Abstract:1. ABSTRACT Results from student surveys play a critical role in many of the quality assurance and improvement activities embedded in contemporary higher education. It is important to ensure, accordingly, that the information obtained from student surveys is as valid and reliable as possible. An important part of maximising the quality of survey data is ensuring that survey response rates are as high as possible, and that individuals provide considered responses to survey questions. To this end, the paper advances a new approach for enhancing the extent and quality of individuals' involvement in university surveys. Drawing from reviews of national and international research and practice, the paper presents a 'survey engagement model' that deconstructs different processes in the generic survey cycle. After exploring the nature and significance of these phases, it presents findings from a recent study of graduates' engagement in the national surveys which underpin much discussion of quality in Australian higher education. The use of the model is exemplified through discussion of diagnostic strategies and interventions that institutions can use to enhance individuals' engagement with university surveys.
