Investigation of antibiotics applied during perioperative period of colorectal surgery in 35 hospitals in Shanghai

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To evaluate the situation of perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis(PAP) in colorectal surgery.METHODS Hospitals administered by the Shanghai Nosocomial Infection Control Center(SNICC) were required to investigate the application of PAP in their hospitals in Apr and Oct 2010.The data of the surveillance was reported to SNICC through network.RESULTS The data of 35 hospitals involved the information of PAP in colorectal surgery.Overall,673 cases of surgery were enrolled in the study,including 482 colon surgeries and 191 rectal surgeries.Eleven categories and 43 kinds of antibiotics were applied,the most frequently used category was cephalosporin,accounting for 40.3% of all the utilization,followed by the nitromidazole(37.0%).The rates of single use,combination of two antibiotics,and combination of three antibiotics were 19.3%,69.2% and 11.5%,respectively.Cephalosporin plus nitromidazole was the most frequently used regimen of PAP in colorectal sugery(46.2%).The mean time of PAP was 5.8±2.9d(0-21 d).CONCLUSION Single antibiotic application,irrational drug combinations and long-term utilization of PAP still exist in the colorectal surgeries in Shanghai,and the high proportion of the combination of three antibiotics,which is worthy to pay attention to.
