Abstract:Well-aligned one-dimensional iron pyrite FeS2 nanotube arrays have been fabricated via layer-by-layer assembly technique on ZnO nanorod arrays in combination with subsequent sulfurization. The as prepared products were confirmed to be pure phase pyrite FeS2 with Fe/S ratio approaching 1/2. Typical nanotube structure was observed for the FeS2 with average outer diameter of 150 +/- 20 nm and wall thickness of 50 +/- 5 nm. Comparisons of photoelectrochemical properties between FeS2 nanotubes and FeS2 nanoparticles were conducted. Tafel polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicate that FeS2 nanotubes possess high corrosion resistance and electrochemical stability. The J-V curves show that the photocurrent at 1.0V for FeS2 nanotubes is more than five times larger than that of FeS2 nanoparticles, indicating enhanced photoresponse and rapid charge transfer performances of 1-D nanotube structure. The enhanced photoelectrochemical properties mainly benefit from the unique architecture features of nanotube array structure. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Copper sulfide (Cu2S) micro-tubes with the diameter of ∼1–5 μm and the length of tens of μms were successfully synthesized by a simple thermal evaporation of zinc sulfide powders on copper substrates at ∼700 °C for about 1 h. The atom ratio of element Cu and S (2:1at.%) of single micro-tube confirmed that the micro-tube was Cu2S. The samples were indicated to be composed of monoclinic Cu2S and hexagonal β-Cu2S by X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. From the facts of results, a growth mechanism of copper sulfide micro-tubes was discussed briefly.

A facile solution-based method has been designed to fabricate uniform Bi2S3 nanotubes with average size of 20 nm x 160 nm using only bismuth nitrate (Bi(NO3)(3)center dot 5H(2)O) and sulfur powder (S) as the reactants and octadecylamine (ODA) as the solvent. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) experiments were employed to characterize the resulting Bi2S3 nanotubes and the classic rolling mechanism was applied to explain their formation process.

Abstract:CuO nanofibers were fabricated by calcination of the electrospun PVP/Cu(NO3)2 composite nanofibers. For the first time, CuS, Cu7.2S4, and Cu2 – xSe nanofibers were successfully synthesized by double-crucible sulfurization and selenidation methods via inheriting the morphology of CuO nanofibers as precursors, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows CuS, Cu7.2S4, and Cu2 – xSe nanofibers are respectively pure hexagonal phase, cubic phase and orthorhombic phase with space group of P63/mmc, Fm-3m and Cmcm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicates that the diameter of CuS, Cu7.2S4, and Cu2 – xSe nanofibers are 149.60 ± 17.52, 103.40 ± 12.95, and 127.28 ± 19.55 nm under the 95% confidence level, respectively. More importantly, this preparation technique is of universal significance to prepare other metal chalcogenides nanofibers.
Fabrication of multimetal bisulfide nanotube and its structural characteristics

Abstract:The fabrication and structure controlling of inorganic fullerene-like nanocompounds have attracted wide interests in recent years. A new approach of exfoliating-restacking-structure controlling was applied to overcome some technological problems in present preparation approaches. MoS2 and WS2 powders were used as precursor materials and exfoliated into single layers by butyllithium. The sample was treated by MnCl2 solution at 80°C to introduce Mn2+ cations into the reactive system. In this way, the single layer was restacked and the structure of product could be controlled. The products were characterized by XRD, TEM and HRTEM respectively. XRD results indicate that multimetal disulfide compounds can be fabricated by this new approach. TEM results show that the morphology of the multimetal disulfide compounds exhibits hollow-like nanotubes. HRTEM results show that the structure of the hollow-like nanotubes is of double layers. And the substructure of the inner layer exhibits multi-wall shape. Based on the above results, a possible formation mechanism of hollow multi-wall nanotubes was discussed.

Abstract:Chain-like NiS tubes and echinus-like nickel sulfide (Ni3S2) nanostructures were synthesized successfully by a solution chemical route. The growth models of these two materials and the most possible mutation process between these two different morphologies are discussed. The temperature and field dependent magnetizations, M(T) and M(H), show that both the samples have a very weak ferromagnetism and exhibit a strong paramagnetic response in a high applied field.

Abstract:A solution route has been developed to synthesize covellite (CuS) nanostructures through the precitation reaction of CuCl2 · 2H2O, thiourea (Tu), and NaHCO3 in distilled water at room temperature. By regulating the concentration of Tu, CuS nanotubes and hollow nanospheres with diameters of 100–200 nm have been selectively prepared. Structural characterizations indicate that both nanotubes and hollow spheres are composed of CuS nanoparticles with diameters of about 5–10 nm. UV-Vis absorption and room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra display different morphology-related absorption phenomena for nanotubes and hollow nanospheres. A systematic investigation has been carried out to understand the factors influencing the CuS morphology. Two different routes are identified to explain the formation of the nanotubes and hollow nanospheres herein.

Abstract:A hydrothermal reaction route has been developed to prepare chalcopyrite phase CuFeS2 nanorods at 200–250°C. X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy results reveal that the CuFeS2 synthesized displays nanorods with diameters of 20–40 nm and lengths of up to several micrometers. Elemental analysis gives the atomic ratio of Cu:Fe:S of 1:1.04:2.11. The 57Fe Mössbauer spectrum exhibits a six-peak hyperfine magnetic spectrum and a like-splitted line non-magnetic peak. The factors influencing the formation of the CuFeS2 nanorods were discussed.

Abstract:We report the phase transformation of hematite (α-Fe2O3) single crystal nanowires to crystalline FeS nanotubes using sulfurization with H2S gas at relatively low temperatures. Characterization indicates that phase pure hexagonal FeS nanotubes were formed. Time-series sulfurization experiments suggest epitaxial growth of FeS as a shell layer on hematite. This is the first report of hollow, crystalline FeS nanotubes with NiAs structure and also on the Kirkendall effect in solid-gas reactions with nanowires involving sulfurization.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) filled with Cu nanoneedles at tips have been synthesized using alkali-element doped Cu catalyst by a simple thermal chemical vapor deposition method. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that Cu nanoneedles have perfect face-centered cubic structure. The carbon shells provide an effective barrier against oxidation and consequently ensure a long-term stability of the Cu core. Selected area electron diffraction indicates that these Cu nanoneedles are single crystalline with fine quality. Transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy were employed to analyze the microstructure of Cu filled CNTs. On the basis of experimental results, a simple growth model is proposed in this paper.

Abstract:Large-scale long continuous FeS2 nanowire filled carbon nanotubes ( CNTs) were one-step synthesized in the presence of NaN3 in supercritical CS2 at 500 degrees C using ferrocene as the iron source. The CNTs have outer diameters in the range of 15-25 nm and the core FeS2 nanowires inside CNTs are characterized as single crystals, with an average diameter of 8 nm and up to several micrometres in length. The band gap of FeS2 nanowire filled CNTs was determined as 5.69 eV from the ultraviolet and visible light absorption spectrum, showing its promise for application in reversible conversion between solar energy and electrical or chemical energy.

Abstract:Novel layer-rolled nanotubes of a nickel complex have been successfully synthesized by a simple wet chemical method. The nanotubes are assembled by rolling the (111) sheets of [Ni(NH3)6]Cl2 with the assistance of a polymer. The remarkable uniformity and high yields of the nickel complex nanotubes point to future applications in various fields of nanotechnology.

Abstract:A series of bamboo-like CNx nanotubes have been synthesized from pyridine precursor by chemical vapor deposition with bimetallic Fe-Co/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst in the range of 550 similar to 950 degrees C. An unusual predomination of pyridinic nitrogen over graphitic nitrogen has been observed for the CNx nanotubes with reaction temperature below 750 degrees C. The pyridinic nitrogen decreases and the graphitic nitrogen increases with rising reaction temperature. A synergism mechanism of C5N-six-membered-ring-based growth through surface diffusion and vapor-liquid-solid growth through bulk diffusion was accordingly deduced and schematically presented. This mechanism could not only explain our own experimental results, but also understand the CNx-nanotube-related experimental phenomena in the literature, as well as be in accordance with the basic principle of diffusion kinetics. A promising route to the challenging topic for synthesizing regularly arranged C5N or high-N-content CNx nanotubes has also been suggested.

Abstract:We report the first synthesis of high-quality binary and ternary Sb(2)Se(3-x)S(x) nanotubes across the entire compositional range from x = 0 to 3 via a simple, low-cost, colloidal synthetic method of injection of Sb(III)-complex solution into a hot paraffin liquid containing Se, S, or a mixture thereof. In contrast to the classic rolling mechanism, the modular formation of the reported nanotubes follows a four-stage self-seeding process: (i) amorphous nanospheres, (ii) short crystalline nanotubes growing out of relatively large amorphous nanospheres, (iii) long crystalline nanotubes attached to small amorphous nanospheres, and (iv) single-crystal nanotubes. The obtained single-crystal nanotubes have tunable composition, orthorhombic phase, well-defined rectangular cross sections, and growth direction along [001], as revealed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and selected area electron diffraction studies. UV-vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy reveals that the optical bandgap energy of the Sb(2)Se(3-x)S(x) (0 < or = x < or = 3) nanotubes increases quadratically with the sulfur concentration x with these bandgap energies falling in the range from 1.18 to 1.63 eV at the red edge of the solar spectrum. The present study opens a new avenue to low-cost, large-scale synthesis of high quality semiconductor nanotubes with technological applications in solar energy conversion and also for a wide range of optical nanodevices operating in the near-infrared.

Abstract:The synthesis of high-quality carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-Cu composite powder by chemical vapor deposition remains a persistent challenge due to catalyst deactivation resulting from its diffusion into Cu powder at elevated temperatures. To overcome this obstacle, a novel approach involving pre-coating Cu powder with an Al2O3 barrier layer was proposed to facilitate the in-situ growth of CNTs. Experimental results demonstrated that synthesized CNTs exhibited a desirable combination of uniform distribution, high aspect ratio and tunable structures achieved by utilizing different carbon source precursors. Notably, single/double-walled CNTs (S/DMCNTs) with exceptional structural integrity was achieved on Cu powder, which has not been reported previously. The Raman ID/IG ratio of present S/DMCNTs-Cu composite powder reached approximately 0.18, which was significantly superior compared to the relevant reported data.

Abstract:Single-crystalline Bi2S3 nanotubes have been prepared by pyrolyzing single-source precursor Bi(S2CNEt2)3 at 530∘C. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrum, energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) demonstrate that the nanotubes are composed of pure orthorhombic phase Bi2S3. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show that the Bi2S3 nanotubes have rectangular or polygonal open ends with cross-sectional width of 100–500 nm, and length up to several microns. The nanotubes grow radially from a center toward two or more different directions to form straw-bundle-like morphology. High-resolution (HR) TEM and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) demonstrate that the nanotubes are single-crystalline and grow along the [001] direction.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline CoS2 and NiS2 have been successfully prepared through a solventothermal synthetic route at 130°C. The final products are characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The sulfur-to-metal ratio of the as-prepared products is ca. 1.99–1 and 1.98–1 for CoS2 and NiS2, respectively. TEM shows that with the change of solvents, the morphologies of the as-prepared sulfides can be controlled.
