Abstract:Objective To summarize the clinical and pathological features of carcinoid tumors.MethodsThe clinical data of 27 patients who were pathologically diagnosed as carcinoid tumors from Aug. 1990 to Jun. 2008 in our hospital were collected for a retrospective analysis, including the age of onset, distribution of disease, clinical and pathological features and the way of diagnosis. ResultsThe average onset age was (56.3 ± 16.4) years. Carcinoid tumors in 19 cases (70.4%) were in alimentary canal, of which 9 (33.3%) were rectal carcinoid tumors; 8 cases (29.6%) had non-alimentary canal carcinoid tumors, of which 4 were pulmonary carcinoid tumors; others were mediastinal, renal, ovarian and prostate carcinoid tumors. The clinical manifestations of carcinoid were always related to their primary sites. Of the 27 cases, 18 cases (66.7%) were diagnosed in preoperative endoscopic biopsy; 9 cases were diagnosed in postoperative pathology analysis. ConclusionAlimentary canal, especially rectum, is the most common site for carcinoid tumors. Carcinoid tumors have no specific clinical manifestations, thus are prone to be missed in diagnosis or be misdiagnosed. The key to diagnose carcinoid is pathological examination. An important auxiliary means to diagnose carcinoid tumors is endoscopy.
