Abstract:A novel fluorescent sensor (AQTF1) based on the N-(quinolin-8-yl) tetrahydrofuran-2-carboxamide was designed and synthesized. This new sensor demonstrated high selectivity for the Zn2+ without the interference from Cd2+. The detection limit of this probe was calculated to be 10.8nM for Zn2+. The in situ prepared AQTF1-Zn2+ complex was used for detection of H2PO4− and displayed good selectivity from the common anions. Furthermore, the AQTF1 displayed good ratiometric response for the relay recognition for Zn2+ and H2PO4−.

Abstract:A simple ratiometric sensor (L-1) for the cascade detection of Zn2+ and H2PO4- with high selectivity was reported based on the intermolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanism. This new sensor could distinguish Zn2+ from Cd2+, and features high fluorescence quantum yield with L-1 (0.45) and L-1-Zn2+ (0.27). There is a good linear relationship between the fluorescence ratio I-525 nm/I-430 nm upon addition of Zn2+ and the limit of detection (LOD) was evaluated to be 41.0 nM. Furthermore, the in situ prepared L-1-Zn2+ complex also displayed good selectivity and ratiometric response for H2PO4- and the detection limit of L-1-Zn2+ was found to be 49.0 nM. L-1 exhibits permeability and can been applied to the detection of intracellular Zn2+ and H2PO4- in HepG-2 cells.

Abstract:A new ratiometric fluorescent chemosensor based on a polyimine macrocycle ligand 1 has been synthesized. The chemosensor can exhibit a pronounced fluorescence response and high selectivity to Zn2+ ion over other 15 metal ions, including Cd2+. Sensor 1 appears an emission peak at 370 nm. Upon the addition of Zn2+ ion, the typical emission peak for 1 at 370 nm is obviously quenched, but a new emission peak at around 470 nm appears and shows a large enhancement due to the formation of a 1:1 Zn2+-1 complex. In addition, there is a good linear relationship between the fluorescence ratio I-470nm/I-370nm and the concentration of Zn2+, which makes a ratiometric assay of Zn2+ ion possible. Abstract:A novel ratiometric fluorescent sensor for Zn2+, 2-(2-(2-hydroxy benzoyl)hydrazinyl)-N-(quinolin-8-yl)acetamide (F-1) with quinoline as a fluorophore and salicylhydrazide as a receptor, was designed and synthesized. F-1 shows high selectivity and sensitivity for Zn2+ over Cd2+ in a methanol-tris-HCl (0.05 M) buffer solution (1 : 9, v/v, pH = 7.0). Upon the addition of Zn2+, an overall 5-fold increase in the fluorescence emission ratio (I-500/I-420) was observed. An intermolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanism is suggested for this ratiometric sensor.

Abstract:Zinc ion, one of the most important transition metal ions in living organisms, plays a crucial role in the homeostasis of the organism. The disorder of zinc is associated with many major diseases. It is highly desirable to develop selective and sensitive methods for the real-time detection of zinc ions. In this work, double-emitting fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) are prepared by a solvothermal method using glutathione, L-aspartic acid, and formamide as the raw materials. The carbon dots specifically recognize zine ions and produce a decrease in fluorescence intensity at 684 nm and an increase at 649 nm, leading to a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for zinc detection. Through surface modification and spectral analysis, the surface groups including carboxyl, carbonyl, hydroxyl, and amino groups, and C=N in heterocycles of CDs are revealed to synergistically coordinate Zn2+, inducing the structural changes in the emission site. The CDs can afford a low limit of detection of ~5 nM for Zn2+ detection with good linearity in the range of 0.02–5 μM, showing good selectivity as well. The results from real samples including fetal bovine serum, milk powder, and zinc gluconate oral solution indicated the good applicability of the CDs in the determination of Zn2+.

Abstract:Two novel fluorescent Zn2+ chemosensors were synthesized in four steps from inexpensive starting materials. They exhibited very strong fluorescence responses to Zn2+ and had remarkably high selectivity to Zn2+ than other metal ions including Mg2+, Ca2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+. These two new molecules could be used as low-priced yet high-quality Zn2+ chemosensors.

Abstract:A fluorescein based fluorescent sensor FN1 for Zn(superscript 2+) was synthesized with excellent sensitivity and selectivity for Zn(superscript 2+) over other metal ions in methnol. Upon the addition of Zn(superscript 2+), the initial absorption band at 371 nm decreases and a new band at 437 nm appears in UV-Vis spectrum. The integrated fluorescence enhancement is increased by almost 37 folds after the addition of equal moles of Zn(superscript 2+) relative to other bi-valenced metal ions or 0.5 folds moles of Zn(superscript 2+) relative to single-valenced ions in mixed ions solution of methanol (φ=0.48, λ(subscript max(subscript em)=513 nm), And the detection limit of Zn(superscript 2+) is estimated to be 7 μg•L^(-1). The bonding mechanism of a 1:1 FN1/Zn(superscript 2+) complex is discussed on the basis of UV-Vis, fluorescence, mass spectroscopic results and reference compound.

Abstract:A new double Schiff base, carbazole, and diaminomaleonitrile-based chemosensor for Fe3+ with high sensitivity and selectivity was designed and synthesized. Addition of only Fe3+ ions induced the fluorescence quenching of the chemosensor in DMF solution. The chemosensor formed a 1:1 complex with Fe3+ with the high binding constant of 7.98·10–6 M–1. The chemosensor displayed low detection limit (3.75·10–8 M) and fast response time (15 s) to Fe3+.

Abstract:A new ratiometric and selective fluorescent chemosensor (1) for quantification of zinc ions in aqueous ethanol has been synthesized and investigated in this work. In an environmentally friendly media of 30% (v/v) water/ethanol and 10mM Tris–HCl neutral buffer (pH 7.03), 1 displayed selective Zn2+ ratiometric fluorescence response, with a dynamic working range of 1.0–8.0μM and a detection limit of 0.5μM Zn2+. The determination of Zn2+ in synthesized water sample was also successful.

Abstract:Fluorescent turn-on receptors are extensively employed for the detection of Zn ions contamination in the environment due to its simplicity, convenience and portability. However, developing highly sensitive and cell-imageable fluorescent turn-on probe for the recognition of Zn ions in living organisms remains a significant challenge. Herein, we have successfully synthesized a novel Schiff base probe (H2L) with a significant fluorescence turn-on response (Zn ions) by one-step synthetic method. In this work, H2L exhibited high sensitivity to Zn2+ ions upon interaction with various common metal ions in HEPES buffer solution. Its detection limit is 1.87 × 10-7 M, which is lower than the requirement of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. The fluorescence titration and Job's plot analysis suggested a 1:1 binding ratio between the probe and Zn ion, and the single-crystal structures obtained further confirmed this inference. In addition, the fluorescent sensor demonstrated recyclability, maintaining its fluorescence intensity for up to 6 cycles without significant decrease, which holds promise for future investigations on reversible fluorescent chemosensors. Notably, fluorescence imaging experiments demonstrated that H2L could be successfully used for the detection of Zn2+ in live cells.

Abstract:The addition of Zn2+ significantly enhanced the fluorescence of chemosensor 1 compared with other metal ions. This was caused by the coordination of oxygen and nitrogen atoms with Zn2+ inhibiting the photoinduced electron transfer phenomenon from Schiff base nitrogen atoms to chromone groups. In this study, a novel fluorescent chemosensor 1 based on chromone‐3‐carboxaldehyde Schiff base was synthesized and featured through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectra. Spectroscopic investigation indicated that the fluorescent sensor showed high selectivity toward Zn2+ over other metal ions and that the detection limit of 1 could reach 10−7 M. These indicated that 1 acted as a highly selective and sensitive fluorescence chemosensor for Zn2+.

Abstract:3,8-Bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (L) has been found to show high sensitivity toward Zn2+ than other competitive metal ions, where Zn2+-selective chelation-enhanced fluorescence response at 461nm is attributed to the formation of a 1:1 metal–ligand complex. In addition, two single-crystal structures of ligand L have been included with the same metal and ligand ratio of 1:1, namely one mononuclear Zn(II) complex [Zn(L)Cl2] (1) and one 1D Cd(II) coordination polymer [Cd(L)(NO3)2]n (2).

Abstract:A novel turn-on fluorescence probe L has been designed that exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity with a detection limit of 9.53 × 10−8 mol/L for the quantification of Zn2+. 1H-NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the unsymmetrical nature of the structure of the Schiff base probe L. An emission titration experiment in the presence of different molar fractions of Zn2+ was used to perform a Job’s plot analysis. The results showed that the stoichiometric ratio of the complex formed by L and Zn2+ was 1:1. Moreover, the molecular structure of the mononuclear Cu complex reveals one ligand L coordinates with one Cu atom in the asymmetric unit. On adding CuCl2 to the ZnCl2/L system, a Cu-Zn complex was formed and a strong quenching behavior was observed, which inferred that the Cu2+ displaced Zn2+ to coordinate with the imine nitrogen atoms and hydroxyl oxygen atoms of probe L.

Abstract:4-N,N-diethylaminosalicylaldehyde hydrazone Schiff base (1) and its analogues (2-6) were synthesized and characterized by NMR, MS and elemental analysis. Compound 1 exhibited ratiometric fluorescent response to Zn(2+) over other metal ions in aqueous ethanol solution with neutral buffer. The complexation ratio, site and constant and the effect of pH value and water fraction on its fluorescent response to Zn(2+) were investigated.

Abstract:A series of dendritic 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) and 5-dialkyl(aryl) aminomethyl-8-HQ derivatives were synthesized and their fluoroionophoric properties toward representative alkali, alkaline earth, group IIIA and transition metal ions were investigated. Among the selected ions, Zn(II) enhanced the fluorescence of N-di-(methoxycarbonylethyl)aminoethyl-3-[4-(8-hydroxyquinolin-5-ylmethyl)piperazin-1-yl]propanoic amide] (7) by 31-fold, while Al(III) caused enhancement to some extent. The absence of any significant fluorescence enhancement by the other ions examined renders 7 a highly useful Zn(II)-selective fluorescent sensor.

Abstract:A novel ratiometric fluorescent peptidyl chemosensor (Dansyl-Cys-Pro-Gly-Cys-Trp-NH2, D-P5) for metal ions detection has been synthesized via Fmoc solid-phase peptide synthesis. The chemosensor exhibited a high selectivity for Cd2+ over other metal ions including competitive transition and Group I and II metal ions in neutral pH. The fluorescence emission intensity of D-P5 was significantly enhanced in the presence of Cd2+ by fluorescent resonance energy transfer (FRET) and chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) effects. The binding stoichiometry, detection limit, binding affinity, reversibility and pH sensitivity of the sensor for Cd2+ were investigated.
