Abstract:Objective To investigate the percentage of metabolic syndrome(MS) and abnormal glucose metabolism in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFL) and without known diabetes and to discuss the association between NAFL and MS. Methods Data of NAFL group (n=118) and control group (n=56) were collected, including anthropometry, blood pressure, lipid profiles and standard oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT). MS diagnosis was from the definition of NCEP-ATPⅢ. Results According to the WHO diagnosis criteria for diabetes mellitus in 1999, the total percentage of impaired glucose regulation and newly diagnosed diabetes was 43.2% in NAFL group, which was much higher than that of control group(12.5%)(P<0.01).The percentage of MS in NAFL was higher than that in control group(31.4% vs 5.4%, P=0.001).In logistic regression analysis, 2h blood glucose, NAFL and family history of obesity were dependent risk factors for MS. The consistency of two different MS definitions was high before and after any component of MS was replaced by NAFL(all Kappa value >0.6, P<0.0001). Conclusions The percentages of IGR, DM and MS are higher in NAFL than in control group. NAFL may be considered as another component of MS.
