The Academic Degree System of Missionary Universities in Modern China

Abstract:The missionary universities first introduced the western academic degree (system) into the practice of higher learning in China. At the beginning of 20th century, the initial phase of establishing their degree (system), for lack of regulations regarding the academic degree system, missionary universities usually turned to foreign governments and universities for registration in order to obtain conferring right of academic degrees, to which they paid much attention. For the conferring right not only meant the equal right to share with foreign (universities) but also an advantageous position in the higher education area in China. At the same time, the graduates of missionary universities could thus win the recognition of foreign universities and the opportunities to study abroad. Missionary universities paid special attention to the curriculum and established their own (degree) curriculum with similar foreign universities as the standards. They would either have the board of trustees of foreign universities set up the curriculum directly or take the curriculum model of foreign universities as examples, subject to the actual conditions. Besides, they introduced relevant textbooks and teaching (methods) so as to raise the academic level of the teaching faculty for quality education. With the improvement of their management, missionary universities gradually expanded the category of degrees, improved the degree level and extended the curriculum to perfect the system. In order to obtain degrees that stood for honor and prospects, students of missionary universities would have to fulfill the enrolment requirements and reach the (related) standards during studies, complete all the courses, pass all the exams and act according to the rules and regulations without any serious violation of the discipline. Meanwhile, strict elimination system through (selection) was implemented in missionary universities. Those who failed in the exams would be eliminated at any time. Therefore, the number of those who could get the degrees would be much smaller than that of (those) (enrolled). The development of the academic degree systems in missionary university promoted the (communication) between Chinese and foreign higher education, while furthering the Chinese understanding of western degree system, and of its practice in particular. With the education sovereignty reclaiming movement being carried out in the 1920s, the degree system of missionary universities gradually incorporated with the Chinese education system, to some extent promoting the formation and development of the academic degree (system) in China.
