Abstract:This paper proposes and demonstrates two supervision schemes to monitor wavelength routing for optical cross-connects (OXCs) in WDM optical transport networks. The influence of the supervision methods on the differential loss of the OXC is studied. Experiments demonstrate that an alarm can be sent out immediately by the supervision circuit when errors occur in the optical switches. Guard time protection is introduced to the supervision circuits to prevent them from sending an alarm by mistake. These supervision schemes can be used in the optical layer management for fault detection and network restoration.

Abstract:The wavelength routing state in OXCs (optical cross connects) and the status of the WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) optical transport network can be controlled and monitored by the network management center and local managers through the modular control and management unit designed for the OXC consisting of two input and output links with 8 wavelength channels. Network self healing is also realized in a network employing backup routings and a unidirectional double ring network by the self healing mechanism controlled by the control and management unit. Experiment shows that self healing takes place within 4 ms in case of a fiber cut, which is well below the requirements of the ITU T recommendations for high capacity networks.

Abstract:In recent years, to enlarge the single-mode fibers (SMFs) transmission capacity, researchers focused on the dimension of space, which is a new degree of freedom that is being considered for optical fiber communication beyond WDM. Space-division multiplexing (SDM), including mode-division multiplexing (MDM) using multimode fibers (MMFs) or few-mode fibers (FMFs), and core multiplexing using multicore fibers (MCFs), has attracted much recent attention. In an SDM system, high-density spatial channels are tightly packed into a single fiber, thus making crosstalk among cores or modes a critical challenge due to fiber imperfections, bending, and twisting. Previous studies have mostly been confined to the routing algorithms for crosstalk reduction but few focuses on the in-service crosstalk monitoring, tracing and quality-of-transmission (QoT)-oriented lightpath re-optimization. In this paper, we proposed novel in-service crosstalk monitoring and tracing (CMT) method and algorithm using fine-grained optical time slice monitoring channels for crosstalk reduction in SDM optical networks. Benefitting from the large amount of fine-grained channels provided by optical time slices, it becomes possible for every source node to allocate a dedicated monitoring time slice carrying the traffic and path information for each connection. Crosstalk monitoring and tracing can be realized by extracting the information contained in these monitoring time slices. Simulation results shows that the proposed CMT method and algorithm can obtain acceptable performance in large-scale network scenarios. Furthermore, we also proposed a quality-of-transmission (QoT)-oriented lightpath re-optimization mechanism based on in-service crosstalk monitoring and tracing to maintain a high level of QoT. Finally, we designed a prototype experiment to validate our proposed in-service crosstalk monitoring method. Results show that this method can realize in-service crosstalk monitoring, tracing and lightpath re-optimization over a seven-core fiber based transmission system, and the crosstalk with a minimum value of -37.9 dB can be monitored and successfully traced.

Abstract:In order to transport traffics more cost-efficiently and more flexibly,the characteristicsof future traffics must be considered seriously when designing multistage optical switching nodes used for backbone transport networks.In this paper,A novel reconfigurable multistage OXC that combined the advantages of three technologies as Space Division Switching (SDS),Wavelength Division Switching (WDS),and Optical Time-Division Multiplexing (OTDM) has been previewed.The structures of the first and second stages of the OXC have been presented.It is fully modularized and very convenient to scaled to n×n large-scale OXCs.

Abstract:A novel optical switch structure is proposed to implement the function of cross-connection, optical power control and crosstalk reduction for optical cross-connect (OXC) in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical transport networks. Based on the conventional AS/AC network structure, the proposed one deploys a set of 1x2 digital optical switches (DOS) between the AS and AC modules. Thus the optical signal power can be controlled and the crosstalk can be reduced by adjusting the driving voltage of the 1x2 DOSS. Experiments with a 4x4 polymeric thermo-optical DOS demonstrate that the power control range is more than 35 dB, and the delay for 3 dB power control is within 7.5 ms in the worst case. Analytical result also shows that the crosstalk can be suppressed at least 35 dB.
Omco: Online Multiple Coflow Scheduling In Optical Circuit Switch

Abstract:Coflow is gradually prevalent as a new traffic structure in data centers, which allows applications to convey their application-level semantics into the network. Meanwhile, optical circuit switches (OCS) are increasingly deployed in data centers due to the superiority in hardware, such as high bandwidth and low energy consumption. However, few works in the literature considered both coflow scheduling with OCS. In this paper, we study the coflow scheduling problem in an OCS-based data center network, with an aim to minimize the coflow completion time (CCT). We derive an online algorithm called OMCO to solve this problem. OMCO can not only optimize the circuit utilization but also minimize the number of circuit reconfigurations. Extensive simulations with real-world data traces show that OMCO outperforms other existing solutions dramatically. Compared with a FIFO-based scheme and the shortest-coflow-first heuristic, OMCO reduces the average coflow completion time by up to 61% and 62%, respectively.

Abstract:We propose a novel large-scale OXC architecture that utilizes intra-mode optical cross-connect sub-elements and inter-mode switching bridges. We show by simulation that the proposed OXC architecture attains significant hardware scale reduction and similar blocking performance to the one-dimensional fully-connected OXC.

Abstract:Optical networks have been considered for on-chip communications due to its advantages on bandwidth density, power efficiency and propagation speed over the electrical counterpart. However, the major optical device-micro ring resonator is very sensitive to manufacturing errors and temperature fluctuations, which results in the bandwidth loss or even the failure of optical link. Thus, this paper proposes a fault-tolerant and deadlock-free routing algorithm to improve the reliability of on-chip optical network without requiring additional virtual channel. In addition, a path selection mechanism taking account of the actual bandwidth of the optical link affected by fabrication and temperature variations is implemented in the routing unit. The simulation results show that compared to the conventional fault-tolerant routing methods, our routing algorithm can improve the transmission latency and throughput of the network under static and dynamic link faults by up to 51% and 22%, respectively.

Abstract:We present an optical fiber time transfer scheme through the optical supervisory channel (OSC) in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems. A sub-band of the standard OSC band is used to transmit time signals by only adding sub-OSC filters in commercial WDM systems. The transmission of the existing communication data service is not affected. The wavelengths of bidirectional time transmission in the same sub-band can be very close, or even the same, to maximize the bidirectional propagation symmetry and improve the precision of time transfer. Combined time, optical supervisory signal, and communication data transmission is experimentally demonstrated along a single 100 km optical fiber in a WDM system in laboratory. Abstract:Recently, spatial-division-multiplexing based on weakly coupled multicore or few-mode fibers has been proposed for short-reach switching scenarios, in which spatial mode can be used as an independent switching dimension. Fully connected cross-connections (OXC) converting all spatial modes and wavelengths into one-dimensional switching ports and followed by huge switching array can provide nonblocking switching, but the hardware implementation is very complex and expensive. In this paper, we propose a layered OXC structure consisting of intramode sub-OXCs and intermode switching bridges. Then, a scattered-spectrum-scan intramode-first routing and spectrum allocation (SSS-IMF-RSA) scheme is designed, in which only a few discrete spectrum segments instead of the whole spectrum should be scanned for spectrum allocation. The switching will be performed preferentially for the wavelength dimension because of mature switching capability and less searching time. We show by simulation that the proposed layered OXC with the SSS-IMF-RSA scheme can achieve similar blocking performance to fully connected OXCs with up to 76.1% hardware scale reduction and 93% searching time reduction for network accommodation. The proposed OXC and RSA scheme greatly decrease the requirements for the port number of WSS and enable components reuse to achieve smooth evolution.
Homodyne crosstalk analysis in integrative OADM/OXC in WDM optical transport networks

Abstract:Optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) and optical cross-connect (OXC) are key network elements in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical transport networks. Homodyne crosstalk, due to the non-ideal performance of the demultiplexers/multiplexers and the switches, is introduced in OADMs and OXCs and causes system performance degradation. In this paper, we propose a low crosstalk structure for integrative OADM/OXC that implements the function of OADM and OXC simultaneously. For joined adding and dropping, we place a set of 2x2 switches between the demultiplexers and the cross-connect array instead of using larger dimensional cross-connect array. We also theoretical compared the impact of the homodyne crosstalk in the proposed structure and in the conventional integrative OADM/OXC. Simulation result shows that the power penalty caused by homodyne crosstalk can be decreased significantly in the proposed structure. Since the add/drop and cross-connect state of the integrative OADM/OXC changes from time to time for reconfiguration and restoration, and the polarization state of the signals varies constantly due to the thermal and mechanical fluctuations, we statistically analyzed the power penalty distribution. It can be obtained that the power penalty in the proposed structure distributes in a smaller range. This is very helpful to the planning and design of the optical transport networks.

Abstract:With the development of service, there are demands for flexible connection scheduling based on customer-side services, fast connection response, and efficient scheduling of line-side resources in an optical transport network (OTN). This article proposes a service-oriented multi-layer resource scheduling architecture and algorithm based on the introduction of OTN fine grain technology. Specifically, we propose a service awareness scheme that enables OTNs to better match service requirements. Based on a centralized distributed collaborative architecture, we extend a path computation element communication protocol (PCEP) to achieve more efficient connection distribution. We further design a resource scheduling strategy and an algorithm based on multi-layer collaboration to perform differentiated scheduling for services with different priorities. Through the mechanisms and algorithms proposed, it is technically feasible to achieve precise matching of customer-side services, flexible scheduling of connections and resources, and efficient service response, and promote the evolution of the OTN service supply from traditional fixed point-to-point connections to flexible service-oriented optical network (SOON) connections.
Investigation of the time-offset-based QoS support with optical burst switching in WDM networks

Abstract:IP over WDM networks has been receiving much attention as a promising approach to building the next generation Internet since it can reduce complexities and overheads associated with the ATM and SONET layers. Provision of quality of service (QoS) is one important topic in next generation Internet. An optical burst switching scheme to support basic QoS at the WDM layer, the offset-time-based QoS scheme, was proposed by Yoo, Qiao and Dixit (2000, 2001) (YQD scheme). In this paper, we propose a union bound method to estimate the loss probability for different priority services, which is an extension of the bounds given by Yoo, Qiao and Dixit. It is proved that the proposed union bound is tighter than that given by Yoo, Qiao and Dixit. Meanwhile, based on the conservation law, we also present a method to estimate the required maximum delay length of fiber delay lines (FDLs) if FDL buffers are employed in the YQD scheme in IP over wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks. Some numerical results on the effect of fiber delay lines on the system performance and the required maximum delay length of FDLs for different service classes are presented.
A Non-Centralized Routing Scheme with Phase-Caching CDR for Nanosecond-Level Optical Switching Systems

Abstract:Optical packet switching (OPS) networks are emerging as a promising solution to overcome the inherent bandwidth limitations of electrical switches in data center networks. However, the practical deployment of nanosecond OPS networks remains a significant challenge due to the lack of efficient optical switch control mechanisms and the difficulty in implementing efficient and fast clock and data recovery (CDR) circuits. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a non-centralized congestion control for the phase-caching OPS network. The OPS network comprises four scheduled tunable lasers, an arrayed waveguide grating router (AWGR), and four FPGA-based transceivers. By tuning the four wavelengths in a fixed order, each node communicates with the other four nodes equally and cyclically, ensuring contention-free transmission with equal bandwidth. To maximize the utilization of interconnection bandwidth, high-traffic pairs can exploit low-traffic nodes as intermediate nodes to forward the packets. In the 20.4Gbps transmission test, the four-node OPS network achieved a remarkable 12.8ns end-to-end configuration, with a bit-error rate of 9.8E-10.

Abstract:Due to the explosive growth of traffic demands, large-scale optical cross-connects (OXCs) are highly desired in next-generation optical networks. However, the scalability of classical OXCs is not good in terms of the size of optical switching modules and cabling complexity to meet application requirement. To address this issue, this letter proposes a two-phase approach to construct modular large-scale OXCs, using a set of small-size OXC modules. We first decompose each optical space switch (OS) in a classical OXC to a Clos network and then merge the corresponding links and decomposed optical switching modules of different Clos networks to form small-size OXC modules, which finally yields a modular OXC. We show that the proposed modular OXC has good scalability and acceptable physical-layer performance.

Abstract:A good dynamic routing scheme is very important to improve the provisioning efficiency of wavelength-routed optical networks. The existing dynamic routing algorithms are usually based on first-come-first-serve (FCFS) scheme to process the lightpath requests one by one. However, multiple lightpath requests may arrive simultaneously and burstly in data-intensive applications, and can not be treated efficiently by using the FCFS scheme. We will propose a new online dynamic routing scheme to process the lightpath requests in batch instead of one by one, which is termed batch-come-batch-serve (BCBS) scheme. A mathematic model and several adaptive routing algorithms are proposed and investigated comparatively. The simulation results suggest that the proposed scheme achieves better network blocking performances.
