Abstract:Through applying the Taylor-expansion technique to the particle general dynamic equation, the newly proposed Taylor-expansion moment method (TEMOM) is extended to solve agglomerate coagulation due to Brownian motion in the entire size regime. The TEMOM model disposed by Dahneke's solution (TEMOM–Dahneke) is proved to be more accurate than by harmonic mean solution (TEMOM–harmonic) through comparing their results with the reference sectional model (SM) for different fractal dimensions. In the transition regime, the TEMOM–Dahneke gives the more accurate results than the quadrature method of moments with three nodes (QMOM3). The mass fractal dimension is found to play an important role in determining the decay of agglomerate number and the spectrum of agglomerate size distribution, but the effect decreases with decreasing agglomerate Knudsen number. The self-preserving size distribution (SPSD) theory and linear decay law for agglomerate number are only applicable to be in the free molecular regime and continuum plus near-continuum regime, but not perfectly in the transition regime.

Abstract:Fine particles aggregating into larger units or flocculation body is a random combination process. Increasing the size and density of flocculation body is the main approach to rapid particle removal or sedimentation in water. Aiming at the Brownian coagulation of fine particles, a new method of Taylor expansion moment construction of fractal flocs has been developed in this paper, incorporating the Taylor expansion approach based on the moment method and the fractal dimension of the floc structure originated from fractal theories. This method successfully overcomes the limit of previous moment methods that require pre-assumed particle size distribution. Results of the zero and second order moments of Brownian flocs from the proposed method are compared with those from the Laguerre method, integral moment method and finite element method. It is found that the higher accuracy and efficiency of computation have been achieved by the new method, compared to the previous ones. Effects of the fractal dimension on the zero and second order moments, geometric average volume and standard deviation are also analyzed using this method. The self-conservation characteristics of particle distribution is observed without presumption of initial distributions.

Abstract:The evolution equations of moments for the Brownian coagulation of nanoparticles in both continuum and free molecule regimes are analytically studied.These equations are derived using a Taylor-expansion technique.The self-preserving size distribution is investigated using a newly defined dimensionless parameter,and the asymptotic values for this parameter are theoretically determined.The dimensionless time required for an initial size distribution to achieve self-preservation is also derived in both regimes.Once the size distribution becomes self-preserving,the time evolution of the zeroth and second moments can be theoretically obtained,and it is found that the second moment varies linearly with time in the continuum regime.Equivalent equations,rather than the original ones from which they are derived,can be employed to improve the accuracy of the results and reduce the computational cost for Brownian coagulation in the continuum regime as well as the free molecule regime.

Abstract:The closure of moment equations for nanoparticle coagulation due to Brownian motion in the entire size regime is performed using a newly proposed method of moments. The equations in the free molecular size regime and the continuum plus near-continuum regime are derived separately in which the fractal moments are approximated by three-order Taylor-expansion series. The moment equations for coagulation in the entire size regime are achieved by the harmonic mean solution and the Dahneke’s solution. The results produced by the quadrature method of moments (QMOM), the Pratsinis’s log-normal moment method (PMM), the sectional method (SM), and the newly derived Taylor-expansion moment method (TEMOM) are presented and compared in accuracy and efficiency. The TEMOM method with Dahneke’s solution produces the most accurate results with a high efficiency than other existing moment models in the entire size regime, and thus it is recommended to be used in the following studies on nanoparticle dynamics due to Brownian motion.

Abstract:We propose a new method of moments for solving a coagulation equation based on the Taylor-expansion method of moments (TEMOM). In this model, the closure of the moment equations is achieved by using the Taylor expansion technique, and the fractional-order moments can be used to improve the accuracy of the results. The newly proposed method has no prior requirement for the shape of the particle size distribution. By comparing it with other known methods both in free molecular and continuum regimes, the new approach is found to be the most accurate method. The results show that the predictions of the lower-order moments are not significantly influenced by the higher-order ones, and the higher-order moments are not necessary if one intends to increase the accuracy of the numerical predictions.

Abstract:A new numerical approach for solving coagulation equation, TEMOM model, is first presented. In this model, the closure of the moment equations is approached using the Taylor-series expansion technique. Through constructing a system of three first-order ordinary differential equations, the most important indexes for describing aerosol dynamics, including particle number density, particle mass and geometric standard deviation, are easily obtained. This approach has no prior requirement for particle size spectrum, and the limitation existing in the log-normal distribution theory automatically disappears. This new approach is tested by comparing it with known accurate solutions both in the free molecular and the continuum regime. The results show that this new approach can be used to solve the particle general dynamic equation undergoing Brownian coagulation with sufficient accuracy, while less computational cost is needed.

Abstract:The Taylor-series expansion method of moments (TEMOM) is modified to match the behavior of real self-preserved aerosols by taking advantage of the numerical results obtained by the sectional method for Brownian coagulation in both continuum and free molecular regimes. The newly proposed model is able to predict the evolution of the zeroth and second moments more accurately than the original TEMOM when the aerosol size distribution approaches self-preserving or the coagulation time is sufficiently long. A special kind of coordinate diagram, which describes the relationship between the moment equations and one non-dimensional moment is first used to investigate different methods of moments that only involve the first three moments. The errors produced by different methods of moments can be qualitatively explained by these diagrams. By polynomial fitting, a new set of moment equations for Brownian coagulation in the free molecular regime is proposed in the framework of the log-normal preserving theory.

Abstract:The direct expansion method of moments for nanoparticle Brownian coagulation is investigated in the entire size regime. The exact Dahneke's formula is used as the coagulation kernel. After comparing the results predicted by the direct expansion method of moments with those provided by the quadrature method of moments, the direct expansion method is proved to be qualified for predicting the time evolution of the lower order moments such as the zeroth and second moments. For relatively small initial geometric standard deviation, the results predicted by the direction expansion method of moments are more accurate than those provided by the quadrature method of moments. The partial derivatives of the coagulation kernel that appear in the direction expansion method of moments are calculated numerically due to the complicated form of the selected kernel, and the computational time can be reduced by means of parallel computing.

Abstract:Nano-suspensions (NS) exhibit unusual thermophysical behaviors once interparticle aggregations and the shear flows are imposed, which occur ubiquitously in applications but remain poorly understood, because existing theories have not paid these attentions but focused mainly on stationary NS. Here we report the critical role of time-dependent fractal aggregation in the unsteady thermal convection of NS systematically. Interestingly, a time ratio λ = t p / t m ( t p is the aggregate characteristic time, t m the mean convection time) is introduced to characterize the slow and fast aggregations, which affect distinctly the thermal convection process over time. The increase of fractal dimension reduces both momentum and thermal boundary layers, meanwhile extends the time duration for the full development of thermal convection. We find a nonlinear growth relation of the momentum layer, but a linear one of the thermal layer, with the increase of primary volume fraction of nanoparticles for different fractal dimensions. We present two global fractal scaling formulas to describe these two distinct relations properly, respectively. Our theories and methods in this study provide new evidence for understanding shear-flow and anomalous heat transfer of NS associated non-equilibrium aggregation processes by fractal laws, moreover, applications in modern micro-flow technology in nanodevices.
Evolution of Number Concentration of Nano- Particles Undergoing Brownian Coagulation in the Transition Regime

Abstract:Evolution of number concentration of nanoparticles undergoing Brownian coagulation in the transition regime is studied theoretically and numerically. The results show that the curves of particle size distribution move toward the area with large particle diameters, the curve peak becomes lower and the range that particle diameters cover becomes wider as time elapses. In the process of coagulation the particles with small diameter disappear gradually and the particle size distribution remains a log-normal distribution. The change rate of the particle size distribution is more appreciable at the initial stage than that at the final stage. The initial Knudsen number has a significant effect on the coagulation rate which increases with decreasing the initial Knudsen number. The larger the initial geometric standard deviation is, the smaller the curve peak is, and the wider the area that curves cover is. The initial geometric standard deviation has a significant effect on the particle size distribution which can remain a self-preserving state when the initial geometric standard deviation is smaller than 2. With the increase of the diversity of initial particle size, the particle size distribution does not obey the log-normal distribution any more as time elapses.

Abstract:This paper presents a hybrid method of moments with interpolation closure Taylor-series expansion method of moments (MoMIC-TEMoM) scheme for solving the Smoluchowski coagulation equation. In the proposed scheme, the exponential function, which arises in the conversion from a particle size distribution space to a space of moments, is expressed in an additive form using the third-order Taylor-series expansion; the implicit moments are approximated using two Lagrange interpolation functions, namely the newly defined normalized moment function and the normalized moment function defined by Frenklach and Harris (1987). The new hybrid scheme allows implementation of the method of moments with an arbitrary type of moment sequence, and it overcomes the shortcomings of the Taylor-series expansion moment method proposed by Frenklach and Harris. The proposed scheme is verified with three aerosol dynamics, namely Brownian coagulation in the free molecular regime, Brownian coagulation in the continuum-slip regime, and turbulence coagulation. The results reveal that the hybrid MoMIC-TEMoM scheme has similar accuracy to currently recognized methods including the quadrature method of moments, MoMIC, and TEMoM, and its accuracy can be further enhanced as the fractional moment sequence type is used for Brownian coagulation in the free molecular regime. Abstract:The disturbing of ultrafine particles on carrying phase is usually ignored in studies on dilute ultrafine particle systems. In a dense fractal-like agglomerate system, however, the effect of particle phase on carrier phase should be considered due to its unique heat and mass transfer while the corresponding mathematical model for this problem has not been established. By taking the agglomerate-laden suspension as a single pseudo fluid, we propose a two-way coupling model in which the developed governing equations for suspension and particle general dynamic equation (PGDE) for particle coagulation and breakage due to turbulence are simultaneously solved. The Taylor-expansion moment method has been applied to solve fractal-like aggregate process and dilute gas-to-particle conversion, and in this study it is further extended to close the PGDE equation by invoking fractal theory. The newly coupling model is not limited in dilute particle system, and thus it is expected to play important roles in studying dense fractal-like agglomerate synthesis or other particulate industrial applications.
Solution of General Dynamic Equation for Nanoparticles in Turbulent Flow Considering Fluctuating Coagulation

Abstract:A new averaged general dynamic equation (GDE) for nanoparticles in the turbulent flow is derived by considering the combined effect of convection, Brownian diffusion, turbulent diffusion, turbulent coagulation, and fluctuating coagulation. The equation is solved with the Taylor-series expansion moment method in a turbulent pipe flow. The experiments are performed. The numerical results of particle size distribution correlate well with the experimental data. The results show that, for a turbulent nanoparticulate flow, a fluctuating coagulation term should be included in the averaged particle GDE. The larger the Schmidt number is and the lower the Reynolds number is, the smaller the value of ratio of particle diameter at the outlet to that at the inlet is. At the outlet, the particle number concentration increases from the near-wall region to the near-center region. The larger the Schmidt number is and the higher the Reynolds number is, the larger the difference in particle number concentration between the near-wall region and near-center region is. Particle polydispersity increases from the near-center region to the near-wall region. The particles with a smaller Schmidt number and the flow with a higher Reynolds number show a higher polydispersity. The degree of particle polydispersity is higher considering fluctuating coagulation than that without considering fluctuating coagulation.

Abstract:When the liquid is injected into a gas-solid fluidized bed, particles are easily wetted and prone to form liquid bridges among them, further leading to particle agglomeration. Wet particle agglomeration induced by liquid bridge is dynamic and unstable, and its evolution behavior affects the stable operation of fluidized bed reactor. Therefore, based on the formation-fragmentation competition mechanism, a wet agglomeration evolution model is proposed to predict the evolution characteristics of wet agglomerates under different conditions. Furthermore, a modified drag force model which attributed the effect of wet agglomerates into the drag force was established and applied to the CFD simulation of a fluidized bed with wet agglomerates under the liquid spray-evaporation equilibrium state. Meanwhile, the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technology is applied in this work, and it was found that the vertical solid velocity simulated by CFD is in good agreement with the PIV measurement results.
Simulation of the Brownian Coagulation of Nanoparticles with Initial Bimodal Size Distribution Via Moment Method

Abstract:The Brownian coagulation of nanoparticles with initial bimodal size distribution, i.e., mode i and j, is numerically studied using the moment method. Evolutions of particle number concentration, geometric average diameter and geometric standard deviation are given in the free molecular regime, the continuum regime, the free molecular regime and transition regime, the free molecular regime and continuum regime, respectively. The results show that, both in the free molecular regime and the continuum regime, the number concentration of mode i and j decreases with increasing time. The evolutions of particle geometric average diameter with different initial size distribution are quite different. Both intra-modal and inter-modal coagulation finally make the polydispersed size distribution become monodispersed. As time goes by, the size distribution with initial bimodal turns to be unimodal and shifts to a larger particle size range. In the free molecular regime and transition regime, the inter-modal coagulation becomes dominant when the number concentrations of mode i and j are of the same order. The effects of the number concentration of mode i and mode j on the evolution of geometric average diameter of mode j are negligible, while the effects of the number concentration of mode j on the evolution of geometric average diameter of mode j is distinct. In the free molecular regime and continuum regime, the higher the initial number concentration of mode j, the more obvious the variation of the number concentration of mode i.

Abstract:In this paper, the dynamic evolution of nanoparticles in a turbulent Taylor–Couette flow was studied by means of a numerical simulation. The initial particle size was 200 nm, and the volume concentration was 1 × 10−5. The Reynolds-averaged N–S equation for Taylor–Couette flow was solved numerically using the realizable k-ε model combined with the standard wall function. The numerical result of the velocity distribution is in good agreement with the experimental results. Additionally, the dynamic equation for the particle number distribution function was solved numerically using the Taylor series expansion moment method (TEMOM). The variation characteristics of particle number density, diameter and polydispersity in the flow were analyzed. The results show that particle breakage is obvious in the region with strong vorticity due to the large shear strength, which leads to a significant change in the particle number density, diameter and polydispersity. Furthermore, the effects of the gap width between two cylinders and the Reynolds number on the distribution of the particle number density, size and polydispersity are discussed.

Abstract:A new analytical solution is first proposed to solve the population balance equation due to Brownian coagulation in the continuum-slip regime. An assumption for a novel variable g (g=m0m2/m12, where m0, m1 and m2 are the first three moments, respectively) is successfully applied in executing a separate variable method for ordinary differential equations of the Taylor expansion method of moments. The sectional method is selected as a reference to verify the new solution. The accuracy between the new solution and Lee et al. analytical solution (Lee et al., 1997, Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 188, 486–492) is mainly compared. The geometric standard deviation of number distribution for the new analytical solution is revealed to be limited to 1.6583. Within the valid range of the geometric standard deviation, the new analytical solution is confirmed to solve the population balance equation undergoing Brownian coagulation with the very nearly same accuracy as Lee et al. analytical solution. For the total particle number concentration, the new solution usually yields higher accuracy. The new solution and Lee et al. analytical solution approximately become one solution as the Knudsen number is smaller than 0.1000. The new solution has the potential to become a competitive analytical solution for solving population balance equation regarding its accuracy and very straightforward derivation.
Properties of the Collision Efficiency of Nanoparticles in Brownian Coagulation

Abstract:The collision efficiency of nanoparticles with diameters from 100nm to 750nm in the Brownian coagulation is studied by building and solving numerically the equations of particle collision in the presence of the van der Waals force, the elastic deformation force, the Stokes resistance, the lubrication force and the electrostatic force. The results show that the collision efficiency decreases overall with the increasing particle diameter. It is found that there exists an abrupt increase in the collision efficiency when the particle diameter is equals to 550 nm. Finally a new expression for the collision efficiency is presented.
