Abstract:Let G = (V, E) be a directed and weighted graph with vertex set V of size n and edge set E of size m, such that each edge (u, v) \in E has a real-valued weight w(u, c). An arborescence in G is a subgraph T = (V, E') such that for a vertex u \in V, the root, there is a unique path in T from u to any other vertex v \in V. The weight of T is the sum of the weights of its edges. In this paper, given G, we are interested in finding an arborescence in G with minimum weight, i.e., an optimal arborescence. Furthermore, when G is subject to changes, namely edge insertions and deletions, we are interested in efficiently maintaining a dynamic arborescence in G. This is a well known problem with applications in several domains such as network design optimization and in phylogenetic inference. In this paper we revisit algorithmic ideas proposed by several authors for this problem, we provide detailed pseudo-code as well as implementation details, and we present experimental results on large scale-free networks and on phylogenetic inference. Abstract:The minimum-cost arborescence problem is a well-studied problem in the area of graph theory, with known polynomial-time algorithms for solving it. Previous literature introduced new variations on the original problem with different objective function and/or constraints. Recently, the Precedence-Constrained Minimum-Cost Arborescence problem was proposed, in which precedence constraints are enforced on pairs of vertices. These constraints prevent the formation of directed paths that violate precedence relationships along the tree. We show that this problem is NP-hard, and we introduce a new scalable mixed integer linear programming model for it. With respect to the previous models, the newly proposed model performs substantially better. This work also introduces a new variation on the minimum-cost arborescence problem with precedence constraints. We show that this new variation is also NP-hard, and we propose several mixed integer linear programming models for formulating the problem.

Abstract:Motivated by a phylogeny reconstruction problem in evolutionary biology, we study the minimum Steiner arborescence problem on directed hypercubes (MSA-DH). Given $m$, representing the directed hypercube $\vec{Q}_m$, and a set of terminals $R$, the problem asks to find a Steiner arborescence that spans $R$ with minimum cost. As $m$ implicitly represents $\vec{Q}_m$ comprising $2^{m}$ vertices, the running time analyses of traditional Steiner tree algorithms on general graphs does not give a clear understanding of the actual complexity of this problem. We present algorithms that exploit the structure of the hypercube and run in time polynomial in $|R|$ and $m$.

Abstract:The bandwidth theorem [Mathematische Annalen, 343(1):175--205, 2009] states that any $n$-vertex graph $G$ with minimum degree $\big(\tfrac{k-1}{k}+o(1)\big)n$ contains all $n$-vertex $k$-colourable graphs $H$ with bounded maximum degree and bandwidth $o(n)$. We provide sparse analogues of this statement in random graphs as well as pseudorandom graphs. More precisely, we show that for $p\gg \big(\tfrac{\log n}{n}\big)^{1/\Delta}$ asymptotically almost surely each spanning subgraph $G$ of $G(n,p)$ with minimum degree $\big(\tfrac{k-1}{k}+o(1)\big)pn$ contains all $n$-vertex $k$-colourable graphs $H$ with maximum degree $\Delta$, bandwidth $o(n)$, and at least $C p^{-2}$ vertices not contained in any triangle. A similar result is shown for sufficiently bijumbled graphs, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the first resilience result in pseudorandom graphs for a rich class of spanning subgraphs. Finally, we provide improved results for $H$ with small degeneracy, which in particular imply a resilience result in $G(n,p)$ with respect to the containment of spanning bounded degree trees for $p\gg \big(\tfrac{\log n}{n}\big)^{1/3}$.

Abstract:We provide an optimal sufficient condition, relating minimum degree and bandwidth, for a graph to contain a spanning subdivision of the complete bipartite graph $K_{2,\ell}$. This includes the containment of Hamilton paths and cycles, and has applications in the random geometric graph model. Our proof provides a greedy algorithm for constructing such structures.

Abstract:Color-constrained subgraph problems are those where we are given an edge-colored (directed or undirected) graph and the task is to find a specific type of subgraph, like a spanning tree, an arborescence, a single-source shortest path tree, a perfect matching etc., with constraints on the number of edges of each color. Some of these problems, like color-constrained spanning tree, have elegant solutions and some of them, like color-constrained perfect matching, are longstanding open questions. In this work, we study color-constrained arborescences and shortest path trees. Computing a color-constrained shortest path tree on weighted digraphs turns out to be NP-hard in general but polynomial-time solvable when all cycles have positive weight. This polynomial-time solvability is due to the fact that the solution space is essentially the set of all color-constrained arborescences of a directed acyclic subgraph of the original graph. While finding color-constrained arborescence of digraphs is NP-hard in general, we give efficient algorithms when the input graph is acyclic. Consequently, a color-constrained shortest path tree on weighted digraphs having only positive weight cycles can be efficiently computed. Our algorithms also generalize to the problem of finding a color-constrained shortest path tree with minimum total weight. En route, we sight nice connections to colored matroids and color-constrained bases.

Abstract:Our input is a directed, rooted graph $G = (V \cup \{r\},E)$ where each vertex in $V$ has a partial order preference over its incoming edges. The preferences of a vertex extend naturally to preferences over arborescences rooted at $r$. We seek a popular arborescence in $G$, i.e., one for which there is no "more popular" arborescence. Popular arborescences have applications in liquid democracy or collective decision making; however, they need not exist in every input instance. The popular arborescence problem is to decide if a given input instance admits a popular arborescence or not. We show a polynomial-time algorithm for this problem, whose computational complexity was not known previously. Our algorithm is combinatorial, and can be regarded as a primal-dual algorithm. It searches for an arborescence along with its dual certificate, a chain of subsets of $E$, witnessing its popularity. In fact, our algorithm solves the more general popular common base problem in the intersection of two matroids, where one matroid is the partition matroid defined by any partition $E = \bigcup_{v\in V} \delta(v)$ and the other is an arbitrary matroid on $E$ of rank $|V|$, with each $v \in V$ having a partial order over elements in $\delta(v)$. We extend our algorithm to the case with forced or forbidden edges. We also study the related popular colorful forest (or more generally, the popular common independent set) problem where edges are partitioned into color classes, and the task is to find a colorful forest that is popular within the set of all colorful forests. For the case with weak rankings, we formulate the popular colorful forest polytope, and thus show that a minimum-cost popular colorful forest can be computed efficiently. By contrast, we prove that it is NP-hard to compute a minimum-cost popular arborescence, even when rankings are strict.

Abstract:Li, Shiu, Chan and Chang [On the spectral radius of graphs with connectivity at most k, J. Math. Chem., 46 (2009), 340-346] studied the spectral radius of graphs of order n with κ(G) ≤ k and showed that among those graphs, the maximum spectral radius is obtained uniquely at $K_k^n$, which is the graph obtained by joining k edges from k vertices of K n − 1 to an isolated vertex. In this paper, we study the spectral radius of graphs of order n with κ(G) ≤ k and minimum degree δ(G) ≥ k . We show that among those graphs, the maximum spectral radius is obtained uniquely at K k + (K δ − k + 1 ∪ K n − δ − 1).

Abstract:In this paper we study the following extremal graph theoretic problem: Given an undirected Eulerian graph $G$, which Eulerian orientation minimizes or maximizes the number of arborescences? We solve the minimization for the complete graph $K_n$, the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,m}$, and for the so-called double graphs, where there are even number of edges between any pair of vertices. In fact, for $K_n$ we prove the following stronger statement. If $T$ is a tournament on $n$ vertices with out-degree sequence $d_1^+,\dots ,d^+_n$, then $$\mathrm{allarb}(T)\geq \frac{1}{n}\left(\prod_{k=1}^n(d^+_k+1)+\prod_{k=1}^nd^+_k\right),$$ where $\mathrm{allarb}(T)$ is the total number of arborescences. Equality holds if and only if $T$ is a locally transitive tournament. We also give an upper bound for the number of arborescences of an Eulerian orientation for an arbitrary graph $G$. This upper bound can be achieved on $K_n$ for infinitely many $n$.

Abstract:Graph coloring has interesting applications in optimization, calculation of Hessian matrix, network design and so on. In this paper, we consider an improper edge coloring which is one important coloring-linear arboricity. For a graph G, a linear forest is a disjoint union of paths and cycles. The linear arboricity la(G) is the minimum number of disjoint linear forests such that their union is exactly the edge set of G. In this paper, we study a special case that G is a simple planar graph with two not adjacent cycles each with a chordal and length between 4 and 7. We show that in this special case, $la(G)=\lceil \frac{\Delta }{2}\rceil $ where $\Delta $ is the maximum vertex degree of G and $\Delta \ge 7$.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a problem called Minimum subTree problem with Degree Weights , or MTDW . This problem generalized covering tree problems like Spanning Tree , Steiner Tree , Minimum Branch Vertices , Minimum Leaf Spanning Tree , or Prize Collecting Steiner Tree . It consists, given an undirected graph G=(V,E) , a set of m+1 mappings C1,C2,...,Cm,D:V×N→Z , a set of m integers K1,K2,...,Km∈Z and a positive integer l , in the search of a forest (T1,T2,...,Tl) containing l node-disjoint trees of G . Along with Kj , the mapping Cj defines a constraint that should be satisfied by the trees of the forest. For each tree Ti , it associates each node v of V to the score Cj(v,dTi(v)) where dTi(v) is the degree of v in Ti (possibly 0 if the node is not in Ti ). The sum ∑v∈VCj(v,dTi(v)) should not exceed Kj . In addition, the forest should minimize ∑i=1l∑v∈VD(v,dTi(v)) . We proceed to a parameterized analysis of the MTDW problem with regard to four parameters that are the number of constraints m , the value l , the treewidth of the input graph G and Δ, the minimum degree above which all the constraints and D are constant (for every j∈〚1,m〛 , v∈V and d≥Δ , Cj(v,d)=Cj(v,Δ) , and D(v,d)=D(v,Δ) ). For this problem, we provide a first dichotomy P versus NP -hard depending whether the previous parameters are fixed to be constant or not and a second dichotomy FPT versus W[1] -hard depending whether each of these parameters is constant, considered as a parameter, or disregard. As a side effect, we obtained parameterized algorithms, previously undescribed, for problems such that Budget Steiner Tree problem with Profits , Minimum Branch Vertices , Generalized branch vertices , or k -Bottleneck Steiner Tree .

Abstract:We study the minimal spanning arborescence which is the directed analogue of the minimal spanning tree, with a particular focus on its infinite volume limit and its geometric properties. We prove that in a certain large class of transient trees, the infinite volume limit exists almost surely. We also prove that for nonamenable, unimodular graphs, the limit is almost surely one-ended assuming a certain sufficient condition that guarantees the existence of the limit.

Abstract:Let D(G@?) denote the distance matrix of a strongly connected digraph G@?. The largest eigenvalue of D(G@?) is called the distance spectral radius of a digraph G@?, denoted by @r(G@?). Recently, many studies proposed the use of @r(G@?) as a molecular structure description of alkanes. In this paper, we characterize the extremal digraphs with minimum distance spectral radius among all digraphs with given vertex connectivity and the extremal graphs with minimum distance spectral radius among all graphs with given edge connectivity. Moreover, we give the exact value of the distance spectral radius of those extremal digraphs and graphs. We also characterize the graphs with the maximum distance spectral radius among all graphs of fixed order with given vertex connectivity 1 and 2.

Abstract:In this paper, we determine the maximum sizes of strong digraphs under the constraint that their some parameters are fixed, such as vertex connectivity, edge-connectivity, the number of cut vertices. The corresponding extremal digraphs are also characterized. In addition, we establish Nordhaus–Gaddum type theorem for the diameter when $\overrightarrow{K_n}$ decomposing into many parts. We also pose a related conjecture for Wiener index of digraphs.

Abstract:Network protection has drawn a certain interest in network optimization. One of the most effective and widely used methods to protect networks from failures is to establish backup paths for working paths. For example, we find ${k}$ node-disjoint paths between a source and a sink with one working path and ${k}\,\,-$ 1 backup paths. However, the demand for full protection of a network is somewhat too restrictive and there may not exist ${k}$ node-disjoint paths in the network due to the limitation of geographical environments. On the other hand, the occurrence probability of node failures is usually much less than that of link failures in real-world models. To save network resources, we turn to establish link-disjoint paths allowing a few shared nodes. We study the problem of finding ${k}$ link-disjoint paths between a source and a sink under the constraint that the number of nodes shared by at least ${r}$ paths is at most $\delta $ , minimizing the total link weight. First, we systematically study the computational complexity of the problem with respect to three parameters ${k}$ , ${r}$ , and $\delta $ . Then, we build an integer linear programming for the general model and design a polynomial-time algorithm for the case that ${k}\,\,=\,\,{r}$ by using the techniques of augmenting paths and splitting nodes. Finally, we carry out experimentations on synthetic and real networks that show the effectiveness of our algorithms in practice.
A $\frac{4}{3}$-Approximation for the Maximum Leaf Spanning Arborescence Problem in DAGs

Abstract:The Maximum Leaf Spanning Arborescence problem (MLSA) is defined as follows: Given a directed graph $G$ and a vertex $r\in V(G)$ from which every other vertex is reachable, find a spanning arborescence rooted at $r$ maximizing the number of leaves (vertices with out-degree zero). The MLSA has applications in broadcasting, where a message needs to be transferred from a source vertex to all other vertices along the arcs of an arborescence in a given network. In doing so, it is desirable to have as many vertices as possible that only need to receive, but not pass on messages since they are inherently cheaper to build. We study polynomial-time approximation algorithms for the MLSA. For general digraphs, the state-of-the-art is a $\min\{\sqrt{\mathrm{OPT}},92\}$-approximation. In the (still APX-hard) special case where the input graph is acyclic, the best known approximation guarantee of $\frac{7}{5}$ is due to Fernandes and Lintzmayer: They prove that any $\alpha$-approximation for the \emph{hereditary $3$-set packing problem}, a special case of weighted $3$-set packing, yields a $\max\{\frac{4}{3},\alpha\}$-approximation for the MLSA in acyclic digraphs (dags), and provide a $\frac{7}{5}$-approximation for the hereditary $3$-set packing problem. In this paper, we obtain a $\frac{4}{3}$-approximation for the hereditary $3$-set packing problem, and, thus, also for the MLSA in dags. In doing so, we manage to leverage the full potential of the reduction provided by Fernandes and Lintzmayer. The algorithm that we study is a simple local search procedure considering swaps of size up to $10$. Its analysis relies on a two-stage charging argument.

Abstract:We provide a degree condition on a regular $n$-vertex graph $G$ which ensures the existence of a near optimal packing of any family $\mathcal H$ of bounded degree $n$-vertex $k$-chromatic separable graphs into $G$. In general, this degree condition is best possible. Here a graph is separable if it has a sublinear separator whose removal results in a set of components of sublinear size. Equivalently, the separability condition can be replaced by that of having small bandwidth. Thus our result can be viewed as a version of the bandwidth theorem of Böttcher, Schacht and Taraz in the setting of approximate decompositions. More precisely, let $\delta_k$ be the infimum over all $\delta\ge 1/2$ ensuring an approximate $K_k$-decomposition of any sufficiently large regular $n$-vertex graph $G$ of degree at least $\delta n$. Now suppose that $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph which is close to $r$-regular for some $r \ge (\delta_k+o(1))n$ and suppose that $H_1,\dots,H_t$ is a sequence of bounded degree $n$-vertex $k$-chromatic separable graphs with $\sum_i e(H_i) \le (1-o(1))e(G)$. We show that there is an edge-disjoint packing of $H_1,\dots,H_t$ into $G$. If the $H_i$ are bipartite, then $r\geq (1/2+o(1))n$ is sufficient. In particular, this yields an approximate version of the tree packing conjecture in the setting of regular host graphs $G$ of high degree. Similarly, our result implies approximate versions of the Oberwolfach problem, the Alspach problem and the existence of resolvable designs in the setting of regular host graphs of high degree.

Abstract:A theorem of Frieze from 1985 asserts that the total weight of the minimum spanning tree of the complete graph $K_n$ whose edges get independent weights from the distribution $UNIFORM[0,1]$ converges to Apéry's constant in probability, as $n\to\infty$. We generalize this result to sequences of graphs $G_n$ that converge to a graphon $W$. Further, we allow the weights of the edges to be drawn from different distributions (subject to moderate conditions). The limiting total weight $\kappa(W)$ of the minimum spanning tree is expressed in terms of a certain branching process defined on $W$, which was studied previously by Bollobás, Janson and Riordan in connection with the giant component in inhomogeneous random graphs.
