Abstract:Objective To investigate the clinical and electroneurophysiological characteristics of peripheral neuropathy in patients with multiple sclerosis(MS).Methods An analysis of 41 cases of MS associated with peripheral abnormalities wan conducted.By using of nerve conduction velocity(NCV) technique, motor conduction velocity(MCV),sensory conduction velocity(SCV) and latency and amplitude of peripheral nerves were examined by using of F-wave.The percentage of responses and latencies of median and tibial nerves were examined by using of H-reflex and latencies of median and tibial nerves were examined. Results The incidence of peripheral neuropathy was 41.4% in this group. The clinical symptoms included extremity numbness in 12 cases(29.2%),and limb inertia in 10 cases(24.3%),radicular pain in 2 cases(4.8%);Signs included periphery or root form hypoesthesia in 9 cases(21.9%),decrease of tendon reflex in 5 cases(12.1%),muscle weakness in 5cases(12.1%),and myatrophy in 3 cases(7.3%).The electroneurophysiological abnormalities included prolonged F wave response and H reflex in nerves, low F wave rates;decreased CMAP and SAP of nerves;slow MCV and SCV of MS patients in different degree and prolonged distal latencies. Conclusion MS is a demyelinating disease attacking to CNS.In some MS patients, both CNS and PNS might be involved at the same time.Techniques of electroneurophysiology is useful to evaluate the site and degree of peripheral nerve damage.
