Abstract:Objective:To review the surgical treatment of six limbs of four patients with popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES). Methods: From year 2004 to 2007, four patients (six limbs) with underwent surgery PAES in our hospital, and the clinical data were collected and analyzed. Results: There were four male patients with a mean age of 24.2 years (15-32 years), and two patients were found to have bilateral involvement. Intermittent claudication was the most frequent presenting symptom. One patient had Delaney’s type Ⅱ PAES and the other three patients had Delaney’s type Ⅲ PAES. Popliteal artery release surgery was performed in all six limbs, and this procedure was combined with a reversed long saphenous vein bypass graft in one limb because the popliteal artery was occluded. After a median follow-up of 10 months (30 days to 2 years), all patients were cured of their symptoms. Conclusion: Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome is a rare but important cause of peripheral vascular insufficiency especially in young patients. Early diagnosis and surgical intervention is imperative for good operative outcome and to prevent limb loss.
