Abstract:A novel bis(m-phenylene)-26-crown-8-based cryptand has been synthesized. It has been used to prepare two 1:1 complexes with two paraquat derivatives with high association constants (6.5×105 and 4.0×105M−1) in acetone. In the solid state the cryptand forms a 2:1 threaded structure with paraquat and an interesting supramolecular poly[2]pseudorotaxane threaded structure with a dihydroxyethyl-substituted paraquat derivative, respectively. It has been further used to prepare cryptand/paraquat derivative [2]rotaxanes efficiently by the immediate solvent evaporation method using easily available 3,5-dimethylphenyl groups as the stoppers.

Abstract:2,2'-Dihydroxy-bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10 (2,2'-dihydroxy-BMP32C10, 1a) was synthesized and used to prepare the [2]catenane 4 in an unexpected yield of 68%, three times the corresponding value for the case in which BMP32C10 (1b) was used and close to the corresponding value for the case in which bis(p-phenylene)-34-crown-10 was used. This indicated that 1a and paraquat derivatives formed pseudorotaxanes rather than the previously reported "taco complexes" between BMP32C10 and paraquat derivatives. Another unique feature of 1a in relation to other previously reported BMP32C10 derivatives was that its binding to paraquat derivatives in solution could be switched off and back on by addition of K+ and then dibenzo-18-crown-6. In the solid state, a 2: 1 [3]pseudorotaxane of 1a with a paraquat derivative was formed.

Abstract:Two [2]catenanes based on two different cryptand hosts, a dibenzo-24-crown-8-based cryptand and a bis(m-phenylene)-26-crown-8-based cryptand, have been synthesized and characterized. These two cryptand hosts only have a minor difference in chemical structure. However, this minor structural difference leads to big differences in the configurations and packing modes of the resulting catenanes, In addition, from the crystal structures of the two catenanes, we found that the cyclophane guest seems to have a selectivity algorithm and chooses the larger-size rings to go through and interlock with.

Abstract:Four new bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10-based cryptands with different third bridges were prepared. Their complexes with paraquat derivatives were studied by proton NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X-ray analysis. It was found that these cryptands bind paraquat derivatives very strongly. Specifically, a diester cryptand with a pyridyl nitrogen atom located at a site occupied by either water or a PF6 anion in analogous complexes exhibited the highest association constant K-a = 5.0 x 10(6) M-1 in acetone with paraquat, 9000 times greater than the crown ether system. X-ray structures of this and analogous complexes demonstrate that improved complexation with this host is a consequence of preorganization, adequate ring size for occupation by the guest, and the proper location of the pyridyl N-atom for binding to the beta-pyridinium hydrogens of the paraquat guests. This readily accessible cryptand is one of the most powerful hosts reported for paraquats.

Abstract:The pseudorotaxane complex of the new hydroxymethyl cryptand 3 with N,N'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium bis(hexafluorophosphate), PQ(PF6)2, has an association constant of 2.0(+/-0.3) x 10(4) M(-1). In the crystal structure of 3 x PQ(PF6)2 one of the bonding elements appears to be an aromatic edge-to-face interaction of a paraquat beta-proton with the hydroquinone moiety; this is the first time this interaction has been reported between a cryptand and paraquat.

Abstract:Two bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10 derivatives containing two pyridyl or carboxyl groups were made. They were used to prepare three bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10-based discrete rhomboids by coordination-driven self-assembly with high yields. The formation of these crown ether-based rhomboids was confirmed by NMR, UV-vis, CSI-TOF-MS, and elemental analysis. The complexation of these crown ether-based assemblies with paraquat (N,N'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium) was studied. The complexation of neutral bis(crown ether) rhomboid 1 with paraquat was found to be statistical with a 1:2 stoichiometry. The average apparent association constant K-av of the complexation of rhomboid I with paraquat was found to be about 8.8(+/- 0.8) x 10(3) M-1 in acetone, about 17 times higher than the reported association constant value for the complexation of the corresponding simple bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10 with paraquat. This is possibly because the carboxylate groups provide additional noncovalent interactions between the host and guest. No obvious complexation was observed between the cationic rhomboids and paraquat when studied by NMR, UV-vis, and CSI-TOF-MS analysis. This Could be attributed to the combination of the charge repulsion between cationic pyridinium rings and cationic platinum atoms and the weak pi-pi stacking and charge transfer interactions between the phenyl rings and the pyridinium rings caused by the electron-withdrawing effect of the cationic platinum atoms.

Abstract:Taco complex templation based on the bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10/paraquat recognition motif is used to develop a general method for preparing mechanically interlocked molecules. A [2]rotaxane and a [2]catenane were synthesized in high yields by a ring-closing metathesis reaction, which was owed to the impactful template effect. Due to the high symmetry of (5,5')-difunctional bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10 derivatives, this taco complex templated synthesis has potential to be a tempting method to solve a symmetry-based problem in the fabrication of complicated mechanically interlocked structures.

Abstract:Crown ether-based cryptands have attracted much attention not only because of their 3D spatial architectures but also due to their good application prospects. In recent years, our group has prepared a series of supramolecular assemblies containing bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10-based cryptands. Firstly, by attaching a bisthiotetrathiafulvalene (STTFS) unit to the third arm of the cryptand, a redox-switchable cryptand was synthesized successfully. It was found that the dethreading-rethreading processes between this cryptand and the guests could be well-controlled in different redox states owing to the specific redox-active properties of the STTFS unit. Secondly, two types of cryptand-based host-guest complexes were also constructed successfully, in which P=O functional groups were located at the different positions of the third arms. These two new cryptands were capable of forming [2] pseudorotaxanes with the paraquat guest both in solution and in the solid state. Moreover, the generated [2] pseudorotaxanes could further self-assemble into supramolecular poly[2] pseudorotaxanes in the solid state. Interestingly, it was found that two different types of supramolecular poly[2] pseudorotaxanes were formed in almost linear and zigzag shapes in the solid state. Thirdly, a pillar[5] arene-fused cryptand with two different cavities was also synthesized successfully. The cavity of BMP32C10-based cryptand in this tricyclic host molecule could selectively interact with the paraquat guest. The complexation behaviours between host and two different guest species were selective, and more importantly, in an orthogonal fashion. And based on this orthogonal self-assembly of two host-guest interactions, a novel type of supramolecular polymer was constructed easily and conveniently. These above researches of cryptands will provide the diverse motifs for the constructions of molecular devices and supramolecular materials.

Abstract:A bis(1,2,3-phenylene) cryptand has been synthesized and used to prepare 1: 1 complexes with paraquat and diquat, with association constants of 2.2 x 10(3) M-1 and 3.7 x 10(3) M-1, respectively, in CHCl3/CH3CN (1: 1). In the solid state this cryptand forms a taco complex with paraquat, which has never been found before in cryptand/paraquat complexes. Furthermore, its binding to paraquat and diquat in solution can be switched off (and back on) by addition of acid or K+ (and then base or 18-crown-6).

Abstract:A new cryptand/paraquat [2]pseudorotaxane and its crown ether analog were synthesized and characterized by proton NMR, mass spectrometry, and single crystal X-ray analysis. The Job plots based on proton NMR data demonstrated that both the complex between cryptand 1 and paraquat derivative 2a and the complex between bis( p -phenylene)-34-crown-10 ( 3 ) and paraquat derivative 2b have 1:1 stoichiometry in solution. The apparent association constants ( K a,exp ) of 1 · 2a and 3 · 2b calculated for 1:1 complexes were 1.4 (±0.2) × 10 4 and 4.7 (±0.5) × 10 2 M −1 , respectively. X-ray analysis showed that 1 · 2a is stabilized by ten hydrogen bonds and face-to-face π-stacking interactions in the solid state, while 3 · 2b is stabilized by four hydrogen bonds and face-to-face π-stacking interactions. As well as in the X-ray structure of 1 · 2c , a water molecule acts as a hydrogen bridge between the β-pyridinium protons of 2a and the ether oxygen atoms of 1 in 1 · 2a . The successful preparation of 1 · 2a demonstrated that the tert -butyl group is not big enough to be a stopper for rotaxanes based on 1 .
Anion-Assisted Complexation of Paraquat by Cryptands Based on Bis(M-Phenylene)-[32]Crown-10

Abstract:The complexation of tightly ion-paired divalent salts such as paraquat dichloride by cryptands based on crown ethers can be improved by the introduction of ion-pair recognition as a means of also binding the counteranions. A series of diamide-based cryptands derived from bis(m-phenylene)[32]crown-10 and designed to complex the bipyridinium dication with anion assistance was synthesized. The ion-pair recognition process was fully characterized by H-1 NMR spectroscopy, UV/Vis spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray analysis. H-1 NMR spectroscopy demonstrated that these new heteroditopic cryptand hosts can complex both the positive and negative components of the paraquat dichloride salt. UV/Vis spectroscopy showed that the addition of chloride anion into equimolar solutions of cryptands 3c or 3g with paraquat bis(hexafluorophosphate) salt (2a) improves the binding of the cryptands to the paraquat guest. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray analysis confirmed the 1:1 stoichiometries and ion-pair recognition of these cryptand/paraquat complexes. It was found that the cryptand 3g, with 13 atoms and an isophthalamide moiety in the third chain, exhibited the best binding affinity for tightly ion-paired paraquat dichloride (2b), clue to the combination of its spatial compatibility and additional anion-binding site.

Abstract:A new cryptand, bis(1,3,5-phenylene)tri(1,4,7,10-tetraoxadecyl) (3a), has been synthesized in good yield from bis(5-hydroxy-1,3-phenylene)-26-crown-8 (2a) and tri(ethylene glycol) ditosylate using pseudo-high dilution conditions. 3a forms a strong 1:1 complex with paraquat (1) in acetone solution with a high apparent association constant, 1.4 x 10(4) M(-)(1). A stoichiometry of 1:1 was also observed by mass spectrometry in the gaseous state. However, in the solid state, as determined by X-ray crystallography, the two complexes of 3a and the previously reported homologous cryptand, bis(1,3,5-phenylene)tri(1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxatridecyl) (3b), with paraquat (1) have 2:1 stoichiometry. A unique feature of these trimolecular pseudorotaxane-like complexes is that the guest occupies parts of the cavities of two cryptand molecules. For the first time it was found that in cryptand-based complexes, different stoichiometries are possible for the same host-guest pair.

Abstract:Cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) represent a significant challenge for the synthesis of mechanically interlocked architectures, because they lack heteroatoms, which precludes traditional active and passive template methods. To circumvent this problem and explore the fundamental and functional properties of CPP rotaxanes and catenanes, researches have resorted to unusual non-covalent and even to labor-intensive covalent template approaches. Herein, we report a ring-in-ring non-covalent template strategy that makes use of the surprisingly strong non-covalent inclusion of crown ethers into suitably sized CPPs. By threading a secondary ammonium salt through the crown ether and closing the third ring via Cu-AAC click reaction, we obtained a hetero-[3]catenane comprising [12]CPP, 24-crown-8 and a dibenzylammonium macrocycle. X-ray crystallography shed light on the ring-in-ring pre-organization and the [3]catenane topology was confirmed by NMR and MS-MS studies. Molecular simulations provided insights into the intriguing ring-vs.-ring-vs.-ring dynamics of the [3]catenane, which are highly dependent on the protonation state of the dibenzylammonium site. This ring-in-ring assembly strategy opens new avenues for the synthesis of complex CPP architectures and their use in functional supramolecular systems.
