Abstract:In this paper we propose a search method for finding a simple Nash Equilibrium in a 2-player game and execute it on 24 classes of games. The result shows that our algorithm performs better than the classical Lemke-Howson algorithm.

Abstract:Nash Equilibria computing is one of the most important problems in non-cooperative games. In this paper, we give a searching algorithm for finding a simple Nash equilibrium in two-player games. We limit the searching strategy space according to rank and the conditionally dominant rows of the payoff matrix, order the space, and seach the limited and ordered strategy space for finding a simple Nash equilibrium.

Abstract:This paper addresses a Nash equilibrium (NE) seeking problem for non-cooperative games with double-integrator agents who communicate with each other on an unbalanced directed graph. To deal with the unbalance in the consensus term, an auxiliary variable is introduced in the designed distributed NE seeking algorithm and is the estimation of the left eigenvector of the Laplacian matrix associated with the zero eigenvalue. Moreover, an event-triggered broadcasting scheme is proposed to reduce communication loads in the network. It is shown that the proposed communication scheme is free of the Zeno behavior and the asymptotic convergence of the designed algorithm is obtained. Simulation results are demonstrated to validate the proposed methods.

Abstract:Considerable progress has been made in recent years in complexity analysis of Nash equilibrium, so we restrict our attention to seek it from the empirical perspective in this paper. Based on a new description format of game - stimulate - response pair proposed in the paper, we put forward a constraints satisfaction-based algorithm on this data structure to compute pure Nash equilibrium of graphical game. And then, we discuss how to employ search strategies when finding the equilibrium in different types. To evaluate our algorithm, we use a comprehensive game generator - GAMUT, to produce a mass of data and take a famous tool - gambit as competitor. At last the experimental result is presented.

Abstract:Nash equilibrium is one of the most influential solution concepts in game theory. With the development of computer science and artificial intelligence, there is an increasing demand on Nash equilibrium computation, especially for Internet economics and multi-agent learning. This paper reviews various algorithms computing the Nash equilibrium and its approximation solutions in finite normal-form games from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. For the theoretical part, we classify algorithms in the literature and present basic ideas on algorithm design and analysis. For the empirical part, we present a comprehensive comparison on the algorithms in the literature over different kinds of games. Based on these results, we provide practical suggestions on implementations and uses of these algorithms. Finally, we present a series of open problems from both theoretical and practical considerations.

Abstract:We present a complete algorithm for finding an epsilon-Nash equilibrium, for arbitrarily small epsilon, in games with more than two players. The method improves the best-known upper bound with respect to the number of players n, and it is the first implemented algorithm, to our knowledge, that manages to solve all instances. The main components of our tree-search-based method are a node-selection strategy, an exclusion oracle, and a subdivision scheme. The node-selection strategy determines the next region (of the strategy profile probability vector space) to be explored — based on the region's size and an estimate of whether the region contains an equilibrium. The exclusion oracle provides a provably correct sufficient condition for there not to exist an equilibrium in the region. The subdivision scheme determines how the region is split if it cannot be excluded. Unlike the well-known incomplete methods, our method does not need to proceed locally, which avoids it getting stuck in a local minimum---in the space of players' regrets — that may be far from any actual equilibrium. The run time grows rapidly with the game size; this reflects the dimensionality of this difficult problem. That suggests a hybrid scheme where one of the relatively fast prior incomplete algorithms is run, and if it fails to find an equilibrium, then our method is used.
A Polynomial-time Nash Equilibrium Algorithm for Repeated Stochastic Games

Abstract:We present a polynomial-time algorithm that always finds an (approximate) Nash equilibrium for repeated two-player stochastic games. The algorithm exploits the folk theorem to derive a strategy profile that forms an equilibrium by buttressing mutually beneficial behavior with threats, where possible. One component of our algorithm efficiently searches for an approximation of the egalitarian point, the fairest pareto-efficient solution. The paper concludes by applying the algorithm to a set of grid games to illustrate typical solutions the algorithm finds. These solutions compare very favorably to those found by competing algorithms, resulting in strategies with higher social welfare, as well as guaranteed computational efficiency.

Fixed-Time Consensus-Based Event-Triggered Nash Equilibrium Seeking Strategy

Abstract:This brief studies Nash equilibrium (NE) seeking problems among groups of players in non-cooperative games. Instead of having global information, this group of players exchanges their information via a topology graph. By integrating the leader-follower consensus protocol with the gradient descent method, we design a new finite-time event-triggered NE seeking strategy. The NE is practical finite-time stable under the proposed algorithm, even though estimate updates occur only when the triggering condition is satisfied. Moreover, players' estimates on the actions converge to sufficiently small circles centered at the actual actions in a fixed time, which can be predefined by adjusting the design parameters. The strictly positive inter-execution time is proven to reveal the inexistence of Zeno behavior. Lastly, a simulation is provided to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the designed algorithm.

Abstract:Dear Editor, This letter examines the fixed-time stability of the Nash equilibrium (NE) in non-cooperative games. We propose a consensus-based NE seeking algorithm for situations where players do not have perfect information and communicate via a topology graph. The proposed algorithm can achieve NE in a fixed time that does not depend on initial conditions and can be adjusted in advance. In this strategy, players use their estimates of other players' actions to update their own actions. We present sufficient conditions that ensure the fixed-time stability of the NE through rigorous Lyapunov stability analysis. Finally, we provide an example to verify the feasibility of the theoretical result.

A Semi-Tensor Product Approach to Finding Nash Equilibria for Static Games

Abstract:This paper investigates how to find Nash equilibria (NE) for static games by using the semi-tensor product method, and presents a number of new results. First, the payoff function of each player for static games is expressed into an algebraic form via the semi-tensor product. Second, based on the algebraic form of the pseudo-Boolean derivative, two necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence of NE in the multi-player binary choice game with complete and incomplete information, respectively. Third, the multi-player multi-choice game is considered and two effective algorithms are established on how to find NE via the structural matrix of the payoff function. The study of illustrative examples shows that the new results/algorithms presented in this paper are very effective in finding NE for static games.

Abstract:Is there an algorithm that takes a game in normal form as input, and outputs a Nash equilibrium? If the payoffs are integers, the answer is yes, and lot of work has been done in its computational complexity. If the payoffs are permitted to be real numbers, the answer is no, for continuity reasons. It is worthwhile to investigate the precise degree of non-computability (the Weihrauch degree), since knowing the degree entails what other approaches are available (eg, is there a randomized algorithm with positive success change?). The two player case has already been fully classified, but the multiplayer case remains open and is addressed here. Our approach involves classifying the degree of finding roots of polynomials, and lifting this to systems of polynomial inequalities via cylindrical algebraic decomposition.

Abstract:A main concern in applications of game theory is how to effectively select a Nash equilibrium, especially a pure-strategy Nash equilibriumfor a finite n-person game in normal form. This selection process often requires the computation of all Nash equilibria. It is well known that determining whether a finite game has a pure-strategy Nash equilibrium is an NP-hard problem and it is difficult to solve by naive enumeration algorithms. By exploiting the properties of pure strategy and multilinear terms in the payoff functions, this paper formulates a new mixed 0-1 linear programfor computing all pure-strategy Nash equilibria. To our knowledge, it is the first method to formulate a mixed 0-1 linear programming for pure-strategy Nash equilibria and it may work well for similar problems. Numerical results show that the approach is effective and this method can be easily distributed in a distributed way.

Abstract:Although the linear programming approach to the zero-sum games of normal form has its unique advantages,it is pow- erless to solve the equilibria of zero-sum sequential games.And the commonly used method of such backward induction has its inherent shortcomings.For these reasons,first of all,the definitions of the action sequence and realization probability and related theorems are introduced.On this basis,combining linear programming ideas,the new algorithm for solving the equilibria of two-player and zero-sum sequential games is deduced.The ultimate goal of the algorithm is to transfer the equilibria of sequential games into the linear program,and it is very easy to solve the equilibria of games through using ready-made linear programming software such as LINDO/LINGO software.Therefore the proposed method to easily solve such problems has the theoretical value and practical value.Finally,an example of comparative analysis shows that the proposed method is effective and feasible.

Abstract:In this paper, the distributed Nash equilibrium (NE) searching problem is investigated, where the feasible action sets are constrained by nonlinear inequalities and linear equations. Different from most of the existing investigations on distributed NE searching problems, we consider the case where both cost functions and feasible action sets depend on actions of all players, and each player can only have access to the information of its neighbors. To address this problem, a continuous-time distributed gradient-based projected algorithm is proposed, where a leader-following consensus algorithm is employed for each player to estimate actions of others. Under mild assumptions on cost functions and graphs, it is shown that players' actions asymptotically converge to a generalized NE. Simulation examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper we consider strong Nash equilibria, in mixed strategies, for finite games. Any strong Nash equilibrium outcome is Pareto efficient for each coalition. First, we analyze the two--player setting. Our main result, in its simplest form, states that if a game has a strong Nash equilibrium with full support (that is, both players randomize among all pure strategies), then the game is strictly competitive. In order to get our result we use the indifference principle fulfilled by any Nash equilibrium, and the classical KKT conditions (in the vector setting), that are necessary conditions for Pareto efficiency. Our characterization enables us to design a strong-Nash-equilibrium-finding algorithm with complexity in Smoothed-$\mathcal{P}$. So, this problem---that Conitzer and Sandholm [Conitzer, V., Sandholm, T., 2008. New complexity results about Nash equilibria. Games Econ. Behav. 63, 621--641] proved to be computationally hard in the worst case---is generically easy. Hence, although the worst case complexity of finding a strong Nash equilibrium is harder than that of finding a Nash equilibrium, once small perturbations are applied, finding a strong Nash is easier than finding a Nash equilibrium. Next we switch to the setting with more than two players. We demonstrate that a strong Nash equilibrium can exist in which an outcome that is strictly Pareto dominated by a Nash equilibrium occurs with positive probability. Finally, we prove that games that have a strong Nash equilibrium where at least one player puts positive probability on at least two pure strategies are extremely rare: they are of zero measure.

Abstract:The outcomes of extensive-form games are the realisation of an exponential number of distinct strategies, which may or may not be Nash equilibria. The aim of this work is to determine whether an outcome of an extensive-form game can be the realisation of a Nash equilibrium, without recurring to the cumbersome notion of normal-form strategy. We focus on the minimal example of pure Nash equilibria in two-player extensive-form games with perfect information. We introduce a new representation of an extensive-form game as a graph of its outcomes and we provide a new lightweight algorithm to enumerate the realisations of Nash equilibria. It is the first of its kind not to use normal-form brute force. The algorithm can be easily modified to provide intermediate results, such as lower and upper bounds to the value of the utility of Nash equilibria. We compare this modified algorithm to the only existing method providing an upper bound to the utility of any outcome of a Nash equilibrium. The experiments show that our algorithm is faster by some orders of magnitude. We finally test the method to enumerate the Nash equilibria on a new instances library, that we introduce as benchmark for representing all structures and properties of two-player extensive-form games.

Abstract:In this article, a discrete-time Nash equilibrium (NE) seeking problem is studied for a class of graphic games. In order to reduce the signal transmission frequency between adjacent players, a dynamic event-triggered mechanism is designed. For the purpose of regulating the actions of players to the NE points, a discrete-time NE seeking strategy is designed by only using the local action information. Then, sufficient conditions are provided to ensure that the actions of all players converge to the NE point. Finally, a numerical example of a multisatellite communication coordination problem is given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed NE seeking method.

Abstract:We study the problem on how to learn the pure Nash Equilibrium of a two-player zero-sum static game with random payoffs under unknown distributions via efficient payoff queries. We introduce a multi-armed bandit model to this problem due to its ability to find the best arm efficiently among random arms and propose two algorithms for this problem—LUCB-G based on the confidence bounds and a racing algorithm based on successive action elimination. We provide an analysis on the sample complexity lower bound when the Nash Equilibrium exists.
