Abstract:The genus Maytenus is a member of the Celastraceae family, of which several species have long been used in traditional medicine. Between 1976 and 2021, nearly 270 new compounds have been isolated and elucidated from the genus Maytenus. Among these, maytansine and its homologues are extremely rare in nature. Owing to its unique skeleton and remarkable bioactivities, maytansine has attracted many synthetic endeavors in order to construct its core structure. In this paper, the current status of the past 45 years of research on Maytenus, with respect to its chemical and biological activities are discussed. The chemical research includes its structural classification into triterpenoids, sesquiterpenes and alkaloids, along with several chemical synthesis methods of maytansine or maytansine fragments. The biological activity research includes activities, such as anti-tumor, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory activities, as well as HIV inhibition, which can provide a theoretical basis for the better development and utilization of the Maytenus.

Abstract:Cannabis sativa L. is one of the oldest plants used for medicine because of its numerous natural constituents. From the 1960s to the present, a total of 565 constituents have been reported from Cannabis sativa L., which could be classified into two types: phytocannabinoids and non-cannabinoids. These active constituents are responsible for analgesic, anti-tumor, anti-nausea and vomiting, treatment and brain disease, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, etc. However, the pharmacological mechanism was gradually revealed in the past 50 years, and still need further study. In this paper, we present a general overview of chemical constituents in Cannabis sativa L., biosynthetic pathways of cannabinoids and key enzymes involved, techniques of determining cannabinoids, and the main potential (or established) therapeutic uses of some cannabis-related drugs, to provide reference for pharmacology and therapeutic potential of Cannabis sativa L..

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To review the chemical constituents from Camptotheca acuminate Decne and report bioactivities,which provides detailed information for further investigations and applications of C.acuminate,a plant resource endemic to China.METHODS Based on 39 domestic and foreign literatures,the analysis,induction and summarization of chemical constituents and bioactivities of C.acuminate.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION The major chemical components of C.acuminate are alkaloids,ellagic acid,and flavonoids.The crude extract of C.acuminate shows anti-tumor,immunosuppression and anti-virus activities.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: to establish a new, objective approach to the quality appraisal of traditional Chinese medicines and to provide references for selecting and utilizing the resources of medicinal materials Tiannanxin. METHODS: based on the determinion of the bioactive constituents in 10 species of medicinal material Tiannanxin reported by Jishen, et al, 13 constituents related to anticancer, antitussive and expectorant effects, i.e. aspartic acid, asparaginate, β-sitosterol, selenium, molybdeuum, manganese, magnesium, zinc, vanadium, chromium, nickel, cadmium and lead, were selected for appraisal indexes. The factor analysis was used for determinating the weight of these indexes. 10 species of Tiannanxin were comprehensively appraised by fuzzy mathematical method. RESULTS: A. eritbescens was the superior, A. franchetianum second, P. pedatisecta third and A. dilatum the poorest. CONCLUSION: A mathematical model established according to factor analysis and fuzzy mathematics could be sued for the comprehensive appraisal of traditional Chinese medicines. In view of the fact that P. pedatisecta has been cultivated, marketed, exported and used medically for its high quality, it should be acceptd as the original plant of traditional Chinese medicine Tiannanxing in the next edition of Pharmacopoea of the People Republic of China.

Abstract:In this paper,the studies on the chemical composition,qualitative and quantitative analysis,pharmacological effects of Heterosmilax yunnanensis,H.chinensis and H.gaudichaudiana,medicinal plants of Heterosmilax,were reviewed.The mixed-up clinical application of Heterosmilax with Smilax was analyzed and summarized.For utilizing Heterosmilax plants fully and for providing scientific basis of Heterosmilax,the chemical composition,physical effectiveness and mechanism of actions need to be further researched,and to reduce mix-up Heterosmila and Smilax must be distinguished from the origin.

Abstract:This project is concentrated on the long-term basic research of chemical composition and function of important medicinal plants in China, and was intended to reveal scientific connotation of its effect on disease control and ecoadaptability, and to provide important clues for the discovery of new resources. The components from 220 important medicinal plants with identified traditional usage and natural competitive advantage were studied thoroughly by modern spectral and chromatographic analysis with internationally recognized molecular, cellular and zoogenic functional assessment, and their material basis and action mechanism were revealed. This project focused on the transformation from the superiority of medicinal plant resources and relevant knowledge to modern new drug development with a lot of important scientific data. The plant could not escape from any threat in nature but to defend itself from the drought, hot sunshine and attack from inscects and pathogenic bacteria by some of its relevant components. This project carried out long-term research on the analysis of the specificity of active compounds to reveal the relevance between ecoadaptability and composition, and found many new compounds with biological founction or significant chemosystematics, and illuminated spectroscopy regularity and bioactivity feature of relevant compounds. These findings revealing the pharmaceutical value and chemosystematics of these plants, help to provide significant clues for the research on new resouces of important compounds, to accumulate a lot of scientific data, with contributions to the research of natural products from other resources.

Abstract:Taxus mairei (Lemée and H.Lév.) S.Y.Hu, indigenous to the southern regions of China, is an evergreen tree belonging to the genus Taxus of the Taxaceae family. Owing to its content of various bioactive compounds, it exhibits multiple pharmacological activities and has been widely applied in clinical medicine. This article comprehensively discusses the current state of cultivation, chemical constituents, applications in the pharmaceutical field, and the challenges faced by T. mairei. The paper begins by detailing the ecological distribution of T. mairei, aiming to provide an in-depth understanding of its origin and cultivation overview. In terms of chemical composition, the article thoroughly summarizes the extracts and monomeric components of T. mairei, unveiling their pharmacological activities and elucidating the mechanisms of action based on the latest scientific research, as well as their potential as lead compounds in new drug development. The article also addresses the challenges in the T. mairei research, such as the difficulties in extracting and synthesizing active components and the need for sustainable utilization strategies. In summary, T. mairei is a rare species important for biodiversity conservation and demonstrates significant research and application potential in drug development and disease treatment.

Abstract:This paper presents the result of a preliminary investigation on medicinal market during the Double Ninth Fes-tival in Yangchun, a tropical city in West Guangdong, China. Based on the approaches of ethnobotany and taxonomy, the medicinal market of the Double Ninth Festival in Yangchun was investigated during 2013-2014 comprehensively. The results showed that Yangchun was an area with rich plant diversity, there were more than 1 580 species wild vascular plants in this area, which belonged to 210 families and 754 genera, most of them had medicinal values. The medicinal plants collected and sold in the medicinal market of the Double Ninth Festival by local people were diverse. More than 134 species of medicinal plants were investigated and recorded, which belong to 60 families and 117 genera. An invento-ry of medicinal plants which sold in the medicinal market on the Double Ninth Festival in Yangchun was documented in the present paper, including local name, scientific name, part used, application and prepared methods. The number of families containing more than five species was seven, including Euphorbiaceae ( 11 species), Papilionaceae ( 10 species), Asteraceae(10 species), Rubiaceae(9 species), Verbenaceae(6 species), Zingiberaceae(5 species), Menispermaceae(5 species). Most medicinal plants belong to various different families, instead of concentrating in a few families. In addition, medicinal plants resources, culture background, character of prepared methods and regional char-acter of medicinal market were analyzed. The medicinal plants used for health-care were widely used in the daily life of the people in Yangchun, such as Amomum villosum, Rhamnus crenata, Morinda officinalis, Millettia speciose, Flemingia philippinensis, Gynostemma pentaphyllum, Rhodomyrtus tomentosa, Rosa laevigata and so on. The medicinal use of me-dicinal plants were closely related with Yangchun’ s natural environment, mostly for diseases which caused by hot and humid climate and mosquito and snake bite. Finally, suggestions for development of medicinal market were also proposed in the paper, more multi-discipline studies should be carried out on medicinal plants with potential values, which may play an important role in more extensive application range.

Abstract:Plants belonging to the genus Maytenus are members of the Celastraceae family. They have been widely used by different peoples as treatment for curing many diseases. The aim of this study was to explore the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of Maytenus elaeodendroides stem bark extracts, an endemic Cuban plant. The antioxidant activity of four extracts (EtOH, EtOAc, n-BuOH, and diethyl ether/petroleum ether 1:1) was determined using DPPH and FRAP methods. Meanwhile, anti-inflammatory effects by the edema method were induced by croton oil in the mouse ear. The investigated extracts showed radical reduction capacity and prevented ear inflammation at doses of 4 mg/ear. In addition, FIA/ESI/IT/MSn was used to determine the qualitative chemical composition of the EtOAc extract and allowed the identification of five flavan-3-ol monomers, four dimers, and other proanthocyanidin oligomers. From this extract three flavan-3-ol compounds (elaeocyanidin and 4′-O-methylgallocatechin), one of them new (2′-hydroxy-4′-methoxy-epigallocatechin), and a proanthocyanidin dimer (afzelechin-(4β→8)-4′-O-methylepigallocatechin) were isolated and identified by the chromatographic method and spectroscopic techniques, mainly ESI-MS and NMR spectroscopic methods.

Abstract:Chinese medicinal resources are the material basis for the survival and development of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)and the sustainable development of Chinese medicinal resources is also an important project for the modernization of TCM in China. With the increasing demand for Chinese medicinal resources in China, over-exploitation has destroyed Chinese medicinal resources, resulting in a shortage of many natural medicinal resources in China and making the sustainable development of TCM in trouble. The introduced new foreign medicinal resources have become effective supplement and replacement for Chinese medicinal resources to some extent. However, the development and utilization of new foreign medicinal resources in China are different. To fully understand the development of new foreign medicinal resources in China, this paper, taking 43 new foreign medicinal resources such as Acacia nilotica as objects, sorted out the introduction forms and policies of new foreign medicinal resources, overviewed its current development status in China, summarized the application experience of new foreign medicinal resources in the place of origin, as well as the research progress and problems of new foreign medicinal resources in China and abroad, and analyzed the research situation, which can enrich Chinese medicinal resources and other uses, promote the sustainable development of Chinese medicinal resources, and provide ideas for further development and research of new foreign medicinal resources.

Abstract:Centipeda minima is a traditional Chinese medicine with wide applications and diverse pharmacological effects. Scholars have conducted extensive studies on its relevant clinical applications, especially its remarkable efficacy in cancer treatment. This paper thoroughly investigates the chemical composition and identification, pharmacological effects, and toxicity, along with the safety of Centipeda minima, so as to lay the foundation for corresponding clinical applications and product development. Furthermore, as global scholars have conducted extensive research on such clinical applications and made significant progress, the future development and utilization of Centipeda minima's active ingredients to create novel drugs are of great clinical significance.

Abstract:Several novel bioactive components isolated from Chinese medicinal plants will be presented. These include novel maytansinoid tumor inhibitors, some new ent-kaurane and rosane diterpenoids from Mallotus anomalus Meer et Chun (Euphorbiaceae), as well as novel insecticide, stemona alkaloids from Stemona parviflora C. H. Wright (Stemonaceae). Both are native plants of Hainan island, China. 2D NMR techniques such as mono and hetero-COSY, NOESY, COLOC as well as 1H-NMR line broadening effect were utilized for structure elucidation. The separation techniques, structure elucidations and bioassay results will be reported.

Abstract:In this article, the research of chemical constituents and bioactivities in recent ten years has been reviewed of plants from the 12 genera in Flacourtiaceae related to the medicinal resources in China. The research in China about the plants from Flacourtiaceae was done very little, but many literatures have been reported abroad. The plants from Flacourtiaceae mostly contain the constituents such as aromatic glucosides, lignanoid glucosides, diterpenoids and cyclopentenoid cyanohydrin glucosides et al. These compounds or plant extracts mainly show antibacterial, antiviral, antitumor, hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic activities. The research of plants from Carrierea, Itoa and Bennettiodendron of Flacourtiaceae in China is still blank. The systemic research about chemical constituents and bioactivities of plants from these genera will play important roles in the discovery of novel natural products and active constituents, and provide valuable reference for the classifying of plants from these genera.

Abstract:Matrine is an alkaloid extracted from traditional Chinese herbs including Sophora flavescentis , Sophora alopecuroides , Sophora root, etc. It has the dual advantages of traditional Chinese herbs and chemotherapy drugs. It exhibits distinct benefits in preventing and improving chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and tumors. The review introduced recent research progresses on extraction, synthesis and derivatization of Matrine. The summary focused on the latest research advances of Matrine on anti-atherosclerosis, anti-hypertension, anti-ischemia reperfusion injury, anti-arrhythmia, anti-diabetic cardiovascular complications, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterium, anti-virus, which would provide new core structures and new insights for new drug development in related fields.

Abstract:Background: Houttuynia Cordata Thunb. (H. cordata; Saururaceae) is a medicine food homology plant that is grown in many Asian countries. Its main phytochemical constituents are volatile oils, flavonoids, polysaccharides and alkaloids. It has considerable clinical applications and health benefits. Purpose: This paper reviews the existing literatures and patents, summarizes the phytochemistry, pharmacological activity, safety and economic botanical applications of H. cordata, and provides a reference for systematic study of the pharmacological effects of H. cordata, improvement of quality standards and further development of its medicinal resources. Methods: A comprehensive search of literature and patents on H. cordata and its active ingredients published before June 2023 was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and China Knowledge Network. Results: H. cordata is not only edible and medicinal but also used in various aspects of daily life such as fermented beverages, nutraceuticals, feed and cosmetics. The main phytochemical constituents of H. cordata are volatile oils, flavonoids, organic acids and alkaloids. Several in vitro and in vivo studies and clinical trials have found that H. cordata extracts possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antibacterial, hepatoprotective and renal, immunomodulatory and potent antiviral effects. The mechanisms of expression of these pharmacological effects are related to the blood-brain barrier, lipophilicity, cAMP signaling and skin permeability, including blocking the MAPK signaling pathway, inhibiting the secretion of inflammatory factors such as TNF-α and IL-1β, and activating the AMPK pathway. Conclusion: This paper provides a comprehensive review of the progress of research on the traditional applications, botany, chemical composition, pharmacological effects and safety of H. cordata and discusses for the first time the economic botanical aspects, which were not explored in the previous reviews. H. cordata has a wide range of bioactive substances whose therapeutic potential has not been fully exploited, and it could provide a new non-toxic approach to many diseases. This traditional medicinal food plant should receive more attention and in-depth research in the future.

Abstract:The fruit (aril) of the endangered genus Taxus plants is an abandoned herbal resource. Traditionally, people enthusiastically focus on its bark, its renewable, tremendous arils fall into the soil with seeds after they are mature. The present research investigated the fruit of two species from the genus Taxus, Taxus chinensis var. mairei, and Taxus media, with regards to their antioxidant and antihyperglycaemic activities, safety, and bioactive constituents. Results showed that T. chinensis var. mairei and T. media both had certain biological activities with T. chinensis var. mairei better in antioxidant activity and T. media better in antihyperglycaemic activity. Correlation analysis revealed that the differences in bioactivities depended on content of their mainly chemical components. The mice acute oral toxicity test indicated that the methanol extracts of the two biotypes of Taxus were safe. And nineteen compounds were tentatively assigned from the two varieties, via tandem mass spectrometry using a LC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS instrument, which included phenols, flavonoids, and terpenes. These results indicate a possible application of Taxus fruit extracts in various fields like in food industry, however, this still needs further investigations.
