Abstract:Extremely thick and hard roofs are difficult to break in the mining of a working face, and the large area of the suspended roof easily induces a strong ground pressure or dynamic impact disasters. The roof control of a coal mining face in a mine in western China was taken as a case study. The mineral composition, microstructure, and hydrophysical properties of the hard roof overlying the coal seam were analyzed. The characteristics of the weak-cementation strata that are prone to mud and collapse when encountering water were targeted to investigate the hydraulic softening roof-cutting and pressure relief technology. It was found that the clay mineral composition in the roof plate accounts for 60.6%. After 24 h of natural immersion, the rock strength decreased by approximately 10.3%–49%, and further immersion caused disintegration. By arranging high and low double-row water injection softening drilling holes in the cutting hole and roadway of the working face, the strength of roof rock strata in the target area was reduced, and the initial weighting step distance and weighting strength of the working face were reduced. The hydraulic softening roof-cutting pressure relief technology effectively regulated the weighting step distance of the hard roof and the peak weighting of the working face.

Abstract:Aiming at the harm and control methods of thick and hard roof in coal mine, the paper firstly analyzes the advanced control methods of thick and hard roof, such as directional shaped charge blasting roof control technology, hydraulic fracturing roof control technology, abrasive water jet directional cutting roof technology, large-scale special roof cutting machine, etc Control hole fracturing, transverse slotting fracturing and longitudinal slotting fracturing are compared and analyzed; finally, the shortcomings of current research are analyzed. According to the current research results, the analysis shows that: the method of controlling roof by blasting in the future will be limited, while the method of hydraulic fracturing, especially directional hydraulic fracturing, has obvious advantages; the longitudinal slotting fracturing has the best control over fractures in the directional hydraulic fracturing technology; the guiding mechanism and fracture extension mechanism of longitudinal slotting hydraulic fracturing in thick and hard roof need to be further studied; lack of field application research and corresponding equipment development, lack of field effect evaluation method after longitudinal slotting fracturing.

Abstract:Previously conducted studies have established that the sudden collapse of large areas of overhanging roofs in longwall working faces can cause shock loads and wind blast. In order to solve the problem of the hard and stable roof (HSR) being difficult to collapse in the initial mining stage, a combination of theoretical analysis and numerical simulation is used, taking Dongqu coal mine as the engineering background. The mechanical model of the initial fracture of the main roof is established, the relationship between the thickness-to-span ratio of main roof, the internal stress of the roof is analyzed, and the relationship between the thickness of the roof and the initial weighting step is revealed. The method of hydraulic fracturing (HF) is proposed to pre-crack the main roof in order to achieve controllability of the roof. The effect of HF on the control of the HSR is analyzed. The main conclusions are as follows: under the condition of a certain span of the rock beam, a smaller thickness of the rock beam makes for a larger tensile stress inside of it, increasing the likelihood that the rock beam will fracture. It is possible to reduce the initial weighting interval of the main roof by decreasing the thickness of the HSR and increasing the thickness of the load layer. The abutment pressure in the initial mining stage is obviously reduced after HF. The technical scheme of HF was proposed and applied in the field, and the field observations show that after HF, the HSR can collapse in time at the initial mining stage, leading to remarkable results being achieved.

Field application of directional hydraulic fracturing technology for controlling thick hard roof: a case study

Abstract:Roof management in coal mines is a critical technology challenge to realize safe production. Dynamic disasters can be induced by a sudden collapse of the roof when encountering a thick hard roof above a coal seam. To solve this problem, directional hydraulic fracturing technology was utilized in the coal mine WP with a thick hard limestone roof. To effectively cut artificial transverse grooves in a fracturing hole in rock with a high strength, the KZ54-type transverse grooving bit was developed. Furthermore, the developed small-aperture high-pressure span-type expansion sealer can effectively seal the holes and ensure hydraulic crack expansion. The field observations show that the radii of extension of the hydraulic fractures were 15–20 m and that the rupture pressure at various depths in the holes ranged from 9 to 32 MPa from the orifice to the bottom of the hole. The deeper the fracturing location in the hole, the higher the fracturing pressure was. The principal stresses in front of the working face and the resistance forces of the hydraulic supports at the working face were monitored when the working face advanced. The first weighting of the roof decreased from 38.3 to 26 m, and the periodic weighting decreased from 26 to 13.7 m. Hydraulic fracturing reduced the resistance force of the supports at the working face.

Abstract:Thick and hard roofs are frequently encountered geological conditions during coal mining operations. In such conditions, the deformation of the surrounding rock in roadways due to dynamic pressure disturbances has become a prominent factor that hinders the safe and efficient production of coal mines. To safeguard these roadways from damage, an analysis of the deformation mechanism of the roadway floor was conducted using theoretical analysis and numerical simulation methods. The conclusion drawn from the analysis is that as the roof thickness and hardness increase, the overhanging length of the goaf roof also increases. Additionally, the stress concentration coefficient on both sides of the roadway becomes greater, resulting in deeper and wider damage to the roadway floor. On this basis, a novel pressure relief and energy absorption method (PREAM) composed of combined blasting and constant resistance energy absorption support is proposed, and its effectiveness is verified by numerical simulation and field test. The research results demonstrate that the PREAM, through the coordinated control of pressure relief and support, can effectively reduce the stress on the surrounding rock of the roadway by accelerating the collapse of the roof and reducing the hanging length of the goaf roof, all while ensuring the stability of the roof. This optimization of the stress environment in the roadway significantly reduces the deformation of the roadway floor, achieving the goal of safeguarding the roadway and facilitating safe and efficient production. In addition, the research results provide a scientific basis for the control of roadway deformation under similar conditions.

Abstract:In the mining process of deep coal mines with a thick and hard roof, it is easy to form a large overhanging roof and accumulate a lot of strain energy. The sudden breaking of the suspended roof may induce seisms, which seriously threaten the safety of underground miners and equipment. To reveal the mechanism of weakening the thick and hard roof by blasting in deep mining, the four times deep-hole blasting in 63 upper 06 panel of Dongtan coal mine are considered. First, the temporal and spatial distribution of seismicity events monitored before and after blasting is investigated. Second, the process of deep-hole blasting is simulated using finite element and discrete element methods. After blasting, the small-energy mining-induced seismicities within 20 m of the roof suddenly increase and gradually transfer to the mined-out area and the front of the working face. Meanwhile, the high rock stratum is broken and a large amount of strain energy is released, which causes the range of fall zone enlarge a lot, and the stress in the roof is decreased obviously. With the increase in the number of deep-hole blasting, the pressure relief effect becomes more obvious, and the newly developed fracture is mainly located in the low strata. Microseismic monitoring results agree with the calculated results. Moreover, the rock caving steps are easily formed after deep-hole blasting, and the collapse is more sufficient. Furthermore, blasting cracks are most restrained in the vertical direction of the maximum principal stress. Moreover, the delayed blasting method is more conducive to the expansion and penetration of blasting cracks. Results show that the deep-hole blasting technology has a significant effect on weakening the roof of coal seam and preventing and controlling large-energy mining-induced seismicities.

Abstract:The higher strength of a hard roof leads to higher coal pressure during coal mining, especially under extra-thick coal seam conditions. This study addresses the hard roof control problem for extra-thick coal seams using the air return roadway 4106 (AR 4106) of the Wenjiapo Coal Mine as a case study. A new surrounding rock control strategy is proposed, which mainly includes 44 m deep-hole pre-splitting blasting for stress releasing and flexible 4-m-long bolt for roof supporting. Based on the new support scheme, field tests were performed. The results show that roadway support failure in traditional scenarios is caused by insufficient bolt length and extensive rotary subsidence of the long cantilever beam of the hard roof. In the new proposed scheme, flexible 4-m-long bolts are shown to effectively restrain the initial expansion deformation of the top coal. The deflection of the rock beam anchored by the roof foundation are improved. Deep-hole pre-splitting blasting effectively reduces the cantilever distance of the “block B” of the voussoir beam structure. The stress environment of the roadway surrounding rock is optimized and anchorage structure damage is inhibited. The results provide insights regarding the safe control of roadway roofs under extra-thick coal seam conditions.

Abstract:The movement and destruction of the hard roof in a stope is an important reason for the occurrence of strong ground pressure disasters at the working face. Considering Tongxin Coal Mine as the engineering background, the stress distribution law of the surrounding rock and the overburden rock damage characteristics of a large-mining-height working face under the hard roof were investigated. To solve the problem whereby the stope’s hard roof is difficult to collapse, the hard rock key stratum of the roof was hydraulically fractured to weaken the mechanical properties of the roof rock stratum. Additionally, microseismic monitoring technology was used to monitor the cracking effect of the rock stratum. The theoretical calculation and numerical simulation results reveal that, after hydraulic fracturing, a crack with a more consistent trend formed inside the hard rock stratum and a large area of the rock stratum was damaged. According to the monitoring results of the stope stress after hydraulic fracturing, the law governing the occurrence of the leading bearing pressure was in effect. In contrast, the influence range and peak strength of the leading bearing pressure were considerably reduced at the working face after hydraulic fracturing. After performing hydraulic fracturing on the roof of the working face, the bearing pressure of the working face can satisfy the production requirements better. Finally, the results obtained through this study can be used as a reference for determining the width of coal pillars under similar mining conditions.

Abstract:Under the condition that the working face was directly covered with hard roof, the abrupt breaking of hard roof release significant amount of energy, thus prone to triggering dynamic disasters such as roadway instability or rockburst. This paper based on the engineering background of the Xieqiao Coal Mine's 11,618 working face, a numerical simulation method was put forward to study the dynamic response of roadway under the disturbance of hard roof breaking and proposed an evaluation index IC for roadway stability. Research indicates that the elastic energy released during the periodic weighting of the hard roof is higher than that released during the first weighting. Under the dynamic disturbance caused by hard roof breaking, the peak stresses of the roadway was slight decreased, accompanied by a significant increase in the range of stress concentration and plastic zone expansion. Roadway deformation patterns are significantly influenced by hard roof breaking, with noticeable increases in deformation on the roof and right side. During the period of hard roof breaking, the possibility of instability of the roadway increase significantly due to the disturbance caused by the dynamic load. The research results reveal the instability mechanism of roadway under the condition of hard roof, and provide a more reliable basis for evaluating the stability of roadway.

Abstract:The roof control of a fully mechanized mining face has a significant impact on coal extraction. Therefore, information about strata behavior and differentiated control measures for abnormal roofs are needed. In the present research, we used the ground pressure theory to calculate the interval of the first and periodic weighting of working faces 11113, 11213, and 11313 in the Panbei mine. The maximum support working resistance required by the three working faces was calculated considering the influence of the hard roof, fault zone, and skip mining mode on the relationship between support–surrounding rock. In addition, we determined the hydraulic support for the three working faces taking into account the impact of roof lithology on ground pressure, as well as the layout and mining sequence of the working face. In order to ensure the safety of the working face mining, we implemented the laying mesh method, controlling the roof, providing side protection in the fault-affected area, and using the violent ground pressure control method for advanced deep hole pre-split blasting under hard roof conditions. The engineering practice showed that the effective control of roof ground pressure in abnormal areas was achieved using these control measures.

Abstract:Aiming at the mining disaster of a thick hard roof, based on the analysis of the mining instability influence of the thick hard roof, this study constructs the mining bearing mechanical model of the thick hard roof by using mechanical theory and obtains the mechanical distribution equation of mining bearing and energy accumulation, the mining instability energy release equation, and the dynamic load response equation of a hydraulic support in the working face, as well as the dynamic load response characteristics of the hydraulic support in the working face, putting forward the technical countermeasures for the strong dynamic pressure control of the thick hard roof in the working face. This research shows that 1) the larger the overburden load and suspension span of the thick hard roof, the more serious the mining bearing state and energy accumulation evolution; the greater the rock thickness and elastic modulus of the thick hard roof, the greater the flexural stiffness of the roof, resulting in the increase of the roof mining limit breaking span, which indirectly aggravates the mining bearing state and self-energy accumulation evolution; 2) the dynamic support resistance of the hydraulic support is composed of the dynamic support resistance caused by the release of elastic energy accumulated by mining of the thick hard roof, the work done by the overlying load, and the static support resistance caused by the direct roof gravity; 3) the dynamic support resistance caused by the work of the overlying load accounts for the highest proportion, followed by the dynamic support resistance caused by the release of mining elastic energy by the thick hard roof; the cause of mining instability and the strong dynamic pressure of the thick hard roof lie in the large span of the mining suspended roof, and the large-scale mining suspension structure of the thick hard roof leads to a high overlying load and large accumulated energy; and 4) the mining instability of the thick hard roof leads to a strong dynamic load response of the hydraulic support; adopting pre-splitting and roof cutting technology to reduce the breaking span of the thick hard roof and reducing the impact dynamic load caused by mining instability of the thick hard roof can effectively eliminate the potential safety hazard of overlimit bearing of the hydraulic support.

Abstract:In order to explore a new method and mode of gently inclined hard roof treatment, the hydraulic fracturing axial roof cutting technology based on abrasive jet is introduced, and the key technical parameters of abrasive jet axial cutting and fracturing are determined based on indoor experiments and field industrial experiments. Taking the mining of working face under the condition of hard roof in Kuangou Coal Mine as the background, the implementation process and the effect of mining process are tested by means of water pressure gauge, drilling peep and observation well water level observation, mi-croseismic monitoring, support fracture monitoring and coal stress monitoring. The research results show that the key technical parameters of slotting and fracturing are mastered in the axial cutting test of abrasive jet. Wherein the kerf depth is 200 m, the kerf length is 300 m, the kerf pressure is 40–50 mpa, the fracturing pressure is 50–55 mpa, and the fracturing time is 20–30 min. After grooving fracturing, the cracks in the roof strata are effectively generated and expanded, which destroys the integrity of the roof, and the fracturing radius is 10–20 m. During the mining period, compared with the tradi-tional blasting technology, the concentrated area of microseismic events was shifted from 80 m in front of the working face to 130 m after the combined treatment of abrasive jet axial roof cutting and blasting, and the microseismic energy release was mainly small energy events. After the application of abrasive jet axial roof cutting and scour prevention technology in hard roof, the periodic weighting step is obviously reduced, the influence range of mining stress and stress concentration coefficient are obviously reduced, the activity intensity and dynamic load effect of surrounding rock are obviously weakened. The research results provide a basis for effective prevention and control of rockburst disasters under the condition of hard roof.

Abstract:Due to the presence of the hard suspended roof, it cannot collapse naturally after the coal seam is mined. If the roof strata are suddenly destroyed without human intervention, it will cause serious geologic disasters. In this paper, we discuss the mechanisms and applications of hydraulic fracturing in alleviating the potential for catastrophic disasters. After preliminary analysis of fracturing crack propagation law, we investigate the failure and stress characteristics of overburden with and without fracturing, taking a coal mine in Dongsheng mining area as an example. The results show that the hard roof suffers severe damage after fracturing, and the initial rupture distance of the hard roof is reduced to about 40.0 m. Besides, the development height of the water-conducting fissure zone is approximately 138.18 m. The fracturing effect can be preliminarily speculated according to fluid pressure change curves. It is inferred that hydraulic fracturing point 3 has the best fracturing effect on hard-suspended roofs. On the other hand, we find the most overburden at the monitoring sites essentially bear compressive stress in fracturing and non-fracturing conditions, and a common trait of overburden stress is easily observed, namely, that overburden stress after fracturing shows a relatively smaller value than that of non-fracturing condition, and the overburden stress reduction is more significant at the goaf center and near the stopping site. The study provides theoretical support for the safety management of thick hard roofs, especially in the coal mines seriously affected by roof accidents.

Abstract:Rockburst caused by the fracture of thick hard roof and the instantaneous instability of residual coal pillar seriously jeopardize the deep coal mining safety. This study takes Boertai Coal Mine, Shendong, China, as the engineering background, in which dynamic instability mechanisms of the gob-side roadway surrounding rock are analyzed by integrating field research, theoretical analysis, and numerical simulation. The results show that the overlying residual coal pillar, side abutment pressures, and front abutment pressures together induce high static stresses in the surrounding rock of the gob side roadway, with peak values exceeding the in situ stress by one order of magnitude. High stresses accumulated in the goaf-side roadway surrounding rock can easily induce dynamic disaster. With the working face advanced, overburdens are caved in succession, resulting in a continuously decreasing of the overlying residual coal pillar width, once the working face entered the influence area of the residual coal pillar. As the morphology of abutment pressure in the residual coal pillar changes from "unimodal distribution" to "bimodal distribution," the residual coal pillar gradually changes from elastic state to plastic state. When the width of the overlying residual coal pillar is less than the critical width, the thick hard roof and residual coal pillar structure (THRRCPS) lose stability suddenly, resulting in strong dynamic load on the surrounding rock of gob-side roadway. In order to prevent the rockburst of the gob-side roadway under the influence of THRRCPS, regional and local prevention measures are adopted to mitigate the accumulation of stress in the thick hard roof and gob-side roadway surrounding rock by hydraulic fracturing technology and large diameter pressure relief drilling hole.

Abstract:In multi-seam mining, as mining ranges expand and depths increase, the strong ground pressure exerted on the lower coal-seam working faces (WFs) or roadways by coal pillars (CPs) and the hard roof between the interburdens becomes increasingly severe, leading to periodic roof-fall accidents. This study focused on the 42108 WF of the 4–2 coal seam in the Buertai Coal Mine of Shandong mining. It combined field tests, theoretical research, and numerical calculations to investigate the superposition or amplification of ground pressure as WF traversed the CP with the hard roof between interburdens. The ground pressure behavior of WF entering and exiting the CP stage progressed from strong to weak: exiting the CP > under the CP > entering the CP, with the CP stage being prone to a strong ground pressure occurrence. We proposed the influence mechanism of strong ground pressure and a seesaw structural mechanics model under the mining conditions with parallel CPs and hard roofs. The relationship between the geometric structure movement and stress evolution of the seesaw space of the overlying hard roof was analyzed, revealing the mechanism behind stress increase, evident damage, and the likelihood of dynamic disasters within 5–10 m from the CP boundary of the WF. The stress concentration factor (SCF) of the advance abutment pressure in the coal wall was the primary controlling factor determining seesaw instability, effectively ensuring safe and efficient mining practices. This research holds significant theoretical importance and practical engineering value for controlling strong mine pressure under the overlying CPs and hard roofs.

Abstract:In order to prevent the mine strata pressure bumping occurred in the tail gateway of the fully mechanized top coal caving mining face,based on the deposition and mining technical conditions of the fully mechanized top coal caving mining face in No.11 seam in Xinzhouyao Mine,a pressure releasing blasting technology to weaken the hard roof of the tail gateway was studied and applied.The numerical simulation was applied to analyze and obtain the rational blasting parameters.The results showed that when the borehole horizontal projection distance reached 2/3 of the coal pillar width,the borehole could reach the stress concentrated area and the blasting pressure releasing role would be good.When the space distance between boreholes was 6 m,the blasting cracks would be connected and the blasting effect would be better than the space distance of 8 m.The roof weakening technology could make the stress in coal pillar reduced by 60% and could effectively prevent the mine strata pressure bumping occurred in the tail gateway of No.8935 fully mechanized top coal caving mining face.

Abstract:The untimely collapse of the lateral cantilever structure is one of the main factors in the deformation of the surrounding rock in hard-roof mines. In this study, a method for weakening the hard roof using dense drilling is proposed to promote roof collapse. Based on the geological engineering conditions in the Tashan coal mine, an FLAC 3D numerical model was developed by considering the plastic-softening characteristics of the hard roof to investigate the dynamic evolution process of the weakening roof surface. As the load increased, failure around drillings occurred gradually, and the failure zones expanded in an x-shape from the drillings toward each other, forming a weakened macro-surface. The influence of the drilling arrangement on weakening the hard roof was investigated using numerical models of various drilling diameters and spacings. The results indicated that a large diameter or small spacing was helpful for the formation of a weakened macro-surface. However, differences were observed in the response of key parameters to the weakening effect. The peak stress, fracture stress, and energy absorbed during loading and dissipated during the rock failure process displayed a downward trend for all models with an increasing drilling diameter. In contrast, these parameters, except for the fracture stress, tended to increase with a decreasing spacing. Field monitoring revealed that the average rock strength around dense drillings decreased from 69.0 to 60.5 MPa during the advancing of the work face after roof cutting by implementing dense drillings. Furthermore, the maximum axial tension increments of the cable and bolt reached 80 kN and 10 kN, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract During extra-thick coal seam mining, the high-level thick and hard strata are the main reason for the presence of a strong ground pressure in the working face; however, there is no active and effective control technology for high-level hard strata. This paper proposes the concept of ground fracturing hard roofs, and the physical simulation was used to study the control effect of ground fracturing on the strata breaking structure and energy release. The results showed that the ground fracturing changed the structural characteristics of the strata and reduced the energy release intensity and overburden movement spatial extent, which had a significant control effect on the ground pressure. The Datong mining area was selected as the engineering background, a ground horizontal well fracturing engineering test was conducted on site, and a 20-m-thick hard rock layer, which was 110 m vertically away from the coal seam, was determined as the fracturing target layer. On-site microseismic monitoring showed that the crack propagation length was up to 216 m, and the height was up to 50 m. On-site mine pressure monitoring showed that the roadway deformation was reduced to 100 mm, the periodic weighting characteristics of the hydraulic supports were not obvious, the ground pressure in the working face was significantly controlled, and the ground fracturing was successful. Ground fracturing changed the occurrence characteristics of the high-level hard strata, which is beneficial to ameliorate the stress environment of a working face and provide a new approach of hard rock control.
Study on Roof Instability Effect and Bearing Characteristics of Hydraulic Support in Longwall Top Coal Caving

Abstract:In longwall top coal caving (LTCC), due to the fracture and migration of top coal, the roof will break and collapse, which causes serious impact damage to hydraulic support. Therefore, we aimed to reveal the relationship between the roof instability effect and the bearing characteristics of hydraulic support in the LTCC face. Based on the occurrence conditions of the 08 mining area in the Shilawusu Coal Mine, the instability model of the upper immediate roof was established, and the working resistance of hydraulic support was derived. Secondly, the dynamic coupling model of roof-top coal-hydraulic support was established in LS-DYNA, and the crushing degree of top coal and the bearing characteristics of the hydraulic support in different roof instability fields were analyzed. The results show that the main factors affecting the working resistance of hydraulic support are the fracture position of the upper immediate roof, the acting force of the lower immediate roof, and the distribution of the gangue in the goaf. The rotary instability of the upper immediate roof at the coal wall brings serious impact effects, resulting in fractures in front of the coal wall and a large amount of crushed coal concentrated at the front end of the canopy. The crushing degree of top coal significantly impacts the canopy, especially the back end of the canopy and the hinged pin shaft, which is prone to bending fracture. The research results can provide references and experience for the stability control of roof strata and the structural optimization of hydraulic support.
