Abstract:UML class diagrams constitute a key artifact in the conceptual modeling phase and their quality can have a significant impact on the quality of the system. The structural complexity measure is one of the most important measures to evaluate the quality of a UML class diagram. This paper uses weighted class dependence graphs to represent a given class diagrams, and then presents a structure complexity measure for the UML class diagrams based on entropy distance. It considers complexity of both classes and relationships between the classes, and presents rules for transforming complexity value of classes and different kinds of relations into a weighted class dependence graphs. This method of measure has many good properties; therefore it can measure the structure complexity of class diagrams objectively.

Abstract:UML is a good tool to represent ontologies. When using UML for ontology development, one of the principal goals is to assure the quality of ontologies. UML class diagrams provide a static modeling capability that is well suited for representing ontologies, so the structural complexity of a UML class diagram is one of the most important measures to evaluate the quality of the ontologies. This paper uses weighted class dependence graphs to represent given class diagrams, and then presents a structure complexity measure for the UML class diagrams based on entropy distance. It considers complexity of both classes and relationships between the classes, and presents rules for transforming complexity value of classes and different kinds of relations into weighted class dependence graphs. This method can measure the structure complexity of class diagrams objectively.

Abstract:To support the automatic identification of important classes in a system, a dependence structure analysis-based approach for measuring the importance of classes is proposed. This approach consists of two steps. First, a graph model is used to represent the dependence relationships between classes, including class-class inheritance dependence, class-attribute interaction dependence, and class-method interaction dependence. Then, PageRank, HITS (hyperlink-induced topic search), and Betweenness Centrality algorithms are applied to measure the importance of classes by globally analyzing the dependence structure among classes. In this approach, only the information from the analysis and design stages of software development is needed. Therefore, it can be used to identify important classes at the early stages of software development. The experimental results show that, when used to identify important classes, the proposed approach produces different results from those obtained using simple approaches.

Abstract:Since UML does not provide any guidance for users to select a proper extension pattern, users are not able to assure the quality of extended UMLs, such as understandability, when they focus on their expression power. A metric of understandability for extended UMLs is proposed, which bases on measuring the deviation of understandability between the extended UMLs and the standard UML in their metamodel level. Our proposal can be used to compare different extended UMLs with the same expression power on the understandability characteristic. Moreover, the proposal can guide users to select an appropriate extension pattern to achieve their goal. We give the definition of the metric of understandability and the empirical validation of the proposed metric. A case from a real project is used to explain the application of the proposed metric.

Abstract:UML has been widely used for modeling applications and it changes continuously. In this situation, it is reasonable to analyze its evolution. This paper presents an approach to analyzing the evolution of the UML metamodel by using complex network and information entropy technologies. The approach can provide insight into the constructive mechanism and future trends of UML, and potentially form the basis for eliciting improved or novel laws of UML evolution. The study is a contribution for analyzing the evolution of not only the UML metamodel but also other metamodels like the UML metamodel.

Abstract:In software engineering, class diagrams are often used to describe the system's class structures in Unified Modelling Language (UML). A class diagram, as a graph, is a collection of static declarative model elements, such as classes, interfaces, and the relationships of their connections with each other. In this paper, class graphs are examined within several Java software systems provided by Sun and IBM, and some new features are found. For a large-scale Java software system, its in-degree distribution tends to an exponential distribution, while its out-degree and degree distributions reveal the power-law behaviour. And then a directed preferential-random model is established to describe the corresponding degree distribution features and evolve large-scale Java software systems.
Measure Of Layer Centrality In Multilayer Network

Abstract:Many real-world complex systems consist of a set of basic units that are connected by different kinds of relationships. All types of such systems can be described by a multilayer network, where each link represents different types of interaction among the same set of nodes. In this paper, we present a general framework to characterize the influences (centrality) of layers. Furthermore, we propose two measures for layer centrality in terms of network connectivity under this framework. The basic idea of our measures consists in assigning more centrality value to layers that contribute more connectivity in a multilayer network. In other words, layers are more influential if more centrality values of links are assigned to them. We validate the measures on a real-world dataset of air transportation multilayer network and find that the measures are able to extract novel and useful information from the dataset.

Abstract:UML class diagram layout is an important task in software visualization to enhance people's comprehension about the systems. In this paper, we describe a novel UML class diagram layout algorithm, called rank-directed method, which captures the difference in relationships among classes and stresses significant classes. As a layout algorithm, rank-directed method supports the clustering of classes according to the inherent characteristics of classes. To recognize the significance of classes, we applied PageRank algorithms through abstracting relationships among different classes as the link among web pages. We assume that important classes have more relationships with other classes. To emphasize the important classes, rank-directed method adopts a sub graph layout method based on clustering of classes. We have developed a UML class diagram layout platform to evaluate our method. Our evaluation shows that rank-directed method could effectively recognize the important classes and layout the class diagram with higher readability than traditional layout methods do.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new method for measuring the complexity of software systems based on complex network theory. We first construct the complex network model for software system. Then, the complexity of a homogeneous system is defined according to the entropy theory. With the experiments on open source software systems, we show that our method can reveal the complexity on different aspects of software systems,such as inheritance and understanding complexity.

Abstract:The structure entropy is an important index to illuminate the structure property of the complex network. Most of the existing structure entropies are based on the degree distribution of the complex network. But the structure entropy based on the degree can not illustrate the structure property of the weighted networks. In order to study the structure property of the weighted networks, a new structure entropy of the complex networks based on the betweenness is proposed in this paper. Comparing with the existing structure entropy, the proposed method is more reasonable to describe the structure property of the complex weighted networks.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Context</h3><p>The reuse of software design has been an important issue of software reuse. UML class diagrams are widely applied in software design and has become DE factor standard. As a result, the reuse of UML class diagrams has received more attention. With the increasing number of class diagrams stored in reuse repository, their retrieval becomes a time-consuming job. The clustering can narrow down retrieval range and improve the retrieval efficiency. But few efforts have been done in clustering UML class diagrams. This paper tries to propose a clustering approach for UML class diagrams.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Objective</h3><p>This paper proposes a two-level clustering of UML class diagrams, namely, semantic clustering and structural clustering. The UML class diagrams stored in reuse repository are clustered into a few domains based on semantics in the first level and a few categories based on structure in the second level.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Method</h3><p>We propose a clustering algorithm named <em>CUFS</em>, in which the idea of partitioning and hierarchical clustering is combined and feature similarity is proposed for the similarity measure between two clusters in order to merge clusters. A better feature representation of a cluster, namely, feature class diagram, is proposed in this paper. In order to form each sub-cluster, the semantic and structural similarities between UML class diagrams are defined, respectively.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>A series of experimental results show that, the proposed feature similarity measure not only speeds up the clustering process, but also expresses the closeness degree between clusters for merging clusters. The proposed algorithm shows a good clustering quality and efficiency under the condition of different size and distribution of UML class diagrams.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusion</h3><p>It is concluded that the proposed two-level clustering method considers both semantics and structure contained in a class diagram, which can flexibly adapt to different clustering requirements. Also, the proposed clustering algorithm performs better than other related algorithms, regardless of in semantic, structural and hybrid clustering.</p>

Abstract:Classes are the basic modules in object-oriented (OO) software, which consist of attributes and methods. Thus, in OO environment, the cohesion is mainly about the tightness of the attributes and methods of classes. This paper discusses the relationships between attributes and attributes, attributes and methods, methods and methods of a class based on dependence analysis. Then the paper presents methods to compute these dependencies. Based on these, the paper proposes a method to measure the class cohesion, which satisfies the properties that a good measurement should have. The approach overcomes the limitations of previous class cohesion measures, which consider only one or two of the three relationships in a class.

Abstract:Meta-models and meta-modeling are becoming popular as one of techniques in the main steam of software development, resulting from the fact that general modeling languages such as UML become ubiquitous. Firstly, this paper analyzes the features of meta-model architecture and corresponding requirements, including especially meta-model assessment, of managing meta-information. Taking OMG' s four level meta-model architecture as an example, UML meta-model, as the core part of the architecture, is the focus of debating among researchers and practitioners. The situation proves the necessity of UML meta-models measurement. The hallmarks in terms of meta and 00 metrics provide the feasibility of the evaluation. Secondly, a quantitative method, measuring the stability from the internal perspective and design quality from external perspective, is applied to assess 5 UML meta-models. The results of the assessment are then analyzed in comparison with related subjective comments on UML evolution. The promising application of the method is presented as a conclusion.

Abstract:Numerous and various complex networks have emerged with the development of science and technology. Finding the critical links in complex networks is very important for attackers and defenders. In order to evaluate the importance of links complex network links, it is crucial to choose the criteria comprehensively, objectively and independently. This paper presents an importance evaluation scheme to mine the critical links based on entropy weights and grey relational analysis. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our scheme in compassion with typical methods.

Abstract:Modeling for a system is a very important activity in software development. A model with high quality should not only include the description of functional attributes of the system, i.e., what the system can do, but also the description of non-functional attributes, i.e., what is the quality of the system. Although the de facto modeling approaches and tools adequately support modeling for the functional attributes, they neglect modeling for the non-functional attributes, especially, on how to integrate the description of the functional and non-functional attributes in one model and provide methods to verify some properties about the non-functional attributes. In the paper, UML Class Diagram is extended to describe the non-functional attributes by adding the model elements, i.e., the non-functional attributes notation and the constraints table. An approach is given to verify the consistency and satisfiability of the non-functional attributes in the extended UML Class Diagram. An example is used to demonstrate our proposal and a tool that supports the description and verification of non-functional attributes in UML is introduced.

Abstract:In object-oriented systems, a single class consists of attributes and methods and its cohesion denotes the degree of relatedness among these elements. To quantify the cohesiveness of a class, a large number of measures that only depict method–attribute reference relationships have been proposed in last decade. However, the flow-dependence relationships among attributes, the direction of method–attribute references, and the potential dependence relationships among the elements in the class are ignored. To address this problem, this paper first depicts four types of explicit dependence relationships and uses a class element dependence graph to represent all dependencies among the elements in a class. Then, a dependence matrix that reflects the degree of direct dependence and indirect dependence among the elements in a class is computed. Finally, a more precise cohesion measure for classes is proposed.
Characterizing the Complexity of Weighted Networks via Graph Embedding and Point Pattern Analysis

Abstract:We propose a new metric to characterize the complexity of weighted complex networks. Weighted complex networks represent a highly organized interactive process, for example, co-varying returns between stocks (financial networks) and coordination between brain regions (brain connectivity networks). Although network entropy methods have been developed for binary networks, the measurement of non-randomness and complexity for large weighted networks remains challenging. We develop a new analytical framework to measure the complexity of a weighted network via graph embedding and point pattern analysis techniques in order to address this unmet need. We first perform graph embedding to project all nodes of the weighted adjacency matrix to a low dimensional vector space. Next, we analyze the point distribution pattern in the projected space, and measure its deviation from the complete spatial randomness. We evaluate our method via extensive simulation studies and find that our method can sensitively detect the difference of complexity and is robust to noise. Last, we apply the approach to a functional magnetic resonance imaging study and compare the complexity metrics of functional brain connectivity networks from 124 patients with schizophrenia and 103 healthy controls. The results show that the brain circuitry is more organized in healthy controls than schizophrenic patients for male subjects while the difference is minimal in female subjects. These findings are well aligned with the established sex difference in schizophrenia.

Abstract:In order to evaluate the design quality of the UML, understanding meta-classes is a key activity as they are the primary weapons by which the UML specifies the application domains. The paper introduces taxonomic patterns for clustering the UML meta-classes based on the observation of their evolution and fitness. The result sets of the patterns assist in finding the evidence of the concerns about the UML design and quality. It not only helps to find out problematic meta-classes, possible design defects of the UML and the inconsistency between the UML meta-models and the application domains; but also provides valuable information for guiding the development and evaluation of the UML. The work can be the basis of further quality analysis of the UML meta-models.
