Abstract:The iron selenide superconductors AFe(x)Se(2) (A = Tl, K, Rb and Cs) discovered at the end of 2010 has attracted great interest because they display a variety of properties unprecedented for the cuprates and iron pnictides. Here, we present the motivation for our discovery on the superconductivity in (Tl,K,Rb)FexSe2 system, in which the onset superconducting transition temperature is as high as 40 K. We found that the compound with more Fe vacancies is an AFM insulator, which has been con firmed to be associated with the Fe-vacancy ordering in the crystals. Our discovery represents the first Fe-based superconductivity at the verge of an AFM insulator. A review on the recent results of Fe-vacancy super-lattice, AFM ordering, superconductivity and phase separation in (Tl,K,Rb)FexSe2 system is presented.
Magnetic, Electrical Transport, and Thermoelectric Properties of Sr4ru3o10: Evidence for A Field-Induced Electronic Phase Transition at Low Temperatures

Abstract:We report measurements on resistivity, thermopower, and magnetization as a function of temperature and magnetic field on single crystalline ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{4}{\mathrm{Ru}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{10}$ grown by the floating-zone method. The in-plane and $c$-axis resistivities, magnetization, and the thermopower were found to exhibit a step feature at low temperatures (below roughly $30\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$), accompanied by hysteresis behavior when the in-plane field was swept up and down from below $10\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{kOe}$ to above $20\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{kOe}$. In particular, the sharp increase in the thermopower with increasing in-plane magnetic field at low temperatures has not been observed previously in layered transition metal oxides. We propose that these observations can be explained by the existence of a transition between two electronic states in ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{4}{\mathrm{Ru}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{10}$ in low and high in-plane magnetic fields, respectively, and the alignment of domains is responsible for the emergence of a different electronic state as the in-plane field is ramped up.
Re-entrant phenomenon in diffuse ferroelectric, $BaSn_{0.15}Ti_{0.85}O_{3}$ : Local structural insights and FORC study

Abstract:From the phase diagram as proposed by Lei <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://et.al" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>., [J. App. Phys 101, 084105 (2007)] a $BaSn_{0.15}Ti_{0.85}O_{3}$ is chosen showing a diffuse phase transition between cubic to rhombohedral (C-R) near room temperature. Dielectric analysis confirms a phase transition near room temperature ($T_{C}$ $\approx$ 290 K) and also frequency dispersion in dielectric constant is observed towards low temperature. Polarization and first-order reversal curves (FORC) suggest that the system is in re-entrant phase at low temperatures. Put together, all these electrical characterization results points toward the relaxor behavior in the re-entrant phase. Local probe techniques such as x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy, Raman and Mossbauer spectroscopy are employed to investigate the local environment changes around this region of low temperature dielectric anomaly. A simple ferroelectric exchange model explaining the low temperature re-entrant behavior is presented from these results.

Abstract:The structural, magnetic and transport properties of EuSr2Ru1-xNbxCu2O8 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.5) samples have been investigated by means of x-ray diffraction, magnetization and resistance measurements. It is found that the EuSr2RuCu2 O8 compound exhibits a ferromagnetic order of the Ru moments below the Curie temperature of 130.19 K, and becomes superconducting at a much lower critical temperature of 10 K. The experimental observation that partial substitution of Nb for Ru in this system results in the decrease of the Curie temperature further supports the idea that the ferromagnetic order involves only Ru moments in this compound. We suggest that the decrease of the superconducting critical temperature Tc due to the partial substitution of Nb for Ru originates from the decrease of the carrier concentration in the CuO2 plane because of Nb existing always in the Nb5+ valence state while Ru is in a mixed valence state between Ru4+ and Ru5+. The coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity is also discussed.

Abstract:Superconductivity with critical transition temperature Tc near 90 K has been found in RBa2Cu3O7-δ compounds where R = Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu, and with Tc=56 K for R = La by electrical resistivity and low field magnetic susceptibility measurements. All compounds (except La) form in the orthorhombic, layered perovskite structure which is isomorphic to YBa2Cu3O7-δ. The lattice parameters of the compounds decrease in accordance with the metallic radii of the R trivalent ions. The electrical resistivity of the compounds studied (except for R = Nd) decreases with decreasing temperature and exhibit a sharp superconducting transition. Upper critical magnetic field Hc2 of the heavy R compounds (R from Dy to Yb) were measured and the highest initial slope |dHc2/dTc|Tc yet found for above 90 K superconductors was exhibited in TmBa2Cu3O7-δ with a value of 2.8 tesla/K.

Abstract:Transport, magnetic, and optical investigations on EuRbFe4As4 single crystals evidence that the ferromagnetic ordering of the Eu2+ magnetic moments at T-m = 15 K, below the superconducting transition (T-c = 36 K), affects superconductivity in a weak but intriguing way. Upon cooling below T-m, the zero resistance state is preserved and the diamagnetic response is only slightly affected by the emerging ferromagnetism; a perfect diamagnetism is recovered at low temperatures. The infrared conductivity is strongly suppressed in the far-infrared region below T-c, associated with the opening of a complete superconducting gap at 2 Delta = 10 meV. A gap smaller than the weak-coupling limit suggests strong orbital effects or, within a multiband superconductivity scenario, the existence of a larger yet unrevealed gap.

Abstract:Two resistance transitions have been observed on a Y-Ba-Cu-O film, one occurred in the region from 120 K to room temperature, and another always at 90 K. Experiments of both tiny magnetic torsion balance and a.c. susceptibility has shown that the large drop of resistance at high temperature was accompanied by ferromagnetism ordering, while the jump of resistance occurred near 90 K is a superconducting transition. The authors think that the ferromagnetism ordering occurred at high temperature is related to full ordering of the oxygen vacancies and the ratio of Cu 3+/ Cu 2+.
High-temperature Ferroic Phase Transitions and Paraelectric Cubic Phase in Multiferroic Bi0.95+δFe0.9Zr0.1O3

Abstract:The temperature-dependent phase transitions of Bi0.95+δFe0.9Zr0.1O3 have been studied using high-temperature x-ray powder diffraction together with differential scanning calorimetry measurements. The results show that Bi0.95+δFe0.9Zr0.1O3 undergoes two phase transitions at 815 °C and 905 °C before decomposition at 920 °C. It appears that Zr-doping seems to stabilize the high temperature phases in such compound. Both the sharp contraction in the unit-cell volume and enthalpy thermal hysteresis demonstrate that the ferroelectric phase transition (α←→β) at 815 °C is of first order nature. In contrast, the highest β←→γ phase transition at 905 °C appears to be a second-order-like one. The analysis of the diffraction pattern in addition to Rietveld refinement strongly suggests a cubic symmetry for γ-phase.

Abstract:We use high resolution angle-resolved photoemission to study the electronic structure of the iron based high-temperature superconductors Ba(Fe(1-x)Ru(x))(2)As(2) as a function of Ru concentration. We find that substitution of Ru for Fe is isoelectronic, i.e., it does not change the value of the chemical potential. More interestingly, there are no measured, significant changes in the shape of the Fermi surface or in the Fermi velocity over a wide range of substitution levels (0<x<0.55). Given that the suppression of the antiferromagnetic and structural phase is associated with the emergence of the superconducting state, Ru substitution must achieve this via a mechanism that does not involve changes of the Fermi surface. We speculate that this mechanism relies on magnetic dilution which leads to the reduction of the effective Stoner enhancement.
Optical and Raman spectroscopy studies on Fe-based superconductors

Abstract:A brief review of optical and Raman studies on the Fe-based superconductors is given, with special emphasis on the competing phenomenon in this system. Optical investigations on ReFeAsO (Re=rare-earth element) and AFe2As2 (A=alkaline-earth metal) families provide clear evidence for the gap formation in the broken symmetry states, including the partial gaps in the spin-density wave states of parent compounds, and the pairing gaps in the superconducting states for doped compounds. Especially, the superconducting gap has an s-wave pairing lineshape in hole-doped BaFe2As2. Optical phonons at zone center detected by Raman and infrared techniques are classified for several Fe-based compounds. Related issues, such as the electron–phonon coupling and the effect of spin-density wave and superconducting transitions on phonons, are also discussed. Meanwhile, open questions including the T-dependent mid-infrared peak at 0.6–0.7eV, electronic correlation, and the similarities/differences between high-Tc cuprates and Fe-based superconductors are also briefly discussed. Important results from other experimental probes are compared with optical data to better understand the spin-density wave properties, the superconductivity, and the multi-band character in Fe-based compounds.
Study on the Electronic Structures of REBaCuO Superconductors and Their Relation to Superconductivity

Abstract:Electronic structures of REBaCuO (RE=La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho and Er) systems were calculated by means of SCF-Xalpha -SW methods. Results show that there is an inner-orbit coupling for these oxide superconductor systems. The inner-orbit coupling was resulted from the interaction of two electronic orbits of RE 5p and O 2s, since they have similar energy state levels and relatively larger orbital electronic clouds. Compared with experimental facts, it is also found that the overlap in space between the two orbits has a similar tendency to T-c and the number of enrolling electrons has a close relation to J(c), therefore, the influence of inner-orbit coupling on superconductivity could not be overlooked.

Abstract:The intermediate YBa2Cu3O7-δsamples of single phase with transitional structure from tetragonal phase to orthorhombic phase are prepared by quenching at different temperatures and investigated systematically. From X-ray diffraction (XRD), R-T curve and ac susceptibility measurements, it can be concluded that the structure transits from tetragonal phase to orthorhombic phase as the quenching temperature decreases; the YBa2Cu3O7-δ samples with tetragonal phase are nonsuperconductive till 4.2K; the critical temperature depends on the degree of orthorhombic distortion in the intermediate samples; the possible existence of a structure phase transition near 100K for the non-superconductive tetragonal phase is discovered for the first time. The electrical conductance property at high temperature region (higher than 100K) for the samples quenched at higher temperature can be explained in terms of the affection of oxygen vacancies.
Ferroelectric enhancement of superconductivity in compressively strained SrTiO$_3$ films

Abstract:SrTiO$_3$ is an incipient ferroelectric on the verge of a polar instability, which is avoided at low temperatures by quantum fluctuations. Within this unusual quantum paraelectric phase, superconductivity persists despite extremely dilute carrier densities. Ferroelectric fluctuations have been suspected to play a role in the origin of superconductivity by contributing to electron pairing. To investigate this possibility, we used optical second harmonic generation to measure the doping and temperature dependence of the ferroelectric order parameter in compressively strained SrTiO$_3$ thin films. At low temperatures, we uncover a spontaneous out-of-plane ferroelectric polarization with an onset that correlates perfectly with normal-state electrical resistivity anomalies. These anomalies have previously been associated with an enhancement of the superconducting critical temperature in doped SrTiO$_3$ films, directly linking the ferroelectric and superconducting phases. We develop a long-range mean-field Ising model of the ferroelectric phase transition to interpret the data and extract the relevant energy scales in the system. Our results support a long-suspected connection between ferroelectricity and superconductivity in SrTiO$_3$, but call into question the role played by ferroelectric fluctuations.

Collapse of Ferromagnetism and Fermi Surface Instability near Reentrant Superconductivity of URhGe

Abstract:We present thermoelectric power and resistivity measurements in the ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe for a magnetic field applied along the hard magnetization b axis of the orthorhombic crystal. Reentrant superconductivity is observed near the spin reorientation transition at H_{R}=12.75 T, where a first order transition from the ferromagnetic to the polarized paramagnetic state occurs. Special focus is given to the longitudinal configuration, where both the electric and heat current are parallel to the applied field. The validity of the Fermi-liquid T^{2} dependence of the resistivity through H_{R} demonstrates clearly that no quantum critical point occurs at H_{R}. Thus, the ferromagnetic transition line at H_{R} becomes first order implying the existence of a tricritical point at finite temperature. The enhancement of magnetic fluctuations in the vicinity of the tricritical point stimulates the reentrance of superconductivity. The abrupt sign change observed in the thermoelectric power with the thermal gradient applied along the b axis together with the strong anomalies in the other directions is definitive macroscopic evidence that in addition a significant change of the Fermi surface appears through H_{R}.
Research Progress of Iron-Based Superconductors Kx Fe2-y Se2

Abstract:Since the discovery in 2008 of superconductivity at 26 K in fluorine-doped LaFeAsO, the research has been tuned to a new direction on high temperature superconductivity .So far, several types of iron-based superconductors with different structures have been discovered, with the highest transition temperature to date being 56 K.By the end of 2010, the iron-chalcogenide superconductor KxFe2-ySe2 with Tc ~32 K was discovered.This system shows a set of distinctive properties as compared with other iron-pnictide compounds .Both angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments and band structure calculations indicate that the hole pockets are missing at the Fermi energy .This greatly challenges the widely perceived picture that the superconducting pairing is established by exchanging antiferromagnetic ( AF) spin fluctu-ations and the electrons are scattered between the electron and hole pockets .Later, it was found that this material sepa-rates into two phases-a dominant AF insulating phase with a K2Fe4Se5 structure, and a minority superconducting phase.A recent paper of Hai-Hu Wen’ s group identifies a three-dimensional network of superconducting filaments within this mate-rial and present evidence for the existence of K2 Fe7 Se8 which may be the possible parent phase for superconductivity.This 278 phase has a Fe structure of a single Fe vacancy out of every eight Fe-sites arranged in a 8 × 10 parallelogram struc-ture.The status of research in this rapidly growing field is reviewed which includes crystal growth and quenching tech-nique, Fe-vacancy orders and the block-AF state, phase separation and the hunt for the superconducting phase , pairing symmetry and the gap structure.In the end, important issues are listed as perspective for future research.

Abstract:Materials that break multiple symmetries allow the formation of four-fermion condensates above the superconducting critical temperature (Tc). Such states can be stabilized by phase fluctuations. Recently, a fermionic quadrupling condensate that breaks the Z2 time-reversal symmetry was reported in Ba1-xKxFe2As2. A phase transition to the new state of matter should be accompanied by a specific heat anomaly at the critical temperature where Z2 time-reversal symmetry is broken ([Formula: see text]). Here, we report on detecting two anomalies in the specific heat of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 at zero magnetic field. The anomaly at the higher temperature is accompanied by the appearance of a spontaneous Nernst effect, indicating the breakdown of Z2 symmetry. The second anomaly at the lower temperature coincides with the transition to a zero-resistance state, indicating the onset of superconductivity. Our data provide the first example of the appearance of a specific heat anomaly above the superconducting phase transition associated with the broken time-reversal symmetry due to the formation of the novel fermion order.

Magnetic Transition and Meissner Shielding in Ferromagnetic High-T C Superconductor RuSr 2 Gd 1.4 Ce 0.6 Cu 2 O 10- Δ

Abstract:The magnetic superconductor RuSr2Gd1.4Ce0.6Cu2O10- δ was studied by means of detailed magnetization measurements in order to clarify its complex magnetic and superconducting properties. Our experiments agree with a model indicating that the in-plane component of the Ru moment might transform from a spin-glass ground state to a ferromagnetically coupled excited state by application of a small magnetic field below the magnetic transition temperature. The experiments also show that a full Meissner state is present at the low temperature, the low magnetic field region of the phase diagram. This is in contrast to the previous prediction that no Meissner state exists in this material for an internal magnetic field of several hundred Oersteds in the CuO2 planes exerted by the Ru sublattice and exceeding the lower critical field.

Abstract:We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the new superconductor Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 in the low energy range. We report the observation of an anomaly around 25 meV in the dispersion of superconducting Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 samples that nearly vanishes above T-c. The energy scale of the related mode (13 +/- 2 meV) and its strong dependence on orbital and temperature indicates that it is unlikely related to phonons. Moreover, the momentum locations of the kink can be connected by the antiferromagnetic wave vector. Our results point towards an unconventional electronic origin of the mode and the superconducting pairing in the Fe-based superconductors, and strongly support the antiphase s-wave pairing symmetry.
Magnetic Resonant Mode in Superconducting Rb x Fe 2 − y Se 2

Abstract:Soon after the discovery of arsenic-free iron-selenide superconductors AxFe2−ySe2 (A = K, Rb, Cs), also known as 245-compounds, their unprecedented physical properties came to light, such as the coexistence of high-Tc superconductivity with strong antiferromagnetism. The pairing mechanism and the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in this family of compounds still remain among the major open questions. In the majority of other Fe-based superconductors, it is widely accepted that the strong nesting between a holelike Fermi surface at the Brillioun zone center and an electronlike one at the Brillioun zone boundary leads to the sign-changing s-wave (s±-wave) paring symmetry. This scenario has been supported by different experimental methods, such as angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), quasi-particle interference, and inelastic neutron scattering (INS). On the other hand, recent theoretical calculations and ARPES experiments on the 245system revealed the absence of a holelike Fermi surface at the Brillouin zone center in the electronic structure, implying that the nesting between the holeand electronlike Fermi sheets is no longer present. Hence, several theoretical studies proposed alternative pairing scenarios with a d-wave or another type of s±-wave symmetry. As a hallmark of sign-changing superconducting order parameter, several authors theoretically predicted a resonant mode in the magnetic excitation spectrum below the superconducting transition, yet its precise position in momentum space has remained controversial until recently [1,2].
