Abstract:This paper deals with the inventory control problem for the hybrid production system. The manufacturing and remanufacturing operations simultaneously satisfy the customer demand. The product returns can enter the global serviceable inventory after being remanufactured. The global serviceable inventory takes the (s, S) continuous review replenishment policy. When the global serviceable inventory level drops to s, the manufacturing activity begins to produce in a batch and to replenish the global serviceable inventory up to S after a stochastic lead time. The changes of inventory state under the stochastic demand and product returns are illustrated with the Markov quasi-birth-death (QBD) processes. The hybrid inventory system is formulated as a Markov decision model. The matrix-geometric approach is used to derive the steady stationary transition probabilities. The optimal inventory parameters can be obtained by minimizing the long-run average cost. One numerical example is taken to illustrate the proposed methodology.

Abstract:In order to overcome the limits of inventory of remanufacturing system,this paper proposes a hybrid inventory model of manufacturing / remanufacturing system.By analyzing the factors which constitute the cost of hybrid inventory,it establishes the change relationship between the average total cost of inventory in unit cycle,EOQ and remanufacturing cycle.Besides,though numerical analysis,it obtains that,on the condition of ensuring that out of stock dose not occur,the effective way of reducing the average total cost of inventory in unit cycle is to shorten the remanufacturing cycle.

Abstract:In a hybrid system with product recovery,the producers have to coordinate the manufacturing and remanufacturing simultaneously.With the integrating remanufacturing activity into regular production environment,traditional production planning and inventory management methods are no longer suitable.How to design an effective control mechanism is a key problem for the producers in the product recovery context.This paper puts forward an improved control mechanism for hybrid system by redesigning the inventory information.Moreover,considering the system complexity,we apply automatic control theory to develop transfer function models of hybrid system.The dynamic simulation shows that our control mechanism can not only effectively coordinate manufacturing and remanufacturing activities,but also substantially improve the system's performance.

Nowadays the management and control problems of Make-to-Order (MTO) production enterprises are paid more and more attention. In the paper, the problem of capability estimation for the MTO enterprises is studied based on simulation. It deals with the production orders of different delivery dates based on limited manufacturing resources. The adopted approach is to arrange order production conversely according to delivery dates demanded by customers under infinite capability condition. Then, the equipment capabilities are balanced under limited capability condition. In order to make workshop capability estimation more intuitive and visual, the approach is integrated with simulation theory and tool. The simulation tool adopted herein is Witness that provides the opportunity for a user to estimate the machining capability and resource allocation scheme of a workshop under different conditions. The analysis results lay the foundation for accurate decision-making of orders and scheduling plans. A workshop is taken as the instance to estimate its machining capability that consists of five groups of machines that are used to produce three parts.

Abstract:Due to global warming, environmental consciousness and shortening product life-cycles, more attentions have been paid to ecological protection and resource utilization. Green products and production process designs significantly influence the environment and resource re-usage. The relevant EU regulations, such as WEEE and EuP, have reduced negative effects by controlling the disposals and the resource re-usage. In this study, green product designs and remanufacturing efforts are investigated when we develop an integrated production inventory model with short life-cycles. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the theory. We have shown that new technology evolution, remanufacturing ratios and system’s holding costs are critical factors affecting decision making in a green supply chain inventory control system.

Economic Manufacturing Quantity (EMQ) models assume that maintenance time consumed by inspection and restoration in the production cycle is negligible. This paper addresses the joint problem of production planning and inspection schedules with considering maintenance time under the realistic assumptions that the elapsed time until the production process shift is exponentially distributed and the optimal production run and maintenance schedule are equal-interval. A simple model has been developed for the simultaneous determination of the length of the production run and the number of inspections for a deteriorating production system with considering maintenance time. Then the problem is solved by using an approximation to the cost function. The resulting EMQ model is found to be an adjustment to that ignoring maintenance time. Finally, the relationships of optimal production run time or the optimal number of inspections and cost penalty by using the two models are examined.

Abstract:Remanufacturing has created considerable benefits to both industry and community. This paper generates insights into the acquisition management and production planning of a hybrid manufacturing/remanufacturing system. The acquisition quantity of the used products is stochastic and sensitive to the acquisition price, and the uncertain quality of the acquired used products leads to a random yield in the remanufacturing process. With such a market-driven acquisition channel and a random remanufacturing yield, it is shown how the acquisition pricing, remanufacturing, and manufacturing decisions can be coordinated in order to maximize the total expected profit. Sequential and parallel remanufacturing/manufacturing processes are considered in different cases. In each case, we use a stochastic dynamic programming to formulate and analyze the model, showing that the optimal policy is characterized by several critical values and functions. We derive conditions under which the firm should open/close the acquisition channel and utilize/discard the remanufacturing option. By comparing the two cases, we show that expediting the remanufacturing process will help the firm to better utilize the acquisition channel and the remanufacturing option, as the optimal acquisition price and remanufacturing quantity are both higher in the case of sequential processes.

Abstract:This paper proposes a hybrid manufacturing/remanufacturing model with the financial hedging in the case where the randomness in demand is correlated with the financial markets. The provided models are mainly for those risk-averse remanufacturers who faced with random demand and yield. The aim of this paper is to maximise remanufacturer utility by purchasing financial instruments and producing new and remanufactured products. A hybrid manufacturing/remanufacturing system production planning model is first built under mean-variance framework, and then the financial hedging is integrated into the hybrid production system. There are three main findings. First, the variance of profit with financial hedging is always less than the variance of the model without financial hedging. Second, the remanufacturer with high (low) risk aversion is more likely to produce new (remanufactured) products. Third, the model without (with) financial hedging tends to produce new (remanufactured) products unless remanufacturing cost is low (high) enough. All those findings proved that financial hedging can reduce the operational uncertainty effectively and increase the proportion of remanufacturing, which will make remanufacturing firms more economical and environmentally friendly. Therefore, remanufacturing firms can consider using financial hedging to reduce operational uncertainty.

Abstract:Product returns have become a significant feature of many manufacturing systems. Because products are returned under different operational conditions, they usually require different remanufacturing effort/costs. Motivated by a project with a major energy company that manages its inventory through options of ordering and remanufacturing returned products (cores) in various condition, in this paper, we study a single-product, periodic-review inventory system with multiple types of cores. The serviceable products used to fulfill stochastic customer demand can be either manufactured from new parts or remanufactured from the cores, and the objective is to minimize the expected total discounted cost over a finite planning horizon. We show that the optimal manufacturing--remanufacturing--disposal policy has a simple structure and can be completely characterized by a sequence of constant control parameters when manufacturing and remanufacturing leadtimes are the same. To demonstrate the value of the optimal policy, we conduct a numerical study that compares its performance with two simple heuristics, namely, pull policy without and with sorting. The results show that the reduction in system cost by using the optimal policy can be significant. When manufacturing and remanufacturing leadtimes are different, we develop a heuristic method for computing the near-optimal control policy that performs quite well as demonstrated numerically.

Abstract:The intensive shortage of natural resources and the inchoate phase of automobile remanufacturing in a closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) are driving people to take cyclic manufacturing seriously. Aiming at maximizing resource utilization and produce profits, we apply an optimizing mathematical analysis to the modeling of automobile engine remanufacturing in a joint manufacturing system, in which the quantity and quality of procurement, and the demand of the market, are both uncertain. The manufacturer can either produce new products with raw materials or remanufacture the returned product taken back from customers; the raw materials are bought from two suppliers with certain probabilities of disruption in the supply. The returned products are classified into different quality levels according to the testing results after sorting, by considering the remanufacture-up-to strategy we obtained the optimal remanufacturing ratio, then the manufacturing quantity and corresponding maximized total profit of this joint system are determined. We also investigated a real-life case of auto engine remanufacturing, comparing it with the theory of optimal remanufacturing policy, and the results indicate that a material savings of more than 45% and a cost improvement of more than 40% could be achieved when the optimal remanufacturing policy of our model is implemented.

Abstract:In this paper, a mathematical model is developed to analyze the deterministic economic ordering quantities (EOQ) for inventory system of remanufactured items with outsourcing. In the remanufacturing system, the manufacturer will outsource partial remanufacturing with its insufficient capacity. With consideration of different holding cost rates for serviceable items and non-serviceable items, we derive EOQ formulas for both the manufacturing batch quantity and the recovery batch quantity. Numerical examples are illustrated the efficacy of the developed model and the procedure developed for solving the problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we address component recovery under the condition of limited resources from the OEM's (Original Equipment Manufacturer's) standpoint. We develop a linear programming model for a hybrid remanufacturing and manufacturing system for production planning problems with deterministic returns. In this paper, a data set from an OEM that both remanufactures and manufactures the products is used to demonstrate the performance of the proposed model. Subsequently, an analysis of the impact of the remanufactured product’s price and the quantity of returns on revenue and total cost will be discussed. We have found that uncertain factors of manufacturing influence the profit and uncertain factors of remanufacturing influence the production planning, such as the rate of the yield on component remanufacturing and the quantity of returns.

Abstract:In remanufacturing research, most researchers predominantly emphasised on the recovery of whole product (core) rather than at the component level due to its complexity. In contrast, this paper addresses the challenges to focus on remanufacturing through component recovery, so as to solve production planning problems of hybrid remanufacturing and manufacturing systems. To deal with the uncertainties of quality and quantity of product returns, the processing time of remanufacturing, remanufacturing costs, as well as market demands, a robust optimisation model was developed in this research and a case study was used to evaluate its effectiveness and efficiency. To strengthen this research, a sensitivity analysis of the uncertain parameters and the original equipment manufacturer's (OEM's) pricing strategy was also conducted. The research finding shows that the market demand volatility leads to a significant increase in the under fulfilment and a reduction in OEM's profit. On the other hand, recovery cost reduction, as endogenous cost saving, encourages the OEM to produce more remanufactured products with the increase in market demand. Furthermore, the OEM may risk profit loss if they raise the price of new products, and inversely, they could gain more if the price of remanufactured products is raised.
