalization process.This paper focus on Paul Monroe and Columbia University Teachers College and historically examines the early institutionalization process of history of education,especially examined Monroe's doctoral supervision in educational history.It also analyzes the diffusion of the history of education in other U.S.colleges and universities and Columbia Teachers College's impact in this process.
