Abstract:Removing dyes, antibiotics, and pathogens from contaminated water remains a major challenge. In this study, chitosan (CS) as carrier and reducing agent and Ag/AgCl/CS composite was fabricated. The composite was characterized by IR, XRD, SEM, EDS, UV-vis DRS, PL, TPR, and EIS. The photocatalytic activity of Ag/AgCl/CS was estimated by the photodegradation of pollutants rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline (TC). Moreover, the photocatalytic antibacterial properties were investigated. Results showed that Ag/AgCl was loaded onto CS without obvious aggregation, and Ag/AgCl/CS composites exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity and photostability for the degradation of RhB and TC under visible-light irradiation. When the mass ratio of Ag to AgCl is 8.33:1, the Ag/AgCl/CS (S4) had the highest degradation rate for RhB (0.1582 min –1 ), which was 4.77 times of AgCl. The holes (h + ) and superoxide anion radicals (·O 2 - ) played crucial roles in the dye degradation. Moreover, Ag/AgCl/CS possesses excellent antimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ), Staphylococcus aureus ( St. aureus ), and Valsa maliMiyabe & G.Yam Ada ( Valsa mali. ). Enhanced antibacterial activity against E. coli and St. aureus with light irradiation was measured by the disk diffusion method compared with that under dark conditions. The results show that the Ag/AgCl/CS composite can be used as a material with antibacterial activity and can be used for dye/antibiotic degradation in water/wastewater treatment plants.
