Abstract:We have studied structural phase transitions in high quality underdoped La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ single crystals using high resolution x-ray scattering techniques. Critical properties associated with the continuous High Temperature Tetragonal (HTT, $I4/mmm$) to Middle Temperature Orthorhombic (MTO, $Cmca$) phase transition were investigated in single crystal samples with x=0.125, 0.095, and 0.08 and we find that all behavior is consistent with three dimensional XY criticality, as expected from theory. Power law behavior in the orthorhombic strain, 2(a-b)/(a+b), is observed over a remarkably wide temperature range, spanning most of the MTO regime in the phase diagram. Low temperature measurements investigating the Low Temperature Tetragonal (LTT, $P4_{2}/ncm$) phase, below the strongly discontinuous MTO$\to$LTT phase transition, in x=0.125 and x=0.095 samples show that the LTT phase is characterized by relatively broad Bragg scattering, compared with that observed at related wavevectors in the HTT phase. This shows that the LTT phase is either an admixture of tetragonal and orthorhombic phases, or that it is orthorhombic with very small orthorhombic strain, consistent with the ``less orthorhombic" low temperature structure previously reported in mixed La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x-y}$Ba$_y$CuO$_4$ single crystals. We compare the complex temperature-composition phase diagram for the location of structural and superconducting phase transitions in underdoped La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ and find good agreement with results obtained on polycrystalline samples.

Abstract:The Nd-doped cuprate La2-y-xNdySrxCuO4 displays a first-order phase transition at T-d (= 74 K for x = 0.10, y = 0.60) to a low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) phase. A magnetic field H applied II the a-axis leads to an increase in Td, whereas Td is decreased when H \\ c. The field couples to the LTO-LTT instability in an anisotropic way that is not understood Related anisotropic effects are observed in the uniform susceptibility and the in-plane magnetoresistance.

Abstract:We report measurements on resistivity, thermopower, and magnetization as a function of temperature and magnetic field on single crystalline ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{4}{\mathrm{Ru}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{10}$ grown by the floating-zone method. The in-plane and $c$-axis resistivities, magnetization, and the thermopower were found to exhibit a step feature at low temperatures (below roughly $30\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$), accompanied by hysteresis behavior when the in-plane field was swept up and down from below $10\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{kOe}$ to above $20\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{kOe}$. In particular, the sharp increase in the thermopower with increasing in-plane magnetic field at low temperatures has not been observed previously in layered transition metal oxides. We propose that these observations can be explained by the existence of a transition between two electronic states in ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{4}{\mathrm{Ru}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{10}$ in low and high in-plane magnetic fields, respectively, and the alignment of domains is responsible for the emergence of a different electronic state as the in-plane field is ramped up.

Abstract:The Peierls instability in the quasi-2-d La2-x(Ba,Sr)xCuO4 is reexamined by taking the weak interlayer coupling into account. A two-step Peierls transition theory is developed, the general misunderstandings on the Peierls instability are therefore clarified, and a number of experimental anomalies observed in La2CuO4 are well explained. By suggesting an additional change of space group symmetries at the lower transition point, the calculated band structures are also intepreted. The possibility of CDW coexistence with the high-Tc superconductivity, the possible evidence for the 3-d superconductivity of the high-Tc materials are discussed with this theory.

Abstract:Polycrystalline samples LaBa2Cu3−xCo x O y (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) were synthesized by solid state reaction method. The structure, phonon vibration, conduction, and spin correlation were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, infrared spectra, resistivity, and electron spin resonance. It is found that there are orthorhombic–tetragonal and tetragonal–orthorhombic structural transitions with Co doping, and the conduction behavior changes from metallic to semiconducting. With the increase of Co content, the Cu(1)—O(1) phonon mode around 531 cm−1 softens, the Cu(2)—O(2) phonon mode around 657 cm−1 hardens, and the Cu(1)—O(4) mode around 583 cm−1 is nearly unchanged. The Cu2+ spins tend to localize with Co doping. The changes in structure, phonon vibration, and spin correlation with Co doping are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:We report a comprehensive x-ray scattering study of the low-temperature orthorhombic (LTO)-high-temperature tetragonal (HTT) structural phase transition in 1% iron-doped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) (x = 0.2). The superlattice (032) peak intensity and the width are investigated in detail for a wide temperature range. We found that the structural phase transition is not sharp and the tilt ordering of the CuO(6) octahedra persists above the transition temperature T(S) (≈77 K). Even at room temperature, the superlattice peak is still observable. The structural phase transition is identified as an order-disorder type phase transition. We found that the tilt ordering in our iron-doped material is always short-ranged, and in the HTT phase the correlation between the tilts along the b axis is better preserved than that along the a axis. Moreover, we identify the role of the Fe as the nucleation centers of the LTO domains in the structural phase transition.

Abstract:The Sr concentration dependence of the structural transition from the orthorhombic into the tetragonal low-temperature phase in rare-earth-doped (R = Nd, Eu) La_{2-x-y}Sr_xR_yCuO_4 has been studied in detail. Independently of the rare earth concentration the transition temperature is strongly reduced at x ~ 0.05. We give a qualitative argument that the effect can be attributed to the Coulomb repulsion between doped carriers. We find the enthalpy jump at the low-temperature transition to scale transition temperature between the high-temperature tetragonal and the orthorhombic phase. This effect can be understood in terms of a Landau expansion.

Abstract:Superconducting phases, superstructural modulations and their relationship in La2CuO4.12 were studied. By magnetic measurements and x-ray diffraction, two superconducting phases with T-c values of 15 and 41 K were found with the structurally independent correspondents of two orthorhumbic Fmmm phases. By electron diffraction, two types of superstructural modulations situated on the ab- and bc-plane were observed, with modulation vectors of 1/6a* +/- 1/2b* and 0.18b* +/- (0.26-0.28)c*, respectively. These superstructural modulations were identified to be actually originated from two types of charge ordering. In addition, it is indicated that the observed ab- and bc-plane charge ordering could very possibly be correlated to the 15 and 41 K phases, respectively. For the 15 K phase, its depressed superconductivity possibly originates electronically from the ab-plane charge ordering which is compatible with the concept of the 'stripe phase'.

Abstract:We performed systematic measurements of magnetic susceptibility on single crystals of La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. The dependence of the superconducting transition temperature on Sr-concentration demonstrates a step-like pattern upon doping at {\it x}$\sim$0.08 as the crystal structure changes from low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) to low-temperature orthorhombic (LTO) phase at low temperature. Upon cooling, an anomalous upturn in the susceptibility was observed at the structural phase transition between the LTT-LTO phases under the magnetic field parallel to {\it c}-axis.

Abstract:Measurements of internal friction and elastic modulus on Bi–Sr–Ca–Cu–O system reveal that a certain kind of phase transition take place a few tens degrees higher than T c . X-ray diffraction measurements show that the symmetry remains unchanged from room temperature to 77 K but the lattice parameters jump at the transition temperatures. Ferroelastic loop were measured around the temperatures mentioned above, which indicates the existence of movable boundaries and elastic softening. It is considered that the instability favor the superconducting transition followed.

Abstract:The possible role of the van Hove singularity (vHs) in stabilizing the low-temperature orthorhombic (LTO) phase transition in La$_{2-x}$\-Sr$_x$\-CuO$_ 4$ (LSCO) is discussed. It is found that the vHs can drive a structural distortion in two different ways, either due to spin-orbit coupling or to dynamic Jahn-Teller (JT) effects. This paper discusses the latter effect in some detail. It is shown that a model Hamiltonian introduced earlier to describe the coupled electron -- octahedral tilt motions (`cageons') has a series of phase transitions, from a high-temperature disordered JT phase (similar to the high-temperature tetragonal phase of LSCO) to an intermediate temperature dynamic JT phase, of average orthorhombic symmetry (the LTO phase) to a low temperature static JT phase (the low temperature tetragonal phase). For some parameter values, the static JT phase is absent.

Abstract:We present a theory for the transition between two ferromagnetic phases observed experimentally in lightly doped La1-xSrxMnO3. Starting from an electronic model, the instabilities to various types of orbital orderings are studied within the random-phase approximation. In most cases, the instabilities occur in the region of strong correlations. A phase diagram is calculated in the case of strong correlation by means of the projected perturbation technique and the Schwinger boson technique. A phase transition between two types of orbital ordering occurs at a low doping, which may be closely relevant to recent experimental observations.

Abstract:A La-doped Bi-Sr-Cu-O phase is studied by electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy. The space group of the crystal is Ccca and the lattice parameters are a=5.39 Å, b=23.5 Å, and c=34.0 Å. The structural difference between the present compound and the Bi4Sr8Cu5O z phase is discussed. The origin of high temperature superconductivity in this sample is proposed.

Abstract:Perovskite oxides are known to exhibit many magnetic, electronic and structural phases as function of doping and temperature. These materials are theoretically frequently investigated by the DFT+U method, typically in their ground state structure at $T=0$. We show that by combining machine learning force fields (MLFFs) and DFT+U based molecular dynamics, it becomes possible to investigate the crystal structure of complex oxides as function of temperature and $U$. Here, we apply this method to the magnetic transition metal compounds LaMnO$_3$ and SrRuO$_3$. We show that the structural phase transition from orthorhombic to cubic in LaMnO$_3$, which is accompanied by the suppression of a Jahn-Teller distortion, can be simulated with an appropriate choice of $U$. For SrRuO$_3$, we show that the sequence of orthorhombic to tetragonal to cubic crystal phase transitions can be described with great accuracy. We propose that the $U$ values that correctly capture the temperature-dependent structures of these complex oxides, can be identified by comparison of the MLFF simulated and experimentally determined structures.

Abstract:The modulation structure in the be plane of a phase-separated Cu-rich La2CuO4.003 oxide was studied using transmission electron microscopy. Upon an electron beam irradiation at 93 K, a phase transformation from superconducting phase to antiferromagnetic phase was observed and identified based on the analysis of the different reflection conditions for the two space groups of the two phases, i.e., D-2h(23) or Fmmm for the superconducting phase and D-2h(18) or Bmab for the antiferromagnetic phase. For the superconducting phase it is found that the modulation vector changes from 0.041[06 (8) over bar]* toward 0.027[04 (8) over bar]* during the electron-beam irradiation. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy results are also presented showing that the Cu-rich La2CuO4.003 oxide has indeed phase-separated into hole-rich superconducting phase and hole-poor antiferromagnetic insulating phase. Abstract:The detailed structural properties of La-doped Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6 (La-Bi2201, 0<=x<=1.1) have been studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The well-known incommensurate supermodulation q1 in the Bi-based cuprates evolves from a monoclinic superstructure in the pristine Bi2201 phase to an orthogonal one in La-Bi2201(x=0.73) phase. The b-component of the modulation vector (q1) for x=0.25 sample is about 0.24b* and increases slightly to 0.246b* in x=0.84 sample, while it increases significantly to 0.286b* for x=1.10 sample. We have revealed a new anti-phase stripe superstructure in all the La-doped Bi2201 samples, giving rise to a new modulation with a vector q2. This q2 modulation is directly evolved from the orthogonal modulation q1 through an addition of the anti-phase structure so that its vector q2 equals to q1b/2. We also discussed the implication of these structural studies on the electronic structure by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments in La-Bi2201.

Abstract:Crystal structures of LaBa2Cu3−xFexOy with 0.0 ≤ rmx ≤ 0.25 shows an anomalous structural phase transition depending on Fe contents. With Fe content increasing the structure varies in the form of orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phases and then regeneration of orthorhombicity from tetragonal phase, which is observed from the separation or overlap of (0 2 0) and (2 0 0) lines in the X-ray diffractograms. Variation of lattice constants a, b and c with Fe content also supports by the anomalous phase transition.
