Abstract:Green evolution of enterprises is a significant way to realize society's sustainable development. Although this concept is generally accepted, the attitude of stakeholders is not positive. For example, some countries have different views on the question of whether to adopt relevant policies in order to promote the green evolution of enterprises. In this study, this issue is described as an exploration of the differences between free-market competition and policy intervention. In addition, a life cycle model of competition between green and non-green products is constructed by drawing upon game theory and Hotelling's model. This study provides reasonable suggestions for relevant policy formulation. The results show that, first, policy interventions help accelerate the green evolution of firms, but consumers bear the necessary costs. Second, green firms have advantages in terms of price, sales volume, and revenue under policy intervention, when compared with non-green firms, which have disadvantages that are more significant under policy intervention. In addition, free-market competition can create more cumulative profits at the expense of the time for firms to evolve green. Finally, a decision-targeting mechanism is designed on the basis of governmental balance of payments that considers the policy-planning period and provides specific decision-making references for policymakers.
