Abstract:Polygonatum plants are perennial plants of Liliaceae. There are about 60 species reported at home and abroad,32 species in China,mainly distributed in the north temperate zone. Their main chemical components are steroidal saponins,polysaccharides,flavonoids,alkaloids,etc. They have anti-aging,anti-tumor,immunomodulation,antibacterial,antiviral,hypoglycemic and blood lipid effects. With the development of health industry,Polygonati Rhizome used as medicine and food has attracted great attention in recent years,and has become a research hotspot. However,the material basis of its efficacy is unclear and the product quality is uneven,which seriously limited the rapid upgrading of the industry. This review summarizes Polygonatum plants system classification,the chemical composition and pharmacological activity to provide theoretical basis for the development and utilization of Polygonatum plants.

Abstract:The genus Polygonum encompasses approximately 300 species widely distributed around the world, among which 120 Polygonum species grow in China. Among the rich species, 81 of them are widely used in traditional Chinese and folk medicines. In recent years, several studies have found that the genus Polygonum posseses a variety of biological activities including antioxidation, antimicrobial, antitumor, anti-obesity, etc. However, there are still not enough systemic data on the chemical constituents and their pharmacological effects; hence, it would be useful to review current literature for available pharmacological activites of the genus and as well as its active ingredients. Both in-vitro and in-vivo studies have provided strong evidence for the therapeutic potential of the genus Polygonum. This review collates and examines information on the pharmacological effects of the genus Polygonum as well as its chemical constituents.

Abstract:Polygonatum is a herbaceous plant of Polygonatum in Liliaceae., which has the functions of tonifying Qi, nourishing Yin, strengthening spleen, moistening lung and benefiting kidney. Polygonatum polysaccharide is one of the main components of Polygonatum and Polygonatum is rich in polysaccharides. Polygonatum polysaccharide is a kind of natural product resource used as medicine and food, in which complex structure and rich biological activity have become one of the hot spots in the development and research of food, medicine and other fields. In this paper, the extraction, purification, structure analysis and bioactivities of Polygonatum polysaccharides were reviewed. The research direction and application prospect of Polygonatum polysaccharides are prospected in order to provide theoretical reference for further development and utilization of Polygonatum polysaccharides.

Abstract:Polygonum capitatum is a traditional Chinese medicine widely used for urinary system diseases in the minority areas. Its research began in the 1980s. The major chemical constiturents in Polygonum capitatum is flavonids, phenolic acids, organic acids, al-dehydes, ketones, lignans and triterpen. The pharmacological activities were antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antipy-retic analgesia. By referring to the relative literatures on Polygonum capitatum from home and abroad, the study advances in the chemi-cal constituents and pharmacological actions of Polygonum capitatum were reviewed to lay foundation for the reasonable exploitation and utilization of Polygonum capitatum.

Abstract:The genus Polygonum(Polygonaceae) contains many medicinal plants,with a variety of pharmacological activities.Among the rich species,parts of the plants were widely used as traditional Chinese medicines and folk medicines.A variety of chemical components,including flavonoids,anthraquinones,stilbenes,glycolipids and terpenes,were contained in the Genus Polygonum.With the continuous development of HPLC and other modern separation techniques,combined with bioactivity-guided fractionations,a faster research progress of the genus Polygonum has achieved.In the paper,the advances in the chemical constituents and pharmacological activity of the genus Polygonum in the past five years were reviewed.

Abstract:Polygonatum is a famous traditional Chinese medicine that is widely used in China, Korea and Japan. In the last decade, constituents of the genus have been reported including steroidal saponins, flavones, alkaloids, lignins, amino acids and carbohydrates, some of which show biological properties such as antiviral and antitumor activity, variable effects on the immune system and anticoagulant activity. In addition, some findings provide novel evidence that Polygonatum species may contain potential anti-tumor and anti-viral proteins for possible medical application and large-scale pharmaceutical production. In this review, we focus on the updated research of the chemical constituents of Polygonatum including polysaccharides, steroidal saponins, flavonoids and lectins, and their potential therapeutic roles.

Abstract:Bistort Rhizoma (BR) is consumed as a traditional medicinal herb in China, but there reports on its bioactive components are scarce. In the present study, a fingerprinting analysis was built in 35 batches of BR from various sources, and five major compounds, the content of total phenols (TP) as well as total extractable tannins (TET) were measured. The antioxidant properties were examined by three methods, and then the correlation coefficients between antioxidant activity and content of BR properties were evaluated. The results showed that the content of TP was significantly correlated with the herbal antioxidant activity (R-2 = 0.5501 in the DPPH assay; R-2 = 0.6387 in the ABTS assay and R-2 = 0.6722 in the FRAP assay) but the five major components are not, TET also partly influenced the herbal efficiency. In conclusion, the properties responsible for the antioxidant activity of BR are phenols, and the active constituents may be some trace phenols in BR, which need further study to unravel the truly active compounds.

Abstract:Stilbene glycosides,the special constituents in Polygonum multiflorum Thunb,were reported to be the active ingredients with various pharmacological effects.It is reviewed the research progress of the pharmacological effects of Stilbene glycoside(2,3,5,4'-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-β-D-glucoside) on antioxidant system,cardiovascular system,central nervous system and anti-tumor effects.The possible mechanism involved and its possible application are also discussed.Meanwhile,the advances in pharmacokinetics of stilbene glycoside such as absorption and metabolism are also summarized.Thus we can provide some new ideas and strategies for further in-depth research on stilbene glycosides.

Abstract:Polygonati Rhizoma is a kind of restoratives of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM),with diverse chemical components and wide pharmacological effects.It has effects in promoting immunity,improving function balance,delaying senility,and treating challenging diseases,like diabetes,atherosis and cancer.The herb Polygonatum kingianum is one of the three source species of Polygonati Rhizoma,and distributed in southwest Yunnan province.Compared with the other two species P.sibiricum and P.cyrtonema,P.kingianum is known for good quality in a large size,yellow colour,high moisture and apparent section.To rationally exploit abundant resources of P.kingianum,we consulted references concerning Polygonati Rhizoma published since 1960s,and then summarized and elaborated the study advance in historic record,crude drug identification,chemical composition,pharmacological activity,artificial cultivation and product development,so as to provide helpful reference for both basic research and comprehensive utilization of P.kingianum.

Abstract:Chemical of different parts of Ploygonatum cirrhifolium in the Qinling Mountains and antibacterial activity of its extracts have been studied.The results are as follows: ①The roots,stems and leaves contained triterpenoid saponin,steroidal spaonins,flavonoids,anthraquinones and their glycosides,coumarins,carbohydrates,organic acids and mucus substance.In addition,proteins,amino acids and plural phenol were found in roots;lactones in stems and leaves.②N.butanol extracts of the roots had the strongest inhibition to bacterium growth,follow is acetic ether extracts,the other extracts no obivious function.③The inhibition of extracts to fungi and bacterium growth was much stronger than to mould.

Abstract:Despite continued advances in prevention and treatment strategies, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of death worldwide, and more effective therapeutic methods are urgently needed. Polygonatum is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine with a variety of pharmacological applications and biological activities, such as antioxidant activity, anti-inflammation, antibacterial effect, immune-enhancing effect, glucose regulation, lipid-lowering and anti-atherosclerotic effects, treatment of diabetes and anticancer effect. There has also been more and more evidence to support the cardioprotective effect of Polygonatum in recent years. However, up to now, there has been a lack of comprehensive studies on the active ingredients and their pharmacotoxicological effects related to cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, the main active components of Polygonatum (including Polysaccharides, Flavonoids, Saponins) and their biological activities were firstly reviewed in this paper. Furthermore, we summarized the pharmacological effects of Polygonatum 's active components in preventing and treating CVDs, and its relevant toxicological investigations. Finally, we emphasize the potential of Polygonatum in the prevention and treatment of CVDs.

Abstract:In recent years, the utilization of Chinese native medicine and other plant extracts in the treatment of diseases has attracted extensive attention, especially in the area of malignant tumors. However, lots of herbal remedies active ingredients have not been found or have been discovered but not effectively developed and applied. Therefore, screening new Chinese medicine active components and determining their antitumor effects have become a new breakthrough in the prevention and treatment of tumor disease. In the past years, a large number of studies have demonstrated that Polygonum cuspidatum and its active components like resveratrol showed excellent antitumor activities, including our own antitumor studies about resveratrol in colorectal cancer. The purpose of this review is to summarize the research progress of Chinese herb Polygonum cuspidatum and its active components in tumor diseases and provide theoretical basis for further scientific experiments and clinical applications.

Abstract:As a traditional tonic Chinese medicine, Polygonum multiflorum is widely used in clinical practice. However, with the deepening of modern pharmacological research, its drug toxicity, especially hepatotoxicity, has become increasingly prominent. Based on a large number of clinical and experimental evidence, it has been confirmed that Polygonum multiflorum and its main active ingredients such as anthraquinones and diphenylethylene glucoside can cause different degrees of hepatotoxicity. Further studies have shown that the toxicological mechanisms involved in the hepatotoxicity of different extracts and components of Polygonum multiflorum may include oxidative phosphorylation, bile acid excretion, different metabolic pathways, genetic and metabolic factors, immune homeostasis, etc. By sorting out and summarizing the literature related to hepatotoxicity of Polygonum multiflorum in recent years, this paper discussed the hepatotoxicity mechanism of Polygonum multiflorum and its main components and some contradictions in related reports.
