Strategies and Tactics in Developing Petroleum Substitutes

Abstract:Finding alternatives to petroleum is a step the energy industry must take to ensure its energy security.In this article,the authors discuss,in brief,some important questions associated with the development of petroleum alternative development strategies and tactics,which are covered in the authors′ new book An Overview of Petroleum Alternatives.The questions discussed in this article include the history of petroleum alternatives;petroleum alternative technologies and measures;technical developments associated with alternative energy sources such as unconventional oil,coal,natural gas,biomass energy,nuclear power,solar energy and wind energy;the roadmap for developing petroleum alternatives;the prospect for hydrogen fuel;the development of alternative fuels-powered vehicles;the impact of alternative energy sources on the environment;the assessment of the technical economics of petroleum alternatives and energy efficiencies ;the assessment of macro scenarios of petroleum alternative derivatives.At the end of the article,the authors summarize the key problems in developing petroleum alternatives.
