Abstract:We report the synthesis of a poly(1-chloro-2-phenylacetylene) derivative with an electron-withdrawing substituent on the phenyl group. A combination of an N-heterocyclic carbene-based Pd catalyst (NHC-Pd) with silver trifluoromethyl sulfonate (AgOTf) formed an active catalytic system for the polymerization of 1-chloro-2-(para-substituted)-phenylacetylenes. Based on this active catalytic system, functional poly(di-substituted acetylene) (PDSA) bearing an aldehyde group (P3) was obtained in high yield. The exceptional P3 bearing a reactive aldehyde group on its side chain was used as a precursor to be subsequently modified with amines to generate a novel PDSA (P3-ppm) possessing Schiff-base functionalities in good yield.

Abstract:We report the recent progress in the preparation of functional poly(disubstituted acetylene)s (PDSAs) through post-polymerization modification routes. The metathesis polymerization of disubstituted acetylene monomers activated by Mo/W-Sn complex catalysts, which do not tolerate highly polar functionalities, was assumed to be a key step in the polymer synthetic procedures. We and other groups have explored several approaches to prepare PDSAs with latent reactive functionalities, which are inactive to Mo/W-Sn complex catalysts but can be used as highly reactive sites for post-polymerization modification. Click chemistry, Michael-type addition reactions, the use of activated esters and other strategies are demonstrated by recently published examples. These works indicate that post-polymerization modification is an efficient route to the synthesis of various functional PDSAs.

Abstract:In the past two decades, substantial advances have been made on the asymmetric alkyne functionalization by the activation of inert alkynes. However, these asymmetric transformations have so far been mostly limited to transition metal catalysis, and chiral Bronsted acid-catalyzed examples are rarely explored. Here, we report a chiral Bronsted acid-catalyzed dearomatization reaction of phenol- and indole-tethered homopropargyl amines, allowing the practical and atom-economical synthesis of a diverse array of valuable fused polycyclic enones and indolines bearing a chiral quaternary carbon stereocenter and two contiguous stereogenic centers in moderate to good yields with excellent diastereoselectivities and generally excellent enantioselectivities (up to >99% enantiomeric excess). This protocol demonstrates Bronsted acid-catalyzed asymmetric dearomatizations via vinylidene-quinone methides.

Abstract:We have developed a new series of single-component air- and moisture-stable catalysts for alkyne polymerization based on chloro-nickel and chloro-cobalt complexes containing phosphine ligands. The polymerization of p-diethynylbenzene initiated by these complexes proceeds smoothly in the presence of amines at room temperature to afford soluble π-conjugated polymers in yields as high as 81% with weight-average molecular weight up to 17 600.

Abstract:Unusual regio- and stereo-selectivity in Diels-Alder (D-A) reactions were achieved between bulky N-phenylmaleimides and anthracene derivatives. Using multiple substituents with steric hindrance on both diene and dienophile, a noticeable shift toward 1,4-addition was successfully obtained. The substrate scope in this reaction was broad and the highest yield of anti-1,4-adducts was over 90%. Novel structures of anti-1,4-adducts were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. This study not only provides the first reported method of synthesizing anti-1,4-adducts and achieving otherwise unattainable regio-and stereo-selectivity, but also elucidates the importance of combining the steric effects of two reactants to shift products toward 1,4-adducts. Moreover, the resulting 1,4-adducts could be further functionalized through their halogen groups via carbon-carbon coupling reactions.

Abstract:<section class="article-section article-section__abstract" lang="en" data-lang="en" id="section-1-en"> <h3 class="article-section__header main main">Abstract</h3> <div class="article-section__content en main"><p>Engineering low band gap π‐conjugated polymers is a burgeoning area in basic and applied research. The main synthetic challenge lies in the solubility of the materials during the chemical synthesis which precludes the advance of the field. Here, we report an unprecedented on‐surface synthesis protocol to overcome such difficulties, being able to design poly(p‐anthracene ethynylene) molecular wires on an Au(111) surface. To this aim, a quinoid anthracene precursor endowed with =CBr2 moieties is deposited and annealed to 400 K resulting in anthracene‐based polymers, with a measured electronic bandgap of 1.5 eV. High‐resolution non‐contact atomic force microscopy with a CO functionalized tip unambiguously corroborates the nature of the ethynylene bridge bond between anthracene moieties. Complementary theoretical simulations of the reaction pathways illustrate the mechanism of the chemical reaction, highlighting three major steps: dehalogenation, diffusion of surface‐stabilized carbenes, and homocoupling enabling the formation of an ethynylene bridge. Our results introduce a ground‐breaking chemical protocol to design π‐conjugated polymers based on oligoacene precursors and pave new avenues for advancing the emerging field of on‐surface synthesis.</p>

Abstract:Dianthracene with unique contorted configuration and photoactive behavior can serve as a good building block for the synthesis of robust photosensitive porous organic polymers. Herein, we present the fabrication of two hyper-cross-linked polymers (HCPs), namely HCP-DiAn and HCP-DiBrAn, by deliberately using dianthracene derivatives as monomers via the Friedel–Crafts alkylation reaction. The resultant HCP-DiBrAn displays a higher surface area compared to HCP-DiAn. Besides, HCP-DiBrAn exhibits higher photoactivity as confirmed by electrochemical techniques. Hence, HCP-DiBrAn is evaluated as a catalyst for the photocatalytic selective oxidation of organic sulfides, which shows high efficiency, selectivity, and good reusability. Mechanism investigations demonstrate that the selective formation of desired sulfoxides over HCP-DiBrAn is shaped by electron and energy transfer pathways. In addition, HCP-DiBrAn sustainably maintains excellent catalytic activity after multiple cycles as a stable heterogeneous catalyst. This project illustrates the potential of design and synthesis of dianthracene-based robust porous materials for advanced applications.

Abstract:Unusual anti-1,4-adducts of anthracene derivatives and anti-adducts of inert arenes with rigid scaffolds have been obtained via AlCl3-assisted Diels-Alder reaction in good to excellent yields under mild conditions. Further derivation of 1,4-adducts gave π-conjugated polymers which could act as sensors of explosive species. This highly efficient synthesis method provides versatile approaches to solid-state emissive π-conjugated polymers.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) structures with suitable electron-withdrawing groups are useful building blocks for developing optical and electron-transporting materials. Here, we report the application of a double benzannulation process to the syntheses of PAH diimides with enlarged π-frameworks featuring a central anthracene moiety. The preparations are realized by copper-catalyzed [4+2] cycloaddition of ethynyl-substituted aromatic dicarboximide to 2,5-bis(phenylethynyl)terephthalaldehyde, followed by intramolecular photocyclization or direct arylation via Heck cross coupling. A central symmetric benzo[1,2-k:4,5-k']-bis(fluoranthene)-3,4,12,13-tetracarboxyl diimide (BFDI) is acquired, with the single crystal structure revealing its completely planar polycyclic skeleton. Such a shape-persistent PAH expectedly exhibits a tendency to stack face-to-face and forms J-aggregates. Moreover, BFDI can be difunctionalized site-selectively at the reactive 9 and 10 positions of the anthracene unit and then applied to prepare conjugated polymers. When coupled with 1,4-diketopyrrolo[3,4-c]-pyrrole (DPP) via thiophene and dithiophene linkers, two polymers with significantly broadened absorption bands extended to the near-infrared regime are obtained, evidencing the effective π-conjugative extension ability of BFDI unit.

Abstract:Anthracene has served as an important building block of conjugated polymers with the connecting positions playing a crucial role for the electronic structures. Herein, anthracene units have been coupled through their 2,7-carbons to develop an unprecedented, conjugated polymer, namely, poly(2,7-anthrylene) featuring additional peri-fused porphyrin edges. The synthesis starts from a 2,7-dibromo-9-nickel(II) porphyrinyl-anthracene as the pivotal precursor. Polymerization is achieved by an AA-type Yamamoto coupling, followed by a polymer-analogous oxidative cyclodehydrogenation to obtain a peri-fusion between porphyrin and anthracene moieties. Although further cyclodehydrogenation between the repeating units cannot be achieved in solution, the thermal treatment of the precursor polymer derived from 2,7-dibromo-9-porphyrinyl-anthracene on a metal surface realizes the full cyclodehydrogenation. The difference between solution and on-surface reactivity can be rationalized by the larger dihedral angle between repeat units in solution, which is reduced under the pronounced interaction with the metal surface. The peri-fusion in the title polymer gives rise to a narrow electronic band gap optical absorptions extending far into the near-infrared region. Oligomeric models are synthesized as well to support the analyses of the electronic and photophysical properties.

Abstract:Attachment of the proline-derived ligand 5 to two types of polymers, i.e. aminomethylated polystyrene resin and respectively MeO-PEG, was achieved via a succinyl linkage from the 4-hydroxy group. Both of the supported ligands (7 and 8) were proved to be highly active with good enantioselectivity (up to 90% ee) for the catalyzed asymmetric diethylzinc addition to aldehydes. The insoluble polymer-supported catalyst could be easily recovered and was reusable for several consecutive catalytic runs without significant loss in enantioselectivity.

Abstract:The development of chiral ligands with privileged scaffolds plays an important role in transition-metal-catalyzed asymmetric reactions. Herein we present anthracene-photodimer-derived chiral monophosphine ligand <b>1</b>, which features dual chirality and a rigid scaffold. Abstract:A hitherto unknown class of C4-symmetric Caryl−Cβ (C3, C8, C13, C18) axially chiral porphyrins has been synthesized and the application of their iridium (Ir) complexes in catalytic asymmetric C(sp3)−H functionalization is documented. Cyclotetramerization of enantioenriched axially chiral 2-hydroxymethyl-3-naphthyl pyrroles under mild acidic conditions affords, after oxidation with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ), the C4-symmetric α,α,α,α-atropenantiomer as an only isolable diastereomer. Both regioisomeric Ir(Por*)(CO)(Cl) complexes catalyze the carbene C−H insertion reaction affording the same enantiomer, albeit with slight difference in enantioselectivity. With the optimum Ir-complex 3e, the 2-substituted arylacetic acid derivatives were generated from diazo compounds and cyclohexadiene in excellent yields and enantioselectivities.

Abstract:Acridine derivatives have exhibited great application prospects in organic photovoltaic devices. An efficient and atomically economical synthetic method was developed for the production of acridines from anthranils using arylboronic acids. This protocol features no catalysts, good functional group tolerance, and operational simplicity. This catalyst-free process afforded various acridines in moderate to good yields, providing an efficient platform for the investigation of untapped reactions at high temperatures.
