Abstract:A new species of Orchidaceae , Phalaenopsis zhanhuoensis , from Xichou County, Yunnan, China, is described and illustrated. The novelty is close to P. taenialis , P. wilsonii , and P. stobartiana , but differs from them by having a distinct, fleshy anterior callus with a deeply lobed apex at the base of the labellum and lateral lobes of labellum reflexed and facing outward.

Abstract:In this study, we have found two new species— Stropharia subrugosoannulata and Stropharia microaeruginosa . Phylogenetic analyses, based on the internal transcribed spacer regions ( ITS ) and the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene ( nrLSU ), suggest that the two new species are distinct and monophyletic. S. subrugosoannulata is distinguished from other species of the genus Stropharia by the pileus covered with greyish-orange squamules in the centre, stipe light brown and surface covered with white triangular squamules. S. microaeruginosa differs from other species in its pileus bluish-grey when young becoming lighter towards margins, later greyish-turquoise lightens towards the edges and surface radially striate when young, lamellae adnate to subdecurrent, stipe with white squamules at the base, acanthocytes absent. The new record species from Jilin Province, Clitolyophyllum umbilicatum was also confirmed, based on morphological and molecular study. Here, we have given full descriptions of each species, colour images, illustrations and two phylogenetic trees that show the placement and relationship of the two new species and the new record are provided.

Abstract:Aster yaoshanensis sp. nov., a new species of the family Asteraceae is here described and illustrated. The species is presently known only from rock crevices of mountain valleys in Dayaoshan National Nature Reserve, Guangxi autonomous region, China. Phylogenetic analyses based on ITS sequences and complete plastome data have shown that this new species is a member of genus Aster with high support. Morphologically, it mostly resembles A. jishouensis, but it can be easily distinguished from the latter by bract indumentum (glabrous except margin ciliate vs. villous especially on veins abaxially, glabrous adaxially) and color (green vs. purple), shorter corolla (3.2-3.5 mm vs. 4.5-5.3 mm), bract stalk (obvious, ca.1.2 mm vs. sessile), and different distribution (Guangxi vs. Hunan). The detailed description, distribution map, and photos are provided. This study further elucidates the species identification, phylogeny and characteristic evolution of Aster.

Abstract:A new species of Orchidaceae, Calanthe yingjiangensis, is described from Yingjiang (Yunnan, China) based on morphology and molecular phylogenetics. This new species is like C. puberula, but it differs from the latter in its midlob of lip with an elliptic yellow spot near the base of the column and four purple veins, triangular lateral lip lobs that is much smaller than middle lobe and twisted lateral sepals. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on three plastid DNA makers (rbcL, matK and trnL-trnF) and nuclear ribosomal ITS support C. yingjiangensis as sister to C. puberula in Calanthe section Vernae.

Abstract:Four new records of Orchidaceae from Hunan are reported,Apostasia ramifera S. C. Chen et K. Y. Lang、Eria sinica(Lindl.) Lindl.、Gastrodia albidoides Y. H. Tan T. C. Hsu were collected from The Jiulongjiang National Forest Park in Rucheng County and Galeola faberi Roife was collected from Daweishan National Forest Park in Liuyang County. Apostasia is a new genus in Hunan province. The voucher specimens are preserved in CSFI. The distribution area of the four species of Orchidaceae newly discovered in Hunan are all have a larger span,it has a important value on the fl oristic studies of Orchidaceae. Orchidaceae is the essence of the forest,with a rich species diversity. But many species only have a tiny population,needing high requirementsin on the ecological environment. The Orchidaceae basically were raised in a primeval forest or on the rock suiface which were undisturbed. It is particularly important to protect the habitat of Orchidaceae. In this paper,we discussed the investigation and protection of orchidaceae in Hunan.

Abstract:Gastrodia longistyla, a new species of Orchidaceae (Gastrodieae) from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated.Gastrodia longistyla is characterized by long column with one long and needle-shaped appendage at base of the stigma.The plastome of G. longistyla is 30464 bp in size and contains 18 protein-coding genes.Gastrodia longistyla, a new species of Orchidaceae from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to G. peichatieniana, but can be easily distinguished from the latter by having a rhombic epichile, long column (6.0–7.5 mm long), and a needle-shaped appendage (1.8–3.2 mm in length) at the base of the stigma. Identification key and colour photographs are provided. A preliminary risk-of-extinction assessment, according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, is given for the new species. The plastome of Gastrodia longistyla is 30464 bp in length with GC content approximately 24.8%, and the plastome does not contain housekeeping genes, such as matK, rpl16, or photosynthesis genes. In addition, the G. longistyla plastome lacks an IR region. This indicates that the plastome is in the last stage of degradation.

Abstract:Five new species of Orchidaceae are described and illustrated from China based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses.The recently described genus Apetalanthe is reduced to synonymy of Ponerorchis.Four new species of Orchidaceae from China, Heminium lijiangense, Peristylus fasciculatus, Platanthera milinensis, and Ponerorchis gongshanensis, together with a new country record, Peristylus tenuicallus, are described and illustrated based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses. Heminium lijiangense is closely related to H. elisabethae but differs from it by having the dorsal sepal ovate-orbicular and lip mid-lobe distinctly shorter than lateral lobes. Peristylus fasciculatus is close to P. tradescantifolius but is distinguished from it by having several fascicled and straight, root-like tubers (vs. one or two oblongoid tubers), old stems usually persistent, mid-lobe of lip narrowly ligulate-lanceolate and half as long as the lateral lobes (vs. midlobe deltoid, about a third as long as the lateral lobes or less), a raised callus at the base of each lateral lobe (vs. calli absent), spur gradually attenuate toward the apex (vs. spur clavate). Platanthera milinensis is similar to P. stenochila by sharing small green flowers and lip without a spur, but differs in having a creeping rhizome, a corymbose inflorescence, and a broadly ovate and slightly 3-lobed lip. Ponerorchis gongshanensis is similar to P. faberi in its small flowers, but differs in having a linear leaf c. 3 mm wide (vs. leaf 5–13 mm wide), in the lip having collar-like raised margins on the sides of the spur entrance, and a mid-lobe which is notched at the apex but not divided into two divergent lobules that are nearly as large as the lateral lobes, as in P. faberi. All the proposed species obtained high support in phylogenetic analysis as new species. The recently described genus Apetalanthe is reduced to synonymy of Ponerorchis and a new combination is made.

Abstract:This paper describes and illustrates a new species of Primulaceae, Primula wolongensissp. nov. from Wolong National Nature Reserve in Sichuan Province, China. It is very rare and currently only known from its type locality. The new species belongs to subsection Chartacea of the section Petiolares on account of lacking bud scales at flowering, being efarinose and having distinct petiolate leaves with more or less rounded lamina. The new species can be differentiated from other members of the subsection by leaf blade margin dentate, and leaf veins which are not raised, scape shorter than or equal to pedicels, yellow flowers and location of stamens of the corolla tube at thrum flower. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on nuclear ribosome internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) demonstrated that P. wolongensis was sister to subgen. Auriculastrum. Primula wolongensis is currently known from a single location in Wolong Town, and its conservation status is assessed as Data Deficient (DD).

Abstract:Cerastium qingliangfengicum H.W. Zhang & X.F. Jin sp. nova (Caryophyllaceae) is described. The new species was found in moist places in the valleys of Mt. Qingliangfeng in western Zhejiang of China. It is morphologically similar to C. wilsonii, hut differs by having sparsely to densely pubescent stems, leaves densely pubescent on both surfaces, petal lobes obtuse at apex, and capsules more than twice as long as sepals.

Abstract:Gastrochilus pseudodresslerii (Aeridinae), a new species from Maguan County, Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. Morphological comparisons indicated that this new species is similar to G. dresslerii, but differs by its longer and broadly lanceolate to oblong leaves, larger and elliptic dorsal sepal, longer and elliptic petals, subcupular hypochile, and narrowed toward apex of column. Phylogenetic analysis based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and four plastid sequences (atpI, matK, psbA and trnL-F) indicated that G. pseudodresslerii is also closely related to G. formosanus and G. raraensis, but can be easily distinguished from these two species based on its leaves, epichile and hypochile.

Abstract:This paper published 5 new species and 2 new record species from China, all species belongs in Vandeae, Orchidaceae. One new record species determined the phylogenetic position based on molecular analysis.Five new species of Vandeae (Orchidaceae), Gastrochilus yei, G. minimus, Luisia simaoensis, Taeniophyllum xizangense, Tuberolabium subulatum, and two newly recorded species of China, Cleisostoma tricornutum, Luisia inconspicua, were described and illustrated. Luisia inconspicua is placed in Luisia where it is currently placed in Gastrochilus based on phylogenetic analyses of nrITS and plastid matK.

Abstract:A new corticioid fungus from Guizhou Province in southwest China, Asterostroma rhizomorpharum, is described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular evidence. It is characterized by producing annual, resupinate basidiomata with long rhizomorphs, a dimitic hyphal structure with simple septa on generative hyphae, asterosetae frequently present in subiculum, asterohyphidia present in hymenium, ellipsoid to subglobose, and echinulate and amyloid basidiospores (5.5–6.8 × 4.6–5.9 μm). The phylogenetic analysis based on ITS+nLSU rDNA sequences shows that the new species belongs to the section Asterostroma.

Flower Buds Confirmed in the Early Cretaceous of China

Abstract:The Yixian Formation (Lower Cretaceous) in China is famous worldwide for its fossils of early angiosperms, but there has been only one record of flower buds (Archaebuda lingyuanensis) hitherto, in which only the surface of the flower bud was documented while no internal details were known. Such a partial knowledge of flower buds hinders our understanding of the evolution of flowers, and this knowledge lacuna needs to be filled. Our new specimen was collected from an outcrop of the Yixian Formation (Barremian–Aptian, Lower Cretaceous) near Dawangzhangzi, Lingyuan, Liaoning, China. Our observations reveal a new fossil flower bud, Archaebuda cretaceae sp. nov., from the Lower Cretaceous of China. This new record of Archaebuda in the Yixian Formation not only confirms the truthful existence of the expected gynoecium (plus possible androecium) in a flower bud but also underscores the occurrence of typical flowers in the Early Cretaceous. This new information adds first-hand data to flower sexuality, pollination, and evolution.

Abstract:Aristolochia yachangensis B.G.Huang, Yan Liu & Y.S.Huang, a new species from limestone areas in Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically most similar to A. fangchi Y.C.Wu ex L.D.Chow & S.M.Hwang, A. petelotii O.C. Schmidt and A. championii Merr. & Chun in shape of leaf blade, anther, gynostemium and inflorescence on old woody stems. However, it can be easily distinguished from the latter by shape of inflorescence, length of upper and lower portions of perianth tube, colour of the limb and throat. A table and a key to distinguish the new species from other morphologically similar Aristolochia species are also provided.

Abstract:Bracteophyton variatum gen. et sp. nov. is described from the Lower Devonian (upper Pragian-lower Emsian) Xujiachong Formation, Qujing District of eastern Yunnan, China. The smooth axes are mainly isotomous. They terminate in short and compact strobili consisting of lateral fertile units arranged helically. Each fertile unit comprises one or two bracts and an elongate-ovate adaxial sporangium. The sporangium seems to possess a distal dehiscence around the convex margin. Bracteophyton variatum differs from bract or sporophyll-bearing plants such as Stachyophyton, Adoketophyton, and the Barinophytales mainly in the shape and variable number of bracts in a fertile unit. In the absence of vegetative microphylls, it is morphologically far less related to the lycopods. Resembling the sporangial arrangement in spikes of some zosterophylls, the spirally inserted fertile units forming terminal compact strobili in B. variatum demonstrate the developmental changes in the apical meristem. Until more is known, this new plant is considered as incertae sedis.

Review of Palaeobotany and Palynology

Abstract:Guangnania cuneata gen. et sp. nov. has been collected from the Lower Devonian (Pragian) Posongchong Formation of southeast Yunnan and the (Pragian-early Emsian) Xujiachong Formation of east Yunnan, China. The plant possesses dichotomous branches. The fertile region consists of lateral sporangia attached helically. Each sporangium is elongate cuneate and long-stalked. It dehisces into two unequal valves, a large abaxial valve and a small adaxial one, which in transverse section are curved towards the axis. The dehiscence line is bordered by the thickening along the entire sporangial valve margin. The elongate, curved shape and unequal valves of the long-stalked lateral sporangia make this plant a new genus. We suggest that morphological variation in the zosterophylls includes the sporangial shape, i.e. reniform, rounded/globose to vertically elongate. On this basis, the lateral sporangial position and the sporangial rim bordering the dehiscence line, Guangnania may be provisionally allied to the zosterophylls, although stelar anatomy is unknown. The common occurrence of Zosterophyllum australianum Lang et Cookson 1930, Huia Geng 1985 and this new plant during the Early Devonian (Pragian) suggests that the Posongchong flora and mid-lower assemblage of the Xujiachong flora show some similarities in composition and coeval. The disparity in these two floras is probably due to different environments in which plants lived and were preserved.
Curvicladiella paphiopedili sp. nov., a new species on orchid (Paphiopedilum sp.) from Guizhou, China

Abstract:Paphiopedilum is known as “slipper orchids”, which has a high ornamental value and can be used as household bonsai and garden plants. Paphiopedilum is also one of the most beautiful plants in the world due to their exotic and unique flowers. An asexual fungus was collected from diseased leaves of Paphiopedilum sp. from Guizhou Province, China, is described and illustrated on the basis of morphological characters and molecular evidence. The morphologies of Curvicladiella paphiopedili sp. nov. were characterized by penicillate conidiophores with a stipe, dull, tapering towards the apex and the curved stipe extension, cylindrical conidia. In the phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, cmdA, his3, ITS, tef1 and tub2 sequence data, this taxon was clustered as sister to Curvicladiella cignea within Nectriaceae.

Abstract:A new plant, Zhenglia radiata gen. et sp. nov., from the Posongchong Formation (Early Devonian, Pragian age) of the Wenshan District of southeastern Yunnan Province, China is a small herbaceous lycopsid. The aerial branches divide into foliar and fertile stems. The arrangement of the leaf bases on the stem shows lepidodendroid-like phyllotaxy. Possibly the leaf base bears a ligulate pit. The microphyll consists of a swollen, decurrent base, and an entire, linear lamina. The fertile axis is composed of sporophylls arranged helically, forming a compact area similar to cone-like structure. Each sporophyll consists of a widened lateral extension and a distal lamina. The ovoid-elongate sporangia are attached adaxially on the surface of sporophylls. Based on morphological similarities, especially the undivided microphylls, the style of phyllotaxy, the form of the cone-like structures and sporangia, the new lycopsid Zhenglia radiata is placed in the order Protolepidodendrales and a possible evolutionary relationship with the arborescent lycopsids of the Late Devonian and Carboniferous is considered.

Abstract:Stictidaceae is characterised by a wide geographic distribution and diverse ecological roles. It has recently been the focus of taxonomic research in China. In this study, we describe two new asexual Stictidaceae species that we presume to be saprobes: Glomerobolus poacearum and Ostropomyces yunnanensis . The specimens were collected from decaying stems of unidentified herbaceous and Poaceae hosts in the Yunnan Dashanbao Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve, China. Our approach combines morphological and multi-locus phylogenetic analysis, utilising LSU, ITS, mtSSU and rpb 2 markers. Glomerobolus poacearum sp. nov., was collected on decayed aquatic grass stems. In our phylogeny, it forms a well-supported clade with G . gelineus, the type of the genus. The species differs from G . gelineus in having comparatively smaller hyphoma, lobes and ballistic propagules that are spherical or fan-shaped when swollen. The discovery of Glomerobolus poacearum on Poaceae species within China are new observations of plant associates and geographical distribution in the genus. Ostropomyces yunnanensis sp. nov., was collected on a stem of a herbaceous plant. In our phylogenetic analysis, it forms a well-supported clade with G . gelineus , the type species of the genus and is characterised by the production of conidiomata with forcible discharge. Ostropomyces yunnanensis is distinguishable from the asexual morph of O . pruinosellus by possessing larger pycnidial conidiomata, which feature multiple locules of conical or irregular shapes and by having larger conidia that are 0–4-septate. These taxonomic contributions enrich our understanding of the diversity, evolutionary relationships and ecological interactions within Stictidaceae .
