Abstract:Considering the current massage effect evaluation of massage chair mainly depends on a small number of subjective's subject evaluation, which lacks objectivity. In this paper, a massage effect evaluation system based on Electroencephalogram (EEG) is proposed to evaluate the massage effect by measuring the fatigue state. After the original EEG is processed by bandpass filtering and Hilbert-Huang Transform(HHT) denoising, wavelet packet decomposition is used to extract the energy features. Train Support Vector Machine(SVM), Neural Network(NN) and Light Gradient Boosting Machine(LightGBM) models. Then fuse models under Stacking framework and finally estimate the fatigue state of the human body, so as to evaluate the massage effect and guide the parameter design of the massage chair. Experimental results verify the feasibility of this method.

Abstract:Massage has been widely applied to improve health and reduce stress. However, the performance difference between hands-on treatment and treatment by mechanical devices has been little mentioned. Therefore, the main aim of this paper is to investigate a subject's EEG performance under massage treatment applied by hand and treatment applied by mechanical devices. Massage was applied to four acupoints for three minutes each. The massage acupoint sequence was from left Jian-wai-yu, right Jian-wai-yu, left Zuo-fei-yu, and finally right Zuo-fei-yu. An EEG system of 32 channels was used. Twenty-four volunteers, mainly college students, were enrolled. EEG rhythm powers of each massage sessions were derived. Two-way ANOVA revealed that there were also significant interactions between the massage stage and the massage type on delta ( P < 0.01 ) , theta ( P < 0.05 ) , and beta rhythms ( P < 0.01 ) , and there were significant differences at different stages for the mechanical massage group ( F = 5.557 , P < 0.01 ). The mechanical massage group had more significant differences than the hands-on group for stage coherence of around coherence on alpha rhythm. Further rhythm power scalp topography between two massage methods is also investigated.

A Pilot Study on Ergonomics Evaluation Model of Massage Chair Performance Based on sEMG

Abstract:The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the effects on the relaxation of muscular fatigue using an automated massage chair. Two healthy participants performed the static standard push --up（SPU） exercise respectively before and after recovering from sitting still without massage and beat massage on the massage chair. The sEMG signals were recorded during SPU exercises. An ergo- nomics evaluation model was developed based on sEMG,in which experimental data were analyzed by indexes. Results show the effects on the relaxation of erector spine fatigue from beat massage are better than that from sitting still. In this respect, the feasibility of the model on massage chair ergonom ics evaluation was verified.

Abstract:The smart wheelchair is a service robot that can be used as a means of transportation for the elderly and the disabled. The patients were given an intelligent wheelchair designed by electroencephalogram (EEG), which was used for more than 8 hours and tested continuously for 1 month. By ridit analysis, the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (U = 3.72, P < 0.01). The scores of visual analogue scale (VAS) and joint ground visuality (JGV) in the observation group were significantly better than those in the control group. The modules of physiological function (PF), physical pain (PP), overall health (OH), vitality (VT), social function (SF), emotional function (EF), and mental health (MH) in the SF-36 scores of the two groups were significantly improved (P < 0.05), and the improvement of each module in the observation group was significantly better than that in the control group (P < 0.05). The levels of serum IL-6, IL-10, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the two groups were significantly improved (P < 0.05), and the improvement of serum IL-6, IL-10, and SOD in the observation group was significantly better than that in the control group (P < 0.05). It is suggested that neural engineering based on EEG characteristics can be well applied in comfort industrial design.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To verify whether the mechanical massage using massage chairs and binaural beats (brain massage) affect the mental fatigue recovery and cognitive enhancements.METHODS: 25 healthy adults used massage chairs that could provide mechanical massage and binaural beats (brain massage) for 20 min. Mental fatigue and cognitive function were assessed before and after receiving brain massage using electroencephalogram (EEG) and 5 prolonged cognitive tests.RESULTS: When a person received a brain massage on the massage chair, the decrease in mental fatigue was statistically significant compared to taking a rest or receiving a mechanical massage only on the massage chair. In addition, sustained attention, verbal short-term and long-term memory and non-verbal long-term memory were statistically significantly increased after using brain massage.CONCLUSION: Brain massage (mechanical massage and binaural beats) are effective in reducing mental fatigue and improving the cognitive function.

Abstract:As an advanced interaction mode, the gesture has been widely used for the human-computer interaction (HCI). The paper proposes a comfort evaluation model based on the mechanical energy expenditure (MEE) and the mechanical efficiency (ME) to predict the comfort of gestures. The proposed comfort evaluation model takes nineteen muscles and seven degrees of freedom into consideration based on the data of muscles and joints and is capable of simulating the MEE and the ME of both static and dynamic gestures. The comfort scores (CSs) can be therefore calculated by normalizing and assigning different decision weights to the MEE and the ME. Compared with the traditional comfort prediction methods based on measurement, on the one hand, the proposed comfort evaluation model makes it possible for providing a quantitative value for the comfort of gestures without using electromyography (EMG) or other measuring devices; on the other hand, from the ergonomic perspective, the results provide an intuitive indicator to predict which act has the higher risk of fatigue or injury for joints and muscles. Experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed model. According to the comparison result among the proposed comfort evaluation model, the model based on the range of motion (ROM) and the model based on the method for movement and gesture assessment (MMGA), a slight difference can be found due to the ignorance of dynamic gestures and the relative kinematic characteristics during the movements of dynamic gestures. Therefore, considering the feedback of perceived effects and gesture recognition rate in HCI, designers can achieve a better optimization for the gesture design by making use of the proposed comfort evaluation model.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of human-vehicle tactile interaction experience evaluation, this paper proposed a method based on the combination of EEG signals and subjective scoring evaluation. Generally, the evaluation method of human-machine interaction experience is based on the user's subjective evaluation. This kind of method causes the inaccuracy of the evaluation because different people have different judgments on feelings. This paper built a simulated driving environment, collects the EEG signals of the subjects in the interaction process of a car touchpad in different modes, and preprocesses, extracts and analyzes the signals. Then combining the user's subjective score evaluation to achieve an effective combination of quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis. The experimental results show that different modes of the tactile interaction system will affect users to generate EEG signals with different characteristics. The method of subjective and objective fusion can make the evaluation of human-vehicle tactile interaction experience more comprehensive.

Abstract:To efficiently evaluate the influences on human body comfortableness under different vibrative condition, the paper comprehensively applied the surface electromyography (SEMG) and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technology and obtained the relationship between mean power frequency (MPF) and regional tissue oxygen saturation (rSO2) and acceleration, frequency, time and amplitude through experiments on the variations of human body SEMG and muscle oxygenation under vibrative condition; analyzed and compared rules of variations of partial electromyography of the biceps brachii muscle, erector spinae muscle, biceps femories and tissue blood oxygen saturation depending on the changes of vibration parameter. With the analysis of the subjective evaluation, the author proposed the evaluation methods of human body comfortableness under different vibrate condition by muscle oxygenation and SEMG parameter. The study, with a certain degree of universalized quality, not only provides a new referential ergonomic criterion for the man-machine interface design of important facilities like tank and aircrafts, but can also be applied in the design evaluation of transportation vehicles and the evaluation of comfortableness of work environment.

Abstract:The overall comfort of train passenger is influenced by many environmental factors such as vibration, noise and pressure. However, the couple effect of these influencing factors causes the difficulty in evaluating the overall comfort. This study revealed the potential comfort degradation mechanisms in high-speed railway environments and proposed a machine learning evaluation model to assess passenger comfort. Here, the subjective overall comfort ratings and the electroencephalography (EEG) of twenty passengers were collected in the field tests. Compared with passengers who were in a state of comfort, the brain areas (BA6/13/20/24/31/40/47) of passengers who felt uncomfortable were all significantly activated in the beta band. Based on the neural signature above, three related human reactions when passengers feel uncomfortable were recognized, including perceiving the environment, inducing negative emotions, and finally producing body movement intention. To assess the overall comfort of train passengers, six kinds of features extracted from EEG signals were used to train an evaluation model based on the LightGBM algorithm. This work offers a neurological explanation for the mechanisms of degradation of overall comfort and provides a novel and effective method to assess it.

Abstract:Abstract The study is to innovate an evaluation model of medical nursing bed and verify indicators by triangulation of subjective feelings, eye movement and electroencephalography (EEG). The underlying theory is Kansei Engineering that is the technology to measure and transform consumers’ perceptions of products into design elements. Kansei Engineering comprises external physiological sensory measurement and intrinsic psychological susceptibility measurement. The evaluation of medical nursing bed should measure subjective and objective data. The current evaluation method of medical nursing bed is very subjective and cannot be tested objectively. It is rationale to apply Kansei Engineering in medical nursing bed evaluation comprised subjective feelings and eye movement with electroencephalography. The methodology is the experimental research in which four design proposals of medical nursing bed were compared by 20 participants. Data collection adopted Tobii X2 eye tracker and NeurOne EEG recording system except subjective feelings. D-lab, ERGOLAB, and EEGLAB was applied to process data of eye movement and EEG. Correlation of triangulation was analyzed for criterion-related validity. Cronbach’s Alpha was used as a measure of internal consistency for reliability. Findings indicated design proposal 2 contained a rounded rectangular and line surface organically combined was optimal. Triangulation was supported as indicators for more objective and persuasive evaluation of medical nursing beds. Implications for practice will be applied in NCC Medical Co., LTD, Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, Shanghai Ying Hand Medical Equipment Co., Ltd, and WUTRON SAPACE in Shanghai DianJi University. Implications for follow-up research is in proceeding with more participants.

Immediate Effect of Massage Using a Massage Chair on Autonomic Balance in Adult Men and Women: An Observational Study

Abstract:Objectives The aim of this study was to examine the immediate impact of a massage chair intervention on homeostasis and the balance of the autonomic nervous system in individuals aged 20 to 64. Methods This study was a single-center, prospective, single-arm, investigator-initiated observational study. Non-underweight adults without significant health concerns underwent a 40-minute massage chair intervention. Measurements of heart rate variability, functional near-infrared spectroscopy, and vital signs were conducted before and after the intervention. Additionally, participants completed the Mibyeong questionnaire and a satisfaction survey. Results A 40-minute massage chair session led to a notable decrease in average heart rate and low frequency to high frequency (LF/HF) ratio, coupled with an increase in root mean square of the successive differences (RMSSD) and standard deviation of NN interval (SDNN). No adverse reactions were noted. Subjects with elevated sympathetic nerve activity exhibited a reduction in LF/HF ratio, whereas those with heightened parasympathetic activity demonstrated an increase in LF/HF ratio post-intervention. Conclusions The findings indicate that the massage chair intervention has the potential to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promote blood pressure homeostasis and autonomic nervous system balance. However, further research over a more extended period is crucial to validate these conclusions.

Abstract:As one aspect of ergonomics, comfort is playing a significant role in product design with the development of people's awareness of health. In this paper, a brief review of concepts of sitting comfort is presented. The methods of sitting comfort evaluation are mainly divided into subjective evaluation and objective evaluation. Four questionnaires are introduced in the field of subjective evaluation, and a new questionnaire is designed to evaluate massage chair comfort. Body pressure distribution as one of the objective evaluation is reported, which involves several parameters, rational body pressure distribution profiles, and systems for measurement. Next, a conceptual framework of system for massage chair sitting comfort evaluation is presented by a model of sitting comfort evaluation index.

Satisfaction and Feasibility Evaluation of an Electronic Massager-Expert Manipulative Massage Automation (EMMA): A Pilot Study

Abstract:Background: Electronic massagers have gained popularity for their non-invasive and cost-effective approach to healthcare. However, existing electronic massagers require manual manipulation, leading to inconsistency. Objective: To investigate the feasibility and acceptability of the Electronic Massager-Expert Manipulative Massage Automation (EMMA) among the American population. Methods: A single-arm pilot study was conducted at Mayo Clinic Rochester campus. Participants received massage therapy with the EMMA treatment model and completed a demographics and Satisfaction Survey Questionnaire. Data were collected using REDCap, and statistical analysis was performed. Results: Twenty healthy volunteers (13 women, 7 men; median age, 47 years) participated and completed the intervention within 2 weeks. No adverse events were reported. Overall, the acceptability and satisfaction of massage utilizing EMMA were high, with all participants finding the study worthwhile, willing to participate again, and willing to recommend the study to others. Regarding the overall experience, 65.0% reported a better-than-expected experience. Responses to open-ended post-treatment questions showed that most participants enjoyed the warmth (35%), pressure (25%), and relaxation (20%) provided by EMMA, with the majority suggesting no changes or improvements were needed. However, some participants expressed a desire for an expanded massage area (20%). Conclusions: This study suggests that the EMMA massager has high acceptability and satisfaction among healthy volunteers, thus demonstrating its feasibility. However, further research is needed to optimize EMMA and assess its clinical effectiveness.
Effect of a massage chair (BFM-M8040) on neck and shoulder pain in office workers: A randomized controlled clinical trial

Abstract:Background With the increasing work-related musculoskeletal disorders, neck and shoulder pain among office workers has also increased. That said, this randomized controlled trial aimed to seek the potential effects of a massage chair (BFR-M8040) on neck and shoulder pain among office workers. Methods This was conducted at the Wonkwang University Gwangju Medical Center from April 2022 to December 2022. Sixty adult participants were randomly allocated. The mean age of male participants was 39.63 ± 8.09 years while female participants was 43.52 ± 8.27; women participated the most (86.67%). The control group received basic physical treatments, including a 10-min heat treatment for deep regions and a 10-min hot pack for the areas on the neck and shoulder of the complained discomfort. The experimental group received the same treatment as the control group and added 20 min of the electric massage chair's PEMF Neck Mode (XD module 3) (BFR-M8040, Bodyfriend Co., Ltd.). The participants received treatments twice per week. The primary outcome was measured using the numerical rating scale and the Korean version of the neck disability index. And the secondary outcome was measured using pressure pain threshold, range of motion, the Korean occupational stress scale, the Korean version of the Euro-quality of life-5 dimension, and safety evaluation. Results Fifty-eight participants completed a 6-week follow-up and analyzed (29 in the control group and 29 in the experimental group). There was a significant decrease in the experiment group in both scales for primary outcome measures. For secondary outcome measures, statistically significant increases were observed in pressure pain threshold. The experimental group only showed a slight increase in the quality-of-life measures. There were no reported adverse events. Conclusion The benefit of using a massage chair (BFR-M8040) was verified to alleviate neck and shoulder pain among office workers; future studies could involve participants from other countries for further investigation.

Abstract:There is an increasing awareness among the populace of the need for regular health check-up to detect diseases in their early stages and thereby administer treatments in a timely fashion. However, commercially available physiological signal monitoring devices, which may offer clues on the onset of diseases, are time-consuming, far from user friendly and limited in their applications. We design an e-caring chair that combines six modular physiological signal measurement instruments into a single unit, enabling users to simultaneously measure the blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, height, weight and body fat percentage, and display the results and simple diagnoses in real time. The e-caring chair further allows for easy integration of additional physiological signal measuring devices, speedy measurements and long term monitoring of any trends that may emerge, making it easier for users to be alerted to physiological changes in the body without the need to enlist assistance from medical personnel. In this paper, we describe how this e-caring chair can be placed in several different environments for different purposes.

According to the three components of product experience: aesthetic pleasure, attribution of meaning. and emotional response, using approaches such as market Research, user Interview, persona,field experiment to do users' affective experience test of a typical type of massage chair which produced in China.Because of the specific of the affective experience, defying five persona hypothesis by using the approach of persona analyse. After Persona hypothesis verified, building Persona (a model of each typical segment). At last doing affective experience analyse of the massage chair according the definition by product experience. The way I do affective analyse can keep using in affective experience research later and designers can do further researches such as design strategy for massage chair based on conclusions of this paper.

Abstract:Objective To compare emotional responses elicited by four cosmetic products on different sensory modalities (smell, visual, and touch), and analyze the link between objective instrumental analysis results and subjective evaluation of participants occurring within dimensional valence‐arousal model of emotions. Methods In this study, four cream products exhibiting variations in olfactory perception, visual appearance and perception usability were selected. Electroencephalography (EEG) and a subjective emotion scale were used to assess participants' emotional responses during the sensory experience of utilizing the creams. Results The study revealed that the objective emotional valence and arousal of different cream products exhibited certain variations at distinct stages of usage. The trend of valence differences induced by different products measured by EEG at the same stage was almost as same as measured by subjective evaluation. The correspondence between the valence measured by EEG closely approximated that obtained through subjective evaluation across various products at distinct stages of usage. These findings demonstrate a significant correlation between EEG‐based valence and subjective valence, however, no such relationship was observed for arousal. Conclusion This study demonstrates the feasibility of using EEG as a method to assess emotions elicited by various stages of cosmetics application, including smelling, looking, rubbing, and afterfeel. This technique serves as a valuable supplement to traditional methods for examining emotional responses by providing more objective evidence.
