Abstract:Xun Shi Ping Hua(Popular Stories with Admonitions) uses both classic and vernacular language,the contrast of the two language styles reflects the synchronic status of Chinese oral language at the beginning of the 15th century,as well as the diachronic evolution of vernacular vocabulary's replacing of classic vocabulary.This paper takes semantics as unites,selects 12 categories of verbs,doing synchronic and diachronic analysis according to their cases in the contrast of classic and vernacular,then gives complement explanation of the old and new replacement of these verbs in the language of that time.This study provides a reliable evidence for the research of the language of that period in the Ming Dynasty.
A Multi-dimensional Approach to Register Variations in Mandarin Chinese

Abstract:Multi-dimensional Analysis (MD) is a quantitative corpus-based approach which describes and interprets patterns of register variations through factor analysis of a set of linguistic fea-tures across text varieties, and reveals their systematic relationships with communicative purposes. The model has been employed to explore language variation in many languages (e.g., English, Somali, Nukulaelae Tuvaluan, Korean, and Spanish), yet insufficient research has been carried out on register variation in Mandarin Chinese on a full scale. In this research, 88 linguistic features are tagged in a balanced corpus composed of 20 Mandarin Chinese spoken and written registers. Through factor analysis, five dimensions which consist of 65 linguistic features are identified and interpreted from linguistic and functional perspectives. The first two dimensions, interactive vs. informational discourse and narrative vs. non-narrative concern, are similar to dimensions that have been claimed to constitute universal parameters of register variation in previous MD studies. The exist-ence of two potential universal dimensions suggests that the basic communicative purposes and functions underlying the different languages are markedly similar, given the existing social, cultural, and linguistic dissimilarities. Dimension 4, casual real-time speech with stance, is identified as a distinctive dimension in Mandarin Chinese. Dimension 3, explicit-ness in cohesion and reasoning, and Dimension 5, abstract information, are found to be as-sociated with foreign influence, and their register variation patterns illustrate how foreign contact affects Chinese register variation in a quantitative manner.

Abstract:This study analyses the evolving means of China's formal language policy on Putonghua and minority languages from 1986 to 2021. This paper identifies four stages based on the shifting focus between Putonghua and minority languages: status planning of the central government (1986-1990), balance via bilingual policy (1991-2000), strong Putonghua spread at all levels (2001-2011), and Putonghua promotion and minority language preservation (2012-2021). Through descriptive and corpus analysis of a self-constructed language policy database, for each stage, we explore the major means stated in policy documents by analysing keywords to explain policy changes with consideration of social conditions. The results show that China has continuously adjusted its formal language policy according to social changes, and that language planning in this emerging economy has been profoundly influenced by national strategy and government administration.

Abstract:Chongqing dialect is based on the ancient Bashu language.Since the late Ming dynasty(more than 300 years),due to the special and important geographical position,Chongqing has experienced many significant social change,and large number of immigrants had swarmed into here,influenced by these factors,Chongqing dialect gradually formed a dialect which is different from the others of southwest mandarin dialects.The article tries to briefly describe the influence to formation of modern Chongqing dialect by the social change.

Abstract:We report applications of language technology to analyzing historical documents in the Database for the Study of Modern Chinese Thoughts and Literature (DSMCTL). We studied two historical issues with the reported techniques: the conceptualization of "huaren" (Chinese people) and the attempt to institute constitutional monarchy in the late Qing dynasty. We also discuss research challenges for supporting sophisticated issues using our experience with DSMCTL, the Database of Government Officials of the Republic of China, and the Dream of the Red Chamber. Advanced techniques and tools for lexical, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic processing of language information, along with more thorough data collection, are needed to strengthen the collaboration between historians and computer scientists.

Abstract:We introduce a corpus of short texts in Mandarin, in which quantified expressions figure prominently. We illustrate the significance of the corpus by examining the hypothesis (known as Huang's "coolness" hypothesis) that speakers of East Asian Languages tend to speak more briefly but less informatively than, for example, speakers of West-European languages. The corpus results from an elicitation experiment in which participants were asked to describe abstract visual scenes. We compare the resulting corpus, called MQTUNA, with an English corpus that was collected using the same experimental paradigm. The comparison reveals that some, though not all, aspects of quantifier use support the above-mentioned hypothesis. Implications of these findings for the generation of quantified noun phrases are discussed.

Abstract:Despite having numerous Chinese language varieties and non-Chinese ethnic minority languages, China is often considered a monolingual nation (Liang, Sihua. 2015. Language Attitudes and Identities in Multilingual China: A Linguistic Ethnography. London: Springer, 154). The country's strong monolingual language policy heavily promotes a single standard language – Putonghua. Recently, scholars have begun to investigate 'regional Putonghua' varieties, contact varieties that have emerged from standard language promotion and community second language acquisition (e.g. Xiao, Jinsong. 2007. "Putonghua Zhongjieyu Yanjiu Shuping." Journal of Yunyang Normal College 27 (2): 119–122).This paper analyses data collected from Weibo, China's online microblogging site, to investigate the language ideologies surrounding these 'non-standard' regional varieties. Two cities (Ningbo and Shanghai) and their local Putonghua varieties are examined: the cities share a similar linguistic background but Shanghai is more economically advanced than its neighbouring city Ningbo, and the language varieties in Shanghai are also believed to have more prestige (Zhou, Minglang. 2001. "The Spread of Putonghua and Language Attitude Changes in Shanghai and Guangzhou, China." Journal of Asian Pacific Communication 11 (2): 231–253).Discourse analysis on Weibo posts allows us to show how regional Putonghua varieties are portrayed and perceived by laypeople and how they exist as 'non-standard' varieties in the shadow of the strong standard language ideology. These 'non-standard' varieties are associated with rich language ideologies and social meanings and their links to both negative cultural stereotypes and positive local identities often associated with vernacular varieties are also discussed.

Abstract:Borge Udell, the founder of Wikitongues, questioned ‘Would Cervantes have written the same stories had he been forced to write in a language other than Spanish? Would the music of Beyoncé be the same in a language other than English?’ What he means is that every language carries a unique culture and represents a group of people. All languages and dialects are worth appreciation and preservation. Shanghainese dialect is no exception. As a native Shanghainese citizen, I believe that it is high time that we should be aware of the importance of preserving and inheriting this dialect. To achieve this goal, research about the current situation is indispensable. Therefore, I researched the current situation of Shanghainese and implicated some possible methods to protect this dialect.

Abstract:With the maturity of globalization and development of the communication between different countries, linguistics research and studies have been attached to great significance in China. This paper focuses on the history of the development of Chinese linguistics, the recent status of the study, its connection with culture and how they promote and compensate with each other. Chinese linguistics is a necessary field of the study of the Chinese languages structure, which includes historical, cultural and social aspects. This paper also aims to provide an overview of the research status, significance, and future development of Chinese linguistics. It begins with a historical background and discusses recent advancements in the field and also points out its insufficient areas through comparative analysis and literature analysis. This paper also explores the linguistic diversity and unique characteristics of Chinese, including the origin use of Chinese characters, and the impact of Pinyin in China. Moreover, it highlights the current challenges faced in Chinese linguistics and examines the research landscape in other countries and regions in order to make comparisons Finally, the paper discusses the significance of Chinese language research in language preservation, cultural inheritance, and societal development. This paper finds out the characteristics of modern Chinese and the important role that different folk dialects play in Chinese language and culture through summarizing and comparative research, and points out how to better combine the advantages of the Chinese language in the future so that Chinese linguistics can be further developed.
Character Usage in Chinese Short Message Service (SMS): a Real-World Study in Mainland China

Abstract:Short message service SMS is an important component of modern mobile services. Given unique characteristics of Chinese language, it is imperative to conduct study to understand characteristic of language usage patterns in Chinese SMS so that important facts like why and how people in China use SMS can be discovered. In this paper, we report an analysis of Chinese SMS logs from three different provinces in China. A computational approach was applied to extract n-grams from logs of SMS. The language usage patterns reported in this paper consist of two aspects: 1 most popular n-grams that represent what types of information were transmitted via SMS; 2 distribution of n-grams in comparison with Zipf laws. We discovered that, compared with other forms of free text in Chinese, SMS contains more conversational elements, which are expressed mostly in bigrams. Trigrams, 4-and 5-grams are less frequent but are closely connected to commercial activities, which may indicate the commercial needs of SMS users.

Abstract:Abstract While the sociolinguistic variable is often deemed the carrier of social meaning, recent work reveals that the strength of social meaning can interact with linguistic environments. This study provides additional evidence that the same sets of variants can index drastically different social meanings across linguistic environments. Specifically, we present two cases of linguistic stylization in Taiwanese singer Jay Chou's performance in different genres: the ‘Chinese Flavor’ ballad and hip hop. Focusing on two socially salient variables in Mandarin—rhotacization and retroflex sibilants—we argue that while in both cases, Chou adopts variants associated with standard and mainland Mandarin, they index different social meanings. The conforming linguistic use in the ‘Chinese Flavor’ ballad indexes a sense of tradition, whereas the hypercorrected forms in the hip-hop song construct an unconventional stance. The study also addresses the connections between linguistic and non-linguistic stylizations and calls for more research on the multimodal construction of style. Abstract:Leech’s corpus-based comparison of English modal verbs from 1961 to 1992 showed the steep decline of all modal verbs together, which he ascribed to continuing changes towards a more equal and less authority-driven society. This study inspired many diachronic and synchronic studies, mostly on English modal verbs and largely assuming the correlation between the use of modal verbs and power relations. Yet, there are continuing debates on sampling design and the choices of corpora. In addition, this hypothesis has not been attested in any other language with comparable corpus size or examined with longitudinal studies. This study tracks the use of Chinese modal verbs from 1901 to 2009, covering the historical events of the New Culture Movement, the establishment of the PRC, the implementation of simplified characters and the completion and finalization of simplification of the Chinese writing system. We found that the usage of modal verbs did rise and fall during the last century, and for more complex reasons. We also demonstrated that our longitudinal end-to-end approach produces convincing analysis on English modal verbs that reconciles conflicting results in the literature adopting Leech’s point-to-point approach.

The investigation of language attitude is beneficial to the identity of group members and the maintenance of group relations. Besides, it provides guidelines for further protecting language diversity. Conducting a survey of the current situation of Chongqing elementary school students’ language attitudes toward Chongqing dialect from the theoretical perspective of Eco linguistics, this paper analyzes the influencing factors in depth from the three dimensions, namely, family background, school environment and language use, in order to reveal the ecology of Chongqing dialect and enhance Chongqing people’s awareness of dialect heritage.

Abstract:At the beginning of the 19th century,Robert Morrison of London Missionary Society predicted that Tartar-Chinese Dialect,i.e.Peking Mandarin,would finally win the position of standard Mandarin Chinese if the Qing Government continued its reign over China.As China was opening up to the world,on one hand,foreign missionaries and Western diplomats and businessmen took Nanking Mandarin and Peking Mandarin respectively as their target language,and compiled many Chinese dictionaries and textbooks to meet their own needs.In the meanwhile,they attached more and more importance to Peking Mandarin.On the other hand,with the gradual changes of the idea of ″Yi Xia Distinction″ and the establishment of the national consciousness in modern times,Peking Mandarin increasingly gained political superiority over Nanking Mandarin,and finally became the Qing Dynasty's standard national language at the turn of the 20th century.Thus,Robert Morrison's prediction came true.From the literature review on Mandarin Chinese by Western and Eastern intellectuals of the 19th century,it is not difficult to recognize the ebb and flow of Nanking Mandarin and Peking Mandarin in the development of Mandarin Chinese.

Abstract:The objective of this study is to review the conservation and transmission of the Hui dialects, utilizing the "inheritance language theory" that has surfaced internationally, whilst further appreciating the distinctiveness and significance of minority languages. The survey is executed by means of both empirical and quantitative techniques followed by assessment of the findings through SPSS statistical software, to manifest genuine situation of the Hui language inheritance.The survey results indicate that Xi'an Hui heritage language speakers possess an intermediate level of dialect proficiency or above. Furthermore, their listening and speaking skills outperformed their reading and writing abilities. Their dialects are frequently used, and they demonstrate an upper intermediate level of learning attitudes and motivation. The motivation and attitude of inherited dialect speakers are affected by various backgrounds, including gender, place of residence, and partner's ethnicity. In light of these findings, the author suggests protective measures for minority inherited languages at different levels and from various perspectives

Abstract:In this paper we introduce Mandarin language understanding methods developed for spoken language applications. We describe a set of strategies to improve the parsing performance for Mandarin. We also discuss two context resolution techniques adopted to handle Chinese ellipsis in a practical Mandarin spoken dialogue system. Experimental evaluation verifies the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed parsing enhancements, in terms of both parse coverage and speed. System evaluation with human subjects also verifies the effectiveness of our proposed approaches to speech understanding and context resolution in practical conversational systems.
Public attitudes towards dialects: Evidence from 31 Chinese provinces

Abstract:Dialect Attitude is conceptualized as an individual's cognitive and affective evaluation of a dialect and its speakers. In the contemporary China, dialect is suffering from significant stigmatization, resulting in social inequalities, which hinder sustainable development. This study aims to reveal the Chinese public attitudes towards dialects, and clarify the potential determinants related to heterogeneous attitudes at a macro level. We combine the crawler technology and sentiment analysis to conduct a provincial cross-sectional study. We collect 1,650,480 microblogs about public attitudes towards dialects from Microblog across 31 specific Chinese provinces. Spatial regression models are utilized to clarify the influence of macro-level determinants on differences in public attitudes. The present study reveals that: (1) The Chinese public generally holds positive attitudes towards dialects, with significant variation between provinces. (2) Political Resource (β = 0.076, SD = 0.036, P<0.05), Economic Development (β = 0.047, SD = 0.022, P<0.05), and Cultural Resource (β = 0.054, SD = 0.021, P<0.05) promote public positive attitudes towards dialects. (3) Political Resource and Culture Resource influence more significant in the relatively advantaged regions, and Economic Development poses a higher influence in the relatively disadvantaged regions. Basing on the combination of crawler technology and sentiment analysis, the present study develops the most comprehensive database which takes 1,650,480 dialects-related microblogs from 31 Chinese provinces, and describes the following scenario: (1) Overall, the Chinese public shares a relatively positive attitude towards dialects with significant variations among different provinces, (2) Political Resource, Economic Development and Culture Resource pose positive effects on Chinese public attitudes towards dialects and (3) Political Resource and Culture Resource influence more significant in the relatively disadvantaged regions, and Economic Development poses a higher influence in the relatively advantaged regions.

Abstract:This study aimed to present the status quo of linguistic studies on social media in the past decade. In particular, it conducted a bibliometric analysis of articles from the field of linguistics of the database of Web of Science Core Collection with the aid of the tool CiteSpace to identify the general characteristics, major strands of linguistics, main research methods, and important research themes in the area of linguistic studies on social media. The main findings are summarized as follows. First, the study reported the publication trend, main publication venues, researched social media platforms, and languages used in researched social media. Second, sociolinguistics and pragmatics were found to be major strands of linguistics used in relevant studies. Third, the study identified seven main research methods: discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, conversation analysis, multimodal analysis, narrative analysis, ethnographic analysis, and corpus analysis. Fourth, important research themes were extracted and classified based on four dimensions of the genre framework of social media studies. They were the participation nature and technology affordances of social media in the dimension of compositional level, the researched topics of education, (language) policy and politics in the dimension of thematic orientations, the researched discursive practices of (im)politeness, humor, indexicality and multilingualism in the dimension of stylistic traits, and the researched communicative functions of constructing identity, communicating (language) ideology, and expressing attitude in the pragmatic dimension. Moreover, linguistic studies on social media tended to be characterized by cross-disciplinary and mixed-method approaches.
